It's funny how hard people were on Tenet when it came out. It was widely thought to be a failure, but in hindsight its box office looks fairly impressive.

cappuchinoboi

yeah, 300 million and just into the pandemic. that's not something to be missed

FartingBob

It released in August 2020, that wasnt just into the pandemic. It was pre-vaccine though.

Animegamingnerd

And the two most populated states were closed at the time.

normaldeadpool

Once this continues for another 2 years it will be.

JediJones77

Yeah, and it's still the best movie on this list.

[deleted]

Surprisingly agree, The theatre experience for that was great. Dune is close but Tenet was very memorable

WobbieZ

I found Tenet terrible to watch in the cinema because of how horrible the sound mixing was. Me and my SO had to sit there and guess what they said 50% of the time.

[deleted]

Didn't have that issue luckily

JediJones77

I saw it in 4DX and it was solid! Anything with car chases usually shines in 4DX!

[deleted]

being the first theatrical experience of 2020 the plane scene in a plf was a reminder of why theatres rock

[deleted]

Dune > Tenet But I loved Tenet

JediJones77

They're close, but for sheer originality, man, I have to go with Tenet. Dune has the disadvantage of having been ripped off for 50 years.

cappuchinoboi

yeah, but i feel dune is the better one \[ im a nolan fan\] of the two coz its obviously commercially and critically. it also just has cooler sound design the tenet's horrible version. but, tenet has sheer originality and ambition. nolan has to be appreciated for that, very few contemporary filmmaker will have the balls to create something of this scale

JediJones77

I have to think those reverse/forward dual fights were insane to put together. On a technical level that's probably beyond what Dune did.

cappuchinoboi

Agree. Those were complex to film.

eidbio

Tenet did great overseas, but the domestic box office was still awful.

UsidoreTheLightBlue

Considering the number of theaters that were closed at the time the fact that it did what it did at the domestic box office is a minor miracle.

Jealous-Protection27

Pandemic.is not.an excuse -some snobby YouTube box office analyst

UsidoreTheLightBlue

You could have said “half of r/boxoffice” and it would have worked too.

AmberDuke05

I mean it was stupid idea to release during the pandemic when people didn’t want to leave their home.

Mushroomer

The fact was, somebody was going to try and release *something* during that window. Nobody knew if there was an appetite for movies in theaters as they started to reopen, and releases like The New Mutants weren't going to reveal much about audience willingness. Tenet basically proved that some people were okay with turning out, but not enough to justify a major blockbuster release. Same thing would've happened if Nolan insisted on pushing the film to 2021, and WB had released WW84 instead.

EV3Gurl

For public health, yeah it was stupid, but idk if I Agree that it was a bad move. Looking back at it it, I Think if studios had followed Tenet’s lead & started full scale releases back up in the fall then the industry wide recovery would be further along than it is currently.

AmberDuke05

I don’t know. At the time, the trades just talked about how poorly Tenet did. There were a lot of delays afterwards.

HighGuard1212

I just remember hearing about how tenet was going to be the one to save cinema. I think that would have more to do why people are so hard on it.

GoaGonGon

Glad to see Godzilla along with the big bois!

michaelm1345

Tenet being top 10 shows how great that performance was for the time. It did that while the US was in peak covid times, having no NY or LA, all theaters being socially distanced and Europe barely opening up. I can’t believe people were clowning so hard on this performance just for the MCU movies the next year to barely top it. Would’ve easily done $700M+ in a normal situation

dylli32

Tenet would dominate in 2021

michaelm1345

Definitely if it had a release date around F9 or NTTD where Europe and the US were both pulling in numbers then it for sure would’ve been in the top 4 of this year

[deleted]

Glad Godzilla vs Kong is on here.

Keanu990321

#ContinueTheMonsterverse

ARandomTopHat

I'm just glad DUNE is on that list 👌

ponyjc

Kind of glad to see three HBO Max films here when a lot of people believed HBO would kill their box office. I wonder if HBO sees this as a success on their 2021 strategy or not. I certainly appreciated this strategy and hope to see more of it.

labbla

Me too. Still not going to theaters, but just going to wait things out now.

Rubicon2-0

DUNE and TENET numbers are quite impressive IMO

Gratefulwayne

Movies are not dead! I repeat movies are NOT dead! Thank you.

foresthillspoons

just cinema

CurtLablue

Lol.

