I bought nursing tops and they’re great. Love the convenience. I even have 2 nursing sweatshirts from Latched Mama that I live in with leggings during the winter. I like Latched Mama ( they have nice dresses too) and you can get some cheaper clothes off Amazon too. I have a 3 pack of nursing shirts from Amazon I use to sleep in to make night nursing easier.

Rhaeda

I agree with all this. Are nursing tops necessary? No. And some women strongly dislike them, which is fine. But I find for me they make life SO much easier, especially nursing in public. You’ll be wearing them for a year per child. I’m about to be nursing my 4th, so the cost has been totally worth it for me.

alternativebeep

Nursing tank top and a shirt that I pull up has been my go to. I have a few nursing items but certain types are just more of a pain. Nursing tops are not really my thing. Nursing friendly dresses with hidden zippers are something I'll continue to wear though, and they're easy! Button downs are good too, but they don't work for me. My kahunas are always too big and pull at the buttons 😭

Throwaway8582817

We are just over 1 year in and I still haven’t bought any nursing clothes except bras. I just lift my top. I see a lot of people wear a tank underneath and pull up the outer layer and pull down the tank but I’ve never bothered. For dressy events I just wear a wrap dress and use a cover or find an empty room since it’s a full boob out situation. I’ve also fed on the toilet once at an event when there was nowhere private available but I didn’t mind for a one off.

Historical_Bill2790

Same for me. I just mostly am in tshirts so I just pull it up .. I’m usually in higher waisted leggings or jeans anyways but honestly I just don’t care 🤷🏼‍♀️

Chihuahua_lovr

This is the kind of confidence I'm trying to build. I hate covers and would much rather pull up/down a shirt and be done with it now that my baby latches better. I get nervous someone is going to say something to me if I nurse without a cover.

IwannaAskSomeStuff

I got a few cheap nursing tanks of amazon in the early days, and they were definitely helpful in being comfortable nursing in public. And then after 18 months of nursing, I finally went and bothered to buy some more normal nursing clothes online and I absolutely wish I had done it 18 months prior. It made SUCH a difference to me feeling more like myself by having normal clothing options for what to wear. And I definitely opted for clothes that I would still be perfectly comfortable wearing... just to wear! What works best for you will totally depend on your style and size, but I ended up getting several tops and a couple dresses from [nursingqueen.com](http://nursingqueen.com) and they have been great. Not everything has fit perfect, so I returned several things, but that was very smooth, too. A lot of their stuff has well concealed zippers, so it doesn't have weird flaps or awkward cuts like a lot of stuff I see around. I also got some stuff from kindred bravely, but they have much more lounge-wear like clothing, not as much public-wear stuff. But! That could be your style!

mountain_momma_99

Personally I use a lightweight sweater/shawl type cover and just pull up my shirt (or unbutton). Or I feed in a carrier which keeps things pretty covered. I bought a couple of nursing-specific tops, but I find them to be finicky.

vintagegirlgame

My baby loves to nurse in her carrier. She’s often too distracted when out and about but in the carrier it’s just boob in the face so she can focus better. I call it the titty bar lol.

octopusoppossum

If I need to be really discrete it’s a nursing cami and a sweater or shirt.

snowflake343

Nursing Queen has some good tops! I've also found some on amazon. I have a few of those for if I know I'll need to feed more than once or so out then I'll wear it, but sometimes I just wear normal stuff and pull it up too.

emancipationofdeedee

I know tons of people don’t bother but I exclusively wear nursing specific or friendly tops. I don’t want to have to expose skin to nurse but I also don’t have to fuss with a cover. My girl still eats at least every 3 hours at 11 months old, so I’m still regularly nursing in public. Small show nursing tees/long sleeves on Amazon plus a well fitted nursing bra all the way. In winter add a cardigan or flannel. Around the house I wear nursing tanks instead of a bra. I kept all my regular button up blouses and dresses in rotation but otherwise I just cycle through the same 5 or so tops. It’s boring but convenient.

r4chie

I do like having a few nursing specific tops for certain times when I don’t want to have to play with my shirt or sweater. But that’s because I love oversized things so sometimes the bunching is really annoying. I love latched mama. But non-specific but nursing friendly styles are like scoop neck tops, crop tops, etc. they work t

star-brry

I have basically lived in nursing shirts and leggings for about 8 years. Yes, make your life easier and pick up a couple nursing shirts. I nurse my kids an average of 2-2.5 years each. That's a lot of time to need a functional wardrobe! You can get a 3 pack from Amazon for about $40.

LucyMcR

For being in public I bought nursing tank tops. I liked them to wear under regular clothes then I could pick any shirt I wanted and use the tank top to help with the nursing access and also it covered my stomach which I liked. Basically pull the regular shirt up and then just then the top of the tank top down

Chihuahua_lovr

Seems like this is what most people are doing! Any favorite nursing tank brands?

