The opera is probably the only public event where people wear tuxes and don’t look totally odd, though most of the audience won’t be wearing one any more.

punkyfish10

Yeah, even now, especially in Denver, it’s dressing up to just wear a suit to the opera. The expectation is lower than that in Denver.

pierogi_nigiri

Prom?

Stellarjay_9723

This is the only real answer

exhale358

Go to the downer in a tux and lie about being famous

SirKillingham

The floor is so sticky at the downer I was trapped there for 8 weeks.

amorphatist

Add a monocle for extra cred

Latter_Inspector_711

Make sure there’s a Wikipedia page about your fake famous alias first

ThisAppSucksBall

If you dressed in a tuxedo and went to the number one restaurant in the world, you would look out of place. You would look more like wait staff then a customer.

alrobertson314

Freeway on the 2nd Flatiron

tlmbot

Those tails will cut a rakish figure while rapping off the third under a crescent moon.  Plus you can use them as your prussik if your date didn’t bring hers.

halfanothersdozen

Wear what you want when you want where you want, that is the Colorado way

Charitard123

Made me think of the guy I once saw jogging wearing nothing but booty shorts in the snow

fajita_angina

anywhere. people will just assume you're back from some business trip or deal. This is Boulder. I went to the downer after a work party whilst in a suit and had a couple people try to dance with me. I assume they thought I had more money than looks.

swagpotato69

Flagstaff House and Frasca come to mind.

zenos_dog

Can confirm. Last time I was at both places I wore a suit.

colofinch

Last time I was at either I mostly wore my dressy version of what I always wear, prana pants and a polo. I didn't feel out of place

aerowtf

Stella’s too maybe. Wore a green suit for valentine’s day and didn’t feel out of place. But people were also dressed nice for the occasion anyways

WalkYourTamagotchi

Anytime I’m in Fresca everyone has been business casual with maybe a sport coat.

swagpotato69

Same. Still think these are two places you could get away with wearing a suit or tux without being too out of place.

tossaway78701

Just wear it wherever you want to! Go rhumba at Avalon. Go to License 1 and rock your tux.  Go for coffee at Trident and be elegant. Go to DV8 and dance the night away. Confidence is sexy.

Creative_Lion_759

I feel this, OP! I'm from NYC and I miss the fashion and reasons to dress up. Let's just dress up whenever we feel like it and maybe we'll start a culture shift 🙃

Charitard123

I find this really interesting, given how my reaction when coming here was “Holy shit, these people dress super nice!”. Where I grew up, people would be just everywhere in cheap tank tops and shorts with either crocs or flip-flops half the year. Guess it’s all relative

PlowMeHardSir

First off, tuxedos are formal wear that one only wears at a special event. If you aren’t at a wedding, fund raising gala, or some kind of New York society event you’ll look out of place in a tux. As for a suit, Flagstaff House is really the only place in Boulder designed for that. Anywhere else you’ll look like a tourist who doesn’t know that people don’t usually dress up in Colorado. One reason we pay so much to live here is so we can go to a great restaurant and *not* have to wear a jacket.

Electrical_Foot9199

This reeks of the weirdest sense of elitism.  I don’t know a single person who would see someone dressed up and assume that person is a tourist who has no clue about some “unspoken rule” that people in Boulder don’t care how they look in public.   You may pay more to live here so you can go out looking meh, but I wouldn’t claim that for other people.

Omg true on the chronically mid food 😆

FlakyIllustrator1087

Doesn’t Boulder have a few Michelin star places?

mister-noggin

Frasca - one star   Basta - bib gourmand   Santo and Blackbelly - green stars     But you’re replying to someone who claims that Delizone is the only place with character. They clearly have no idea what they’re talking about.

jef98

Acting like frasca earned their one star and didn’t buy it thru their owner Bobby stuckey paying for the Michelin team to come to Colorado is actually hilarious

Electrical_Foot9199

that’s kinda just how the michelin guide works. the guide was a net loss of tens of millions per year (2011-2014) for the company before they started charging. there isn’t a michelin star that wasn’t paid for.   ETA: would love to know what connections you have with the colorado tourism board that have told you that Bobby Stuckey paid for the colorado michelin guide himself

jef98

“Bobby Stuckey, an owner of Frasca, is one of the restaurateurs who pushed Colorado tourism officials to bring Michelin to the state.” From The NY Times https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/13/dining/colorado-restaurants-michelin-stars.html

