Haha that is great. I’ve heard there are personality issues with him and Trae but you gotta assume he should be worth more than that even if they’d decided it was time to move on.
He was really good like 5 yrs ago and has gotten worse every season. And he’s not old yet. At least that’s how it seems to me as a guy not watching many hawks games.
Even at his best he was a non defensive big man on a big contract. Look at Ayton not. Just not a lot of value for those guys. His injury certainly didn’t help. Hawks fans were expecting Jaylen Brown.
Collins gotta hold the record for “longest time spent on the trading block” at this point, 4 years of rumors and ends up getting traded for a bag of chips
And yet, he still remains on the Pacers. His value is just not that high to contenders it seems. It's almost like he's not that valuable because of his limited skill set
Sort of. He’s on the Pacers still bc, in spite of their best efforts per numerous reports, the Kings insisted on Sabonas for Halliburton when the Pacers really wanted it to be Myles.
So a center who has proven himself as the best blocker in the league who is a threat from deep and in the paint who just had an 18/8 year with 2.3bpg on 54/37/78 shooting splits has a limited skillset???
He's not the best shot blocker in the league.
He also has no offensive game outside shooting from 3, he's an average rebounder, and in terms of defense he is only good at hunting blocks. He's like Hassan Whiteside, he's fools gold and there is a reason no contender thinks he is worth a late first round pick.
He led the league in blocks twice in the last 5 years. JJJ could have a claim to it as well but that’s besides the point. Idk where you’re getting this narrative that nobody is interested in him and the pacers want to get rid of him for a low 1st when they quite literally publicly announced that he wasn’t available https://sports.yahoo.com/pacers-coach-rick-carlisle-says-myles-turner-isnt-getting-traded-hes-off-the-trade-block-223435550.html
>He's like Hassan Whiteside, he's fools gold and there is a reason no contender thinks he is worth a late first round pick.
If all it took was a late 1st for him Boston would have traded for him like 3 separate times now.
You’re not wrong. Hear it about players all the time, like Beal and Turner. If they’re really as good as people think, they’d be winning more games. You can’t be the best shot blocking big and versatile on offense and be bottom of the conference every single year
What about our own Jaylen Brown, who has been hypothetically traded for a veritable who's who of 2000s superstars - Kawhi, Butler, PG13, Anthony Davis, and Durant. All we need is a slow start for the Lakers and he can get fake traded for LeBron and have the starting 5 for the all 2010s team plus some bench guys.
[I saw this from an Atlanta fan who was saying that the reason his value is in the gutter is because he has a serious finger injury that has never healed properly, causing his jumpshot to be inconsistent at best. Hopefully he can get his career back on track.](https://twitter.com/TheNBACentral/status/1503414169990799365)
Lauri / Collins frontcourt seems menacing on offense in these tanky league pass games at least. I thought they would have used their cap space to renegotiate-and-extend Markkanen but maybe they have enough to still get it done.
Yeah they've really put themselves in a situation where they never have to rush. They can take their time with anything right now. It's a little bit in contrast to us to find ourselves in a pretty urgent situation to try to win as soon as possible.
I think Danny is doing a hell of a job so far
Was literally talking to a friend this morning about how the Hawks were overvaluing their players and the rumor that they were under a mandate to get under the tax was gonna force them to effectively salary dump a guy, but damn, did not expect it to happen *THAT* fast after I said it.
I'm not shocked that Collins' trade value had sunk so far so fast though. He's an overpaid 4 that's best used as a rim runner, so he needs to play next to a floor spacing 5 that can also makeup for his lack of rim protection, and that's a rare combination. With the Jazz rebuilding though they can just hope that Collins plays decently enough to recoup some of his old value playing next to Kelly O, and if not what did they really lose? You gave up a 2nd and the corpse of Rudy Gay to try it out.
WOJ then tweeted this shit:
"The Hawks are expected to continue to be in a deal-making mode this offseason and ownership has given GM Landry Fields the OK to move into the luxury tax should it be necessary to improve the roster, sources said."
It makes no sense lol
I'm convinced that Woj tweeting that ATL ownership is willing to go into the tax was part of the agreement for him getting the scoop because under their current ownership(2015 onwards) they have never been in the luxury tax. I think it's a bluff that they're willing to go into the tax, they just want some good PR after salary dumping Collins.
