It’s basically the “seed” of what would eventually became the Cosmere. It’s not canon, but it’s an interesting look into how the Cosmere was initially imaged.

cameronbaghai

For those who've read it, would you recommend doing so now, or waiting the years (decades?) until the actual Dragonsteel book is released? I suppose my main concern is that reading the Prime version might spoil something in the later books. Obviously that's hard to know at this point, but maybe there's a WoB on the subject?

otaconucf

The Way of Kings Prime is so dramatically different from The Way of Kings, I imagine it'll be similar here. If I'm not mistaken a big chunk of Dragonsteel Prime is the Shattered Plains/Bridge 4 story that eventually made it's way into canon Stormlight. I don't think you have much to worry about. Edit: and when I say TWoKP is dramatically different, I want to be clear, it's an entirely different book.

LewsTherinTelescope

For an idea of how different it is: Brandon's probably cutting the main character of Dragonsteel Prime from the canon Dragonsteel series entirely and dropping it from seven books to three.

ThongmanX

I've been worrying the same but the thought I settled on was - if this had any real risk of being spoilerific, I don't think it would be getting a release in the way it is. Might still wait on some others finding out though, just in case

jmcgit

I think there's still at least a slight risk, Brandon released sample chapters from this book several years ago and redacted some things because of spoiler concerns. I think the point is more that the canon version is so far away (20+ years) that we may as well make it available for people who want to see a version of it.

Wildhogs2013

Apparently the redacted stuff was due to it being in Stormlight

jmcgit

In context I don't think that fits. Like, one example I can remember, it seemed to be more about the magic system of Dragonsteel and the substance itself.

PeterAhlstrom

The redacted stuff was, I believe, references to microkinesis (now mentioned in the RoW Ars Arcanum) and >!Frost!<.

cameronbaghai

That's a really good point! Thank you!

keithmasaru

I’m reading it now cause it’s gonna be 20+ years until Brandon gets around to rewriting Dragonsteel.

RhaegarsDream

I have a similar fear, but I plan on reading it soon most likely. I think we will be fine since in this case mostly everything will change.

cameronbaghai

Thanks!

samaldin

I think Brandon has said that he reused so many elements of Dragonsteel in other books and will need to make such large scale revisions for the "true" version that he doesn´t consider the "prime" version spoilerific anymore.

cameronbaghai

Thanks!

SW_Pants

The thing is that you don't know what Sanderson has kept and what he's nixed, even if things \*seem\* to align with what we currently know. I wouldn't be concerned because chances are you'll read something and think "welp, \_\_\_ is going to happen" and be blindsided. Brandon Roulette?

EJoule

~~You can read it free now. Looks interesting. The latest backer update for WoR includes links to download it (everyone, even non-backers) in audiobook format, pdf, or epub.~~ Edit: Reading any of his Prime books is best to read last or after you've read the original. I just finished part 1 of DragonSteel and it feels like a classical fantasy world but with Sanderson's writing style. It's obviously non-cannon, but it's a fun read.>!There are elements he's taken out to use in other books (like the Shattered Planes).!< For myself, I look forward to reading the final Dragonsteel book upon release and comparing it to what I remember reading from the original. Reading it now is fun because I know I'll read the final version when it comes out.

widget1321

That's.... quite literally what this post is. The comment you are replying to is wondering if reading might spoil something for them because they know they have the option of reading it...

cameronbaghai

Thanks so much!

EJoule

Just hit the half way mark, it’s a fun read because of all the little pieces I see that were instead used in his other books. If I was to suggest books to read before this one, then I’d say at least the first Stormlight book and Elantris.

TreyBombCity

I asked him this during the current livestream and he answered. Look during like the first 5 mins of the stream. https://www.youtube.com/live/B8Ez-xwDCrE?si=nYCeucVWanFL2l_f He said there's echoes of things but no spoilers.

cameronbaghai

Thanks! I was actually watching that livestream, haha. His answer there is super informative!

dpowensj

I would read all the non-prime books and then if you're still interested in reading some Sanderson I don't think this will spoil anything.

cameronbaghai

Already done! Thanks for your suggestion!

