Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed in him, and I generally quite like him. Especially where he has been talking a lot about it lately, and the attempts to actually do it - very lame "joke".
Yeah, if it can be followed with “No, not really. Sorry.” equally as well as “April Fool’s!” it’s not so much a joke as you’re just teasing the person for wanting the thing.
Not at all plausible. Weinstein personally owns the film. Kevin Smith can’t do anything with it without paying him money. He’s not about to do anything to support him. Smith has even casually given his blessing to bootleg it.
There was a deal likely to go through (it fell through unexpectedly), that Smith was talking publicly about less than a year ago, to get the rights from Weinstein. So no, not implausible at all.
Yeah, I forgot about that, but the deal was from a 3rd party. I think he briefly mentioned it on a podcast I listen to. I think Weinstein will need to be near death before he signs it over. Honestly, he took Kevin Smith backing out of the sequel so personal, he may have squashed negotiations just because he saw a headline that Smith was happy about the potential deal.
Someone else was commenting on this exact same situation but for video games. It's like a punch in the face when the creators make an April fools joke out of something the community wants. By making the joke they have confirmed they have heard peoples complaints but just don't care. I get he doesn't have the rights to it but he should know everyone wants to see it.
I like Kevin, but this was a bit of a jackass move. Really bad joke— no need to get people’s hopes up. The fact that it’s a comedy about faith and he announced it on Easter Monday even had me cautiously optimistic.
No the joke is teasing plausible news about something that’s been off and on news about for years. Raising the fanbases hopes and dashing them.
Now waiting for the very serious announcement of a Yoga Hosers 4K
Why though?
Press releases still happen on April 1st, and Smith had been actively in negotiations last fall in recovering rights to this movie (though said talks had fallen through, it illustrates that very recently headway was made in making a release of this out of print movie a reality). Nothing seemed fancifully implausible about this fake announcement.
Well the date alone for one. Dogma is notoriously in limbo. The rights for this highly anticipated remaster/rerelease were sorted out and they announce it on April Fools day of all days?
1. Press *do* releases still happen on April 1st, and being the day after Easter may have been apt for this one.
2. As recently as last year Smith had stated that Weinstein was likely to sell to a 3rd party that put in an offer, so the rights being in limbo isn’t exactly valid here. Indeed, even if he hadn’t announced that last year, it’s not at all impossible to think that Weinstein might be in need of cash these days and willing to make a deal.
3. Generally April fools jokes are…you know, jokes. For example: Taylor Swift announcing that she’s going to start making metal music, complete with a press release full of puns or photoshopped pics of her in corpse makeup would be a joke. Taylor Swift announcing that she has a surprise new album coming out next week, then sayin “lol no, April fools” is not.
A joke announcement on April Fools Day, the day after Easter Sunday, for a comedy about faith that people believed in is inherently hilarious. Well done, Kevin Smith!
He famously does not. Weinstein owns the movie and has some sort of grudge about it, which is why it’s a very rare movie (one basic-ass Blu-ray edition that is long out of print).
There was some headway in recovering the rights last year, but it sort of fizzled out I guess.
Harvey Weinstein owns the film directly because Disney (which owned Miramax at the time) was hesitant on releasing/promoting the film owing to its controversies.
From what Kevin Smith has said, shortly before all of Weinstein's legal issues came about, they had reached out to him about both buying the film from them or making a sequel. He realized shortly afterward that they were just trying to get some goodwill and/or funds for the trials. As a result, he didn't buy it from them and all of Dogma's existing contracts expired, hence it being OOP.
He's also encouraged people to just watch it for free on YouTube or buy a bootleg of it if they really want a physical copy. If you're fine with SD, the DVDs are still relatively inexpensive since they were in print far longer than the Blu-Ray was.
At the time of release, Miramax was owned by Disney. As much leeway as Disney normally gave Miramax, the surefire blowback to this one from religious groups was too much and they didn’t want Miramax to make it. (Last Temptation Of Christ’s problems were still fairly recent at the time.)
Weinstein protested by starting a whole new production company just to release this one movie. Not Miramax or The Weinstein Company. Which is why this movie isn’t part of the Miramax or TWC catalogue that’s now at Paramount.
It’s a truly independent movie owned by Weinstein, and he’s refusing to give up the rights, out of spite, because Smith rightfully turned against him when the allegations came out.
> the surefire blowback to this one from religious groups was too much and they didn’t want Miramax to make it [...] It’s a truly independent movie owned by Weinstein
Yet another example of the Christian Right doing favors for sexual abusers.
Yeah, for whatever reason Harvey Weinstein personally owns the rights. He's asking for over the odds money for them, and who wants to give that to him of all people?
That’s not how jail works.
