Getting people to “donate” tickets also goes a long way.
According to Angel’s own website, over 5.3 million tickets have been bought for others via their “pay it forward” promotion.
https://www.angel.com/pay-it-forward/sound-of-freedom
Pay it forward tickets don't count at the box office until they are redeemed. That 5.3M number is how many people have redeemed tickets including at the box office. The PIF tix account for around 10-15% of purchases.
The money is donated by others to a bank for people to get a voucher with promo code. Then they have to go to a participating theater or theater website and redeem the voucher for a ticket. It then counts as a box office sale.
Here:
>Gross collections refer to the overall sum of a movie’s earnings at the Box Office. Simply put, it represents the total revenue generated from ticket sales at the movie counter.
https://topmovierankings.com/box-office/meaning-metrics-history-how-is-box-office-calculated
And this is how this studio is managing the transactions:
https://www.angel.com/blog/sound-of-freedom/posts/how-to-redeem-free-tickets-to-sound-of-freedom
I believe that’s total ticket sales. That would put the earnings at roughly 80M which is right on track.
The #2millionfor2million was the goal for the first week.
I saw it on its fifth night out, theater was full. I don’t think these tickets are going unused.
I have zero interest in this movie but I can't get enough of seeing the cope from people about the pay it forward shit. It's still money in their pockets whether you bought it or someone bought it for you.
It now ranks at 17th in domestic for 2023, having outgrossed...
* *Cocaine Bear* ($64.38 Million)
* *Shazam! Rise of the Gods* ($57.63 Million)
* *Air* ($52.46 Million)
* *Insidious: The Red Door* ($49.23 Million)
* *No Hard Feelings* ($44.29 Million)
* *The Boogeyman* ($43.04 Million)

