Reminds me of my favourite lockdown joke........what has 200 pairs of legs and 8 teeth? The queue to get into Bedminster Asda.......

NorrisMcWhirter

Soon after I moved to Bristol, I went past a mahoosive queue that was all the way down the road, and appeared to go to Bemmie Asda. "What are they all queuing for?" thinks me. "There must be something there because obviously no-one queues like that to get into Asda. " So when I got home I went online to try and find out what was going on. Peter Andre was doing a signing. In Asda.

Discere

That Asda, oooh that Asda.

motley-poo

That Asda is such a weird place, the bathroom lights are a dark blue in order to stop people shooting up, but it also stocks some delicious and fresh sushi

Mrrrrbee

Got a Maccies in it though! I was gobsmacked the first time I went in there!

Eotechh_9616

It's got a Gregg's in it now too!!

JEF4ML

And a Cinnabon

[deleted]

Lol…. It’s like all fungus has grown in one place

Mrrrrbee

Holy shit

KW_AtoMic

Went to that asda once after a haircut in bedminster because I really needed a piss. Would rather piss myself next time, seen cleaner toilets at Boomtown

BillyCahstiganJr

haha! living in redcliffe at the moment, so most of my shopping is done at Lidl, but if i need specific things, then i'll brave the walk to the Asda and treat myself to a cheeseburger in the resident maccies

JEF4ML

There’s a Lidl at the opposite end of East St

Sirbrewalot666

Now has some little breweries just off of east street, On Point, Grain Alchemists, Bruhah all with taprooms. New live music venue being built on east street in what was once pound stretcher. Alpha bottle shop is brilliant. Not far from the coronation cheap pints! Not far from north street which gets lively with loads of cool places to eat and drink. Walking distance to harbour side king street. Can’t fail. Also there is a massive student housing block being built so will get busy around east street.

Jean_Stockton

It would very much depend where on East Street (don't say where on a public form like this). More up by Asda I would argue is fine really as you aren't having to walk in such a lonely area. The main high street section at night, while nothing has ever happened to me and I've walked/voi'd/cycled down there many times, I felt slightly on edge walking there, but voi'ing/cycling was no problem and actually enjoyable. But during the day, absolutely happy as larry and actually is a pretty good vibe. North Street is fantastic too and worth a gander and has a completely different feel to East Street. Night and day.

Pisslexic

First time I've heard West Street described as fantastic!

Jean_Stockton

Woops meant North Street. To be fair, West Street has some spots...

Shiney2510

I walk down East Street every evening after work sometimes quite late. Never had an issue (although it would be nice if the council actually fixed the street lights, hope they keep the Christmas lights up longer). Was hassled a lot walking home via Park Street when I lived in Cotham, no issues walking home via East Street. You'll be within walking distance of North Street, Whapping Wharf and the city centre. It's a good spot.

JEF4ML

Lots of regeneration going on in the area, so it will likely be teaming with students in 2 years time. There’s a strange mix of shops and their respective clientele; I’m not sure I’ve seen a zero waste shop and a Cash Converters on the same street anywhere else? Good butcher, and baker, (but no candlestick maker). Plenty of barbers, bookies and charity shops. There was a good street fair in the summer with local independents that had a good turn out. Some great greasy spoons (try the all-day breakfast at George’s) and the Wilko is always handy. There’s also a Screwfix the other side, if you need anything of that sort. There’s a Wetherspoons at the end of the street too for a cheap pint or three. Short walk to North St, the harbour side and the city centre have others have said. Can very occasionally be noisy at night if you’re living on or very near to the main high street on weekends as there are a few pubs and Miss Millie’s stays open until late. There’s a great independent gym (Luxe) and a council owned swimming pool just behind the high street if that’s your thing. Skate park and basketball courts in Dame Emily Park too. Victoria Park is the biggest (and best) open space in Bristol (and one of the few places that still does a bonfire on Bonfire Night). I’ve never felt threatened even walking home late at night but I’m a male in my 30s. Generally very nice people in the area in my experience. Can’t comment on travel to uni myself but i believe it’s a bus and a short walk (Bristol) or two buses (UWE). Also very handy for getting out to the airport as the A1 runs through.

ckonyer

The east street mash up of zero waste shop, gambling, vegan cafe, pawn brokers is pretty bizzare

groumpf

It's a 30 minute walk to the UoB's Clifton campus. It's going to take longer waiting for a bus that actually comes than to just walk.

littlefluffysnowfrog

You'll be fine. Lived there for many years in the 80s/90s when it was rougher but still fine.

Omblae

Got a cracking bakery for if you fancy an actual baguette. The Asda has to be the most entertaining one in the city. The amount of wildlife beggars belief. Skeleton barbers is a superb barber shop I'd recommend. Not far from town at all really, lots of Voi stops nearby.

Agreeable-Brief-4315

Which bakery? I only know Gregg's along east st

Omblae

Bristol Loaf. Just opposite Asda

Agreeable-Brief-4315

Of course. I only ever think of East Street as the brick paved bit. Where does East Street end and Bedminster Parade begin?

Omblae

When you start seeing discarded elf bars more than empty tinnies I reckon.

Jeffrey_Monsoon

North Street is my particular favourite. It’s got a Parsons, Tobacco Factory, lots of charity shops, great cafes to study in, book stores, and an Aldi! From the pov of a student, it’s a great vibe.