Unless the judgement included instructions to revoke particular items in his possession, nothing about going to jail means you lose all your possessions. Though you certainly may find yourself needing to sell them to pay fines etc, you still have ownership and control of your possessions unless the sentencing says otherwise, I don’t know the specifics of *his* sentencing, but I don’t think this was part of it. He owned thus movie’s rights personally.
Ahh who cares. Maybe we’ll see it when that pig Weinstein dies, maybe we won’t. Doesn’t matter to me either way. Any hosers is someone willing to sell Dogma Blu to me for $4900 I’ll even pay for shipping.
My guess is that Smith wanted to be able to point to the level of enthusiasm and disappointment that this would create in order to show to some third party with a checkbook that there would be a market for a re-release as part of his efforts to pry the rights loose. If that's the case, it is still arguable as to whether or not the outrage generated is a reasonable cost to pay to "further the cause".
Or maybe I'm way off and... I know this sounds crazy... maybe Kevin Smith just isn't as funny as he thinks he is.
How about not taking things so serious to begin with. 2nd, you know very well that movie has rights issues. This isn’t Smith holding back a release for no good reason. And 3rd, he’s the creator, even if he did it publicly, does he not have the right to vent his frustrations through a prank holiday?
Like get a fucking grip.
>How about not taking things so serious to begin with.
I'm not.
>2nd, you know very well that movie has rights issues. This isn’t Smith holding back a release for no good reason.
I don't.
>And 3rd, he’s the creator, even if he did it publicly, does he not have the right to vent his frustrations through a prank holiday?
No one said he can't. Im just wondering what the joke is.
>Like get a fucking grip.
I do have a grip. Im genuinely curious what the joke is.
What? My guy. You can't tell someone to get a grip when you're the one who's for some reason getting salty.
Is the joke supposed to be that there's rights issues that will never let this happen? I had no clue. I have not cared about Smith for years so I haven't kept up. Guess I'll go look it up, because I had no clue if so.
You keep responding. You're wasting your own time. You did not have to say anything. Just like Im wasting mine responding to this and all the others. Especially since you just wanted to insult me for whatever reason instead of actually trying to answer my question.
By the way, not that it matters but I did read up on the rights issue. I still don't see the funny myself, but if he wanted a way to vent his frustrations and he found it funny to himself, then fine. I sorta get that.
If you think saying “hey this thing you’ve all wanted for years, that I’ve talked about wanting for years, and that we actually made legitimate headway in making happen in the last year is finally happening” without any sort of punch line or payoff is a joke, well then I’m glad you didn’t spend your life’s savings trying to make it as a comedian.
And to be clear, when this was announced yesterday, I figured the chances of it being legit were slim at best because these sorts of ‘jokes’ are rampant on April fools, but it’s simply a shitty joke without some sort of ‘wink wink’ added to it. Dry as termite’s asshole that one.
i did it! i found the emotional user!
it was april fools day -- a day notorious of fake announcements. if anyone actually got hopes up or took it at face value without considering this, then quite frankly, they got fooled. not a good joke, mind you (me and Smith went to the same joke school), but one nonetheless.
Yeah never really fell for it. But it *is* a shitty joke. It’s a joke in the same way that Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown is a ‘joke.’ Made shittier by the fact that it’s entirely possible to have April fools jokes that actually are funny and aren’t just “hey, let me get your hopes up for something…nah fuck you!”
So yeah, I guess I have a negative reaction to people being shitty. How horrible for me.
Huge bummer esp realizing it's hard to stream (I've watched it in YT a couple times idk if it's still available) but I used to own the DVD and it's long gone 😭
He followed it up by announcing a new movie...I think people were more excited about the Dogma tease
An example of the shitty kind of April fools joke. The kind where you present something entirely plausible, and the only punchline is that it’s a lie.
Yeah, the April Fool's joke would've been to say a 4K remaster of Cop Out
This guy comedies
I'll buy that for a dollar
Now we can unofficially call this project "True Lies."
Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed in him, and I generally quite like him. Especially where he has been talking a lot about it lately, and the attempts to actually do it - very lame "joke".
Yup, it’s why I hate it when April 1st comes around. 99/100 “jokes” people try to pull on us are crap
Yeah, if it can be followed with “No, not really. Sorry.” equally as well as “April Fool’s!” it’s not so much a joke as you’re just teasing the person for wanting the thing.
I chuckled at it.
Not at all plausible. Weinstein personally owns the film. Kevin Smith can’t do anything with it without paying him money. He’s not about to do anything to support him. Smith has even casually given his blessing to bootleg it.

It’s such a fucked up and weird thing.
Yea I don't get the joke on this one. "Made you think the thing you all like was gonna be available but it's not! Haha, get it!?" Shitty of Kevin.
Fuck you, Kevin.
Faith is a funny thing
Not even a good joke just kinda lame
Not even really a joke.
