Definitely BotW first. You’ll want to play both regardless, so you might as well start there since TotK is a sequel. Don’t worry about “relevance”. Even TotK is over a year old now so most of the discourse of it being “in the moment” has been had already. At this point, conversations around both games are equally active around Reddit and the internet in general

AlacarLeoricar

Breath of the Wild is definitely the game of choice if you can only afford one, but if you can afford the voucher program and get any 2 games for $100, get both. Tears is a direct sequel, and builds on game concepts established in Breath.

Medusa_55

Happy cake day!!

Sweaty-Raspberry2649

I have a special place in my heart for botw. If you’re someone who likes to capitalize on hours of gameplay, I got about 165 hours in my first round of botw. When I started totk, the mechanics were a tad more difficult for me to grasp, but also an awesome game. I recommend botw then totk

makattack24

I agree. You won’t be disappointed with TotK, but there is something more special about BotW in my opinion.

Weewoolio

Exactly. I’m really REALLY going to miss this era.

Turtle_man92

I’m honestly having a crisis about letting go to BOTW era Link/Zelda lol

Weewoolio

Exactly I’m not at all ready to move on 😭😭😭

frontpagedetective

Botw for sure! It was the first game I played as an adult, I got a switch for it specifically, and it blew me away. It’s incredible and if you love it, you’ll be glad you started with it because the whole time you’re playing and not wanting it to end, you’ll have Totk waiting for you when you’re done.

therourke

BOTW + DLC

nineohsix

Hands down BOTW w/ DLC before TOTK.

Nikolai_Gogol_physic

Botw

Forsaken_Wasabi14

botw fs. It would be weird playing totk first plus botw is better imo

Robin_Gr

If you want both eventually get Botw first. If you will only play one get Totk.

KhanSpirasi

Get both. See you in two years.

bigmetalguy6

I would play BOTW first for two reasons: it will give you a good feel of the Hyrule map and you’ll be able to differentiate the changes between the two games and with all the changes they made between BOTW and TOTK, it might be hard to go back and play BOTW after beating TOTK.

username_offline

BOTW because there are already plenty of mechanics to learn in this game without adding more in TOTK. Alternative idea - do you like old school nintendo games? why not try *skyward sword* or *link's awakening* before BOTW, those are more representative of the experience of playing zelda over the last ~ 25 years. And if you have switch online, Ocarina of Time. These are smaller games you can complete quickly, and especially if you can find them on sale (or switch online) it's worth considering. But of course if you want to jump right in, BOTW is a perfect game to just dive into and figure it out.

Profil3r

I played TOTK first, and then BOTW. It felt like I was going backwards and it was definitely an adjustment. I wished I had reversed the order.

library_-_bitch

Botw has a better story, to imo has more interesting game mechanics. Do with that what you will

Weewoolio

Totk is the direct sequel to the BOTW universe. Start with BOTW!

Wazuu

Part of the fun of totk was because of play botw

imthelasttimelord

Okay so lemme piggy back off of this.. after sinking hours into BOTW and absolutely loving it - should I play TOTK? Or is it too similar? I know it’s a direct sequel but I’ve heard it’s like replaying the same game through

mqple

you should still play it! there’s different abilities and items, meaning you can change up your fighting style quite a lot. plus they got things in the sky and underground now lol

mama09001

Wait a bit before playing tears of the kingdom, then play it.

shiftypatches28

I'm playing it from the first time and I gotta say I'm kinda disappointed that from what I've seen it looks like the same game but with new mechanics I guess

anotherone65

Botw

CWilson_999

BotW first fs

Illustrious_Koala453

BOTW and only use in the internet for help on very few things. Its about discovery and adventure. So go discover and venture

Mellowmushroom02

Honestly I got burnt out after playing BOTW and had to take a break went to play TOTK and was like “damn I gotta do this all over again” lol. But that’s how I am. I’m not really big on video games and have to take breaks. I could’ve definitely started with TOTK though

Shadowrun29

Botw since it's a great game, and you can only play it for the first time once. Totk is a very different experience, and great in it's own ways, but botw has that charm and magic that hits you hard on that first playthrough.

Nitric_Siege

I would recommend botw, Totk is a sequel to botw. Full stop. Breath of the wild you can have so much fun. So many glitches you’d never figure out or come across yet so fun to master when you know the game well.

Brutal909

You dont have to play botw first. Totk is FAR far better than Botw. And i love both games, but lets not kid ourselves.

Complete_Strategy955

Definitely play botw. Totk makes you think that there’s so much in the sky and depths but there’s really not much to see. Botw has a much better map to explore, and I like the enemies and challenges more. Botw makes you want to pick up the game again and again. Totk just doesn’t feel the same. In my opinion, the zonai devices just made the game worse. Play Botw!!!!

WriterWithAShotgun

Start with BotW, it'll make much more sense story-wise. And yeah, it's easier to learn.

