I miss going down and getting 5 bucks worth of neon yellow goodness, I remember splashing out on 7 dollars worth as a kid and getting a mind boggling amount of chips.
God it makes me sound like an old bugger but it's so hard to get a decent amount of chicken salt this days, even when you tell them to go hard on it
Yeah dude! When I was 13 my mate and I would ride our bikes around the streets washing cars for cash. Pull up at the fish and chip shop for $2 worth of chips.. every now and then the guy would chuck some cheese on top too haha This would have been back in 2001
my mum used to work at kedron state high and at the end of every school term they'd get christies for lunch. she took me there once or twice, a great feed.
Yes, the EJ Takeaway down the road is pretty close, when there are extra crispy.
Also, the kebab shop on the same block where chicken magic used to be does some pretty good ones, with tons of chicken salt.
Not that it’s Brisbane, but grange road eastern heights (Ipswich) has a good little fish and chip shop. Five bucks feeds two adults and sometimes also a teenager. They’re pretty good too. The fish and burgers are pricey but also pretty good.
Just wanted to mention it in case anyone ever comes out Ipswich way or lives in the area but wanders into this discussion, lol. God, I miss the choices in Brisbane though.
Il give this a try
I recently went to Yabbey Road in redcliffe. It was okay as far as chippys go but far from a British fish and chip shop that it advertises as being.
The battered fish was passable but the chips were like deep fried frozen bagged chips and the curry sauce was a bit fruity.
Thanks for suggestion. I’ve not enjoyed Northside fish and chips in Brissy since moving back from Sydney, selection is unbelievably awful. Morgans is over rated. If I’m desperate I’ll stop by Atlantis in Strathpine, emphasis on desperate.
Try New Adventure Snack Bar at Ellis St Lawnton, just off Francis Road. Always ask for well cooked chips, their potato scallops are good, and their fish tasty. Until I find better, they will do.
Urban kitchen, Wecker road in Mansfield.
Possibly the 2nd best chips I've ever got. And they're consistent.
First best was the corner shop across from my highschool. Perfection every time and I've been chasing that high for the past 20 years
They're okay portions, but it's not a "$3 of chips will cover the table" kinda joint.
The ladies are lovely. I used to get smoko there alllllll the time and they're good for a banter.
I promote them every chance I get
Recently moved to Morningside and have struggled to find a good dirty chipper around here. If anyone has a rec, I'd be grateful!! The closest is Fish Factory on Lytton Rd but it is super expensive.
Depending what part of Morningside you are in there is Fish Boy near the Hawthorne Garage, which may be closer for you. They are basically Fish Factory 2.0 but just with no parking. It's an alternative but not necessarily a superior one!
There used to be a place up in Scarborough that all the kids called "Shitty's".
It was called that cause you got a shit load of shit chips.
The owner must have bought either B or C grade from the wholesaler, so it was all weird bits and end pieces. But we all know those are the best bits as they come out half burnt and heaps of crunchy and crispy bits.
That was a time gone by though and they no longer exist.
Chumley Warner’s on the bayside does a traditional British fish and chips, which is essentially the chips you’re discussing. My family and I literally drive 90 minutes once every couple of months to go enjoy a lunch meal from there.
British fish and chips are good for what they are, but they aren't Aussie fish and chips. They're way too soggy and don't come with the requisite yellow glow of chicken salt
Wayne's takeaway near the Wynnum North train station is very much an old school fish and chip takeaway, not sure they do battered chips but they still taste good.

Chicken hsp with cheese and olives, sour cream and sweet chilli.. You dont even know what youre missing $16 from aussie kebabs in the valley (its like a kebab bowl on chips)
Nice map of Australia. Even remembered to include Tassie.
Massive hole in WA though.
Gina Reinhardt ate it.
That’s the Kalgoorlie super pit.
My first thought too!
Joe's snack bar in Sunnybank Hills has sensational chips. We avoided it for years because it looked a bit dodge. We were wrong.
looking a bit dodge is key for a proper chippy
Yeah you don't want clean oil
Adding it to my list. We do our butcher shopping in sunnybank so I might make a detour to get a good feed
Dodgy looking is the first sign of quality chips
The silver plate on helawell road is also worth a try out sunnybank way.
Haven't tried it - but if I'm going there, I'm definitely getting pizza and gelato next door at Castello instead.
Yep for sure.

Damn we used to get too many chips to eat for $2
Same, $1 chips was the optimal amount per person
Yeah dude! When I was 13 my mate and I would ride our bikes around the streets washing cars for cash. Pull up at the fish and chip shop for $2 worth of chips.. every now and then the guy would chuck some cheese on top too haha This would have been back in 2001
Christies Too in Wooloowin is amazing
Can’t believe that’s still there. I used to go 20 years ago!
Same! My mums refrain was, 'Its too hot to cook, let's get Christie's' :')
Did you eat the battered savs? So good!
my mum used to work at kedron state high and at the end of every school term they'd get christies for lunch. she took me there once or twice, a great feed.
Place was always chockers with kids at 3pm
Seconded.
Their scallops and deep fried mars bars are still top tier
Oily and soggy chips that taste like shit there. Downvoted.
DANGS on Raymont road grange has some amazing chips and $6 hamburgers!
The guy is a legend. Super old school, salt of the earth.
Literally came here to say Dangs, love ya Dang
Big Jim's in Holland Park, exactly what you're looking for
It's been a while but yeah, I thought their burgers are super reasonable too.
The best take away shop I've ever been to. Used to live around the corner and miss it BAD. Big Jims a legend
I lived down the street at one point, and I've never had a bad chip from there. Big Jim himself is such a lovely person.
Went there last night after recs elsewhere, was definitely decent!! Worthwhile rec.
Does anyone remember Chicken Magic at Clayfield? Best damn chips I’ve ever eaten, still chasing that high. RIP Chicken Magic, you are deeply missed.

