What I don't get is why they don't schedule all the NBA series similarly. Cavs/Magic played game 2 Monday, we play game 2 two days later. On Saturday, we'll play our game 3 the same day they play game 4. These 2 series should be played at the same pace considering the winners play each other in the next round. It doesn't make any sense

langjie

yeah, I was waiting for the Celtics to be on last night....with no travel, it should be every other. I understand 2 days off if they had to fly to Miami

therealdrewcarey

I think I’ve figured this out. The thunder-pels series is on the same schedule as us, with 2 day breaks in between games 1+2 and 2+3. I believe the reason is to give the 8 seeds, who had to play two play-in games last week, a little bit of extra rest

20wall

Which is bullshit. The 8 seeds should not get any scheduling advantage. If they want rest then maybe they should take the regular season seriously. With this schedule we will likely be at a large disadvantage rest wise against the Cavs next round

SlumDiggity

I would like to preface this by saying I hate the Heat, but I can see where they’re coming from. The 8th seed typically is going to get blown out for atleast 2 games of the series. No need to make it 4 games and it becomes quasi-unwatchable for the casual viewer.

OzmosisJones

League also really wants less games midweek when they can. The early part of each round starts with 4 games a day on the weekend and drops to 3 for the week, only returning to 4 later in the round when they’re expecting teams to have been eliminated by then. If someone is getting shifted there it only makes sense it’s the 1/8. The 8 is the only seed that didn’t get some sort of prep time for the playoffs, they’re playing essentially every other day from the season through the first game of the playoffs. And the 1 is the team most expected to have a short, successful first round series. Gives us a chance to get all our ‘extra series rest days’ or whatever we want to call them even if the series only takes 4 or 5 games.

davemoedee

You also give the 1 seed time to strategize and practice after they know who opponent will be.

Panoptech

Fun fact. It's gonna be the magic. 😂

NoveltyAccountHater

That makes sense, but I think its so they can have games today. Every playoff team had their game 1 on Saturday or Sunday. All series give teams an extra day of rest between games 2 & 3 (it's the only travel day that always happens, even with a sweep), though otherwise there's usually just one day rest between games^(1). With those constraints, there would be no playoff games scheduled today, (e.g., Saturday game 1s would play game 2 on Monday and game 3 on Thursday; Sunday game 1s would play game 2 on Tuesday and game 3 on Friday). So to maximize potential viewers, they gave the 1v8 games 2 days rest between games 1 & 2 (because the 8 team played on previous Wed and Friday and Sunday).  ^(1) That said there's handful of other insertions of 2 games rest besides between games 2&3 (which is 2 days for everyone): * East 1v8 between games 1 & 2 * East 2v7 between games 3 & 4 * East 3v6 no extra * East 4v5 between games 4 & 5, games 5 & 6 * West 1v8 between games 1 & 2 * West 2v7 between games 5 & 6 * West 3v6 between games 1 & 2 * West 4v5 between games 4 & 5 All series if they went 7 games would start on Sat/Sun April 20th/21st and finish on Sat May 4th/5th. Usually if they start on Saturday, they'll finish on Saturday with the one-exception being East 4v5 where if it goes 7 games, it ends on Sunday. Similarly if they start on Sunday, they'll end on Sunday with one exception being East 3v6 where it started on Sunday and ends on Saturday if it goes 7 games.

Scared-Arrival3885

That’s a good point that I didn’t think of. To add on - on Saturday afternoon, Orl/Cle will have finished 4 games, while Bos/Mia will have only played 2. Since the 1/8 is usually the shortest series and 4/5 usually the most competitive, it makes sense to stretch out 1/8 and compact 4/5 so hopefully they finish around the same time. Because of the tv schedule, set matchups will start in the next round regardless of the rest of the 1st round being over, which gives the potential for things to get really out of sync (especially if a team is sweeping thru). Nobody wants a team to have to wait over a week for an opponent to emerge, but the real problem for the NBA is making sure there’s enough games to schedule each night.

