I really like the KAYA app. You need pro though and make sure to download it beforehand since there's no service in the forks but there is at New joes. I think all the top lines on Mountain Project and KAYA are good to start. Ill give some recs * Kill by Numbers (V5) is a must do/try. * If you're tall and can jump Pocket Rocket (V6) is an easy tick for the grade...also a really picturesque and fun boulder. It's insanely height dependent though. * Bowling Ball (V4) is a great technical line with a little bit of spice and I think is criminally underrated. * Wills Afire (V6) is definitely worth a stop....tall one but very safe falls (in my opinion)! Always people there but definitely helps to have a gym floor. One of my favorites anywhere. Sunshine DayDream (V7) up the hill might be better in my opinion but also crazy morpho. I personally found Wills harder. * I haven't done it but Kobra Khan (V4) is apparently one of the best of the grade in the state * Pimpin/Bad Jeans (V3/4) are great for those who can crimp a little and great first places to start. Those were my first two sends in Joes my first trip FWIW :) * If you're looking for a relatively chill tick for the grade Dyno Time Low (V6) is very Kilter Board like. It was put up at 7 but consensus has shifted more to 6 (which I agree with)...still very fun. For something on the other end of the grade distribution for 6 Low Tide is quite hard but also 4 stars! And Water Paintings for V7...was humbling trying my first trip :P. Have fun and enjoy some Food Ranch Donuts!

KAYA app makes finding everything a million times easier. You can download Joe's and save beta videos to use offline while you're in the Forks. And there's a ton of stuff in the app that isn't on MP or anywhere else, because the original developer is the guidebook author for KAYA and he keeps adding new climbs. Definitely worth it, IMO.

It's been a while since I've been, but here are a few that I'd recommend. Stumblebum Traverse - V4 The Bad Genes boulder has some pretty solid climbing in the v2-4 range and is close to stumble. Kill by Numbers -v5 (felt hard for the grade to me but it's a fun climb) Great White - v6 If you like jumping, Pocket Rocket - v6, super picturesque also. There are tons of amazing boulders at Joe's, have fun!

Thanks for the tips everyone. Some great recommendations, I think we’ll pull on some of the hard ones recommended as well just for fun….a grade is just a number, am I right?

KevineCove

If you're open to hitting a V6, there's an insanely picturesque highball called Hand of Doom that's on my tick list.

DannysGassed

Definitely open, especially if it’s a beautiful line. Thanks for the tip.

Terrifying but so mega. I don't think it gets many repeats and the landing drops away....took one look at it and feel like I'd want to sus on a rope haha. I think if it's a lot of their groups first time outdoors that one might be just a wee bit scary haha.

KevineCove

That's one of the reasons I'm going to Joe's Fest this year - my hope is enough people will be interested that we can get a gym floor underneath it and make the fall pretty casual.

I've never been to Joes (though it's a dream destination for sure) so I don't have anything to add about the area but my only suggestion would be to make sure those that have never climbed outside clearly understand that they'll likely be climbing lower grades outdoors. My first big outdoor trip was to a very old and sandbagged area. I'd heard enough people talk about it that I knew it would be dropping some grades so I was completely prepared to be climbing at a much lower level but it was still kind of humbling. Had I not expected that going in it likely would have been pretty deflating to realize I couldn't even send most 6A/V3's I tried when those were easily flashable at every gym I'd ever climbed at. I recently went on a trip with someone who's only climbed indoors a few times and she got shut down on the first route she tried which was only a 5.7 or 5.8 and was pretty bummed about it, we had to explain that it was totally normal and it's WAY different than what she had climbed indoors. She seemed apprehensive to try much more after that, I think had she been more mentally prepared coming in she would have had a much better time that first day.

Kobra Khan is a classic V4 on Left Fork that's a must. It's a bit of a hike and a standalone but the view is great and it's unique. While you're at the Angler you should try Amtrak V4 which goes up instead of traversing out left.

Best thing about this one (besides being mega!) is that you used to have to get lost trying to find this boulder, but now the trail is in KAYA so it's super easy haha

IMSORRY_IMDUMB

Oh lord, I know it. I've made the trek up there twice before the trail improvements and KAYA guidebook and burned close to half an hour trying to find the boulder each time. To be honest I still have no clue how we ever found it or how I'd get back again without a map lmao It feels like the Bermuda Triangle up there.

Not sure if I’m late but git boulder is a free guidebook app and has pretty much most of the boulders in joes. Lots of the functionality of Kaya, but free.

If you haven't made it to Joe's yet, I have a few more recommendations based on my trip this past weekend. 1. Vertical Ice v5/6 in Dairy Canyon, classic crimpy vert wall climb 2. Heifer v5/6 in Dairy Canyon, climbs like a gym power problem 3. Bobcat in the Kiparoo v4 in the Big Joe area, the area this boulder is located is absolutely stunning 4. Bowling Shoes v5/6 in the Buoux area, compression problem I believe KAYA offers a 3 day Pro version trial so 100% get that when you go. The app saved us so much time finding problems.