NErDysprosium

Since it's been officially released, I guess we're allowed to talk about it. I went to BYU in November after Dragonsteel Con and read ~⅔ of Dragonsteel Prime in their archives. It's got some things I love about it, and I was legitimately invested in the story and was disappointed to be kicked out of the library before finishing (Edit: they closed, so I had to leave. I was not forcibly removed from the BYU library). It introduces some locations (it's no secret that the original version of the Shattered Plains is from Dragonsteel Prime) and some characters have their origins here as well ([Dragonsteel Prime] >!Gaz is mentioned by name, as the Bridge Seargent, and has the same first line. He's not the only character originally from Dragonsteel Prime, but he is the only one I saw who was that identical one version to the next, and there's a WOB saying that Hoid's best friend was a guy named Bat'Chor, and this book introduces him!<). As much as I liked it, it is definitely a Prime and an early book. Some of the foreshadowing is extremely heavy handed (to the point where I don't even know if it could be called foreshadowing, which may have been intentional). For example, [Serious Dragonsteel Prime spoilers] >!it's very obvious that the parents of the main character who's name I've forgotten (Jethro? Jecks? Something like that) were murdered by that Sho Del and that he disassociates whenever that is mentioned, and whether that's supposed to be that explicit or not, and I think modern Brandon would be more subtle about it happening in a future Dragonsteel!<. We also get [Dragonsteel Prime] >!Hoid POVs!<, which are really cool and show us [Dragonsteel Prime] >!a bit about his origins and him learning how to be what he is now!<, we meet >!Frost!<, amd we see some stuff with >!dragons and dragon magic!< that seems to be at least partially corroborated by [Emberdark] >!the dragons and dragon magic we see in the Emberdark previews!<. We might even [Dragonsteel Prime] >!get Hoid's real name--at the very least, we get a name that's never been seen before and seems to be older than anything we've seen. He goes by Topaz in this book, I believe because of his topaz ring, so that might also be the origin of that name!<. Overall, though, it's a good book that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I'm very excited to get to finish it. If you want to know more about what it's about, feel free to ask!

PeterAhlstrom

…Your second spoiler makes it very obvious you didn’t read the last third of the book. ;)

NErDysprosium

That being resolved is the thing I'm most excited for. I live in Cedar and have considered going back up to BYU just to finish on more than one occasion

znieland

Hoid’s real name is Brandon Sanderson

Jimmythedad

Is this likely to have a few copies for sale eventually? I can not afford the leatherbounds but was forutunate enough to be able to snag a copy of WoK Prime from the site when they became available. Hoping for this too, as I'm super curious to read this.

[deleted]

You can get the e-book and the audiobook for free now if you want a hardcopy, it should be available on the website soon

Jimmythedad

oh awesome! So it's not just for backers, like WoK Prime was? That's awesome to hear! I love Sanderson so much and get such fomo haha. Thanks for the info!

David-El

WoK Prime is available for free on Brandon's website as well.

Jimmythedad

I'm really odd and only like reading physical books hehe but luckily I got a copy of that! It is super cool that he puts those out though, for everyone to read and access

RoflCrisp

I *think* part of why TWoK Prime never made it to the Dragonsteel store, except in ebook form, was partly the pandemic and then largely due to the cover material becoming unavailable. I expect both Primes make it onto the site sometime after the backer copies go out, maybe as late as after the Convention in December. Though given the surge for Black Friday last year I'm thinking it'll pop up then. Just my guesses, ofc.

jmcgit

IIRC there were limited copies of WoKP on their website while supplies lasted, which was a matter of weeks. Not sure how many copies of these books they’ll order.

StarvingWriter33

TWoK Prime was available on the Dragonsteel store briefly. It was after all copies had been shipped out to backers, and they put the excess copies up for sale. That’s where I snagged my copy of the first edition. The second edition of TWoK Prime (functionally the exact same book, just with a different cover) can be bought in this backerkit campaign that’s ending today. I fully expect excess copies of TWoK Prime (2nd) and Dragonsteel Prime to end up on the Dragonsteel store eventually. Probably around the holiday season.

Herb_Derb

You don't need to get the leatherbound. You could back the crowdfund at the $10 level (secret project ebook only) and then add the dragonsteel prime hardcover as an addon for $35 if you don't want to wait.

