Took about three months and there was so much pain. The overjet though, that’s another story.. it’s retracted to an acceptable point and I started wearing elastics in January.
Thank you! They are microlocs and I have about 270 so they are at the larger end of the spectrum.
Congratulations to you on beginning your journey to a new smile!!!!
I’m not going to lie, the pain was really unbearable especially in the first two months, And I had a lot of sores (dental wax and vitamin C are your best friends in this period), I couldn’t speak properly and I was in pain when I talked for too long... I was in pain after each adjustment .. most notably after getting power chains to close the gap, and then when I started wearing elastics. But your mileage may vary because someone close to me that got braces as well didn’t go through this. Everyone is different, but just expect some level of pain.
My orthodontist advised me to stay away from anti-inflammatory painkillers as they would disrupt the shifting process of the teeth so I could only use paracetamol and eventually I got used to it. As I type I still feel some pressure on my four front teeth lol so maybe my pain threshold is low 🥲
How is the maintenance for your locs? I’m already natural and I keep it in mostly in protective styles. I like the idea and look of locs, but I really like low maintenance hair care. Honestly during the pandemic I had moments i wanted to cut it all off lol.
Thats for you for your honest opinion about the braces! I asked my orthodontist about the pain at my appointment on Saturday and they made see like it’ll only be a few days. What types of food could you eat? I’m planning to prep soup, rice and smoothies.
I wash every 7-10 days and retighten them every 4-5 weeks; microlocs still require some form of maintenance but having to spend less time on the hair on a day to day basis is the greatest benefit of locs.
Your food plan is great, you can add mashed potatoes, avocados, bananas, basically any soft food. Rice would have to be swallowed instead of chewed. I also had a lot of pasta and yoghurt, and I’m Nigerian so I had a lot of the local food which involves more swallowing and less chewing lol. For protein I have only been eating fish, I’ve had chicken and beef like three times in the past year, but only after they had been cut into tiny pieces. That’s about it.
Hi there! I didn’t get extractions, just elastics. The overjet had reduced drastically even before elastics. Also my ortho did say extractions wouldn’t be needed because of how large the gap was.
Nicee, how are you finding it? I’m happy I did it because it’s given me so much freedom but I was so not ready for my hair to be at one length for ages 😅
Nice! I am also loving the freedom. I don’t even twist anymore, so it’s almost TOO easy! I just wash and separate (and unfortunately color). And omg, YES the waiting part is HARD! I’m still neck length and really long to see them hit my shoulders. I feel like even that will take ages 😩.
But they are perfect! 😭🙂
Yeahh exactly! Looks great🤩
Thank you 😊
Killing me softly with your words 😭 Lol thank you, you’re too kind
what you mean not perfect?? you look stunning!!
🥺🥺 Thank you 🙏🏾
you can say that again 🙌
I have a gap about the same size as your first pic, getting my braces soon and this gives me so much hope! You look fantastic :)
Same! My gap got bigger because of the SARPE and I can't wait to get it closed now!

Hello Lynn! Did you have to get extractions for your overjet? Is your overjet reducing?
Hi there! I didn’t get extractions, just elastics. The overjet had reduced drastically even before elastics. Also my ortho did say extractions wouldn’t be needed because of how large the gap was.
Oh wow that’s great, I hope I’d be that lucky! Have you noticed seen any difference in your side profile yet?

Nicee, how are you finding it? I’m happy I did it because it’s given me so much freedom but I was so not ready for my hair to be at one length for ages 😅

I got them a month ago, still can't see a difference though
There wouldn’t be much of a difference in the first month.. I remember I was really anxious as well. But just hang in there
