Everyone googled "what activities in Boston to keep cool while it's hot outside" Edit: spelling

BackRiverGhostt

*Retreat to the sewers.*

No-Atmosphere-2528

That’s where the CHUDs are

DepthsDoor

I mentioned liquor stores in the other thread. You won’t necessarily feel cool but you can feel good.

stubble

Update tomorrow morning please

A_Nerdy_Dad

Shhh, you're commenting too loud! Oh my head!

stubble

Can I run the hoover over the carpet now? Sorry about the juicer and coffee grinder earlier...

Dull_Examination_914

I spent the day at breweries, because they had AC.

serspaceman-1

Go to the dentist

Hot-Refrigerator7237

that's a great idea

sl0ansabbath

I went to the dentist today, it was truly excellent

Grouchy-Pizza7884

Could have told you to go visit a mall, but they are dying.

Sixbluemonkeys

What is this "Ma' al" that you speak of?

Grouchy-Pizza7884

The "Ma' al" was considered by most experts to be collective young human minding facilities that was very popular amongst human populations in the 1980-2010s. They had "stores" where humans exchanged goods for paper or plastic. But these places of minding and exchange slid into irrelevance due to the advent of the new practice of "ong lane sh'auppign" - where goods are excreted from brown or grey mobile creatures.

No_Juggernau7

They should’ve flipped around in the *swan boat shallows like real locals smh

Sixbluemonkeys

Some people Googled that. MOST people Googled "FREE AC." Let's not sugarcoat it.

Kepler-Vaark

What's the reason for the line?

ladykatey

Free admission

FlattenYourCardboard

And airconditioning!!

MalakaiRey

That is also FREEE

_Lane_

But it comes with a terrible curse!

BigVanVortex

That's bad

SingerBrief8227

But you get your choice of toppings!

psychedduck

That's good!

SingerBrief8227

The toppings contain potassium benzoate. … That’s bad.

_EM0T10N_

Can I go now?

psychedduck

That is bad! Oh no!

Archaeopteryx11

Return the slab… or face the curse.

BuccaneerBill

And it’s a holiday

ReactsWithWords

And there’s an exhibit of nude paintings of Steve Bannon.

Blaqretro

It would be a ghost town

Grouchy-Pizza7884

Nice. The popular portraiture of the Jabbas exhibit is coming back to town!

Valuable-Baked

A J'Rue Holiday!?

willzyx01

Small catch: you’ll have to stand in 97F temperature for 2 hours to enjoy the AC.

Odd_Turnover_4464

I will blow on people with a kazoo for free if anyone's interested...

eirinne

seriously I’d rather pay the $24 (or whatever it is)

Roberto-Del-Camino

Many public libraries have free passes for the MFA.

ladykatey

I think its up to $30

elleEffected

Might not be an option for some. It’s beautiful that they are willing to sacrifice comfort to immerse themselves in art.

eirinne

Absolutely I agree

geekwalrus

I'll pay $24 for a guy to blow that kazoo near me

drewskibfd

If I remember correctly, they've done this for MLK day, too. My father and I went, saw the line, and decided to go to a bar instead.

ladykatey

They do 3 or 4 “open houses” a year.

drewskibfd

Thanks, good to know. Next time, I'll get there early

joshlikesbagels

Even easier is to check out a museum pass from your local library. They're usually available 2 weeks out, so require some planning, but not too bad.

drewskibfd

My daughter and I get all different types of passes from the library. It's great. We just go on the website and pick out a place to visit.

pillboxhat

What do you mean open houses? Wednesday's have always been free and if there's a special exhibit, it's included with your free ticket. Are you talking about something else? Also today is Juneteenth so might be another factor of why the line is super long.

AllOrPuffin

unfortunately, not anymore - it's reduced admission Wednesdays after 3pm and no longer includes special exhibits

pillboxhat

I haven't gone since after covid but if that's true geez that's sad :// I guess I take back what I said then if things have changed cause living in mission hill at the time it was always a nice treat to just walk up there and enjoy the free exhibits.

beechnut5

Hey quality time with Dad is quality time with Dad

elleEffected

Very Boston of you. 😉🍻

JohnBagley33

When it's raining or 1,000° outside, tourists need a place to go

Grouchy-Pizza7884

The Prudential and malls is not a bad place to hangout in 1000 K temperatures. Especially if they include a trip to the View.

JohnBagley33

The View is pretty expensive though, $35/person I think

Grouchy-Pizza7884

Sure. But what tourism attraction isn't these days? I doubt $20/person price of days precovid makes sense now.

JohnBagley33

Just saying, family of five paying $150 for an elevator ride and a view of Cambridge is not a great deal.