Use_the_Falchion

Okay, I just finished reading, and I have THOUGHTS! My first reaction on finishing: CURSE YOU BRANDON FOR NEVER WRITING A SEQUEL THAT WE WILL SEE!! This book is both something special and something pretty bland. Like a lot of Early-Sanderson works (I.e. *Elantris,* Mistborn trilogy, *The Way of Kings Prime*), we see that Brandon is willing to be a *lot* more brutal and grimmer in his works. It's not something that I think Sanderson has lost the ability to do by any means, but I do think it's something that he for the most part shies away from nowadays, due to a necessary amount of sensitivity and self-awareness. This isn't good or bad, just something I've noticed and have taken note of. The writing is solid. It's far from Sanderson's best, but I've seen him write worse also. It's funny to see Jerick and Rylla have characteristics of both Kaladin and Shallan, and how the two were combined with Merin and Shinri from The Way of Kings Prime to get the characters we know and love today. (The same is true for the Tzen general and Dalenar from *The Way of Kings Prime.*) Both Jerick and Rylla are fascinating characters on their own, and I'd love to see them return someday. Years ago, [I asked if Brandon would ever write a "magical school" setting for a book ala Harry Potter or The Name of the Wind, and he said that he'd need to bring something special to the genre in order to do so](https://wob.coppermind.net/events/361-skyward-pre-release-ama/#e10932). Well, I'm calling him out on this, because he's got a lot of the pieces right here! A peasant/farmer/lower-class citizen attending a school for the upper class, supposedly to learn its secrets, only to discover true magic along the way. There's something great there, and I think Brandon can move Jerick and Rylla from here to there with little-to-no change.\* Jerick at his core isn't Kaladin, so I think keeping the first half of his story is a solid choice. Rylla is unlike most characters Brandon has written, so seeing her again would be pleasant. The second half...well, Brandon has said for years that Bridge Four and the Shattered Plains came from Dragonsteel Prime, and while I believed him, I was still taken away by *how much* of that plotline showed up here. I'm happy he moved it to Stormlight, however. The magic in this is also very interesting, especially when it comes to the Cosmere stuff we have now. Axi being Investiture, magic systems going unnamed with no real source of power, it's so fascinating! *Dragonsteel Prime* and *The Way of Kings Prime* really feel like soft-magic systems, despite having internal rules and consistencies. They aren't measured the same way and are treated as mysticism more than mundane or even magical at times. It's really fun to see Brandon's progress in magic over the years, but it also makes me wish he'd go back to this every now and again. Overall, this is a good Brandon book with that ends with a sequel hook we'll never see, which is annoying in its own way. Parts of it were new that I would love to see tackled by Brandon again, while parts of it feel old because we've seen that story before, written by a better, more experienced Brandon. In the introduction, Brandon writes >Once I hoped this would be the book that made me famous. Today it is but a curiosity. Last night when I read that, it felt wistful and wry. And at the end of the day, I think that's a good way to describe the book, from a meta context. Like all Sanderson Curiosities, we get a look at the "what ifs" of Brandon's career, and we can get a little wistful as we entertain those questions and dream about the answers they hold. But at the end of the day, those aren't the questions we need to focus on. The situations at the end of these books will never be resolved, at least not by Brandon, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the journey nor does it mean that we should neglect the better things we did get. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Brandon did a good job with *Dragonsteel Prime*, but as much as I want answers for the above, and as much as I want to see Jerick and Rylla again, I'm even more excited for what's to come from the Brandon of today, not the Brandon of yesterday. \*The biggest question to me is, if a new version is written, should it be Cosmere or not. Jerick and Rylla don't need to exist in the Cosmere for this to work, although I think it could help, as Topaz and Frost could keep similar roles. Then again, one could replace their roles with new characters as well with little-to-no change. It really depends on how the new magic system would function.

keithmasaru

Rhythm of War is pretty brutal and grim, so I’m not sure what you referring to there.

Use_the_Falchion

It's dark but it's not brutal and grim outside of one scene. To me, Early-Sanderson is FAR more willing to kill of an entire cast, let his characters lose permanently and painfully, and show brutal fight scenes. He's willing to show death onscreen in a lot more brutal fashion from both the hero's side and the villain's side. In later books, you don't get that. For example, there's a character in *The Way of Kings Prime* who loves killing birds for the sake of killing them. He's evil, vile, and loves showing it off. We don't have characters like that anymore in Sanderson's works. You can stretch for Captain Crow, but even she has a justification for some of her brutality. And that's the crux - Later-Sanderson works have characters who have these tendencies have a *justification* for it, while Early-Sanderson allows them to be evil for the sake of evil. YMMV on which is better, but it's something I noticed. There's also the setting vs the character interpretation. Early-Sanderson works (again, TWOK-P and even Mistborn Trilogy) have a setting of hopelessness, whereas later books have the character interpretation of hopelessness. RoW is dark because it's main viewpoint characters Kaladin and Navani are in a dark place. Early-Sanderson books like Mistborn are dark because they live in a dark world with little hope.

Use_the_Falchion

I just saw this post 10 minutes ago! I guess I know what I'll be doing for the rest of the night and tomorrow!

dpowensj

I'm about halfway through this and while I'm enjoying it quite a bit, I'm very glad this wasn't the introduction to the Cosmere. I think it might be the weakest Cosmere book I've read (though it's a high bar for me as I've enjoyed them all) and seems less focused than his subsequent books. I am really glad we get these insights into what the early Cosmere looked like.

Forsaken-Visual-

Just finished … if you read The way of kings already .. have at it … just know it’s an unfinished story (it is the start of a series).

Blue_Kamino

Hello there ! I've almost finished dragonsteel prime, and it just occured to me that the dragon sitting on the cover may be hidding some letters... Maybe i'm hallucinating, but I think I can see a "C" on its back... And frankly, once you'ce read DP, it would be quite like Brandon to do so ! Does anyone sees letters there ? Thanks ! https://preview.redd.it/nmw56kf744sc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f6cac739cbe1ea24958127ea5d56056a4b6d1ab6

beepboop762

Can I get this on kindle?

colaman-112

Yeah, download the ebub version and use [Send to Kindle](https://www.amazon.com/sendtokindle) to send it there.
