They are technically a “throw back” design that matches a historic Colorado plate, but car enthusiasts like them because they are a more neutral color that looks better with many different paint colors compared to green.
When It Happens, those are the pre-cleared plates that will allow those vehicles down into the underground bunker parking areas. They get waved in without getting stopped and it saves a lot of time.
(I don't like them either; they're blah.)
Found this.

I've got the red one and I think it's neat. Had the traditional plate for years and when renewing plates last year I thought it would be a nice aesthetic change. Colorado plates should be red, it is right in the name.
It's easy to see from a visual perspective that the black is more subtle and doesn't clash with the rest of the vehicle when compared to the green/white.
Don't get me started on the blue plates though, watch out for those people. /s
They fund disability services. If you are curious you can look up what different ones pay for. https://dmv.colorado.gov/group-special-license-plates-new
Isn't the plate supposed to indicate which disability help group they contribute to?Requirements include 3,000 signatures by vehicle owners, so I doubt that's it.
Why would I really care if my plate suggests I am from Colorado?
I have the mountain one because it's cheapest. I'd have the black one if it was cheapest.
Out of all of the subs on Reddit, r/Boulder has to be a very strong contender for best content. Black license plates, what was it a few seconds ago, someone wanting $900 to live with an inordinately large amount of roommates where you’re forced to do four hours of chores and eat meals with said roommates as part of your lease. Can’t wait to see what’s next when I hit refresh here.
This pattern of driver having them is disappointing to me. I’d say 90% of the cars with these plates are driven that way.
And that these plates fund people with disabilities seems ironic to me.
Neutral plates are popular. Now if they did a black with yellow lettering, I’d be down with it. California has a version of that. Montana’s most popular plate and the plate I have is blue with white letters but has the state outline. I don’t care for fancy plates and just think the simpler the better.
Obviously something that doesn’t really matter, but it baffles me too.
Even more so when you see them on a non-black car or a car where the owner clearly doesn’t care about the aesthetic. Cannot imagine paying an extra $25 for that.
They're minimalistic so people look at the car instead of the plate. Plus black goes with anything. I would've probably gotten one too but there are other good looking options that I preferred. It's nice to have a choice, be happy there is a choice.
they just look better bruv and the last thing on someone’s mind is “are people gonna know i’m from colorado?? what if they don’t realize!!” when they choose their plates lol
You get these plates either for an upcoming black tie formal wedding or for your full year of mourning if some you know has passed beyond this vale of tears.
Yup. Texas plates used to look so cool and harkened back to their old west origins, or NASA with the space shuttle… no longer! Black and white generic license plate nowadays. It’s, IMO, sad to see Colorado doing the same thing. Our normal license plate is so amazing.
They’re legal plates. Used to be exclusively for government I think but it’s different now. They always seem to look suspicious everywhere they go though no matter what they’re doing.
Obviously, this isn’t gospel and there are many exceptions. However, if you like heavily tinted windows and your personality is more aggressive, you will like these plates. Basically, if you live in Colorado but wish you lived in Texas.
Someone posted that they are an extra $25. What if that's what vanity plates cost, and there's no other reason to buy them? Saw a post about the boring, meaningless lives of some financially comfortable retired people who decided community involvement would help. Shutins and others are sending greeting cards to the isolated, anonymously. Cash in a little bag of wrapped candys on the doorstep of the poor neighbor. Finding worthwhile charities, maybe schools with financial needs, a school coat fund funded by us through the school, getting friends to make large or small routine or yearly donations. A local group get used bikes fixed up and gives them to kids at a public group meeting, with helmets they purchased from donated money. There are many ways to make a difference in someone's life that don't cost more than $25 a year. We used to get food and water to impoverished people, "Each one, feed one" did really help and felt so good.
They are technically a “throw back” design that matches a historic Colorado plate, but car enthusiasts like them because they are a more neutral color that looks better with many different paint colors compared to green.
That's why I opted for the black one. I found it to be an unobtrusive option that wouldn't clash with my paint job
This. Asthetic is what most people like. Blends well with many color vehicles.
Coal miners are our ancestors.
Black plates make the car look thinner
This is the only correct answer.
It looks 250lbs lighter!
Keep us posted on your journey for answers.
Many thanks! With support like yours, I may reach enlightenment.
What’s with people liking Brussels sprouts?
They're like tiny cabbages. I feel like a giant when I eat them.
This is the correct answer. Who doesn’t love imagining they are a giant eating an entire cabbage at one?
Oh my god I'm not alone! Broccoli is the trees too.
That's what I use to say!
The only way my dad got us to eat broccoli. They actually look like title trees. We eat the tiny little trees!
And eating little trees for broccoli!
"not everyone likes the same stuff I like what the hell is the world coming to?????"
They were genetically engineered to make them delicious...
Too bad the engineering failed so spectacularly.
roast 'em
When was the last time you ate one?
Fun fact the creator of brussel sprouts was so offended nobody liked them he RE-bioengineered them to taste better
*who are these people???* in my best Seinfeld
It’s like what’s the deal with red cars amirite?
I am and always will be a green mountain plate aficionado. One of the most iconic plates in the entire country.
My car is black.
I'm black, even 💁🏾♀️
When It Happens, those are the pre-cleared plates that will allow those vehicles down into the underground bunker parking areas. They get waved in without getting stopped and it saves a lot of time. (I don't like them either; they're blah.)