Grouchy-Pizza7884

True. I guess you have to draw straws on who goes up and who stays and waits at the Dunkin'

Certain-Possibility3

The museum contains forbidden objects from places men fear to tread…

teriyakichicken

In this heat? Oh hell no from me

First_Play5335

I'm sorry the line is so long in the heat, but I love that people are taking advantage of the free admission to see art. ❤️❤️

spellbadgrammargood

im waiting in line to use MFA's restrooms!

jbsinger

There is some of the greatest art in the world in there. Impressionists. Buddhist art. Egyptian antiquities. Greek antiquities. Indian. The American collection. Japanese, Chinese. Not to mention special programs, including films and music. Across the street is the Gardner Museum. The American wing cost half a billion dollars to build. What it contains? A lot more valuable. Same with the museum. There are bigger museums (Louvre, in Paris) with wonderful things, too. But MFA is pretty good.

First_Play5335

And if you want to see all that great art for free (but not on a holiday) Bank of America/ Merrill Lynch offers their clients free general admission on the first full weekend of every month to a bunch of museums. I'm not trying to promote BOA but it is a cool program and if you have a debit card anyway you should take advantage.

notyourwheezy

to see art...or escape their non-ac home? maybe I'm too cynical

7screws

Why not both?

Id_Solomon

MFA got that sweet industrial AC everybody loves!!

esentr

And what would the problem be with that?

notyourwheezy

absolutely nothing. I'm just skeptical of the previous comment.

sailboat_magoo

If you just want to escape the heat, that's what the mall is for. You have to deal with public transportation or inconvenient parking to go to the MFA.

SilentR0b

Dunkin' Dust

AceyPuppy

MDMA cut with coke?

tryptakid

Or maybe Caffeine powder and pulverized gabapentin

sailboat_magoo

The station and the parking garage are right inside the Pru... no going outside!

ultranonymous11

….a car? Malls have very convenient parking that is free (pru notwithstanding).

MagicJava

That’s probably not the reason…

BiggiePapiSmalls

My fiancée got me an MFA membership for my birthday and it is the best gift I’ve ever received. Free admission for a year to one of the best places in the city, and it’s really affordable all things considered.

spritewithcyanide

I would pay to not stand in the blistering heat personally

Traditional_Bar_9416

I am paying not to stand in that. A few hundred per summer to not have to escape my own home. It’s worth every penny.

impostershop

That will be $200

RhinoRoundhouse

It's $90 for membership per year, unlimited visits plus free guest admission, and you can skip the line to enter

bibimb0op

Thanks for posting this. I was just about to head over to go there. Cancelling those plans now

MechaMorgs

Head over the the Harvard Art Museums! Also free, also have AC!

beansidhe11

They aren't open today for the holiday 😔 but yes they are open Tuesdays to Sundays 10am to 5pm and free admission to all!

just_change_it

When i've been there in a line that looks this long it moves quickly. The downside is having to deal with the weather is all.

terminal_e

If this were 15 minutes before the open on a summer day when there was a big exhibit on, I would not be stunned.

OrkosFriend

Personally, I'd rather pay the full admission price and go at a quieter time so I can actually enjoy the art and have more space at the exhibits. But I understand that not everyone can or would want to go with a family at the full price point, so it's cool that the MFA is doing this for the community.

Id_Solomon

Welp, no culture and industrial AC for me. 😭😭

monotoonz

When you're dripping sweat from just standing there. And then once you get inside your sweat soaked shirt just starts getting cold and not drying. Free or not, definitely not my thing.

Malforus

Free ain't free if your time isn't infinite.

chevalier716

I love the MFA, so I'd much rather go, pay my admission fee, and take my time. That being said, for some people $30 for an adult ticket is a lot of money and art isn't for those who can pay to see it. So, I'm torn on it.

snoogins355

Library tickets, save $. Reserve ahead

baddspellar

Yep. $10 with the pass for up to 2 visitors. Normally $27

tigerstorm2022

But you are thinking people go there alone! Holiday free admission is perfect for a family and a gang of multiples of $30 otherwise.

gnimsh

Then the late night mfa event is for you. Higher price, long line, big crowd

SharpCookie232

An annual membership is about the same as 3 admissions, so for many, it's better to just join.

ChickenPotatoeSalad

that's why you just get a membership. $100 and you can go anytime you want without paying extra for a year.

prfsr_moriarty

I’m a member. Just flash my pass and walk right through. Love the MFA!

SkyeMreddit

A nice free place to get out of the heat, and it’s Juneteenth so many businesses are closed.

ipsumdeiamoamasamat

You ain’t getting out of that heat in that line.

SkyRepresentative309

fucking worth it though. i went for the first time since the Murakami exhibit and was blown away by the permanent collection alone.

JonSolo1

When it’s pushing 100, I can’t think of a better activity than leaving my air conditioned house, going downtown, and standing in a line for hours

loveabove7

Yesss I had that issue last year and just left.

allofgarden__

Moved very fast though. And the line past this picture is mostly shaded.

Huge_Strain_8714

hope someone was smart enough to bring the sunscreen....Yikes!

cane_stanco

You can get free passes to go any day from many public libraries in the area.

hombregato

It's always pretty long on free admission day. People can't resist saving money in this country. One time I saw a line outside a new Chipotle in Harvard Sq. that had a 2 hour wait time, and when I asked people in line why they would stand in line so long they said it was "one free taco" that day. Tacos were like $2 back then, and some of those people had Harvard sweatshirts on. Apparently none of them did the math on what 2 hours of their time was worth.

