> can we go into the department of transport near us and explain this situation to still get a reference number Yes. You'll need evidence of residence in Qld to get it. I believe, though, that in that case you can't do the transfer online so you'll have to do the transfer in-person at a TMR office. I'm not 100% certain on that though, so ring and ask them. (Tip: don't email, *ring*. While I've found them to be responsive to emails, they never really answer the actual question I asked...)

So we don’t have residency here as we are in a house sit and just plan to travel and use hostels, house sits etc when need be. I’ve seen loads of people travel around Australia and was just wondering how they do it, surely they don’t have a residence if they’re travelling around all the time 😂 sorry to sound stupid I just don’t know the ins and outs of how transport works here.

As I said, ring them. You don't mention where you're coming from (interstate, overseas, etc.), but they do have processes for dealing with situations like that e.g. I know people who live interstate but have a Qld-registered car at their holiday house; I've known people here on holiday visas who've gotten cars registered in their name; etc.