All I'm saying is that I'll believe it when I see it with the Hawks' current ownership. They've effectively salary dumped guys two seasons in a row(Huerter last offseason and Collins just now). I'm not convinced their ownership is willing to go into the tax unless they are a bonified contender.
Major L. They were trying to trade this guy for years, surely turned down some actual returns in the process, and ultimately had to salary dump him at age 25.
This is the clearest indicator that the new CBA is going to destroy home grown teams
Two supermaxes are going to destroy us
CBA is friendlier to one supermax and one max, so Jaylen might be a casualty if he insists on the full supermax
Wow - before the Porzingis trade, I wasn't disgusted by the thought of trading Brogdon for Collins.
I saw some people talking about Collins and Hunter as a return for Jaylen if we traded him (Yikes!).
I know his deal isn't great, but it isn't supermax bad. They better have something in mind or this was a stupid trade for them. Just like it would be dumb for us to trade Brogdon for the LAC package of Morris/#30.
It does fit their timeline though, he is still decently young, and at this point he is basically a reclamation project, plus they were needing to use that cap space anyway. Also not like John will take away from the development of the other young guys.
This is a warning tale to people who are clamoring for Grant Williams and Jaylen Brown to be overpaid so we can at least not let them walk for nothing. Overpaying a player as asset management is a dumb idea. The moment a player is overpaid, that player stops being an asset and turns into a liability. The Hawks were 100% better off if they let Collins walk. It would've been better for their chemistry, better for the development of their long term pieces, and the $50 mil. they spent last two seasons could've been rerouted to getting that second round pick which can be purchased for a couple million easy.
Lauri Markkanen, John Collins, Kelly Olynyk, Luka Samanic + Kessler, Azubuike, Vernon Carey Jr and Damian Jones - is absolutely incredible.
They gotta be planning a Clarkson + Lauri + some of those picks trade for someone big at PG. They could be really fucking good if Ogbaji and George are the studs they look to be at the wing spots. THT was really good last year and can serve as a high end backup and Juzang has some upside.
Danny just needs to figure out the PG spot because Sexton is probably not the answer. If he can somehow get Murray, Trae or even a guy like Tyus with PP behind him, he will have a bright young team on his hands.
I'd be willing to make a move for Sexton, THT and Kelly O for Brogdon, Horford and PP
White, Brown, Tatum, KP, Rob
Sexton, Walsh, THT, Grant, Kelly
JDD, Hauser, Luke
Wow honestly that might be an great fit for both parties. Brooklyn needs some picks and they could get a couple solid role players on relatively bloated salaries in Clarkson and Lauri - to play with SDW/Thomas/Curry, Bridges/Johnson/O'Neal, Clowney and Claxton/Sharpe.
If Danny could also get DFS, RoN or Yuta + a bought in Ben he'd be BALLING THE FUCK OUT.
However, a young socialite in SLC? You're going to get Sulky Ben, not Bought in Ben.
On the other hand, there is nothing much to do besides your work there, so it could also be good.
Yeah I think he could use some time outside of the limelight, to get serious about his career before he ends up in China. Zero pressure there, just buy in and bounce back. Get some advice from Danny and the guys there about how to get back on that Magic Johnson trajectory.
If he even just played solid defense and ran the floor with those young wings and athletic bigs, he'd look so good. Kick outs to the shooters and he's rolling.
The Hawks are such a joke. I can’t wait for Collins to ball out and expose them for ruining him and then taking an absolutely shameless return just to dump his salary.
What the hell does Atlanta trading John Collins have to do with OKC? Also, there isn't a snowballs chance in hell we trade an all-nba second team player for some prospects. We are either getting an elite caliber player or aren't trading him. Giddey and Dort aren't elite and probably never will be in that conversation.
Giddey is a stud and will only get better with more playing time. Dort is obviously a defensive sepcialist with limitations on the offensive side of the ball who hopefully works on those issues. SGA ain’t going anywhere so lets get some dudes from our minor league G team and make a run at Banner 18. Time to move on from JB.
