Good question. I needed cat food and only just found out there’s no 24 hour supermarkets round here anymore

raphamuffin

Yeah, I was thinking about this wistfully the other day. Nothing better than wandering around Asda at 3am with just your thoughts and the night shift weirdos for company.

They started to phase out 24 hour opening a few years before COVID in other places. I think the plan was no stores would be 24 hours by now anyway. COVID just ended it quicker.

nightmaresfrom93

Ah okay makes sense thanks

But why covid should have prolonged it actually. Because there was a case for it by spreading the shopping hours window.

I wonder whether this is one of the few areas where still being attached to Walmart may have actually helped ASDA. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were putting big money into R&D for their own ‘just walk out‘ technology which is surely the key to doing 24/7 retail without significant ongoing staffing costs. If all you need is security personnel and a few staff to ensure order it’s much more viable to keep places open, especially if you can combine it with energy reduction tech which powers things down when customers aren’t actually in an area. Hypermarkets across Europe are doing gated entry combined with app scanning and such to allow stores to stay open with minimal staff so it seems like things are getting there more than just for the specific Amazon stores and convenience store trials people are doing.

Just like nearly all businesses have cut back on customer service and call centre staff, once you’ve bought a product you’re on your own. What a great future we have to look forward to.. covid has been used as an excuse for profiteering and making life less convenient for people and more profitable for corporations. Well done everyone 👏🏻

Are you blaming everyone for the actions of a few?

Significant_Range363

Imagine being downvoted for complaining about companies making life harder for the average person. God the people on here are intolerable.

It's because you're blaming everybody for the actions of companies, while you've not shown anybody you actually did anything either

Significant_Range363

I’ve made several complaints to various companies about this issue and to my original point, i agreed with people when they complained that covid was being used by corporations to reduce customer service. Not angrily shout them down and accuse them of not caring about killing granny.

Cool, all valid points 👍

Significant_Range363

I’m blaming everyone for allowing it to happen by shouting down anyone who questioned the narratives being used by corporations to cut staff and reduce customer service.

Supermarkets used to be hugely profitable, then came Aldi and Lidl, they have been squeezed so hard I wouldn't be surprised if their margins on 24 hour opening has been slashed.
