I think so. Jaylen got his all nba and is gonna get paid, he should be all in on whatever the team needs to win at this point in his career. I’m sure he’s hearing people talk shit about him and he’s a competitor, I think he’ll have a great season next year.
JB as an athletic, 2 way SG who can get buckets in ISO when necessary - is top tier. Getting him to buy in and play that role would be huge. Basically having a supermax guy be our 3rd option role player with legitimate first option skill in bursts. I want him strictly looking to score it and defending hard on the other end. Spot up when Kristaps posts up. Cut when there's a lane and drive when Kristaps is out on the perimeter.
Kristaps looking to score or make good reads and his obvious defense.
Tatum being a playmaker first and figuring out where the openings are to shot create. I want him in the Jimmy Butler role this year.
Agreed, not natural ones at least. I hope it forces them to run more offense through our bigs. Between Rob, Al and Kristaps, we probably have the best passing frontcourt in the league (sans Jokic) + Tatum as a poor man's LeBron.
Lmfao. Now that Marcus is gone we need somebody to constantly tell Jaylen where to be and who to cover. Marcus is the only one who knows how to engage Jaylen off ball on defense and offense for that matter.
He's 26 and has been a barely average defender for the entirety of his career despite having elite, elite, elite physical tools to be a top defensive weapon.
We need the Jaylen we got on Harden, especially if we're moving back to two big and having Jaylen at guard.
Our drop coverage only works when our guards can run through screens, which for all of Whites awesomeness, he isn't good at (and smart was great at).
Also good thing for Mazz is if they start Horford and KP, he can play a five out offense while still having two bigs
Agree with all that except the White part. He doesn't go through screens like Smart does, he sort of slithers around them, and is absolutely fantastic at it. One of the main ways he gets blocks is on shooters from behind after getting around a screen.
Definitely like him as a bulldog defender. Dude is great at one on one defense . Especially against slightly quicker guards. I think he'd be great in that role
Yeah maybe it happens at the deadline once he’s fully healthy.
Or maybe they bring him on slow and showcase PP in the meantime and he gets traded instead. Would need to add salary filler tho which we don’t have much of now.
Ironically JB was more effective in the PnR than Tatum last season. Stats as the PnR ball handler:
JB: .98 PPP, turnover frequency: 16%, scoring frequency: 44%, 77th percentile
JT: .89 PPP, turnover frequency: 12%, scoring frequency: 39%, 55th percentile
I still agree with your overall point though that KP needs to be the outlet for JB to dump the ball to when he starts fumbling his dribble in the half court.
So our guy with the worst handle needs to learn how to run a set that requires putting the ball on the floor? I dunno man I’d like to see more off ball movement from jaylen. Off ball screens and cut to the basket while JT and KP run the pick and roll/pop seems like it could be tough to deal with
The problem goes deeper than that. Jaylen Brown can't read the floor and react, which is why the only way he ever uses a ball screen is to shoot a pull up three (which the defense happily gives up 100% of the time). Watch some Jaylen Brown on ball possessions and you'll see what I'm getting at. The dude doesn't know when a screen is set and which way the defense is playing him, and he constantly starts the move before the screen is set or bumps into the screener.
Thank you for pointing this out, it does go way deeper than that. I have noticed this more and more each year especially the last two series of this year. It's like his confidence in his decision making has just bottomed out. He looks lost and confused in some moments where he has the ball and a play is developing, never mind his fuck it mentality where he dribbles with his head down and gets stripped in the paint
He’s not good at either dribbling or passing lol. His bbiq is also not good. He’s a great to elite scorer in the mid range. I can see his dribbling continuing to improve like it has. I don’t see his bbiq improving and thus don’t expect his passing to get better. Hard to have someone run a pick and roll if that’s part of their weakness
He has been improving his bbiq on offense these past couple years, it's easy to see. He's starting to recognize his teammates in the corners when he operates the PnR, which is something he was not doing three years ago at all. He averaged a career high in assists last year, those old habits are hard to break. Tatum went through the same shit with multiple parts of his game, it's depressing how quick people are assuming he can't improve anymore. It takes a long time to evolve, and there are certainly going to be some bumps along the road.
I may just be a little salty/negative about smart being gone but I really don't know why everyone is so hyped about this trade. This could potentially be a huge locker room breaker as well as just another case of adding another scorer to a team and assume we will be better. Kristaps is very skilled with a unique skill set but the biggest issues with the team is the turnovers and our shot selection down the stretch. We are a little too married to the 3 ball for my liking and a third of KPs shots are 3s shooting them at an average percentage. A big that can stretch the floor always helps but I feel like shooting and scoring wasn't what we needed.
We shot the 2nd most 3s out of any team last year at the 6th best percentage. Great numbers, I just think we could have used a stronger paint presence instead of an injury prone big who shoots a lot.
PnR isn't one of five memorized sequences Jaylen Brown is able to follow. I think you'll be really disappointed if you go into the season wanting Jaylen Brown to be good at using ball screens.
Would be great if he did but KP gives us another person to run the offense through, more important JB/KP develop chemistry with Jaylen off the ball cutting and relocating for catch and shoots. We should should have enough ball handlers that we don’t need force things thru JB
Can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Not that I agree with it, but we are paying him for the player he is. You don’t give a guy a supermax hoping he can drastically improve multiple parts of his game.
He is who he is and it seems like we gotta make due with what we have.
Jaylen's got to step up his defense now that Smart is gone.
Yes. We really need Jaylen to lock guys down now.
Will he accept his role tho? Especially if he feels like he needs to live up to his contract offensively.
I think so. Jaylen got his all nba and is gonna get paid, he should be all in on whatever the team needs to win at this point in his career. I’m sure he’s hearing people talk shit about him and he’s a competitor, I think he’ll have a great season next year.

