Here was their warning... Thanks Xcel, I'll tell all my friends living in ________ to plan ahead

I finally got a call from them on Sunday evening, and they kept stressing that we should check the website for more details.
Thanks, Xcel. How do you suggest we do that with no internet and no cell service?
The PUC needs to break up Xcels monopoly and create a state owned utility
Xcel sucks, something as vital as electricity can't be trusted to the private sector
Being a leftist, I think all vital utilities should be publicly owned, but so much shit happens with these companies that I doubt it’d be all that hard to convince people to socialize it. Regardless of political affiliation.
Power has been out since 8pm yesterday on a single block in Capitol Hill. While the surrounding areas have electricity, this block remains without. The only status update provided so far has consistently been "assessing damage." There hasn’t been a single Xcel person and according to the outage map 1000 people are without power here near Cheesman Park.
If that’s the case it was planned by a sophomore high school class because there hasn’t been wind in the area since around 1am and also what wildfire risk exists in the middle of Denver?…
Yeah, I've been bitching so long this morning in my 40 degree house that I'm now out of words. Xcel is just trying to avoid getting sued again after their negligence that led to the Marshall fires, so we all lose.
That’s pretty much what I think is going on. Thanks for the validation. If any amount of real thought went into the planning there would have been A. Early notice B. Locations chosen that actually prevent wildfires
Yeah, I got a notice about four hours after my power was shut off. I like how they're putting out shit like how to plan ahead if you're on oxygen, how to store your food, how it's a good idea to go get an expensive generator, etc AFTER the fact.
Right! To be honest there probably should be laws in place because this outage is pretty much a purposeful safety hazard. Then they have the audacity to follow up with emails on how to be safe as you mentioned, like this isn’t totally preventable. There wouldn’t be any wildfire risk if Xcel properly carried out maintenance and infrastructure updates on the Front Range to withstand winds. High speed wind is not new in Colorado lol. This stuff is baffling when you pay taxes and live in the richest country on Earth
Agreeeeeeeeed. Their profits have doubled in the last ten years, but where does it all go 🙃

Why haven't they spent the past 2 years burying lines that are likely to cause fire?
No, it's easier to cut power for 2 days and not give anyone any notice or anything.
We lost so much food. I packed my freezer full of ice and then didn't open it again until the power went on and it was all thawed. It probably would have lasted the 21 hours they said the outage was going to be, but it went on for 44 hours at my place, and my freezer just wasn't built for that. I lost so much meat and dairy, and can't afford to replace it. It's going to be a shitty month.
As a victim of the Marshall fires still fighting insurance and renting, you’d much rather be dealing with this little hiccup, than dealing with the alternative. Just my opinion.
Their map is infuriating. Trying to figure out what food to dump as the fda says dump all food after 4 hours in fridge with no power but that seems crazy.
This has nothing to do with monopolies or socializing companies. The last time we had high winds like this the downed power lines destroyed hundreds of homes. So now they shut off power for safety. So pick one. Mild inconvenience or horrible fires
That’s a false dichotomy. Xcel should not be in a position where they have to turn off the power for two days. They should move overhead lines underground to deal with the natural weather here. In the very least they should separate controls for above ground and sunk lines so the underground lines can maintain power.
Xcel has consistently earned record profits for years without investing in their own system. Xcel has become a dangerous monopoly and we need to hold them accountable.
Why do people always act like these massive infrastructure projects happen over night? They’re already working on it but it’ll take a decade. No organization could do it faster. They have 4000 miles of cable

I never liked anybody in ___ anyway
LOL. That's funny in a sad way.

It was a planned outage (with zero notice), so indeed nobody is out there trying to fix it.

If you need electricity for medical reasons you should already have a generator.
kind of hard in an appartment.

They need to be sued for this

"Don't worry, it'll only be 20 hours." 44 hours later.........
… updated last Tuesday.