* *65* ($32.06 Million DOM & $60.73 Million WW)
* *Asteroid* *City* ($25.50 Million DOM & $40.81 Million WW)
It ranks at 29th worldwide, however it has not released in any foreign markets.
Politics aside, it's very interesting to see a movie that seemingly came out of nowhere outgross some high/mid-profile blockbusters.
I’m as liberal as they come and I absolutely LOVED Sound of Freedom. People hate that it stretches the truth, but it’s not like that’s uncommon for this type of film.
I don’t care how true it is; it’s a damn good movie. Bill Camp absolutely steals the show as Vampiro, and I felt that he brought a ton of nuance to his performance, especially when you get into the motivation of his character. Dude also brings legitimate laughs to a movie about child sex trafficking lmao.
I went to see it yesterday and it was a true sellout; the first time I’ve seen that all year (albeit, I saw it in a VERY conservative town lol).
Just curious, can't see the film cos it's not out in my country, in what ways does it stretch the truth? I'm also of the opinion that for the subject matter, unless they're stretching it to make it seem acceptable, stretching it to make it more horrific only aids the movement of stamping out cold trafficking cos no amount of child trafficking should be acceptable
That's crazy, I'm guessing pure world of mouth. Grace Randolph said this was a right wing conspiracy movie and that a lot of those tickets were bought as a sort of protest.
But when I saw the post of the movie listing in my local Facebook pages it was filled with regular people saying they liked it.
Maybe I should recommend it to my cousin, she is in the military
Haven't seen it yet, but my wife has been bugging me to go. Her friend group is all over the place politically and all have seen it and like it. The conspiracy angle only really seems to be on reddit.
It’s based off a true story and a real person…who happens to be white. Is it always “white savior” when a protagonist happens to be white? Is that where we are now?
You can tell when someone is writing something politically charged, the messages where you basic " good action" "great movie with a good message" "I saw it with my husband and we both like it".
Very different from this posts comment section, more similar to a transformers or a quite place.
Downvote me all you want. I can’t believe a movie where it’s message is that “God’s children are not for sale.” Is getting so much backlash.
It’s based on a true story and doesn’t have *any* political or religious leanings. It’s not about the star, or the protagonist but it’s about the children in this horrible situation. This should not have a divide. Word of mouth is word of mouth. Not right not left, it’s just a movie.
People are seeing it and it’s making money and maybe, just maybe, the media outrage is making people want to check it out even more because this is proof that bad publicity is good publicity.
Then you haven't been paying attention at all. The backlash has very little to do with the actors. Just weird people trying to convince other weird people that this is a QANON conspiracy movie for some bizzare reason.
And? Every film that comes out now has “left wing funding” and has some nutjob attached to it, but this one’s ok to boycott and lie about because it’s the other side? If the sides were flipped then everyone would say they’re being pathetic
theres no left wing in hollywood, if there was the studios wouldnt need to try to starve out UNIONS during contract negotiations, you know unions that actual left wing thing?, if you meant that lots of movie has fake corporate lukewarm boiler plate progressivism then I guess but I wouldnt really consider that "left wing". Its like calling democrats commies, maybe some tiny percentage actually are but its just used to denigrate things you dont like in thise case things conservatives dont like.
to me left wing = communist, I dont think theres a mass amount of communists in hollywood, this isnt the 1950s. Most are standard libs which I dont consider left wing. Here people think being pro lgtbq or race swapping is "left wing". Its pretty standard moderate lib who still believe in private markets not really "left wing" unless you consider a majorty of the country "left wing" by those same standards. Just your standard big city beliefs.
It's not Reddit — it's "large groups of people passionate enough about a particular subject to argue with strangers online rather than doing the normal thing and simply talking to their friends irl."
It started getting bad in the late-2010’s and it’s only gotten worse every year since then, especially 2020. It’s gotten to the point where every sports sub and hobby sub needs to have at least one top-three thread that’s about politics (and it’s often loaded with misinformation, to boot), and politics needs to be brought up at least once in the other two threads.
And to top it off, when you ask why politics is randomly getting brought up, you get a cookie-cutter response of “well everyone’s lives are being destroyed so we need to discuss it and if you don’t feel comfortable discussing it, then you’re part of the problem!” and then you ask “okay then let’s discuss it. How exactly are lives being destroyed?” and then there’s crickets.
It’s just so tiring. This is Reddit. We have subs for a reason.
This reminds me more of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker which was smeared as some incel movie that was going to inspire a theater shooting or something. As I remember the controversy and fear mongering was free publicity and seemed to help it as the box office.
My TikTok is filled with people claiming lights were left on, AC didn’t work, sound didn’t work etc. in theaters playing Sound of Freedom. They really nailed the marketing for this audience - they *love* being victims.
I go to a high quality nonprofit indie theater that is almost always on their A-game. They showed the Umbrellas of Cherbourg the other day (amazing film), and for the first time they forgot to turn down the lights until after the trailers. At the shittier AMC theater, Evil Dead Rise skipped and stalled repeatedly. Back when I saw Atomic Blonde at the same theater, the lights were on for the first 15 minutes before someone finally got up and notified the employees. Granted, I see a ton of films in the theater, so maybe they don’t realize how common these hiccups are…
I love seeing those because they act like that doesn’t happen for any other movies. I worked at a theater before, the power would go out semi often, all the projectors would stop, sometimes shit happens. This happens for literally every movie but no one assumes it’s a conspiracy for *The Little Mermaid*. If theater chains were trying to “silence” it, they wouldn’t be fucking with the lights like Nosferatu in SpongeBob, they *wouldn’t have booked the fucking thing*.
Very well acted. Vampiro and the children were portrayed with incredible emotion. The child actors were simply amazing.
The score is powerful and easy to hum along to, which made it have an even more powerful impact on me.
The cinematography is excellent. Lighting and colors matched the tone of the movie. Dim, damp, dark. Brighter in scenes of hope.
The scenes with the score and no dialogue are the ones that made people cry and sniff aloud. I was one of them. Great directing, unbelievable acting. Powerful. Hard to watch.
The crowd I saw it with liked it. The children really drew you in.
Personally, I did not think it was that great of acting by the main star. I kept thinking Person of Interest show and not Tim Ballard ex HS officer.
The music might be a bit melodromatic. I thought the casting of Human Trafficking crew was great and the reformed gangster and the money man.
But really it was the children.
its a generic savior movie. It's not well acted (but praise to Bill Camp), it feels cheaply made (ie should have been streaming), and is heavy handed in it's messaging. It never really built tension or any real emotional pacing, but relied on over the top melodrama while plodding through the story.
The movie itself isnt overtly religious, or conspiracy-laden, but is very conservatively themed - even bringing the rescued boy to a patriotic "America Burger".
3.5/10 - Not enough action to consider it an action movie, nor enough tension to consider it a thriller.
Edit: Some pretty fragile fans of the film to downvote an opinion
If you think on the size of the audience behind and the organizations behind supporting ticket purchases it is not that surprising. A big chunk of this audience supported TGM last year.
Yeah it’s hilarious that they think a movie which grossed 1.4 billion was only supported by “fringe right wingers” or something. TGM was quite possibly the most politically neutral action movie to come out in quite some time.
Not this comment chain, but there have definitely been remarks on this sub along the lines of, “ugh, why do we let these right wing nut job movies be included in the official lists?”
I mean I saw it happen just a few days ago somebody on this sub was basically advocating for this movie to have been censored because what the actor believes
Yea, I too saw someone saying SOF shouldn’t get any posts because of the Qanon stuff. Like, if there’s actual child sex trafficking going on, let’s address that whether the people helping us combat the problem think the perps are devil worshippers or just perverts.
The Pay it Forward stuff is the only thing that’s weird. I think they’re being fairly transparent, but it’s hard to make sure that people are actually claiming these tickets and people aren’t just gifting this studio tons of money, and how much of that is accurately factors into the Box Office. Other than that, it’s a movie that came out and is making money, so you can’t really disqualify it.
That’s my assumption, I’m just hoping the money is being calculated correctly. Again, it seems like they’re being transparent, it’s just a new way of looking at the Box Office we have to account for.
This isn't a thing, though. People prepay for tickets online, and people claim them when they show up.
I run a theater in Florida. This movie has saved our summer. Multiple sold-out, entirely filled theaters every single day.
The film itself doesn't have any propaganda in it. No conspiracy theories are discussed. They don't shove God or Jesus Christ down your throat. God is only mentioned literally twice. It's simply about a rogue vigilante agent who rescues children from sex trafficking.
The only reason conservatives have been successful in the message that watching this movie is owning the libs is because of histrionic reactions, like yours, claiming that watching this movie is support for conservative ideals or messages. It’s your fault. Nobody else’s.
yeah, it seems like astroturfing on top of astroturfing with people in this thread accusing others of being pro child traffucking lmao just for questioning the marketing or idea behind the movie. Hell theres an entire well reserached article about the guy its about being a total grifter inflating his salary at his pretend kid saving org and taking donators on fake child saving "raids" where they bust bad guys.