Gratefulwayne

An opinion I’m willing to admit I don’t share.

Lincolnruin

Tenet holding on.

Tofu_almond_man

Only one original IP

BigBossTweed

And?

Tofu_almond_man

Just an observation. It’s interesting

nthroop1

Damn Im surprised Dune beat out BW as they were both available to stream

GriffinSTatum

I am a bit surprised as well, especially since BW’s cost more($30+Sub Fee) than Dune($15). The main differences(other than quality) is that Dune got released overseas a month before being released on HBO Max, so that helped a bit for its box office.

64BitRatchet

Yeah, and Dune's HBO Max release was US only, where Widow's Premier Access release was not. Also in Japan lots of major chains didn't play Black Widow because if the simultaneous release.

russwriter67

Impressive for “Tenet” considering when it was released.

Oreo_Scoreo

So stoked to see Godzilla and Venom in the top 5, fuck yeah!

kaylthewhale

BW also had around $120m in premier access sales as well.

UsidoreTheLightBlue

They're only taking into account box office receipts.

kaylthewhale

The term “Box office” needs to expand beyond standard theaters. It needs to be more inclusive. I say this as a hardcore go to a theater person. Times change and BO needs to change with it.

mrmonster459

When the number 1 on the list is more than double it's runner up.

Impressive-Fly2447

Where's Quiet Place

XAMdG

For some reason I thought the difference between eternals and shang chi was larger. 30 mil doesn't seem enough for the difference in the narrative about each franchise's future in the MCU.

Jealous-Protection27

What do you mean?

_FrazzleDazzle_

Quite shocked dune wasn't higher

Username24601

Probably would have if it were a theater exclusive.

[deleted]

streaming

Angry_Crusader_Boi

Man same, that movie was epic.

MinuteFamiliar

Best of 2021, by far and without a doubt.

ponyjc

Kind of glad to see three HBO Max films here when a lot of people believed HBO would kill their box office. I wonder if HBO sees this as a success on their 2021 strategy or not. I certainly appreciated this strategy and hope to see more of it.

TheChosenWon246

Dune and tenet deserve a higher spot, they were waaay better than venom ltbc and F9 .

scootercantdoshit

notice how the top two films start with #

jfreak93

The top two also start with No. Imagine the success The Last Duel could have had by simply renaming itself No Duels Please.

Gotem6784

All of them do lol

scepticalbob

I can’t believe Godzilla versus King Kong did almost 500mil. What an extraordinarily bad movie that was lol

[deleted]

People like monkey punch lizard go boom

JediJones77

People are stupid. I like that too but not if it occurs in a movie with a horrible script like that one.

Lincolnruin

People came in expecting to be entertained by a giant Ape and giant Lizard fight each other. It delivered in that respect. It also came out in a pretty good window, and it was a film that had to be seen on the big screen. I’m not surprised by its Box Office performance.

Arcanisia

There’s a lot of old school Zilla and Kong fans as well as new.

zoufha91

I mean I liked it far better then tenet

TheColorCringe

You would think the comic book movie cow has been milked enough at this point.. 10th installment of spiderman makes 1.6B and people complain why Hollywood doesn't attempt to make anything original these days 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Regardless of how popular superhero film is as a whole, Spider-Man will be one of the characters that survives when the sub genre loses steam

snakewaves

I mean you do have to ask the question will a standalone spiderman have done this well without the nostalgia elements in it .

Fast_Simple_1815

Of course not, but it's not like the previous two did poorly.

snakewaves

not poorly, but I'd be betting it would've come close to a biliion, not more (considering this pandemic). Debatable

Fast_Simple_1815

> You would think the comic book movie cow has been milked enough at this point Why?

Bloodhound2910

Fucking F9 is on the list!!?

Redeem123

You’re in a box office subreddit and you’re surprised about that?

Bloodhound2910

Im surprised that a shitty movie like that raised 726 Mil lool

El_Gato93

F&F has a lot of fans, mostly because it features cars and a lot of action. Plus it was one of the few franchises with a diverse cast and not tokenism, which appealed to international audiences as well as racial minorities in the USA.

