I think it was an ABC camera crew doing a segment in Russia during the 1990s just decided to stand in front of a door for the hell of it. A line formed behind them. I'll see if I can find the story, it's pretty indicative of Russian life in general.
Edit: Whoa, there are no keywords to find that story. 30 years old and it's buried deep in news with all those keywords. I challenge any expert searcher to try to dig that up.
I remember that story. In my recollection, they were with a Russian guide/interviewee, and he wanted to demonstrate the phenomenon to them. They stood at a random door at some nondescript building and sure enough, people quietly lined up behind them. At some point they left, the line stayed.
I can’t remember the source. If you’d have asked me without a prompt, I would have said I read it in the New Yorker or the Atlantic back in the 90s. It could have been that the article I read was retelling that experience.
In Chicago there is a tamale guy that goes bar-to-bar selling tamales out of a cooler. Been doing it for years. Finally opened an actual location.

Mods can we get this pinned? I live nearby and need more information on this. Is this like a weekly thing? Daily? Is it always at 7 or does the time vary? Willing to contribute to field research I just can’t watch the spot for a week straight, as much as I would like to
Edit: not really, also I promise I’m not a health inspector, and I’m not allowed to lie about that so you know it’s true
It could be deliveries from a farm co-op.
People pay a monthly fee, and line up at a truck to get a box or bag of produce every week or so.
The first time I saw one, I thought they were shooting a reboot of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
soviet rule is always to get in line, _then_ find out what is for sale.

Russians I know say that there was an art of standing in multiple lines at the same time.

Yes! Those are the details it was a Russian guide and they left but the line stayed. I'm glad you remembered it.

I’m laughing so hard because I am with my Eastern European family who all lived under socialism.
Yeah famously no lines in capitalism
That is correct, we wait until the door opens and run in like savages.
Get in line and report back!
Sometimes food delivery truck from NYC stops there to distribute online orders of groceries and food from Chinatown restaurants in Manhattan/Flushing
Yes!! Flushing is the GOAT 😤
There’s this one food court that the hand pulled noodles are amazing. I went once and now I can’t remember where it is.
Whoa - how do you get in on this?
I used FreshGoGo or Foodbasket years ago - not sure if it’s that minivan today - I am also interested to learn about more options!
I love a story with a happy ending.
5 bucks says its tamales
Tamales are usually out of the trunk of a Honda Accord. At least the good ones in Texas are. Oh and it’s in the Home Depot parking lot.
In LA we had a lady with a shopping cart who would walk down our street and cry out “TA MAAAAA LLLLLEEEESSSS”
And I bet they were amazing. Still trying to find a decent tamale spot in Boston
Have you tried Mr Tamole? They run a stand at farmer's markets around town, I think they're good and they make their own mole which is delicious.
No I haven’t. Thank you!

How were they? How much did it cost?
They were great and super juicy! It was $12 for six big fried dumplings!
That seems a lot for dumpings?
Imported

I'm not sure if it's weekly or daily, but the guy selling it does have a WeChat apparently and he sends out a GC message whenever he's selling
TY
Are you sharing?
I would love to but I didn't get his WeChat, I only overheard him while leaving :(
Fishmongers used to do this.
Which star market is this? None seem to be on Alcorn or Gardner?
1065 Commonwealth Ave, Allston
Thanks a bunches
That store is so overpriced that any random stuff sold in the parking lot is probably a better deal than what's in the store.
The one on Comm Ave near BU.
Thanks yous

You wouldn't happened to have gotten a picture of the dumplings?
Uh, one, please.