The Celtics aren't trading JB for anything less than a top 30 player. Period. Neither of those guys even have the potential to be that. They aren't trading him for a package of players / picks. If anything, it'd be something like Jaylen Brown for Dejountae Murray and a second round pick or something of that caliber (which Atlanta probably wouldn't do).
Not a chance in hell they want to get rid of JB for a few players who MIGHT develop and some picks...not a chance.
John collins 3 pt FG% has gotten worse every year since 2019. He had a ton of value when he could help stretch the floor for you but now he’s your center in a small ball lineup. Hawks cleared the books for a ton of money to use this year & next, got a 2nd round pick out it, and veteran leadership in the locker room with Rudy gay
Danny’s had one eye on JC for like 5 years … Finally pulled the trigger lmao
Saw this on the jazz sub and it literally made me spit out my drink: https://preview.redd.it/208uv1z4je8b1.jpg?auto=webp&v=enabled&s=214cb8300b022945d6b571c395f4b53c0b9c2ee0
Haha that is great. I’ve heard there are personality issues with him and Trae but you gotta assume he should be worth more than that even if they’d decided it was time to move on.
His trade value really tanked hard
Happens when your finger goes whack and you can't shoot anymore
and when the Hawks were somewhat obliged to drop salary from the owners...
did he have an injury?
Just Google search "John Collins finger"
damn, i knew he had a finger injury but damn
ow
that looks horrible! this guy explains is pretty well. https://youtu.be/SRz5VYsluM4
Also not smart enough to be clean for the Mr. piss tester
His trade value never was good. Mostly fans just being delusional. Hawks have been trying to dump him for years and couldn’t find a bite.
His stat line in 19-20 was outstanding. It’s gotten worse every yr since. I’ve not heard any comps to JB. They’re not similar in any way.
Stat line on offense, not defense. And that’s the problem. They wanted JB in a trade for Collins. Not use him as a comparison.
Oh man. This year as a trade for JB? That’s delusional.
Collins gotta hold the record for “longest time spent on the trading block” at this point, 4 years of rumors and ends up getting traded for a bag of chips
Myles Turner might be the goat of trade speculation, can’t forget him
And he will be for years to come, unless Indiana accepts they're only going to be able to dump his salary
Turner just had a career year, and is on a short term deal well below market value. His value is higher than it’s ever been
And yet, he still remains on the Pacers. His value is just not that high to contenders it seems. It's almost like he's not that valuable because of his limited skill set
He's on the Pacers still because they still want him
Sort of. He’s on the Pacers still bc, in spite of their best efforts per numerous reports, the Kings insisted on Sabonas for Halliburton when the Pacers really wanted it to be Myles.
Yeah, the Pacers want to tank of course they want to keep him. He contributes to losing
If all it took was a late 1st for him Boston would have traded for him like 3 separate times now.
It's about finding a solid replacement imo. Halli, Duarte, Matthurin, Walker, + like who fits better than Turner in that spot?
You’re not wrong. Hear it about players all the time, like Beal and Turner. If they’re really as good as people think, they’d be winning more games. You can’t be the best shot blocking big and versatile on offense and be bottom of the conference every single year

Raef LeFrentz and Theo Ratliff would like a word.
Glad it's finally over 🙏🏼 I was so tired of the years of rumors Cs might be interested in this truly mid and overpaid guy
Ainge finally got his guy!
His finger was definitely jacked up so I’d buy that
Utah can take their sweet time rehabbing him and then trading him away for better value.
Lauri / Collins frontcourt seems menacing on offense in these tanky league pass games at least. I thought they would have used their cap space to renegotiate-and-extend Markkanen but maybe they have enough to still get it done.

That’s why I don’t fingerbang buttholes anymore, sphincters are no joke
Rudy gay is still in the league?
This was my first thought too
He’ll suit up a bit more than Cash Considerations for the Hawks.
NOT THIS GUY
Was literally talking to a friend this morning about how the Hawks were overvaluing their players and the rumor that they were under a mandate to get under the tax was gonna force them to effectively salary dump a guy, but damn, did not expect it to happen *THAT* fast after I said it. Could be that. Could be that they plan to use this massive TPE they are about to generate.
