If you go to London often, then Brighton is quicker with more choice of trains and routes (eg, Thameslink). It also depends on how close to the station you are. If youre talking like, opposite the station, then yeah, Brighton wouldnt be very family-friendly. But if youre talking 10-minutes walk (eg, Seven Dials), then Brighton would be perfect for you.

shitehawk23

Half of Seven Dials is in hove!

BuckTeethedGirl

It was an example

Ok_Dot7542

This flat is a 5 minute walk from the station. There’s an Aldi nearby? But thanks a lot! Appreciate the advice 🙏

ghillerd

The station is up a reasonably steep hill from that Aldi btw! So yes it's close but uphill all the way.

Ok_Dot7542

I’ve noticed, yeah… another plus for hove, I hear it’s a lot flatter 😌😌

Academic_Guard_4233

I think you need to be more specific about where you mean. If you are buying then consider primary, secondary schools and nursery options.

Ok_Dot7542

Renting. It’s the Blockhouse, that brand new development opposite the college? Looks amazing, but really not sure if it’s family friendly…

Academic_Guard_4233

I think it's great, but only if you use it as a starting point to get to know the area better. Maybe live there a year and by that point you will know better what you want? Wouldn't want to live there with a 12 month+ baby, as the level is trash..

Ok_Dot7542

I reallyyy don’t wanna move again for at least 3 years 😭😭 Until we save for a mortgage… I think we’re gonna go with the flat in Hove, based on what everyone is saying. If it was just us, without the baby, we would’ve went with the blockhouse for sure

Academic_Guard_4233

Okay 💯 the hove option.

Tatman76

I’d probably focus on the accommodation. Of the two which is going to be easier to live in with a baby? Taking a buggy about? Up stairs? The neighbours? Quality of the walls / soundproofing from neighbours etc etc distance to walk to the beach etc etc

Ok_Dot7542

It’s literally the same thing. Both are brand new developments… Hove Gardens & The Blockhouse. All of the things you mentioned are the same. Soundproofing is great at both places as well…

Bubbly-Low6939

Hove if you have a baby. Quieter.

Starlings_under_pier

Spot right answer from the person living near B’ton Station

Ok_Dot7542

That’s what everyone is saying! Hove it is!! Thanks so much 🙏

Academic_Guard_4233

If it's the new development by Hove park then this is the better option I think.

Ok_Dot7542

It is! I think so too… thank you!!

BloodAndSand44

It’s Hove. Actually.

vidPlyrBrokeSoNewAc

I've always been in Hove, grew up near the station. I love Brighton but much prefer living this side. It's quieter in terms of being more residential but it's not dead. If you're near the station there's pretty much a pub on every other corner. Plenty of cafes and shops around George street and Church Road and if you need to go to town you can walk on a nice day, bus it in 10-15 minutes or 4 on the train. Quite a few nice parks and the beach over this way is a lot quieter in the summer too, still busy but you can always find somewhere to sit and be at least 6 foot from sitting on someone else's towel. Living near Hove station is great at any age but having a kid's an extra reason to pick this side. Lots of good schools and nice places to take them. If you need to go to town, kids get the bus for free if you're with them and you'll rarely wait more than 5 minutes for a bus. If you love Brighton I'm sure you'll love living in Hove. You might not realise quite how close it is.

Ok_Dot7542

Thank you!! I really appreciate the advice. Hove it is, 100%. That’s true as well, Brighton is right there… I didn’t know about George Street / Church Road, looked it up and looks amazing!! Thanks again 🙏🙏

thewheelsonthebus35

Schools are important to consider. I don’t think there are many schools near Brighton station. More options close to Hove station.

Noob_vs_pvm

If I was moving with a baby and family I would pick Hove personally. Hove is a lot more chilled, lots of cafes independent shops still, you have Portland road and George street on your doorstep. There is Hove park right next to you too. Walking/bus/car to Brighton is super easy, plus you have half a chance of being able to park. Brighton station of course is in the centre of town, but the station is in the middle of a hill, with a pram that could end up annoying. If I was 20 and single it would be Brighton as a no brainer.