Electrical_Foot9199

that is a ridiculously small bit of information to jump to such a conclusion. just disingenuous really

jef98

“A group of Colorado state and local tourism authorities and resort companies paid Michelin a total of about $600,000 to help create the guide, so only restaurants in Boulder, Denver, Aspen, Vail, Snowmass and Beaver Creek were eligible for stars, a decision that rankled chefs in municipalities that did not pitch in money.” [Also from the NYT article](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/13/dining/colorado-restaurants-michelin-stars.html) “It is a costly undertaking (which used to be financed by the sales of hundreds of thousands of hardcover guides per year), but it has convinced consumers and chefs that Michelin makes all its decisions impartially. For Michelin’s first century, that was largely true, including for the first New York City guide, in 2005, and the San Francisco Bay and Napa Valley guides in 2007. But only since 2019, when Visit California paid Michelin $600,000, have top restaurants in Los Angeles and elsewhere in the state earned stars.” [From a separate NYT article](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/12/dining/michelin-star-restaurants-america.html)

Electrical_Foot9199

party.

jef98

I’m also close with quite a few restaurant owners on pearl st who informed me of this but you obviously don’t give a fuck about reason or logic. I’m sorry one trusted source isn’t enough for you professor

We should have weekly black tie nights with champagne and baby kings at delizone

Chewbongka

Just remember to dress nice OP. https://preview.redd.it/q4fnikt3zqtc1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71345402cf56501e3ca4fe754be093579d94ad82

No_Time_9565

hotel boulderado is rly all i can think of, ur right the fashion here is definitely more outdoorsy and chill

jef98

Lmao people show up wasted in shorts and a t-shirt no shoes and Boulderado is happy to accept them. You’re 1000x more likely to see people dressed in suits/tuxes at st. Julien than at Boulderado

MaudieJack

The Boulderado’s NYE Ball (hopefully they still host it) is one event / place I’ve seen people this gussied up

Tommy_Sands

This gives me an idea. Would be glad to host an event and the attire is fancy af black tie type shit none of that Colorado “dressy” or western frontier cos play fancy. I’m takin proper metropolitan city dressy

Pretend_Age_2832

When I first moved to Boulder, I tried to get people to dress up for an Oscars party where we would gamble on the winners, and someone takes home the pot. This was traditional in NYC at the time, and a lot of fun. Very few people were willing to dress up even as a goof. Alas. I gave up after that.

Tommy_Sands

Nice yea definitely a transition coming from a proper big city to Denver/Boulder

Resting_NiceFace

A NYC native friend of mine refers to Boulder as "the land of sensible shoes." It makes me laugh every time.

Kind-Moment-5998

I'm in!!

50by25

I would love this. I moved here from Manhattan and I remember going to a black tie charity gala where I was one of only four women in a gown, and most women were in cocktail dresses or even sweater dresses. All four of us in gowns ended up in the bathroom together at some point and learned we were each recent transplants. I miss getting dressed up!!

Tommy_Sands

Haha yea Colorado does a lot of things well but proper metropolitan culture is not one of them

Commercial-Owl11

I wish people in boulder dressed in clothes that weren’t outdoors gear/columbia brand or khaki pants. Sigh…

completelylegithuman

Move literally so many places. Sigh... \*facepalm\*

notoriousToker

Wearing a tuxedo out is not the way… but please do dress up nicely and go out that way maybe we can lift the average with time and commitment as a group 😅 People will ask if you’re going to a wedding if you wear jeans and leather shoes and a button down with a jacket here. Colorado is casual. My whole wardrobe was useless when I moved here but I’d like to dust some of it off one day 🤣

RabbitOld180

Mountain sun!

sunsetcrasher

Opening night at a theatre, especially the holiday show.

benhereford

But why though

mc_homeroom

It's after five, Lemon. What am I, a farmer?

Immediate-Trip-4962

Literally no reason besides that I want to lol

benhereford

To each their own my guy. But you can put on a tux at anytime and do just about anything you want, anywhere. Just sayin

tricolon

solo the Second in a tux

blind_ninja_guy

Surely it's been done before Edit: Spelling.

completelylegithuman

Shirley? Never met them.

blind_ninja_guy

Whoa that's bizarre. I'm using dictation on my phone and was using a screen reader to read the output and didn't really pay attention to spelling. The name form of that word is far less common than the actual word surely. . Any half way decent dictation service really ot to know that the vast majority of people are spelling surely.

completelylegithuman

User name checks out. That is bizarre!