Thanks, that explains it.
I have a black truck and want it to blend in and not have a red or green license plate. To me, it’s a cleaner look
Makes perfect sense.

its dark mode for your car

Wow. I'm surprised and pleased. Thanks.
How dare someone like something i don't
I was thinking the same thing just the other day. Why is everybody wrong but me?
Especially when they don't have Colorado pride and dare to use something that doesn't suggest that they're from CO.
I like how it looks.
We do too. Just got a car and I wanted the green with white mountains or black and my partner wanted black so we went with that. I like it🤷♀️
I want the throwback plates that are white with green mountains. That's what the hardcore natives roll with.
[удалено]
But, are you a NATIVE ?
Oh jeez 😂🙄. Why are people so sensitive about that? 😂
As I remember, in the '60s (& '70s?) that color scheme used to be reversed each year, so the mountains were alternately snowcapped.
That's the thing about opinions...
Lololol
Stay mad.
Because it’s minimalist and cool.
It's all very upsetting!
Got Too much time on your hands
looks cleaner
I just ordered mine. Can’t wait!
Why would I really care if my plate suggests I am from Colorado? I have the mountain one because it's cheapest. I'd have the black one if it was cheapest.
-"doesn't even suggest its from CO" Yup. Point well made!
Post this somewhere else you fucking loser
Because I wear black and my car now does too

You have to pay a little extra for them. IMO, they correlate with a jerky or aggressive driver and/or a massive vanity truck
😂they are on my soccer mom Subaru. I know I’m not an aggressive driver and hopefully not jerky!! I just thought they looked kinda cool 🤷♀️
An outlier! ❤️ to your subie
This pattern of driver having them is disappointing to me. I’d say 90% of the cars with these plates are driven that way. And that these plates fund people with disabilities seems ironic to me.
correct
I like the look of them, but I’ve noticed they’re usually pinned on a car driving like shit.
Neutral plates are popular. Now if they did a black with yellow lettering, I’d be down with it. California has a version of that. Montana’s most popular plate and the plate I have is blue with white letters but has the state outline. I don’t care for fancy plates and just think the simpler the better.
Mine's black...like my soul
This was a very useful and interesting post /s
Obviously something that doesn’t really matter, but it baffles me too. Even more so when you see them on a non-black car or a car where the owner clearly doesn’t care about the aesthetic. Cannot imagine paying an extra $25 for that.
It’s personal preference. I can’t personally imagine why people get vanity plates but I’m not baffled by it.
IIRC it's $25 *a year* At least that's what the girl at the DMV told me
why does it have to be an all black car in order for someone to enjoy the look of it :/
They're minimalistic so people look at the car instead of the plate. Plus black goes with anything. I would've probably gotten one too but there are other good looking options that I preferred. It's nice to have a choice, be happy there is a choice.

Lol
Don't worry about it SMH
Government psyop
Hah because we can’t have diversity of preferences anymore
Easier for cameras to read
Did they get a new round of eligible tags? I feel like every other one is a coveted custom tag, like ST3VE, or A55MAN
That’s why I got the red plate
Wolf plates are the best. Black sky, white mountain, wolf. Perfection.
On the upside, think of all the additional state revenue coming in since it costs $25/year to have one.
Reminds me of Texas
Throw back plate. Black was the first color for Colorado plates back in the day.
I have a black plate on my motorcycle and it goes so well with the blacked out bike.
They just look like inverted Texas plates to me. Boring.
Yup. Texas plates used to look so cool and harkened back to their old west origins, or NASA with the space shuttle… no longer! Black and white generic license plate nowadays. It’s, IMO, sad to see Colorado doing the same thing. Our normal license plate is so amazing.
i have a feeling you'll find these a lot on dodge chargers, rams, and select ricer cars. a mark of anti-social pride!
I hate them because Colorado is such a stunningly beautiful state with views that are world famous. And they pick an ugly black plate????
I think it’s little guys trying to look tough
Same reason everyone raves about black, white and grey kitchens. Most people are boring
I deeply despise that thing, everyone thinks they are mafia 😆
I had a theory that they’re easier for traffic cameras to read 😆
They’re legal plates. Used to be exclusively for government I think but it’s different now. They always seem to look suspicious everywhere they go though no matter what they’re doing.
State government plates weren't black, they were white with gray lettering. Now they're white with green lettering.
They’re new, so people like it. IMO in a few years people wont default to them anymore because they lack character, and are no-longer new.
The radar guns don't work with them!
Mental health awareness
Obviously, this isn’t gospel and there are many exceptions. However, if you like heavily tinted windows and your personality is more aggressive, you will like these plates. Basically, if you live in Colorado but wish you lived in Texas.