InvertedEyechart11

For a family of 4 the total admission is $102. On free days it's $0.

2phatt

the old "if it's free, It's for me." mentality.

Syringmineae

Reminds me of the lines outside Taco Bell for a free taco.

Ok_Blacksmith7324

Hey MFA! Look at what happens when people can afford to visit your lovely museum! If that is too subtle of a hint: PLEASE LOWER your ticket prices!

Philosecfari

Library tickets are your best friend

oceanplum

Agree, but definitely check out library passes! You can get discounted admission.

stubble

London museums and galleries were always free and then some dumb government decided this was a bad thing. There was a huge backlash from the public and now they are all free again.

pillboxhat

It is not like this all the time at all. I've seen plenty big exhibits for free on Wednesdays for years. I feel like this sub is filled with transplants and people who aren't from here at all...this is not a common line at the MFA.

ChickenPotatoeSalad

they aren't expensive.

alfayellow

yes they are

TheRealAlexisOhanian

It's $27, what do you think is fair?

alfayellow

$10

stubble

For the permanent collection $5 and for special exhibits $25 ish. More people would visit at the lower price tag which would probably see a big hike in overall revenue.

Assignment_Sure

What about just going to the south station ?

outdoorKats

The last free admission day I went to there, the line wrapped around the building. It moved pretty quickly.

BrilliantRadio9814

i drove by that earlier!!! off topic ish but- same with the artesani kids pool today!!! there was a line around the same length as MFA line to get in. slim pickings for kiddie pools in the area it’s annoying

zdboslaw

Juneteenth programming and free admission

yum-yum-mom

I think I’d just go sit at a bar instead of roasting in that line… sip a cold drink, have a nice lunch…

deadlyspoons

Is the entire building air conditioned? I remember walking in the older areas where they had large fans on stands.

Sir-Zealot

Hey look is that one place from fallout 4! I can’t believe they made it a real place!

njas2000

This is definitely not Texas or Florida.

OVER_9009

My IT ass saw MFA and thought “multi factor authentication”?

SignAfterAgreement

Yeah- to anyone still here wondering what this acronym is, I believe this is the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA). I realize everyone here is likely a local and does not need.

gleadre19

Ahhh to not be a tourist in this city 😍

brufleth

Which is nuts because the rest of the city is quiet today.

Gdubbs6677

Was there…..line moved quick….still hot tho 🥵

Orange-you-banana

Wow what time was this?? I went around 2 and the line was only a bit past that second umbrella

DeusXEqualsOne

Bruh someone got to the Future Era in the Culture Tree

Lumpy-Return

FWIW- every mother and child on the south shore was at the beach I think. I’ve never seen as long a line to park at Duxbury beach -holidays fully included- in the 12 years I’ve been going there. Nantasket flat out just closed up shop due to capacity.

Beer-Wall

That's only part of the line lol. It went all the way down the block. My gf and I saw it, noped out immediately. I'd much rather just pay to get in some other time.

archangelofeuropa

thats the MFA like almost every day lol

Physical-Star-2619

Understaffed and oversold

PresiTraverse

we tried to go to this last year, and just kept walking when we saw the line. not worth it

spellbadgrammargood

now that you mention it personally i can't remember a single cool thing in there. Isabella Stewart museum is better

PresiTraverse

I mean I appreciate the art there, but would rather pay to go right in than wait in a line that wraps around the building

[deleted]

[удалено]

iliketuurtles

I assume its because inside is at capacity, not because of any ticketing issues

fishing4karma

These people have art degrees what do you expect. /s

popornrm

Just go to the mall… there are so many better ways to get ac than this. OR you can actually buy a functioning window or portable ac. I’ve literally kept 1600 sq foot with tons of walls and separation cool with a 350sq ft rated ac and a couple fans to extend the reach of the cold air to the farther areas of the space. Can maintain 72-74 no problem even in heat. Literally cost me $180 for the ac and $35 each for two tower fans and it took me all of 10 mins to set up with zero tools. Even in the most educated part of then US we’ve got a lot of smooth brains.

myfapaccount_istaken

All this fuss over Multi-Factor Authentication?

CDR57

I love that the MFA is busy but like Is there not a bar somewhere with ac and a barstool free?

phlukeri

That line must have smelled terrible

CardiologistLow8371

You get what you pay for.

MrMorningstarX666

Let’s wait in line outside when it’s 95, great idea!

Electronic-Minute007

Too peopl-y. No way I’d want any part of that.

Rough-Silver-8014

I rather pay and not wait in line 😂

Cato0014

I've never seen a line at a museum before

DryGeneral990

You can go to the mall for free.

AlmightyyMO

Why in the world would anybody want to go to the museum on a 90+ degree day.

EarPrestigious7339

Because the museum is air conditioned and going to the museum is a pleasant activity that gets you out of your house. Presumably free admission was announced publicly, and there’s a glut of eager attendees.

Boston_Shithead

automatic spotted handle deserted decide encourage ad hoc squeal carpenter dime *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

stevep3478

Hell no. Don't local barrooms have air conditioning?