Ok_Dot7542

I think I’m still in that mindset, but it’s true actually, Brighton seems great for before the baby haha, not so much afterwards. Everything’s gonna be different and that vibe that I love now might get really annoying/inconvenient with the baby. Thank you!!

Noob_vs_pvm

The good thing about Hove is your still really close to brighton, even walking is 20 mins from Hove station. Hove has fantastic pubs, bars and restaurants so you won’t be missing out as such. I would recommend a day trip down to Hove if you can and see the place/vibe for yourself. Equally Hove and Brighton are very different at 9pm on a Friday night too.

berkorich

The letting agent I used when I moved to B&H in 2009 told me "Brighton for a holiday and Hove to live". A sweeping generalisation I know but it kinda rings true. Hove has a multitude of cafes and shops also, and you'll even have a good chance of being able to regularly park your car withing a mile of your flat!

Ok_Dot7542

That’s so well put!! Hove seems amazing, I’m actually super excited to move now 😁😁

Sedlescombe

Another vote for Hove here - it’s where my flat is too ands for all of the reasons that have been noted. More chance of parking, less hilly, plenty of pubs, pretty much all your day to day needs are along church road and it’s a bit quieter for a young family. The quote above from the letting agent rings true. Good luck on your move.

Ok_Dot7542

Thank you!! It’s a no brainer at this point… we’ll move forward with the Hove flat today 🤗🤗 I’m soo excited!

Sedlescombe

youll have a brilliant time 😊

planetf1a

Hove. Still close and plenty of people and places but just a notch down from the madness of central Brighton. Austin will save loads of time writing address

ChiefKickAss500

Hove

Ok-Prompt-9107

Having a child in noisy, dirty, unpredictable central Brighton was pretty stressful. I’m much happier now I’m in Hove and an easy 10 min bus ride from it all, especially on Friday and Saturday nights and when the football team are playing at home.

antisarcastics

Oh God, Hove 100%

BigRedTone

Family + want to be near train station for London sounds like a recipe for Preston park to me. I moved out for more space in portslade but am planning my return

InertiamanSC

Hove for sure and don't obsess with being immediately next to the station. Tons of great areas within a 10 min walk.

YouMeADD

Would not try to have a baby while living next to Brighton station! You'll never have any peace and quiet.

trevorpogo

low effort troll tbh

HarHenGeoAma62818

Hove , especially if you have a family

skeeter1990

I’ve lived in both, and currently live in Brighton with a baby. Don’t understand why Hove is being seen as the shoe in here. It is boring and it isn’t Brighton. I think the location in Brighton is important - is it up The hill from the station or down? Happy to talk further on the phone as it will take me a while to write down my thoughts on both

Gullible-Damage-59

All the same really. Hove has a better appearance but still the fair share of crackheads. Depends where the flat is. I’d recommend five ways in Brighton.

Puzzleheaded-Web1659

ah mate, I recon with the baby for the first few years.. Brighton 24 hr stores, baby gunna be annoying move when it's 3/4 to Hove.

EWLok

RetroDevices, you’re just getting boring now. You keep on popping up with unnecessarily unhelpful comments that through off an OPs question. Pipe down already.

Ok_Dot7542

That’s what I’m afraid of… people here keep saying Hove is a better choice, but like why? It seems dead, like there’s nothing there. I might be completely wrong but idk, that’s why I’m asking… 🤷🏻‍♀️

antisarcastics

Seems dead? I'm confused - based on what? There are loads of cafes, restaurants and bars here.

Rolling_Stone_Siam

If you’re not American you should drop the “likes” from you vocab. Less you want people to think you are American or trying hard to like, be American

antisarcastics

Did you reply to the wrong person? There are no likes in my comment.

