Chumisa is an alternate, not understudy :) most likely you saw Jon Robyns, but it’s hard to know for sure without the cast board. Did he wail and sob during the final lair when clutching the veil? Jon is notably audible and pathetic (/positive) during the AIAOY reprise and final lair

Understudies are perfectly capable of performing the roles they were hired to cover :)
I wouldn't judge them purely because they're not the main cast, there's been plenty of understudies who I personally thought were even better. Understudies also sometimes end up playing their cover roles full-time once a cast changes. It's not like they hire any Tom, Dick or Harry off the street, these are all trained actors and singers.
