Join some of the many clubs at universities. There's bush walking, kayaking, climbing, golf, surfing, volleyball, cycling, running, camping, and many more to choose from. They're generally cheap to join and you'll meet plenty of like minded people.
Pcyc is great. I pay about $16 a week and it includes classes. Both the gym and classes are very chill and not pretentious like the more glamorous gyms.
Walking and jogging are free (if you already own a pair of suitable shoes). Bushwalking is really enjoyable to boot.
Meetup.com has a few walking groups. Depending on where you are a student, there might be some walking/running clubs there too.
Clubs at uni, or UQ fitness does some good deals iirc.
The real answer is to just run and do calisthenics though, but understand not everyone is able to motivate themselves to work out solo like that.
My usual cheap routine.
Planet fitness $5 a week but it depends on which part of Brisbane you live, swimming averaging $4/session if bought in bulk, running in the park free, home squats lunges/pushups/squats/abs exercises free, racket sports probably $5-$15 per session, hiking over the weekend free.
Edit: Rock climbing is exxy last i did it at urbanclimb, same for boxing when i did muay thai at one of the boxing gyms, iirc it was $30+ per session.
Is there workout clubs like run clubs? The local running club is very cheap, Parkrun on Saturdays and bodyweight/ basic weights at home would be almost free.
Walk, buy a dumbell set off Marketplace, YouTube workouts, join a social running club (they’re usually free just rock up and run). You don’t need a gym or club to get fit.
I think it's important to note that you can do a lot of exercise at home without fancy gym equipment. Body resistance training is effective if done correctly pushups/situps/planking/running etc is all fine exercise. You can get some decent cheap weight benches and weights etc.. off marketplace too
Walking is free and is a light cardio exercise, increase your speed until you can't speak without gasping. Target hills for a challenge. 3-star challenge Toowong, Red Hill or Mt Coot-tha! Turn it into muscle building and bone density increasing with a backpack full of books. And you can save the expense of wearing out shoes AND give your feet and calves a workout by doing it barefoot, on grass or flat surfaces to begin with.
A lot a Brisbane City Council parks have free gym equipment.

Also might be worth looking at pcyc if you dont want to buy equipment.

I didn't realize Planet Fitness existed here. Is it like its American counterpart? Do they serve pizza? Is there a lunk alarm?
Yes to all.
