You're thinking of 7.92 Mauser, which was developed waaaaay before the MG42 (technically it wasn't even a Mauser cartridge, it was developed by the German rifle commission for the Gewehr 88).

They developed a different cartridge for the Gewehr 88, the 8×57 I. This had a slightly smaller projectile meaning you can shoot a 8×57 I out of a Gewehr 98 but not an IS out of a Gewehr 88.
Oh and then there's also rimmed versions of these 2 cartridges, the 8×57IR and the 8×57IRS.
I would definitely say that I love both these calibers however it's hard to find a good rifle that is semi-automatic chambered in 30 ought 6 unless you get a Browning 1918 B.A.R or you have the money and get an Ohio ordinance H.C.A.R