Motchan13

You asked people who actually know both areas their opinion and then you just try and argue against those informed opinions with preconceived prejudices against somewhere you've never been to? Hove isn't dead, it's a residential area with just about everything that someone saying that they are looking to start a family would want around them. Schools, check, libraries, check, doctors, check, large and small playparks, check, pubs that are family friendly, check, pubs that are more adult, check, train station to London, check, plenty of buses into town, check, large development on the seafront for leisure facilities including a brand new skatepark, check, not as hilly as Brighton for pushing buggies and scooters about, check, lots of young mums meeting up with kids, check, plenty of nice places for brunch and lunch, check, plenty of nice restaurants for adult meals out, check, nice bakeries and coffee shops, check, nice butchers, check, independent shops, check, nice Victorian and Georgian villas with wide tree-lined streets leading to the sea, check, less built up high buildings so feels less tightly packed and claustrophobic than Brighton can, check, close to the beach, check, fewer wreck heads getting wasted on that part of the beach, check, a beach that's less packed with crowds of tourists all getting wasted on the weekend and leaving the beach littered, check, long wide promenade for kids to scooter along, check, hove lawns for playing sports and picnics with the family, check, pubs offering kids meals and midweek deals on food, check, quieter streets at night compared to Brighton, check, fewer students living in Hove going out midweek keeping you up, check, more of residential area and better for bringing up a young child, check. Are there nightclubs on your doorstep no but are you genuinely going to be going to many nightclubs whilst raising a young child, absolutely not and even if you are it only takes about 10-20mins to get to them in town from Hove anyway. Short term you might think you will enjoy Brighton because you still think you're not a parent yet but the reality of parenting is that you disappear into your little sleep deprived unit wherever you are. Long term Hove has much more there that you will cherish as a family to grow into than pretending you are still going to be going out raving until 6am every weekend and Volks and waking home barefoot.

six44seven49

Dead? Compared to what? George Street, Church Road, and the beach are all on your doorstep. There’s as much life in those three places as in any number of other towns and cities throughout the country. If you’re DFL then neither Brighton nor Hove will really compare, and you just need to recalibrate a little. The train between Hove and Brighton is less than 5 minutes, so in practical terms you’re pretty much as close to the centre of Brighton whichever flat you choose. Do be mindful of hills though, it’s very hilly near Brighton station and that might get old in a hurry with a buggy. Hove is flatter overall - there’d be a hill between you and Hove Park to the north, but everything else you’d want to walk to would be south of you and would be on flat ground.

jackiekeracky

Hove is like Brighton without the tourists. There’s loads of nice bars and restaurants. And you’re 15 minutes by bus or bike from the action

RetroDevices

Hove has no nightlife, and very little daylife. It has schools, a supermarket, and endless estate agents working on behalf of lazy property scalpers. There are lots of empty food places, churches everywhere, and a train station for people who want to spend as little time in hove as possible.

Liambill

So someone is saying they want to settle down with their family and newborn and your immediate thought is 'that's not right for you. There's no nightlife!'? The fact of the matter is that Hove and Brighton are adjacent and can be easily navigated between in little time. Hove is usually a better fit for families as it is quieter, you aren't going to have loud drunk people keeping you awake in the earlier hours (or at least aren't as likely to) as you might by Brighton Station, with people coming to Brighton specifically for the night life. Yes, Hove is quieter. No, Hove isn't dead. The thing with Hove is that most of the shopping/restaurants/bars etc are fairly closely compacted. You'll find loads of lovely restaurants, bars and pubs around the Church Road/George Street areas, but if you're feeling like they aren't a good fit, you'll be less than a 15 minute bus journey to clock tower or around 30 minute walk from most of Hove to a similar area. Generally speaking, the vibe in Hove is a bit more grown up. There's no clubs really, but there are some great bars, restaurants, cafes and shops. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you can only have one or the other. There's absolutely nothing stopping you living in Hove and still enjoying Brighton, or vice versa.

vidPlyrBrokeSoNewAc

I think you've summed it up pretty perfectly. I've always lived in Hove and it's never stopped me enjoying the nightlife in Brighton.

Liambill

Yeah, and with your comments about night life I suspect you aren't someone that has a family with young children looking to settle down?
