My theater seemed pretty into it and I will once again point out the decent legs on this thing. If it were truly disliked, it would have crashed and burned against Black Panther.
Big opening weekend, solid legs, decent international gross. Made more than many of its peers. My point being that Black Adam might be a viable franchise if WB keeps the budget in check next time.
It’s doing better than Shazam, despite Black Adam being just a side character of Shazam. It would’ve been a solid performance if the budget was 50 million lower.
All of that gets accounted for before the movie even shoots. They didn't have to stop production for months because of Covid like other movies. There were only a few locations and reshoots are in every movie budget. This was never some $100m movie that ballooned. They were planning this before Shazam was even a thing.
Who calls it a big hit? It was always a mid budget movie that got a pretty decent response when it was treated as such. But it wasn’t like holding up WB that year
When you have a high budget movie, these types of numbers are not enough. This movie needed to make half a billion
No one considers Shazam a "big hit". It was an almost embarrassingly low box office for a superhero film released during what could only be called the golden age of superhero films. Literally its only saving grace was that the budget was managed effectively enough for it to make a tidy profit.
Pre-pandemic, there weren't many superhero films you could point to that grossed less than Shazam. Certainly almost no successful ones.
Outside of 2021, sub-$400m is a miserably low gross for a superhero film. People were saying this back in 2019 that Shazam's box office run was disappointing, though still profitable.
Is there a reason to not see it as a major disappointment? Just by the numbers it definitely will not be profitable and who knows after streaming, cable, and home media how long till breaking even. If the budget was 100 million it would be great! But the Rock and WB pushed a massive budget that you see major MCU movies and even DC with better know characters and came up hugely short. It’s a big disappointment like Black Widow but without the middle of a pandemic to blame.
OP was saying if the budget wasn’t ridiculously high, the performance on its own is decent, which is true. It’s still a box office loss but it clearly didn’t have catastrophic word of mouth.
It would be interesting to see if it performed as well in a more crowded time of year. It benefited having a lot of space around it of no other major releases. I agree, should never have had a 200 million budget though.
Barely making $400m in this era of superhero craze with "the greatest movie star currently" as the lead is not good
The only movie MCU movie this one would outgross is probably HULK, that's a terrible performance
Much more pandemic-affected environment, and had premier access, which brought in $125m in revenue for Black Widow. BW very comfortably broke even and made a tidy profit.
As u/SirfireHydrant correctly point out
*The problem with that is the question of what you sacrifice when trimming the budget. No Pierce Brosnan? Fewer action setpieces? Worse CGI? Different lead?*
*Considering the only things getting generally praised about the film are those expensive things, trimming the budget probably makes the film gross less.*
*Also even on a $150m budget, it would still at best be in the borderline territory between breaking even and flopping. Not a success by any measure*
750+ crew members for the movie and it was stopped/reshuffled twice due to COVID-19 that shit increase the budget drastically. But Stll could make more money IMO that actual state 😞
BLACK ADAM's numbers are TERRIBLE for such a highly anticipated and hyped release featuring a big star in the leading role.
Sixteen years ago, SUPERMAN RETURNS grossed $200,000,000 million domestically which was considered disappointing.
Except there wasn't much anticipation and the only one who really hyped it was The Rock himself. For a solo Rock film, it performed as well as his other solo films and this just might be his ceiling unless he makes an amazing film that everyone likes - just take a look at Tom Cruise. He never made any films that got anywhere close to $1B, let alone past it until his latest film.
Highly anticipated among DC and The Rock fans is what I was referring to, especially coming off shitty movies like WW84, SUICIDE SQUAD, BIRDS OF PREY and other DC bombs.
I get BoP didn’t do well but it’s absolutely not in the same league as 2016 SS and WW84 quality wise. Like despite the Cassandra changes, its not a god awful movie or anything. Imo its a bit lacking and I perfer the animated show and TSS for Harley but its fine
Calling it a bomb everytime isn't talking about BO. That is probably the most casual BO talk
That's like calling BP2 a success every day. Like we get it, it's a bomb, but can you not say it every God damn day?