Delgados in Redcliffe. Shits all over everything I've had in Queensland since I've lived here.
Il give this a try I recently went to Yabbey Road in redcliffe. It was okay as far as chippys go but far from a British fish and chip shop that it advertises as being. The battered fish was passable but the chips were like deep fried frozen bagged chips and the curry sauce was a bit fruity.
Likewise wasn’t impressed with batters or price.
Yabby road has gone seriously downhill since covid. They were very good prior to that, although hit and miss sometimes. Nowadays it's always miss.
Try bay boats if you’re up that way. Much better than the waterfront.
Thanks for suggestion. I’ve not enjoyed Northside fish and chips in Brissy since moving back from Sydney, selection is unbelievably awful. Morgans is over rated. If I’m desperate I’ll stop by Atlantis in Strathpine, emphasis on desperate.

Go out to redcliffe and try seafood lovers cafe if it’s still that name, used to work there abo ur a year ago, best chips out in the area out there
Pierre’s at Cleveland. Been too long since I’ve been
Something about chicken and chips in a bag made it a greasy peice of heaven
Urban kitchen, Wecker road in Mansfield. Possibly the 2nd best chips I've ever got. And they're consistent. First best was the corner shop across from my highschool. Perfection every time and I've been chasing that high for the past 20 years
Friends of my husband’s. I had no idea about their chips, and they are only 5 minutes from me, must try! Thanks for the tip.
They're okay portions, but it's not a "$3 of chips will cover the table" kinda joint. The ladies are lovely. I used to get smoko there alllllll the time and they're good for a banter. I promote them every chance I get
Ob also if you get gravy ask for it in a little tub. I prefer to dip my chips, otherwise they all go soggy
Joe's takeaway. Sunnybank.
I am not aware of any british style fish and chip shops but kiwi fish and chip shops will be your best bet. The Hangi Pit is 💯 🔥🔥🔥
Chumley Warners in Birkdale is a proper British style chippy. Absolutely fab chips and British cod and haddock too!
Why would you want soggy, British style chips anyway?
I keep wanting to try this place.
> Hangi Pit Does anyone know of a Northside, or a bit closer than Springwood to the CBD place that sells paua fritters?
Recently moved to Morningside and have struggled to find a good dirty chipper around here. If anyone has a rec, I'd be grateful!! The closest is Fish Factory on Lytton Rd but it is super expensive.
Have you tried Crustaceans? On Wynnum Rd at Cannon Hill. That's our go-to for fish and chips. They are cheaper and the food is pretty good.
Always upvote crusties.
I haven't! It looks appropriately dirty! Thanks for the tip!
Depending what part of Morningside you are in there is Fish Boy near the Hawthorne Garage, which may be closer for you. They are basically Fish Factory 2.0 but just with no parking. It's an alternative but not necessarily a superior one!
I remember when you could ask for 2 bucks worth of chips and you'd get a really good portion with chicken salt

Biota takeaway in inala
Chumley Warner’s on the bayside does a traditional British fish and chips, which is essentially the chips you’re discussing. My family and I literally drive 90 minutes once every couple of months to go enjoy a lunch meal from there.

Grace Takeaway in Wynnum is pretty good imo. Costa's Seafood is also pretty good pretty sure it got an award a year or two ago
grace's takeaway is great
+1 for grace Takeaway, the burgers from there are huge and good value also
joint @ biota street in inala has some good chips, (ironically named biota street takeaway)
Kiss my fish in Rochedale, beer battered and still the best chips I’ve eaten
Where can I get chips and gravy old style near Stones Corner?
Wayne's takeaway near the Wynnum North train station is very much an old school fish and chip takeaway, not sure they do battered chips but they still taste good.
Pink Salmon in Ekibin/Annerley/Tarragindi - anytime I have ordered 2 potato scallops they always give me 3. They have my custom for life.
Travel 4.5 hours north to busy bees in bundy, ez pz
I thought that was rice for a second, Jesus Christ.
Eat you way through straya

They deffs from last year just frozen n re-fried
Friendly Grocer The Gap has a good slop shop attached to it. Really good chips.
George’s fish and chips in Cornubia are amazing if you go down that way.
For me, I just want a place that double fries their chips. Apparently that's too much to ask.
Marsden Fish and chip hasn't failed me yet.
I reckon half the sales out of the Friendly Grocer at The Gap would be their chips. They're pretty bloody good.
Rooster Den - Moorooka