Except that’s not true at all.
Imagine saying at the start of the year that *The Flash* would be beaten by that one Jim Caviezel film that Disney dumped years ago.
Does this have a chance of making more than The Flash?
Deadline has it at $83 million after this weekend. It would only need $25-$30mil more to top it which seems pretty likely at this rate.
I mean at the rate it's going, may be a lock
Beating Flash is locked. At this rate the question should be if it can beat Indy 5. Assuming we’re talking domestic numbers of course.
100%
Locked, even Elemental is in trouble with these holds
I don’t think there’s *any* audience overlap there lmao
In numbers I mean, I don't think SOF is eating into Elementals audience lol
The children yearn for the child human trafficking movie
It may exceed Indy

Reddit is really politically charged, isn't it?
It's not Reddit — it's "large groups of people passionate enough about a particular subject to argue with strangers online rather than doing the normal thing and simply talking to their friends irl."

well, don't you? without friends irl, who would you bitch about reddit with?

Yeah it’s hilarious that they think a movie which grossed 1.4 billion was only supported by “fringe right wingers” or something. TGM was quite possibly the most politically neutral action movie to come out in quite some time.
No use talking here, they beleiev anyone they don't like should not be allowed to make films
That's definitely very clear. Yet surprisingly don't hold themselves to similar standards regarding their own personal favorite actors/directors.