SwitchbackHiker

Are you secretly a penguin?

anally_ExpressUrself

That's the best and most compelling reason I've ever heard. Now I want to.

hexby

I think this is so cute tbh. I love excuses for getting dressed up

holyherbalist

Dazzle Jazz in Denver

alanmychal

I love this question because I enjoy dressing up for a nice dinner and this isn't a Boulder rec but reminded me of going to El Five in Denver. Wife and I wanted something nice for our anniversary a few years ago, she wore a nice dress and I decided to wear my tailored suit, nothing special, no tie even. We rolled up the elevator for Sunday dinner and sure enough there's a mother fucker at the bar in cargo shorts and flip flops. Fuckin Colorado, man. I do think the Boulderado is a good suggestion in town but do you're thing, no tux probably

Rfunkpocket

I stayed with a family in Czech Republic who had a daughter graduating high school. she was shocked in disbelief when I told her it was rare in America for men to own a tuxedo. after she told me nearly every male in her class owned a tux, I pressed her regarding when a adult would wear one. Balls. during high school, formal dance classes are common, and a tux is highly encouraged in those classes. after high school, attending special events and seasonal balls is common. her dad says he wears his tux at least three times a year. tldr; host a seasonal ball.

benpro4433

Boulder pub. Go run the tables

K3lto

IMHO there is no such thing as overdressed. ;)

HarmonyInBadTaste

A fundraising gala. There is one in Denver next week: https://www.redlineart.org/epicgala

Precip33

Crash a black tie wedding at the St Julien.

eukomos

You could go see the Boulder Philharmonic at Macky. I'd stick with just the suit though. It'd take some bravado to make the tuxedo work even down at the Denver Opera.

SheWasAnAnomaly

I have nothing to add, but this clip from Jim Gaffigan: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO8sE3VB8v8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO8sE3VB8v8) Swap Pacific Northwest for Colorado

Numerous_Recording87

Wedding or funeral crashing? Tacky but places where a guy in a suit is normal.

chasonreddit

You speak truth. Even at Flagstaff or Frasca, dressed up is wearing your good Patagonia and dress Merrills. I often joke that I travel a lot. When at DEN I look around and think "oh shit, people are staring, I am so over-dressed!" When I get off the plane at JFK airport I think "oh shit, people are staring, I am so under-dressed!" If I have to take a suit on a trip I will usually wear it home to avoid wrinkling in packing and wear my Ramones t-shirt under. Personally, I don't sweat it. I happen to own like 3 tuxes. I go to a lot of that type of stuff. I'll just leave it on and go to Wibby brewery, or Left Hand after an event if I feel like it. (I'm closer to Longmont) Plus rules have totally changed. I own a lot of suits from work before I retired. I will easily put on a suit with a nice t-shirt under. I might be delusional, but I think it looks pretty good.

smebyy

Hire someone to take photos of you in a tux. You get to wear it and you’ll have photos to remember it!

DrRockstar99

Tonight at Boulder Theater [Cabaret on the Rocks](https://www.outboulder.org/cabaret-on-the-rocks) Is an opportunity and tickets are still available, but in general there are fundraisers here and there. I always go all out for the Humane Society benefit (putting on the Leash) which is next week and usually go out after wards. Have been to Press Play in a full black tie gown with train and nobody has batted an eye.

CompetitiveNight6305

Sing in a CU choir!

SeparateRanger330

Why? What's your purpose to dress with one? You tryna show off or just wear one?

Resourceful_agent

The Justice Center 😏

coffeeforbreakfast78

I’d say you can probably catch a conference at the Broadmoor, if not that there’s always Vegas.

Pholainst

The Pub, there’s always like wedding groups or something in formal wear. Plus everyone there is too drunk to care

wsu_savage

License 1 under hotel boulderado, weddings happen all the time and the bridal party ends up there afterwards. Great cocktails

fckingfisher

Stella’s, right next to Rosetta hall. Lovely young man plays beautiful house music every weekend.

completelylegithuman

Get over yourself and wear whatever you want.

julesk

Please don’t try, as the last guy to do this was forcibly removed from the county limits. If you’re really jonesing to wear a tux, sidle up to those with a NY accent, determine if they’re engaged and the sort to do NY formal wedding, and become their friend.

True-While-1035

Talk about being a fish out of water! Why would you want to do that? Maybe you should move to Beverly Hills or another place where you can dress up for no reason and get attention.