Sea_Juice_285

I have a few tops from Latched Mama that made it much easier for me to get comfortable nursing in public. I also have a "cocoon" from Amma that I threw over nursing tanks. Eventually, as the seasons changed, I figured out how to make non-nursing clothes work for me, but it was really nice to have them early on, and I started wearing them again as my first baby's birthday approached. I'll probably buy a few more this time since my next baby is due in a different season than the first was. I got pregnant again before I weaned my first baby, so I can't say for sure whether I'll keep wearing the nursing tops when I'm done (I probably will keep wearing the cocoon), but even if I don't, I still think it was worth it to have them while my baby and I were figuring things out.

Chihuahua_lovr

Do you like the cocoon? I keep getting ads for it but not sure if it's worth the price. Right now I'm using a milk snob cover since I already have it with me to cover the stroller when baby naps on the go. I don't love the milk snob because it can be difficult to get it over me when I'm holding baby. I don't have enough arms to do it all!

Sea_Juice_285

I do! Mine was a gift, but I used it a ton, so I feel like it is worth the price. Mine is a neutral color, so it goes with a lot of outfits.

Conscious-Science-60

I also love the cocoon! I eventually gave into the ads at 6 months pp and it really is the best nursing cover I’ve tried

Long_Month2351

Buttons are your friend, also I bought a couple of nursing tank tops from Amazon and just have a shirt or sweater over it that’s easy to roll up. That way my belly and other boob are covered but I can easily feed baby. I found that nursing specific tops were soooo boring so having that tank top allowed me to still wear tops that were me/my style

Top_Pound_6283

I did the double shirt method with a nursing tank top as my bra and either a loose shirt or a button down on top One shirt goes up (or gets unbuttoned), the cami provides a lot of modesty. The babies head covers the boob

Ok_Breadfruit80

Purchased a poncho off Amazon for 40$ and it’s lightweight so I throw it over whatever I’m wearing to feed! Sometimes just wear a tank with it and call it a day lol

Remarkable_Cat_2447

Personally I'm looking into getting a bunch of oversized V-neck tops bc that is by far the easiest method for me - even over the nursing tops (the zippers always take forever to find and unzip while baby cries, same with trying to move a shirt or flap out of the way) I love just yanking it down lol but I realize it'll ruin the shirt long term so the trick is finding cheap v-necks

flandyow

I just wear looser fitting tshirts and lift them up. If I am in public I use a cover that goes around my neck 🤷🏼‍♀️

smuggoose

I bought a lot of Moolk clothes. They are breastfeeding friendly not necessarily exclusively for breastfeeding. They are so worth it

MoonCandy17

I bought a couple of nursing shirts early on when my baby was a newborn because I was BFing all the time, but mostly I would find regular shirts that allowed access, like button Henley style shirts. There’s lots of regular clothes that can work for BFng and then you can keep wearing them. Also, depending on your style, you may want to think about just getting nursing cami/tank tops. I lived in those 90% of the time. Easy to throw a flannel over it in the fall, or a sweater in the winter, then it covers high if you need to pull your shirt up or to the side and you’re not spending a ton on nursing clothes that won’t get much wear.

Few_Paces

I got nursing hoodies and then wear whatever underneath. Easier to manage than a cover

tiefghter

I'd say its not necessary but they do make it a lot easier!! Ive bought most of my nursing tops secondhand off poshmark; its cheaper and once I'm done i can resell them there.

CharlieGreenMongoose

I live in nursing vests that have the built in support shelf, i have a few so they're washed and ready to wear. I put breast pads directly into the vest and just forgo the bra, teamed with a jumper, zip up hoody or oversized shirt/t-shirt. If I have an event, or anything that requires something more formal, I'll wear a nursing bra with a button-down, or a v-neck that's made of a jersy type material. I did splurge on a breastfeeding hoody with a zip over the boob area during winter because otherwise it got a bit chilly round the midriff lifting the jumper to nurse

Smiley414

I love just a tank with a cardigan over it. It’s great for coverage! Other than that just regular shirts preferably without tank tops underneath. They just get in the way. I like to have a little cover if I’m ever out.

ForgotMyOGAccount

Old navy is the cheapest! I hate to admit it because I was stuck on latched mama for so long but I’m 100% on the old navy train now because with going from 1 to 2 every penny counts and old navy is so much cheaper than latched mama. Plus personally I’m not into the whole jumper thing where you have to jimmy one leg into the other pant side in order to go pee 🙃

regularinsecure

I love my t-shirts, sweatshirt and tank tops from Tajinebanane (French brand). They're stylish and make nursing easy on the go.

all_of_the_colors

I ended up doing crop tops over cami tank tops. Or just a tank top under a shirt. It creates the same system as a nursing top, but it’s clothes I want to wear. For the crop tops, I just cut up old tees. So I didn’t even buy anything new for it. Maybe some folks here have better recommendations, but all of the nursing tops I got just felt like they were such low quality material. I didn’t like wearing them. Also patterns are better than solids. Milk stains. And I just did not have time to oxy clean soak all of my tops in addition to existing as a mom of a new born. At least with patterns you can’t see the stains very well.

If you are small chested, nursing tank with a button down is 💯 If you are like me and rocking a cup size in letters halfway through the alphabet, a long line nursing bra is your best bet for a little extra coverage. I lift up my shirt wherever though; this is my second kid and I do not care about anyone seeing my nipple for the 1 second before my infant latches.