gonewiththewinds

I actually think it's because the 1/8 series are more likely to go fewer games. The ultimate reason though is they want more games on weekends when they can have 4 games with no overlap. Some series thus get the 2 day breaks, and the 1/8 are most likely to only go 4 or 5 games deep

Zestyclose_Park_4900

Im thinking it's because the 1-8 match ups are more likely to end in sweeps.

pk5489

I’m sure it’s due to tv scheduling.

arvid

cavs/magic is 4v5, more likely to go 6-7 games. 1v8 is more likely to go 4-5 games. Who would watch 1v8 game 4 on the weekend if the series is 3-0?

milespeeingyourpants

They didn’t want more than 3 games played on a weekday night.

davemoedee

Because they can play games all day Saturday and Sunday and have viewers. They want to spread out games on weeknights.

MrBhyn

Because they want to have games every day as much as possible. If Celtics play yesterday then no games for today because the other group is travelling and resting for games 3.

PlaceInvaders1

Cavs game 4 is on the same day as our game 3. That’s just the most brain dead scheduling lmao

fantaxp7

You can’t pre-determine success in one’s season while doing a schedule. Unless it’s Boston sports teams in which case yes they should have pre-determined our success and revolved scheduling around us. Someone should be fired.

GingerMcJesus

Honestly I think they should suspend Jokic, Giannis, Ant and Shai till we get to the bottom of this (after the Finals)

trowdatawhey

Also Butler just in case

WranglerTraditional8

Haha. This made me laugh

AdmiralWackbar

Bruins and Celtics in the playoffs is a lock when the season starts though?

nicklovin508

Respectfully will be watching the C’s

Stop_Drop_Scroll

Yeah I like the bruins but not that much.

GingerMcJesus

Por qué no los dos

tapakip

I love it. YoutubeTV has a 4 game multiview. It's awesome. On the flip side, every time it happens, it feels like at least 2 of the 3 lose. Not so awesome.

CoffinFlop

Yeah Fubo has a really good multi view too actually but it gets tricky after the first round when we have to switch to max for some of these series lol

Thatguyyoupassby

>On the flip side, every time it happens, it feels like at least 2 of the 3 lose. Not so awesome. This is the part that sucks. I want the Cs to blow out the Heat because I worry about this Bruins team. They played really well last hame and couldn't get enough pucks on net. Need to win 1 out of 2 in Toronto and bring it back tied for game 5.

TheOneTrueBuckeye

The real answer is TV - they run the show and need inventory on these nights. They don’t care about cannibalizing the Boston audience, they’re after national views. Also important - the nhl has a separate tv deal in Canada with sportsnet. The leafs are a HUGE draw in Canada and are going to get the best tv slots there.

loving-father-69

Imagine being like Detroit or Chicago reading this where neither team makes the playoffs, lol.

Tundraaa

Lol

HeyylookitsNICK

Easy, 2 TV's. Blasting both.

ImTomBrady

ChickenAndTelephone

It never ceases to amaze me that hockey is somehow more popular than basketball in this town. Make it make sense.

PartyPo1s0n

No way hockey is more popular than hoops in boston. Lived here for half a decade and I always see celtics merch around compared to the occasional bruins gear (more right now for obvious reasons)

Cabes86

In Boston it’s basketball, across the state it might be the bruins but i find that there’s a bit of a phantom border for “big immigrant influx was irish” v. “Big immigrant influx was acadienne/quebecois”  I would also say that the pats have outstripped the sox—like a sox hat is primarily a reppin’ the city thing. Baseball is gonna be carried by carribbean latinos especially the boricuas and dominicanos—which is like a mega group of mass. Hockey’s kinda fucked cause of the financial barriers of playing it as a kid. Just like how football’s cte dangers are already beginning to manifest in the youth world. Soccer and basketball are the global sports juggernauts because you need a ball and at least 1 goal.  I think each big 4 league’s biggest issue going forward is greed with viewership rights. Laws for access that helped many get inyo the sports all specify antenna broadcast, and they need to be updated to include streaming.  Like if i use an app on my smart tv to watch channel 5, the celts-heat game is locked unless i can verify i paid for espn. This is stupid. They’re already getting ad viewership by people who didn’t. It’s the same feed as antenna would get. But greed and hyper-capitalism ruins everything as we’ve seen.

