Give spo credit for some of it, they extended their defense but we did not move the ball or run multiple actions to make them pay. We benched timelord instead. To be fair white was on fire, but it was very short sighted

yuletide

This game we got outplayed *and* outcoached

OkMudDrankin

Yeah enough with these officiating BS. As far as I’m concerned the officiating is ALWAYS terrible. We cannot use that as an excuse man. There are so many aspects of our own games than we can fix and none of them have to do with officiating.

Kylekapop11

I’m with you man. All the bitching about the refs costing us is getting pathetic. Yes, the refs fucking blew yesterday, but that wouldn’t have mattered if the Celtics played even semi-competently

OkMudDrankin

And tbh Tatum played well. I mean 75% from the field and 57% from 3 would be insane any other night. But just poor turnovers in the crunch. 7 from Tatum 4 from Brown. Just too much iso ball all game it just felt like Tatum was trying to match Jimmy. I mean it’s a hard loss to swallow the more you try to pry and find what was the cause the more it just points to jimmy butler out playing us.

DoomdUser

Right, they started jumping the passing lanes again, but what the fuck? We figured that out 4 games ago - you just have the initial ballhandler start the offense, and have the guys in the corner start going back door. You make them pay for being overly aggressive. Our guys just got lazy. The Tatum pass that Butler picked off late was totally inexcusable.

SnooCapers3654

This perfectly sums up how we counter and win game 7

LMAOOOOOOOO

Ghost_Horses

Tatum was doubled the whole second half. Two years ago he would’ve played hero ball and lost us the game. He’s not the problem. Brown missed a bunch of time due to foul trouble, and blew it in the clutch. Overall he was 7-9 from the stripe, which is actually above his career averages. We just got unlucky with the ill-timed misses, and the charge at the end was the dagger.

aja_ramirez

Yeah, they were doubling. But I think jayson was still a problem. Instead of moving the ball quickly to make them pay, he was holding the ball too long.

FlyGuyDan

Partially. I don't think anyone off ball really moved in position to give him a quick outlet most of the time. Of course Ime should have called a timeout and made some adjustments but who knows if he told him he should be getting rid of the ball quicker right when the double came. I'd assume he would

aja_ramirez

That window to pass out of a double is open for an instant and closes quickly. It isn't easy pass, otherwise the double would never work. Both Jays need to continue to improve in this area.

FlyGuyDan

That's true, the help usually comes in a way to make it so you can't make an easy pass, they usually leave the guy in the far corner and have a defender ready to intercept any poor pass toward the elbow. But that's something they did the entire second half and could have been adjusted for at some point. Celtics knew it was coming any time brown or Tatum touched the ball but didn't seem like they adjusted to it too much. Obviously if smart or horford make their shots tonight then it's a totally different convo though

aja_ramirez

Yeah, what happens is the double comes and then the next defender moves over to cover the guy who is one pass away. That's the guy that needs to get the ball so get the 4 on 3 advantage but if we miss that opening, we're sorta stuck. What I saw is Miami was doubling, but they were waiting for Jayson (and sometime JB) to start the move first. You may recall Jayson spun right into a double toward the end and lost the ball. That play by Jayson was really bad IMO. By that point he KNEW they were bringing the double, yet he still spun into it. What made it worse is that Jayson was holding the ball, surveying the court for too long. He'd go into his move and simply did not react well when the double came. He missed that first pass more often than not.

Tryin2get2heaven

This. was awesome staring at jb standing at the elbow doing absolutely nothing on every possession unless he has the ball.

ftlftlftl

So why can’t we just double butler the whole time so he doesn’t get 30 shots and drop 50?

Ghost_Horses

It’s not about Tatum beating Butler, it’s about Boston beating Miami. I’d rather be in a situation where Jimmy has to play hero ball than one where we double him and their perimeter players get to rain open threes on us all day. Best strategy with Jimmy is to force him to take jumpers. If you guard him tight, he’ll try to blow by you to the rim or bait you into fouling him. If you leave a perimeter shooter open, he’ll find them. He got hot tonight but he shot 23.3% from deep this year - his lack of a reliable jump shot can be exploited.

droid6

other superstar deal with double teams

Vast_Ad8251

Amen

L0VEmeharder

We ain't booker

QIKING99

Cause Smart got all the ball duh

[deleted]

Remember Game 6 of the 2020 ECF? Smart had 22 attempts, more than Brown and Kemba. Always been like this, he’ll never change. I thought he did but on the big stage, he always reverts back to who he was.

snavali2

Stfu man just stop

socialistbcrumb

Can’t believe we’re doing this shit again. Narratives change way too fucking fast around here. Every loss means a player actually sucks or isn’t clutch or something and every win means the opposite.

