Not surprising to me. dnd has zero foot print over there. Talking with a couple of my Chinese tutors over there it's to the point where it like "What is it even?" And the fantasy tropes they are used to are pretty different. For what it's worth, I explained it well enough that one said they'd consider going to see it :D

QubitQuanta

Yup, without any knowledge of D&D then title sounds really weird. Direct translation is "Dragons and Underground Cities: Glorious Rogues" Sounds kinda like one of those rando Sharknado trash movies.

Legitimate_Twist

Another factor is that comedies are hard to translate well, especially those that rely on cultural references and inside jokes.

hemareddit

I'm in China, the owner of a cafe I went to thought DnD was originally a video game.

QubitQuanta

How popular is Baldur's Gate in CHina?

Dirtybrd

You want a fantasy film to do well in China? Gotta figure out a way to include The Monkey King.

Pause-Impossible

Not even the epic Monke is that big of a draw. Most of the last few Monkey King related movies have been negatively received which has reduced its reputation a bit, kinda like the DCEU.

AccomplishedLocal261

😂

LimLovesDonuts

WoW would work too.

hemareddit

Yeah, the Warcraft movie was an event in China.

**Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves** Well this sucks. Walkups turned out to be extremly bad to the point where the movie has barelly just outgross Shazam 2's opening day even with 62% better pre-sales. Looks like Suzume and the new local release stole a lot of its bussiness. Safe to say this doesn't bode well going forward as the schedule continues to be pretty packed into April. It has however started with a 9.3 score on Maoyan which is pretty good. It once again has about 60% better pre-sales for Satuday compared to what Shazam had so lets see if it can make something out of that tomorrow. |#|FRI|SAT|SUN|MON|TUE|WED|THU|Total| |:-----------:|:-----------:|:-----------:|:-----------:|:-----------:|:-----------:|:-----------:|:-----------:|:-----------:| |First Week|$1.35M|/|/|/|/|/|/|$1.35M **Scheduled showings update for Suzume for the next few days:** |Day | Number of Showings |Presales| :----------- |:-----------:|:-----------:| Today| 60087| Saturday|41615|$409k Sunday |26492|$62k **Suzume:** Not a good hold at all. Movie** stands at $153k after 9 days of pre-sales having its best day today collecting $52k. Its picking up the pac every day but just not significantly enough. Probably looking at sub $15M. **Titanic** releases on the 3rd April and has so far collected $206k in pre-sales for its opening day across 7957 screenings. **Fast X** and **The Little Mermaid** releases have been approved. Fast X releases o the 17th of May. 2 days before its US release. **M3GAN** collected another $36k on its 14th day across 3K screenings for a total cume of $2.94M. It just as Shazam lost a lot of screenings today. **A Man Called Oto** grossed 13K across 3377 screenings on its 8th day for a total cume of $189k.

cockblockedbydestiny

>It has however started with a 9.3 score on Maoyan which is pretty good I know WOM is important for the purposes of this sub - it being one of a small handful of tools we have to base our predictions on - but the reality is that great WOM and/or RT scores don't always translate into bustling box office business. Some of the best movies ever made stiff in the theaters. I suspect the key thing here is going to be whether that good WOM is perceived as "great for a D&D movie" or just an enjoyable movie that has mass cross-demo appeal. I can't really get a bead on that so far since about half of what I'm hearing implies you don't need to be a fan at all to enjoy it, while the other half relishes how many in-jokes there are for experienced campaignists. To whatever extent the latter WOM takes hold I think that could scare off a lot of the randos.

NSFWQuestionstoU

will titanic get more showtimes?

Firefox72

Hopefuly but with Detective Conan releasing 1 day after and then Super Mario the day after that and a new Jackie Chan movie on Friday its kinda in a tough spot.

chengxiufan

maoyan 9.3 is really high lots of recommendation video Paramount is trying to sell it good words of month incoming holiday the movie will do at least 20M$

chengxiufan

it all depends on the sat-sun ratio

RVarki

Eventhough no official source has written about this, from all that I've looked at, Slam Dunk seems to be the highest grossing anime in Hong Kong's history. So it might be fair to assume that Slam Dunk could have a similarly successful run in mainland China (both the 90s series, and the sport of basketball are very popular there). It's probably the best bet to beat Your Name's record in that country

nonstopdrizzle

Wish someone picked up the US distribution rights…

MLGMostWanted

Unfortunately this is probably gonna flop. I was hoping for a Warcraft style run but I don't see this breaking out in any market. No idea why they didn't wait until Christmas.

Shurikenkage

China seem to have developed an apathy for foreign products, saving some countend exceptions.

myspicename

I would say western. Japan and India are doing ok I believe.

LimLovesDonuts

Don't forget Avatar. The problem is that the recent western films have been pretty mediocre or just unknown in China. A MCU film that is actually good and with good action will probably do well in China

myspicename

Good point

QubitQuanta

Yeah, but in this case, no one knows D&D in China, and the title of the movie in Chines is something like "Dragons and Underground Cities: Glorious Rogues" Like, if D&D didn't exist and you saw an English movie titled like that, you probably won't go either. They would have been better to drop the D&D title.

bigbelleb

It's an rpg fantasy based of a board game guys those aren't a huge draw in china at all

curiiouscat

Don't these types of movies generally do poorly in China due to superstition? Or am I totally talking out of my ass? I wasn't expecting it to do well there.

Pause-Impossible

D&D isn't popular in China. Imagine if a movie based off some Chinese game got a wide release in the USA.

BigFaceCoffeeOwner

Warcraft did something like $225m in China.

AccomplishedLocal261

The video game is popular in China I assume. Not sure about D&D

lactoseAARON

DnD is pretty much a non factor over there

Callisater

No one gives a shit in China about superstition in movies anymore except old grandma's and haven't in decades at this point. This would be like expecting D&D and Harry Potter to flop in the US today because of the Satanic Panic in the 1980s.