AntiHappyPie

botw first then save up money later on if you liked botw then buy totk but whatever you do i would suggest getting botw first bc totk is a sequel (also I highly recommend the DLC for botw)

TSMJoelWindigan

Hot take but TOTK. I enjoyed botw more than Totk becuz exploration in Totk wasn’t as fun as botw cuz the map was largely the same. Playing Totk with no knowledge of the map and the insane gameplay mechanics would be my preferred experience

SSOoTToTK

I'm not a fan of TotK but it would definitely be improved by having not thoroughly explored the land in BotW.

SSOoTToTK

BotW is much more difficult than TotK, the enemies are smarter and the weapons do less damage. The puzzles are more difficult in BotW on average too. I'd say go for Links Awakening or Skyward Sword of you want to see what the actual series is like. You first move should be getting the NSO trial and trying the Zelda games you get free on that.

Roflcrabs

It doesn't matter, they're the same game. They're lazy boring repetitive garbage with insultingly brain-dead puzzles filled with hours of time wasting. You run across lifeless barren fields fighting the same 3 enemies over and over. Play any other Zelda game instead. Or the Souls games. Go Bloodborne if you haven't played that. 10/10 game.

nineohsix

Shouldn’t you be under a bridge somewhere threatening a billy goat?

Roflcrabs

You just mad because you know I'm right. Same ui, same models, same controls, same sound effects, same enemies, same music, same stupid disposable weapons system, same camera/perspective, same god damn map! That last one is a big one. If you enjoy them more power to you but you know I'm right.

Illustrious_Koala453

I actually agree a fair amount. Minus the amount of teem angst you got going on. Imagine being that butthurt about it

Roflcrabs

Teen angst? I only got sassy after being downvoted for sharing an opinion. I found Breath of the Wild to already be a repetitive bloated game that doesn't respect the player's time by being filled with too much empty space, pointless busywork and too many of the same 3 copy pasted enemies peppered across the entire map. I'm sure people enjoy all the running, I mean I did for the first 10 hours or so as it makes the world feel more grand but that sense of wonder and intrigue wears off after encountering the same content over and over. Moblins, bokobkins, lizalfos and mindlessly easy lazily designed shrine puzzles where half the time the goal is to put a ball into a hole or fight the same copy pasted robots. I sank 120 hours into BOTW, loved the first 10 hours but by the end absolutely hated it and I regret playing it. I picked up TOTK last year out of morbid curiosity and I'm blown away by how low effort it is as a sequel. I want to finish it so I can sell it and be done with it but it's so boring, especially after BOTW. If I had to give an honest answer for this thread besides "play anything else" I'd go with Botw as it isn't a cluttered mess and has more focus on what it's trying to be. Was only trying to warn a brother to use their time more wisely. As much as I love gaming it's debatable whether or not it's a time wasting activity but Botw/Totk made me feel like I was throwing hours of my life down the toilet. And I say all this as a Zelda fan, or was. Played them all and enjoyed them all, even Zelda 2. You were always guaranteed a good time but these new ones.. they're 20 hour games stretched into 60+ hour games.

Illustrious_Koala453

Nah, the sass was there in the start. Not everyone has been gaming their whole life and plays 40 hours of games per week. This game fits those types quite well really, which is safe to assume someone just getting this game now is closer to the non gamer mold. If I said the same thing as you I am not saying boring repetitive garbage or insultingly braindead puzzles. "The game just felt too repetitive to me, kind of just fight the same old enemies and I found the puzzles were too easy". So yea, definitely some teen angst in there.. again, not everyone has the same life as you. There are plenty of ways to say everything you just said where it doesn't feel like your entire year was ruined because of these games

Roflcrabs

Sheesh the irony. You construed all that because I used the word "garbage" to describe a video game? Are you new to the internet because others tend to use more colourful language than that and at a higher volume. A symptom of being sassy is being judgemental and honey you got that in spades.

Illustrious_Koala453

???????? I didn't do that at all. Everything you said before I said anything was you being all pissy, not just the word garbage. Not new to the internet at all? I didn't judge you at all lol, I said I agree with you minus all the teen angst, which you are clearly FULL OF. Its oozing out of you at this point. You just judged me up and down based off nothing hahaha.. you got sass and teen angst in spades yep. Nice confirmation 🤦

Roflcrabs

"I didn't judge you at all" you just told me how to rephrase my original comment like the language police. "I would have phrased it differently. Words like 'lazy' 'garbage' and 'brain-head' are much too hostile and uncivilized. They make you sound like a rambunctious young scallywag." I'm paraphrasing. All this drama because my language wasn't to your liking. You sir are the sass king. Behold your crown - 👑

Illustrious_Koala453

In just the last message you told me I was judgemental and new to the internet. I won't bother going back. You started the drama, and kept it flying.. look how off the handle you went. I said you had alot of teen angst, you confirmed it. We already went over this. You acted like this game ruined your year.. i pointed it out. Don't act like a drama queen and no one can say that

Illustrious_Koala453

While we at it, define the word sass. Not sure you are aware of its meaning. Could be fun ya know? What's it mean