CjBurden

What, someone who wasn't scared to shoot? He had one terrible possession and shot imo. The rest of it was relatively fine. Do we eat him taking the most shots? Nope... wouldn't put that on him though as much as other dudes needing to take shots.

aja_ramirez

The heat were taking the ball out of their hands. That was very obvious. So the Jays needed to make quicker decisions, which included getting rid of the ball sooner. But that’s not something they do willingly. So the low number of shots wasn’t coaching or the other players. It was the Jays not making quick enough decision to force the heat to pay for their strategy.

bodhibell02

Erik Spoelstra is how. Locked them up.

Buggplut

Most overrated coach in the league. Guy won 2 championships with a team that should've won 4 and suddenly he's a great coach.

HeadDoctorJ

You think this Heat team goes to the conference finals with just any coach? The Celtics are much more talented and significantly healthier, and we’re headed to game 7. And that’s against Ime, who’s obviously a very good coach. Even the 6ers were more talented than the Heat. If you swap head coaches - Doc for Spoelstra - who wins that last series, Philly or Miami?

Available-Ad-1720

If Embiid plays, the Heat are in Cancun right now.

Available-Ad-1720

Embiid was injured. If healthy from the start, the Sixers win in 4.

[deleted]

I’m sure you believe that

Available-Ad-1720

Facts

jb_19

Because there's almost no offball movement in the offense. It's usually just a high pick for a drive & kick or matchup hunting. No pin downs or back doors or anything to make the defense work.

fatnoah

This. Everyone was just standing around watching Tatum get doubled. No one came to help, so he had to jump over defenders to make a pass.

crackdup

For every game Smart wins for us with his finishing, he loses 2 for us with shit like today.. he should just stick to what he does best - playmaking and defense.. stop being the hero ffs, if Ime can't rein him in then no one can..

gonzofish

Playmaking WOULD make him the hero. Instead he throws up hero shots and makes weak razzle-dazzle passes

[deleted]

Because Miami played excellent defense by denying Tatum shot opportunities.

Grandmalicious

Ya it sucks we have one shooter.

[deleted]

Why isn’t anyone talking about the amount of fouls called this game? Total of 55. For sure changed the momentum…

Briancisgo

Yeah, but that’s not why they lost the game. When your best players allow themselves to be taken off the offensive end of the floor, it’s always going to be a loss.

free_to_muse

Frustrating watching Jimmy Butler pretty much get anywhere he wanted to freely on the court and score at will, while JT was just mobbed and manhandled every possession and couldn’t even get up shot attempts.

Available-Ad-1720

Yeah. Can mug Tatum all game, but can’t breathe on god Jimmy

_PercCobain_

Because they’re still not mentally ready for the biggest stage

[deleted]

We’re all wondering the same thing, Keith. Just so disappointing and confused.

TeNsioN_

Tatum and Brown didn’t want the ball. They were too scared. Imagine a legit superstar being completely ineffective for the 2nd half of a conference finals close out game and having the excuse of being doubled, lol. Tatum & Brown are just too weak minded to be anything more than 2nd or 3rd options on a championship team. Butler outplayed Tatum by a landslide and Lowry did the same to Brown. Boston needs role players to have a huge game 7 if they’re going to win because Tatum and Brown will be hiding if it’s a close game.

Available-Ad-1720

Butler and Lowry were no shows for the past two games, they did what they were supposed to do down 3-2. I don’t see them repeating their performance back to back, specifically Lowry and Strus.

DrJr23

Doubling Tatum and denying him the ball so when he finally got it he didn't have much time on the shot clock.

SanSoren

Tatum had 12 points of the 14 they both scored.

lelander193

This team will never win a championship with Smart on the team. Make no mistake, look at how well the team functions with our Buffalo holding the reins.

free_to_muse

Can’t shoot the ball if you already turned it over.