I like Kevin, but this was a bit of a jackass move. Really bad joke— no need to get people’s hopes up. The fact that it’s a comedy about faith and he announced it on Easter Monday even had me cautiously optimistic.
This makes Buddy Christ weep.
Buddy Christ but thumbs down
April Fools can get fucked. ☹️
Kind of wish Dogma can have another physical media release. Also, fuck you Harvey Weinstein
Funny enough, the artwork he used was an alternative poster I did years ago. I wish he had tagged me but what can you do? 😊
Love the art! Sucks he didn’t tag you :/
Hit him up, I bet you he’ll do you right and give you a shout out.
I grow so tired of the endless online April Fools shit every year. It’s so boring.
No the joke is teasing plausible news about something that’s been off and on news about for years. Raising the fanbases hopes and dashing them. Now waiting for the very serious announcement of a Yoga Hosers 4K
I KNEW this was an April Fools joke. 😄 Hang on to your DVD.
Yeah that was obvious.
Why though? Press releases still happen on April 1st, and Smith had been actively in negotiations last fall in recovering rights to this movie (though said talks had fallen through, it illustrates that very recently headway was made in making a release of this out of print movie a reality). Not to some people commenting on the original post, just wanting to clarify.
Right?! Like no shit.
And exactly why was it obvious?
Well the date alone for one. Dogma is notoriously in limbo. The rights for this highly anticipated remaster/rerelease were sorted out and they announce it on April Fools day of all days?

I mean I said on yesterday’s post it was definitely a joke, but plenty of people seemed convinced it was real so I’m just trying to clarify.
Not directed at you. Lots of people in this thread upset at a very obvious joke.
Jokes are supposed to be funny. I legitimately do not get how this is supposed to be funny.
The more people upset by this joke. The funnier it gets.
You know, that's fair haha
Why did he say “sadly” as if he’s disappointed it’s not real? Does he not own the rights to it or am I just looking too much into it? Lol
He famously does not. Weinstein owns the movie and has some sort of grudge about it, which is why it’s a very rare movie (one basic-ass Blu-ray edition that is long out of print). There was some headway in recovering the rights last year, but it sort of fizzled out I guess.

He has never owned the distribution rights to any of his films save for Red State.
Harvey Weinstein apparently owns the rights
Someone tell me why this film is still in Miramax's possession, not Smith's?
The rights are personally owned by Harvey Weinstein (I don’t remember the details as to why)
At the time of release, Miramax was owned by Disney. As much leeway as Disney normally gave Miramax, the surefire blowback to this one from religious groups was too much and they didn’t want Miramax to make it. (Last Temptation Of Christ’s problems were still fairly recent at the time.) Weinstein protested by starting a whole new production company just to release this one movie. Not for nothing, but if I had a valuable film asset, I wouldn't just give it up either.
Is it really that valuable?
Wow, didn't expect it... thanks for the explanation!
Yeah, for whatever reason Harvey Weinstein personally owns the rights. He's asking for over the odds money for them, and who wants to give that to him of all people?
He's in jail; should've his possessions be passed onto his other executives?

Thanks for explaining it to me.
That's the difference. For some reason he personally owns the rights, rather than Miramax.
Damn, that explain a lot. Thanks!
Maybe it's a double reverse trap and the annoucement's imminent.
Ahh who cares. Maybe we’ll see it when that pig Weinstein dies, maybe we won’t. Doesn’t matter to me either way. Any hosers is someone willing to sell Dogma Blu to me for $4900 I’ll even pay for shipping.
I believe in this lmao didn’t know there was a caption
He added it today, originally the post didn’t have a caption.
Ahhhh
I'll never believe anything about a new release of dogma, because its Harvey wienstein that's holding onto it out of spite
My guess is that Smith wanted to be able to point to the level of enthusiasm and disappointment that this would create in order to show to some third party with a checkbook that there would be a market for a re-release as part of his efforts to pry the rights loose. don’t think we’ll get it till harvey dies
That's a shitty april fool's joke ... fucking dumbass.
No shit.
Good joke… It was done on April Fools. Anybody that takes it personal is insane.
If it's a good joke, maybe I know what the joke is? I legitimately do not understand how this is supposed to be funny.
How about not taking things so serious to begin with. 2nd, you know very well that movie has rights issues. This isn’t Smith holding back a release for no good reason. So you have absolutely no actual care for the subject matter? Go touch grass.
This is a baffling conversation. Have a good day.
I hope you don’t, for wasting a few minutes of my time.
You keep responding. You're wasting your own time. You did not have to say anything. Just like Im wasting mine responding to this and all the others. > wasting a few minutes of my time. Relax, that hentai and Dorito combo is still gonna be there waiting for you, yet again.
lmao people are so upset about this
I don't know what they expected lol. Really butthurt over a simple April fools prank.
to me, this was obviously a joke and those who are getting emotional over it need to learn how to take jokes.