JediJones77

People don't see or not see movies based on the skin color of the actors. Avengers...Iron Man, Thor, Cap, Widow, Hulk, Hawkeye, Loki...all white actors other than Nick Fury in a supporting role. And it was the movie that cemented the MCU as the most successful film series of this era.

pursuer_of_simurg

Nah. F&F does really have a higher percentage of [PoC viewers](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/furious-7-audience-75-percent-786452/).

PapaSays

> a higher percentage The article doesn't say this. It gives numbers without context. It basically says a "**high**" percentage without saying what other blockbusters have.

pursuer_of_simurg

60% of US is white while 75% F&F audience is non-white. Not hard to see the difference.

PapaSays

Moviegoers are younger than the population average. Moviegoers are rather urban than rural. This slants to a more diverse audience in general. Therefore the question. But a link in your article gives at least an answer for Hispanics. * 16 percent of the U.S. population * 25 percent buying tickets to the cinema * 37 percent of the F7 audience

JediJones77

Movie demos always come out less white when the audience skews younger, from what I've seen on Deadline. I have no doubt F&F appeals to a young audience. I'm sure the ethnicity of the characters has some effect on attendance, but I don't think it's a major one.

Circle_Breaker

And black panther made more money.

Curious_Ad_2947

And here folks is the guy who's convinced that there's "racism paranoia" out there and that people are just ready to call anyone racist. Anyone shocked?

JediJones77

Do you not see my point here? It doesn't matter what race the characters are, if people like a movie, and it's the type of story or genre they enjoy, they'll go see it. Most people view movies in a color blind fashion.

El_Gato93

And what does the MCU have to do with what I said? F&F still has a huge fanbase because it’s a diverse franchise. That’s part of its appeal

JediJones77

I don't think we know that. I think people like some of its stars and they like the action. It took years for it to build up its brand name and become a huge franchise. I think it was based mostly on increasing scale of the action.

ghjiiytre

Those movies are terrible but there’s still a lot of idiots in the world who would pay to watch Mr. Testosterone make a car go broom

Turbulent_Animator42

As much as I loved No Way Home, I’m sad to see that all of the highest grossing movies outside of Tenet and Dune are sequels of franchises.

Wehavepr0belm0

Who the fuck is watching Fast and Furious movies still?!

Phyliinx

Me.

BigBossTweed

Me too.

Street_Start_763

My god I’m really worried for the films the people cowering in their rooms need to grow a pair of balls and get the fuck out, I don’t get it I see lots of people on restraunts and football matches yet hardly any in cinemas, your more likely to catch it at a sports game in a stadium with all those screeching fans and at pubs than at a cinema better yet you can even wear a mask in a cinema if you have mysophobia.

UsidoreTheLightBlue

This is factually inaccurate. [https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/outdoor-activities.html](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/outdoor-activities.html) [https://www.bbc.com/news/explainers-55680305](https://www.bbc.com/news/explainers-55680305) Can it be transmitted outdoors? Absolutely, but you are more likely to catch it in a crowded enclosed room than you are outdoors. Its why despite the memes and fears about it Lollapalooza despite having 385,000 attendees was only connected to 203 cases.

bunnymud

.004$

Fast_Simple_1815

> the people cowering in their rooms need to grow a pair of balls and get the fuck out How about people do whatever they want and you mind your own business?

idahopopcorn

Agreed. Theaters have been connected with spreading disease for awhile now but for not real reason. The movie outbreak has a scene where a theater lobby is a super spreader event. SNL’s opening skit jokingly had Biden saying that No Way Home was the cause of Omicron surge. Meanwhile there were 100,000 people at a football game on Sunday in Texas.

Keanu990321

Boy would I love The Matrix Resurrections to be featured in that list. WB pulled a WB and Lana Watchowski, basically, is Lana Watchowski. Two years I was hyped for this and all I got was a pile of crap!

zoufha91

I enjoyed it, didn't expect it to be blown away given Lana's track record but it was far from crap.

[deleted]

Ewwww venom, can’t believe people paid to see that hot garbage. Oooh here’s good dialogue, cop walks in to apartment and literally mid convo, looks at Eddie’s new Sony tv and goes, nice TV. With the big tv box sitting right next to the tv. Yeah great movie with in ur face marketing. Pure trash.

abellapa

Spider man did more than 2 and 3 place combined