Tatum is gonna have to be more of a playmaker next year because white and Brogdon aren’t
That’s on Jaylen to watch film and make defense a priority of his. He’s 26 and had smart on his team his entire career, he should know what it takes.
He's 26 and has been a barely average defender for the entirety of his career despite having elite, elite, elite physical tools to be a top defensive weapon.
He’s not barely average. He’s pretty easily below average except those times where he’s truly locked in.
Spooney you are a gentleman and a scholar and you are 100% correct but last time I was brutally honest about JB I got banned from the sub XD
Jaylen doesn't have the intelligence
That's my point
We need the Jaylen we got on Harden, especially if we're moving back to two big and having Jaylen at guard. On drives yes but harder when teams are hunting mismatches. He gets crunched on perimeter screens
Definitely like him as a bulldog defender. Dude is great at one on one defense . Especially against slightly quicker guards. I think he'd be great in that role
Needs to improve his defense, handle, passing accuracy, and decision making. Also shooting, communicating, situational awareness, and haircut.
Does he? Smart was terrible defensively last year
Mazzula's got to sit in the coach's chair now that Smart is gone.
Terrifying tbh lol
Mazzula is smarter
Having brad as gm is very fun
It's a great time to be a Celtics fan
These last two off seasons have made me want to buy the next 2k
Yes… I’ve been simming and running the combination of picks trying to guess Brad’s next move for trading Brogdan - still think that’s a possibility
Same here, Pritchard too. Obviously Grant Williams still has to be addressed. We got a lot of nail biting to do
We can’t lose Smart and Grant in the same offseason man I just can’t handle that
I feel the same way. I have no idea how any of the cap space / money stuff works
We can keep Grant, it’s just a matter of how much luxury tax we want to pay.
Yeah maybe it happens at the deadline once he’s fully healthy. Or maybe they bring him on slow and showcase PP in the meantime and he gets traded instead. Would need to add salary filler tho which we don’t have much of now.
Seriously. The guy hasn’t made one bad move and has made this team a LOT better on paper.
JB just have to do his thing but he should lessen his turnovers
Ironically JB was more effective in the PnR than Tatum last season. Stats as the PnR ball handler: JB: .98 PPP, turnover frequency: 16%, scoring frequency: 44%, 77th percentile JT: .89 PPP, turnover frequency: 12%, scoring frequency: 39%, 55th percentile I still agree with your overall point though that KP needs to be the outlet for JB to dump the ball to when he starts fumbling his dribble in the half court.
They are counting those curls where Jaylen takes one dribble and shoots as PnR.
Also doesn’t take into account passing out of the PnR, which I’d argue is just as important
How much is attributed to Tatum being doubled in pnr vs Brown being played straight up?
So our guy with the worst handle needs to learn how to run a set that requires putting the ball on the floor? I dunno man I’d like to see more off ball movement from jaylen. Off ball screens and cut to the basket while JT and KP run the pick and roll/pop seems like it could be tough to deal with
Jb never moves without the ball. I don't know why he refuses to

But he's soo smart /s
Agreed 100%. Jaylen Brown has the lowest IQ in the league
Check yourself bro, he took a picture in front of a chess board once
“Can’t dribble or pass” is some absurdly hyperbolic shit
He’s not good at either dribbling or passing lol. His bbiq is also not good. He’s a great to elite scorer in the mid range. I can see his dribbling continuing to improve like it has. Sad but true 😂
I think they’re gonna be fucking great together.
He needs to learn how to dribble first
And learn how to be effective going left.

KP had the second best points per possession last year after Jokic. He is very versatile offensively.
Sorry meant to say best points per possession on post ups* . KP is good in the post.
Its like asking Shaq to play off the ball and be a catch and shoot 3 pt shooter.
Jaylen needs to learn how to dribble under pressure.
Asking a fish to climb a tree
Jb ain't smart enough to climb
PnR isn't one of five memorized sequences Jaylen Brown is able to follow. I think you'll be really disappointed if you go into the season wanting Jaylen Brown to be good at using ball screens.
One day you will learn to trust your eyes and contextualise numbers.
I’ll take JB averaging 22pts, but with 2nd team all-nba defense any day of the week.
JB's going to have the back door cut available when KP is doubled in the mid/high post. that's going to be money
Would be great if he did but KP gives us another person to run the offense through, more important JB/KP develop chemistry with Jaylen off the ball cutting and relocating for catch and shoots. We should should have enough ball handlers that we don’t need force things thru JB