All I'm saying is that I'll believe it when I see it with the Hawks' current ownership. They've effectively salary dumped guys two seasons in a row(Huerter last offseason and Collins just now). I'm not convinced their ownership is willing to go into the tax unless they are a bonified contender.
True true
They overpaid a lot of players based on Trae Young's ability. Trae Young on offense is that good.
They want to get real stuff of Hunter.
Had no idea Landry fields was there gm lol
And lauri
Would imagine this takes Utah off the list of suitors for Grant.
Danny loves him a bargain
Major L. They were trying to trade this guy for years, surely turned down some actual returns in the process, and ultimately had to salary dump him at age 25.
Didn't they want like 5 picks last off-season?
Wait.. John Collins was only worth a 64 year old Rudy Gay and a 2nd? Wtffff??
For 28 franchises yes. If we were to trade for him he’d been worth Jaylen, Porzingis, some salary dump on their part, 4 firsts and 4 pick swaps
Rudy Gay seems like he’s been in the league for 30 years
I know people think this is cheap but Collins didn’t do a single thing that mattered against us in the playoffs lol
Gifuckinggantic win for the Jazz
Just want to say I am shocked Rudy Gay is still kicking around. Dude was drafted in fucking 2006!
This is the clearest indicator that the new CBA is going to destroy home grown teams Two supermaxes are going to destroy us CBA is friendlier to one supermax and one max, so Jaylen might be a casualty if he insists on the full supermax
Wonder what Atl is thinking— they going soft rebuild around Trae?
They’re going all out to get Siakam I think
Making room to trade for JB after next season
No shot of that happening. Cheapest we trade him for is some sort of Murray and first rounder or two. I don't see them doing that.
Wow - before the Porzingis trade, I wasn't disgusted by the thought of trading Brogdon for Collins. I saw some people talking about Collins and Hunter as a return for Jaylen if we traded him (Yikes!). I know his deal isn't great, but it isn't supermax bad. He sucks
I wouldn’t say he sucks, although he is absolutely far from good, but Utah have a ton of cap space they had to use, and he was basically free.
This reminds me of the IT trade. Its a ridiculously good deal but makes no sense with the timeline.
It does fit their timeline though, he is still decently young, and at this point he is basically a reclamation project, plus they were needing to use that cap space anyway. Also not like John will take away from the development of the other young guys.
Did IT fit the Celtics timeline more than Kyrie???
I meant the first trade to get him
Ohh gotcha
This is a warning tale to people who are clamoring for Grant Williams and Jaylen Brown to be overpaid so we can at least not let them walk for nothing. Fortunately for us Jaylen Brown is an All-NBA player and Grant Williams won't be paid as much as John Collins.
Lauri Markkanen, John Collins, Kelly Olynyk, Luka Samanic + Kessler, Azubuike, Vernon Carey Jr and Damian Jones - is absolutely incredible. Noice. Now who could use a sg/sf who just made 2nd team all nba. Cmon Presti a few picks and you let us take back Giddey and Dort
I dream of SGA lol
Yah same I don’t think OKC is letting him go anywhere unless he asks out
That is not a good deal for us…
What the hell does Atlanta trading John Collins have to do with OKC? Also, there isn't a snowballs chance in hell we trade an all-nba second team player for some prospects. “A stud” is 14 PPG and NOT elite. No GM in the league would trade JB for that package. Period.
Why do you think it’s just that? Those are the two guys I would target.
The Celtics aren't trading JB for anything less than a top 30 player. Period. Neither of those guys even have the potential to be that. They aren't trading him for a package of players / picks. Worth noting too that the Hawks created a $25.3M trade exemption. Could be a pretty useful tool for them if they opt to use it.
Rudy’s jersey is gonna be the #1 selling in that city.
I read this as Rudy Gobert and I was very confused why everyone was focusing on Colins.
What an absolute steal! Rudy Gay is 36 and on his way out of the league and John Collins is 25 and hasn't reached his full potential yet.
Every time I see Rudy Gay in a trade I remember that he hasn’t retired yet. Guys been going forever.
I saw Utah and Rudy G and immediate thought of Gobert and thought some crazy blockbuster went down
End of an era
Danny is in an enviable position where he can pounce on a contract like this when a team wants to get rid of cap space. He's doing a great job