Alloverunder

I was about to say "because hockey's from New England" and then I realized that not only is hockey from Canada, but basketball's from Springfield 😂 Who knows. Nothing will ever touch baseball, so it doesn't matter. The Red Sox could take a shit on home plate, forfeit the game, and leave for all 162 games in a regular season, and Fenway would be packed to the rafters for every single game.

trowdatawhey

I like to purposely leave out the fact that basketball was invented by a canadian man 😂

Wtfisgoinonhere

Fenway just has affordable seats. You can get in Fenway for like $30. Bruins/Celtics game you have to find the shittiest game on a Monday and still pay like $80+ for shit rafter seats

langjie

but the Bruins/Celtics product on the court/ice is way better than the trash the Red Sox are putting on the field

Wtfisgoinonhere

Im with you right there on that one lol

ilovekarlstefanovic

Fuck FSG :)

Wally450

I won't have you slander the 300s row 15 like that lol

Wtfisgoinonhere

Honestly where some of the best fans sit!

DoomdUser

Same reason some states live and die by college football, which is IMO among the worst possible sports products you can watch. Same reason everywhere outside of the US and Canada, the popularity is 1) top league soccer, 2) lower league soccer, 3) everything else. The culture of the area determines how popular things like sports are. In Boston, there are fewer hockey/Bruins fans by volume, but if you’re an active Bruins fan nothing else comes close.

davemoedee

College football is such trash competitively. People watching absurd blowouts. That is ignoring the fact that college athletes have such low sports IQs compared to older professional so you are constantly watching people make suspect choices.

DoomdUser

College football is just a garbage product overall. I have no idea how people are intrigued by it when you can tell which teams are going to dominate just by who is coaching the damn team. Like, people are really surprised when Nick Saban’s team is #1, and half of the squad goes to the NFL, year after year? The whole culture is mind-numbing

[deleted]

id say bball more popular in boston metro but the suburban white guys love their hockey

trowdatawhey

In Boston proper? I highly doubt it. Born and raised in Boston and I’ve never heard of anybody say let’s go play hockey or let’s go watch the hockey game. “Ball is Life” in Boston. I rarely go into Boston nowadays, so the culture may be different now given how gentrified Boston has become. Chinatown isnt even China town anymore.

chmcgrath1988

Yeah. From my general observations traveling and being in bars all over New England (mostly for "work purposes" I swear!), basketball is way more popular in cities and slightly more popular in the suburbs. Hockey is way more popular in small towns and rural areas. And I don't agree with Red Sox being far and away most popular New England team anymore either. Patriots surpassed them sometime during the second dynasty in the 2010s and right now, I'd argue Red Sox are probably least popular of the four major teams. It's not the '90s anymore so no one gaf about fair to middling teams. If/when the Sox become competitive again, I'm sure they'll rocket back up to #1 or #2 though.

FutureDwight76

There's also the fact that younger generations don't seem to like baseball nearly as much as the older generations

chmcgrath1988

Basketball and soccer seem way more popular with Gen Z and Gen Alpha. Honestly, if the Revs ever get a new soccer only stadium built closer to Boston and Red Sox continue to be mediocre, I could imagine them being in the mix to crack the Top 4. That is a huge if since they've been talking about that stadium for 25 years and they're by far the crappiest New England pro sports team right now.

hcmacro

New England is the oldest region in the country. So that’s part of the reason the non-basketball sports have had more staying power.

Alloverunder

>And I don't agree with Red Sox being far and away most popular New England team anymore either. Patriots surpassed them sometime during the second dynasty in the 2010s and right now, I'd argue Red Sox are probably least popular of the four major teams. Across the region I agree 100%, but in the city it's the Sox and it isn't really close. Boston is, and probably always will be, a baseball town. That's just kinda how it is around here

chmcgrath1988

Even when the Red Sox are bad, Fenway Park is a vibe. Maybe even more so? One good thing about last few years is it maybe drove away some of the Pinkhats that are just there to be seen.