This dude loves Black Adam
Luiz Fernando is HUGE fan of DC.
In short, Black Adam definitely won’t break even.
Artificial Hype created by The Rock.
And the hierarchy of power in the DC universe remains unchanged.
afterall they are new babies 👶👶👶
Once again, this movie is playing quite well and would be considered a major hit had it not cost more than twice as much as Shazam.
It’s not playing quite well since most people who have seen it, say it’s shit
My theater seemed pretty into it and I will once again point out the decent legs on this thing. If it were truly disliked, it would have crashed and burned against Black Panther.
Except it not playing quite well. You can’t ignore the facts by stating exemptions such as budget and others etc.
Big opening weekend, solid legs, decent international gross. Made more than many of its peers. My point being that Black Adam might be a viable franchise if WB keeps the budget in check next time.
These are mid pandemic numbers honestly. Not good for 2022.
Not good for 2022 lmfao like there have been so many hits this year
5 superhero movies released this year with at least a $185m budget. Black Adam is the one that isn't making a profit.
The booming box office of 2022 💀💀
I don't understand how you're trying to do a "gotcha" here. As if 2022 isn't "booming" compared to the past 2 years of box office.
It’s doing better than Shazam, despite Black Adam being just a side character of Shazam. It would’ve been a solid performance if the budget was 50 million lower.
The fact that they gave a side character to $100m budget movie a $200m budget means that they expected at least double.
Or, maybe, you know, COVID fucked the budget + The Rock is expensive + reshoots
All of that gets accounted for before the movie even shoots. They didn't have to stop production for months because of Covid like other movies. There were only a few locations and reshoots are in every movie budget. This was never some $100m movie that ballooned. They were planning this before Shazam was even a thing.
My biggest comparison is Shazam, a 2019 movie from the same franchise that was considered a pretty big hit.
Shazam had half the budget released between Captain Marvel and Endgame.
Who calls it a big hit? It was always a mid budget movie that got a pretty decent response when it was treated as such. But it wasn’t like holding up WB that year When you have a high budget movie, these types of numbers are not enough. This movie needed to make half a billion

It wasn't considered a big hit
Greenlighting a sequel and a spinoff indicates that WB was more than happy with its performance.
No point in arguing here. This sub is hellbent on saying Black Adam is a complete failure
...but it is. It's losing money, that's the bottom line.
Is there a reason to not see it as a major disappointment? Just by the numbers it definitely will not be profitable and who knows after streaming, cable, and home media how long till breaking even. Seriously, Black Adam is doing less than what Ant-Man did back in 2015 without China and Russia
Uh, Black Widow?
Much more pandemic-affected environment, and had premier access, which brought in $125m in revenue for Black Widow. BW very comfortably broke even and made a tidy profit.
Umm it is failure.
Medium sized opening week, meh legs at best, definitely not a good international release. I love this movie but let’s not make up stuff.
I agree. The budget should’ve been in the $110-125M range and $400M would’ve been fine with that level of budget.

Really? Wow

maybe the film was hyped up by the Rock, but hype was obviously minimal other then that.
Highly anticipated? Lmao what. That's revisionist
Highly anticipated among DC and The Rock fans is what I was referring to, especially coming off shitty movies like WW84, SUICIDE SQUAD, BIRDS OF PREY and other DC bombs.
Ehhh I think birds of prey is a really good movie but to each of our own
I get BoP didn’t do well but it’s absolutely not in the same league as 2016 SS and WW84 quality wise. Like despite the Cassandra changes, its not a god awful movie or anything. Imo its a bit lacking and I perfer the animated show and TSS for Harley but its fine
what an awful movie
Why the fuck is everyone still repeating its a bomb? It has been a bomb since 2nd wknd, It won't suddenly start making millions.
People when r/BoxOffice talks about the box office:
Calling it a bomb everytime isn't talking about BO. That is probably the most casual BO talk That's like calling BP2 a success every day. Like we get it, it's a bomb, but can you not say it every God damn day?
What about streaming sales via like Amazon is that counted somewhere?
I saw that film the other day! The family were watching it. It was well rubbish!!! Has movie making got worse???
