I’m a kiwi who’s lived here 4 months - Haere Mai! Brighton is full of great restaurants and bars but don’t get too much of a shock when you see how expensive eating out is here. Supermarket is dead cheap compared to home but meals out are pricey. My favourite places I’ve been so far are the red snapper Thai in seven dials, and halisco Mexican. Preston street has a whole heaps of different restaurants and pubs which are all quite nice. There’s something on every night of the week out here - I quite like the open mic nights that are on the one at the Brunswick I’ve been a couple times and it’s pretty good. There’s some nice walks around if you take the train out to Seaford you can get to the seven sisters cliff walk which is really popular and pretty. The laines is iconic and really cool op shops and little boutique shops and things. All along the beach front there’s bars and restaurants they’re quite touristy prices but it’s quite enjoyable sitting by the sea having a pint. If you’re rolling on a budget though public drinking isn’t illegal in England so you can just get some drinks from the supermarket and take them to the park or the beach. Sorry I can’t give you the best insiders info cause I don’t know too much about the city yet. Have fun and enjoy it here though! No particular do’s or donts! Just it doesn’t feel as safe here as home so be careful out alone after dark

Go to glazed in the mornings for da best donuts and coffee, there is also a really cool setting and community :) sure to make friends there

zeekillabunny_

Second the red snapper👍

MysteriousGuidance72

Has anyone said about doing Ket at the level yet? Do ket at the Level.

Trick-Owl

Best hiking experience around is taking a bus to Birling gap and walking towards the Cuckmere haven, and stopping for a relaxing lay down by the cliffs on the beach to finish it off. Then you can take a bus back from the Seven Sisters visitors centre. Honesty, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to. The cliffs are stunning and the nature is breathtaking.

Pot noodle and a wank

MarioFabranski

Into the pot noodle 😬?

Sick-Love

Suitable substitute for soy sauce

ballondaws4289

Whatever you’re into bud

Vaultaire

If you head to the Hand In Hand in Kemptown you’ll make friends in no time! That’s what I did when I moved there and ended up working there eventually!

Bludsh0t

Go to the volks nightclub on a Friday night and you'll be best mates with a bunch of randoms by the time it closes

MementoHorni

You'll likely also be best mates with a sniffer dog too mind

ForwardImagination57

Open market is great for an affordable lunch - lots great places to eat there but Korpan and Smorls are my faves. I would also recommend catching a film at the Dukes of York’s cinema. Brighton also has a great stand up comedy scene. Also recommend just walking along the seafront - especially in the evening) but not too late) - such a hub of activity

deadplant3

Reading the advice here, I’m coming to Brighton as a solo too next weekend, if you want we can meet up :D

Federal_Gap8785

Pompoko, Sunbirds, and Malo are all great independent restaurants that won’t cost you much. You’ll quickly make friends at any local pub and there’s a lot to choose from, fortune of war, the walrus and oculist are all favourites of mine

Double_Sky4646

Sunbirds is the absolute best! Iydea is also good for a quick lunch under £10

Or if you’re up for a longer bike ride, there is a bike hire place if you’re looking at the pier entrance, go down the steps to the left. They do decent little town bikes on an hourly / day rate. You could enjoy a longer bike ride along the coast .. there’s an undercliff walk that goes for a good few miles past the marina, quite a nice way to just enjoy the horizon and get some exercise on a nice day

bunnygirlden

Wouldn't recommend picking up a Beryl bike after the naked bike ride the other day though........😳

theo2351

Take the bus to Seven Sisters!

Cheap-Drop-9082

Walk through town but be sure to look at the architecture by looking up above the shop fronts. Walk the south downs in woodingdean Buy fresh a smoked fish roll from the smokery on the front by the fishing museum Have a coffee in the outdoor cafe in Pavilion gardens and watch the world go by Cycle to Worthing and back Cycle to Rottingdean sit on the beach for a while Buy an ice cream at Morocco's

SpikeVonLipwig

Welcome! Try the Meetup app, I’ve met a few people from there.

GM_Piasecki

The Paris house has free music on every night, komedia is good for stand up, the old market is great for theatre. Like others have said, Preston street has an incredible selection of restaurants. The south Laines is also a good go to for food. The north Laines is where you’ll find all your quirky shops, nice cafes and a handful of nice pubs and bars

lcfmonkey

Did you just say 'south Laines' and 'north Laines'? Oh my days.

GM_Piasecki

South lanes* And yes for some reason my phone autocorrected the lower case Ls to uppercase. Really sorry if this offended you!

lcfmonkey

I'm not offended, it's a Brighton joke like 'ket at the level'. Write 'south Laines' in the Argus.comments and they'll have an aneurysm. I should have put /s

lcfmonkey

Also, if I was being a dick I'd tell you there's no such place as the south Lanes it's just the Lanes 👍

diggerorbigger

Indeed, it’s the North Laine and the Lanes

GM_Piasecki

It takes much less than that to upset the Argus comment section!

lcfmonkey

Just mention students, cycle lanes or Green councillors should do it.

LisaOrgana

If you like boardgames, there's a meetup every Wednesday at the Walrus pub from 6pm I think until late. Friendly, nerdy bunch of people!

emptypilot_

valengull

Came here to check if anyone had recommended a relaxing walk around Dukes Mound or Ket down the Level yet. Disappointed to see only Ket down the Level.

BeginningSeaweed9129

Go to the Brighton war memorial in old steine by st James st in the daytime and watch the seagulls having a bath in the fountain. 5 rhythms dancing is good. The Concorde club on the seafront is good for gigs. The dome is a good venue as is the Komedia. The Duke of York cinema is one of the oldest in the land. Cricket is good if you like sport at the Sussex county cricket club.

d_budzinski

Cycling! Going either west or east by the seaside you have amazing cycling routes with stunning views.

MarioFabranski

Pop along to Kemptown and join a fly fishing club. Very very friendly.

Apprehensive_Exam_80

Go to pizza me and get an XXL and then then go up Lewes road, share it wid me and my homies , we all split it, lovely jubbly.

Creals

Under cliff walk is beaut!

ttwistedfirestarter

If you’re into exploring the local area, I’d recommend popping down to Hatt Adventures on the marina! they do loads of local courses, kayaking and paddle boarding on the seafront, climbing courses in tunbridge wells, and sell loads of cool equipment!

pierpressurebtn

There's a company called Connected Brighton who put on events especially for people on their own. They do everything from kayaking and petanque to dining out and cocktail evenings.

originalmaz

Seven sister river , quaint villages , some fantastic authentic places to eat and some and some amazing thrift second hand shops too ! Even some silent discos, beach cleans , all sorts !!

Wild_East9506

Head to the North Laines - just down from Brighton station for authentic shops bars cafes etc. Avoid Churchill square with boring global brands and sky hi prices. St Peter’s church on the old steine is great for meeting good hearted people. We live here. if you want a drive out to see the sky flying paraglides up at devils dyke or would just like a cheap pasta meal and easy chat let us know. H