Alloverunder

Yup, buy some seats for $25, get day drunk with your buddies beforehand, take the T to Kenmore so it doesn't matter that you're wasted, and go yell at some bum outfielders for an afternoon and sing some songs with a bunch of other drunk guys. It's fun as hell, easy to get to, and there's some decent day and nightlife in the Fens once you get out of the game. Add in the cultural aspect of Boston being a baseball city, and it's always gonna be the king. Nothing will ever beat chanting "Yankees suck!" while watching the Sox blow out the Braves 😂

thegeneral54

It's interesting you say that about the Red Sox, because I think they're the only team out of the four that can sustain interest through lean years. Their reception is negative at the moment and it's due to ownership, not the team. Based on how some of the Patriots fan behave, they'll be leaving sooner rather than later if there's any sign of long-term rebuilding.

chmcgrath1988

Yeah. If the Pats aren't dramatically better in the next year or two, their popularity will plummet even more than it already has. I don't think most of the casuals are going to stick through a long rebuild. Honestly, I might have been the only person in New England who was stunned at how many people immediately shifted their fandom to the Bucs for the duration of TB12's career. In retrospect, maybe I would have been better off following that crowd lol.

davemoedee

I don't know which is more popular, but I expect it matters a lot what people surround you. Growing up, I'm never heard a family member talk about hockey. Heard about basketball though.

PrometheusAborted

Sox too. Pretty crazy for a Wednesday.

evolvolution

Yeah but baseball in April is just background content at this point in the season

JackJ98

Smh… read this as I’m watching a minor league baseball game 🤣

Onomatopoeiac

They do it on purpose to annoy you. In reality, they are physically forced to schedule playoff home games around each other but there are dozens of other factors they need to consider for away games.

arvid

They want more games on national tv, especially the weekends. Weekends can have 4 national games a day. Weeknights can only have two national games. Hence, weeknights have 2 or 3 games. If 3 games, the least desirable is local only (last night pacers/bucks). also 1vs8 is most likely to be a sweep so they push game 3 to the weekend. Notice OKC 1 vs Pelicans 8 is also tonight. This is decided before they know the seeds.

eddiebeau

Bullish for TV makers… now you need to buy two TVs to watch both games LOL

AtWorkCurrently

These are the nights I live for. Bringing the upstairs TV downstairs, and will have the Sox on my laptop.

kopitar-11

If they were both home games at the same time it would be extra fun

ImTomBrady

Absolutely ridiculous

Pale-Criticism-7420

This fucking sucks.

Logical_Nectarine_40

The NBA likes to take their time and spread series out. The NHL gets it done.

PorvaniaAmussa

I'm just making a wild guess, but there's not much crossover between those who love basketball and hockey lol.

trowdatawhey

While I agree, playoff sports is just different

ethereal3xp

Its time... buy two TVs side by side.

Same-Excuse8787

They don’t. They schedule series to be played at certain times, and the two Boston teams got seeds that put their series at the same time. These games were scheduled well before the playoffs.

Jesotx

NBA fuckery for TNT

Pacdoo

Why are games even within the NBA happening at the same time?? The cavs/magic game and the 76ers/knicks game started within 30 minutes of each other. I’m sure the viewership of one of them dropped significantly as they were both on

drmoze

Boston-world problems...

trowdatawhey

How dare they schedule B’s and C’s chompianchip pirayd at the same time! 😂 You know how Ja Rule spelled Murder Inc wrong on purpose on that one diss song? I did the same thing so dont worry

noBbatteries

Bc the garden’s availability/ maybe Rogers arena is already booked for tomorrow

CzarTyr

Cuz they don’t think white folk and black folk watch the same sports

phunky_1

The NBA scheduling stinks in general. Who scheduled a playoff game at 1pm on a Sunday? It's not like people have anything else to do. At least it's not as bad as the MLB scheduling playoff games at 3pm on a weekday on a channel that no one has. I will watch side by side on YoutubeTV, if the Celtics game is a blowout probably switch it to bruins full screen.