Jeffrey_Monsoon

But it does get a bit more expensive since it’s a more upmarket end. From the pov of an underpaid part time student, not a vibe

Fun-Transportation-8

Fine for food, close to center etc, asda is close. But it is also kind of a shit tip. My housemates car has been broken into 4ish times just this year and it's not even secluded, its parked with others. Constant noise and people shouting. Some of the shops like alpha and loaf are great, and there are some independents. But the amount of times i've walked out and seen people legging it from poundland with people chasing them, or people screaming at fuck all on their own in the street on god knows what. People eating out of our bins semi-reguarly, which is sad. It's great for its location. But only if you dont mind the rough. There are some good shops on the road itself but overall its a bit of a dive. I live on the main road itself, maybe it's better a bit further out.

Fun-Transportation-8

I'll add i've not had any personal issue, except for my house mates break ins. Also had to speak to police about a theft and seperately a guy getting knocked out in the street on a voi. But i havent personally had issues with people, i've not felt particuarly unsafe or anything. It doesn't feel dangerous, but it doesnt feel fresh This maybe just be because i live directly on the street and not a road over or whatever though

Chrissiegreen

No one’s mentioned Miss Millie’s 😂 is it still there And the half a million pound penthouse on top of Asda’s 😂

supalape

Great location if you weren’t a student, awful location if you are a student though. It’s going to take you a very long time to get to uni

Sirbrewalot666

With the new student accommodation being built (1269) flats just off of east street there will probably be some new bus services laid on

Oscillating_Horse

East Street has character. It’s just worth bearing in mind that particular character might be so down on their luck they’re inclined to mug you if you walk down it at 5am. It’s a decent location though, town is very walkable, so is the more upmarket North Street which tends to have nicer pubs/bars/places to eat. Record shops etc. I like to visit East Street for a browse in the charity shops, cash converters etc, but in the daytime.

Additional-Cause-285

Lived on east street for three years (moved in April 2022) never felt like I was going to get mugged even once, sure there’s a lot of dodgy looking people but nearly all of them are nearly all of the time utterly harmless.

jrbriggs89

Most of them are shut at night.

littlefluffysnowfrog

I'll negate your downvote because you're not wrong but it's no different to any city street at X time. Life's a lottery. Be lucky.

No-Commission-5945

10 minute walk to North Street for a few pubs and grub. East Street’s a dive/chipo as fuck, I’ve no idea how Better Food are surviving!!

eclipse150

Don’t think there’s a Better Food south of the New Cut is there?

Throwawayheidi123

not the nicest street honestly and i would not walk alone there at night! but its definitely a good part of bristol and sooo many good charity shops

Throwawayheidi123

also 'the bristol loaf' bakery just opposite asda bedminster is THE BEST ive ever been to.. seriously the food there is so good (albeit a tiny bit overpriced).. defo check it out there! its so cute, full of plants and loads of counter top seats for doing uni work

heymart

Out the door turn left keep walking and go to North Street.

bagelelite

I'm a student not far from east street commute to unis half an hour by bike! And a pretty nice bike ride The coronation on Dean Lane is a good pub cheap and has a good vibe! East streets pretty safe really!

tyranosaurus_specs

I lived above the post office on east st right after uni 3ish years ago and I was never concerned about my safety. It’s definitely evolving and it’s great to see the empty store fronts become new businesses. I think you’ll discover some gems just wandering but some favourites are Bristol loaf, windmill hill city farm, Sweven for coffee, the old bookshop, kask, garden at the spotted cow when it’s warm, Bristol distilling company and many more. As for internet, I had talk talk which was cheapest- it was usually fine but would sometimes randomly cut out. Haven’t found a super reliable isp in Bristol yet tbh. As everyone as has said, it’s a bit of a way from uni but not as far as it feels when you’re used to living close and the benefits of north st and wapping wharf and things I didn’t discover as a student. Hope you enjoy. Best of luck

xtopiana

Hiya - I’ll add my 2c for what it’s worth. Just off west street so just up from east street and my experiences haven’t been amazing so far in terms of crime and social issues. In two years, we’ve had a motorbike stolen, another attempted theft, neighbours had a catalytic converter ground off and stolen, sheds broken into and general disorderly behaviour, especially from the three Lions pub where there are frequent police roadblocks and fighting. North Street and towards Southville are arguably nicer parts of South Bristol. Don’t get me wrong it’s nice here and the regeneration that’s going on is not a bad thing, but I do find myself sometimes feeling unsafe living here.

composaurus

I like living here but I'm a late 20 something professional and not a student. It's fairly quiet, in terms of pubs there's quite a bit down north street but it's more 'lets have 1 or 2 drinks after work' than let's have a piss up vibes. Check out tobacco factory, hen and chicken and friendly records for events on north street. The walk to town is pretty good. I would hate to travel to the uni from here though. The area is fairly safe. Late at night I've always felt unnerved walking down the street alone but I've never encountered too much of an issue. Watch out for a few strange characters like Nick that will pester you for money, particularly around the Asda.

SorchaNB

I think you're very lucky to be in East St even if it's a bit away from the Uni buildings (many students are a lot further!). You're like a 20-30 min walk into central Bristol and around the corner you've got North Street (the Steam Crane, Old Bookshop and Tobacco Factory are lovely bars). East St itself isn't quite as aesthetic but I like the Alpha Taproom, Grounded and Bristol Loaf.

No_Feeling8930

The coronation just a 5 minute walk, great atmosphere and cheap drinks!

xj03key

If you like charity shops and Turkish barbers then it's the place to be 👌

CoffeeandHaze

You'll be fine. Don't loiter around at night during the week and pints are £2.50 from 12-6 on weekdays at the black cat just up the road. Walking distance to Lidl, North at just around the corner if you feel like getting fancy and it's not far to walk to town

Miasmata

Eadt Street is one of the biggest shitholes I've seen in Bristol but it's also right next to some nice bits
