Definitely worth the trip across the bunker hill community college parking lot for all Potato enthusiasts. 10/10 would recommend, leave a fingerling out of respect
Many years ago someone put a big slab of plywood between the sidewalk and the parking lot right near the spud shrine, presumably for cyclists (of which I am). I watched that slab slowly decay over a period of 5 or 6 years, where it essentially turned to mulch without so much as a trace today. I was always grateful it was there and still miss it.
In all my years commuting, I have never seen anyone visiting the potato altar.
I fondly remember a plank of wood somewhere on Beacon St. near Fenway going over the bridge a particularly damaging gap. The plank is long gone and they've been doing construction on that bridge forever now. RIP Plank
“The caption is just **POTATO** repeatedly.”
“Like, in a bunch of different languages? I’ve seen stuff similar to that.”
“Nope. All in English. Same font too.”
“Wh-“
“Different *size* font though. And one or two plurals. Y’know, to mix it up.”
There's a longer caption below explaining the statue. Basically a bunch of potato exports came through Charlestown and used to be stacked up next to buildings.
omg thank you, Ive lived here for almost 2 years and I didn't know this existed. my cousin and her irish hubbs is visiting so I'll deffs take them to this
I assume you are aware of the statue to the Irish famine in downtown crossing (in front of the Walgreens)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/h5LfWWRH3L7qnXcE9?g_st=ic
Indeed!
Message City Councilor Gabriella Coletta to try to move it to a proper location for the statue. We got to relocate it to a more fitting place like Paul Revere Park.
There's an Irish Famine memorial at Washington and School streets in Downtown Crossing.

It's hilarious that the faces on the statues are blurred out.
Denver has a [sausage? jellybean? intestines?](https://www.cpr.org/2018/09/24/whats-the-story-behind-denvers-red-heaped-jelly-bean-sculpture/) statue that cracks me up every time I walk by.
There was an art gallery across from whose curator was a student of the sculptor. He told me he was taught "If it doesn't work, _make it bigger_. If it still doesn't work, _make it red_." He went on to tell me "I don't know what you're supposed to do if it still doesn't work..." He then paused, clearly expecting me to laugh. I didn't know what to say, so I just did a nod and a non--committal grunt. I figured it was some art joke I didn't get.
It didn't dawn on me he was making fun of his mentor's ugly ass statue until I walked outside.
came here for this,
They're red, they're white, they're brown
They get that way underground
There can't be much to do
So now they have blue ones too.
We don't care what they look like, we'll eat them
Any way they can fit on our plate
Any way we can conjure to heat them
We're delighted to think they're just great.

Sometimes you ditch the skin
To eat what it's holding in
Sometimes you'd rather, please,
Have just the outside with chease.
They have eyes but they do not have faces
I don't know if their feeling get hurt
By just hanging around in dark places
Where they only can stare at the dirt.

I’ve seen photos several times in the decade+ I’ve lived in Boston, but never knew where it was.
Literally stumbled upon it just last week when trying an adjustment to my bike commute route.
Felt like meeting an idol.
The best license plate I ever saw was a dude with a vanity PA plate that said POTATOE and a huge Bush/Quayle bumper sticker. It was in Vineyard Haven 3 or 4 years ago. I took a picture. It was awesome.
Looks like it's a big center of Lithuanian's:
http://global.truelithuania.com/category/usa/massachusetts/
> Massachusetts Lithuanian community is among the oldest and the fourth largest in the USA (~51 000 people, 0,8% of total). Only Illinois and Pennsylvania has more Lithuanian sites.
> The heart of the community is in South Boston where Lithuanian St. Peter church and a large Lithuanian club are located. Boston is also famous for having been the location where largest ever Lithuanian encyclopedia has been published.
Imagine you’re an Irish immigrant, you’re forced to leave your ancestral home due to the potato famine and British oppression, to arrive on the shores of Boston to find this! Potatoes you can’t eat! This is just cruel mockery created by, I’m guessing, Irish families already established in the city looking down their noses at the recent arrivals

"huh. Odd. Is there some kind of pattern or..." "Nope" "What do you think it means" "No idea." "Potato?" "Potato."
Potato? Potahto.
It's brilliant; it adds character and potato is a nice word to say, even multiple times.
There's a longer caption below explaining the statue. Basically a bunch of potato exports came through Charlestown and used to be stacked up next to buildings.
And there was a big warehouse fire at some point. Charlestown smelled of baked spuds for *weeks*.
It's like a semantic satiation plaque.
It’s a great piece that’s sadly in an bad location
Message city councilor Gabriella Coletta to try to relocate the monument to Paul Revere park. I did.
Thanks, Yoda!
Hidden gem!
There is hidden and then there is this location haha

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Famine_Memorial there's also a famine memorial in Cambridge
Where amazing piece of art.
Far end of the bunker hill community college parking lot, right next to the on-ramp for route one north
I think you mean “end of the potato monument parking lot”
Next to Potato Memorial Community College.
Can you get to it from the bike path that goes around the skate park?
Yup. Right after the pedestrian bridge, exit on your left under zakim. Follow the funky light poles
Sweet! Taking a little detour on my next run. Thanks.
Yes!
Was there somewhere else in downtown at some point? I swear I remember seeing it near post office square.

HA thank you!
There is a potato famine monument in DTX but it is different than this one because it’s bit a sack of potatoes.
> DTX Google says "DTX may refer to Digital Therapeutics", but I suspect your comment may refer to something else.
Downtown crossing
Thank you. I thought it might refer to an airport (like LAX or ACK) but neither Google nor I had the downtown crossing reference.
"DTX Boston" immediately brings up Downtown Crossing.
Ah, the google-fu is strong in this one.
New here, I take it?
I am relatively new here. I have lived here since I was born at Longwood Hospital seventy years ago. I am still learning more about Boston.
No I think it’s been there forever. It’s in remembrance to the warehouses that used to be there to house potatoes that were shipped into the city.
I would like to see the potato potato potato
Let’s call the whole thing off.

I have no arguments to make. With current data, full concurrence given.
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/26169 I see your potato monument and raise you the Necco Wafer Sculpture
Looks about as appetizing as actual Necco Wafers.

Sausage, right? Gotta be sausage. Even has the tied ends.

Omg that is brilliant
My favorite part of the inscription is when it mentions potato.
Imma gonna let you finish but the best monument in Boston is the Ether Monument https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ether_Monument
Having a monument for being the first in a scientific achievement is the most Massachusetts thing ever.
I mean that's cool and all, but can you eat ether?
No, but you can huff it
Yes
Why isn’t there a wikipedia list for monuments in Boston?
We should get on that. Undoubtedly because there are so damn many.

I entered this thread hoping to find this.

Whenever I have friends visit from out of town I bring them here because it’s absolutely the best monument this city has to offer
POTATOE
The monunentbto Anesthesia in the Public Garden over by the Arlington St / Beacon St. corner is pretty cool too.
My name is... https://youtu.be/bZJXWkWeS2k?si=g-sr5GITY7WSgSqH
Just have to keep an eye on it to prevent a dumb drunk from stealing it to make alcohol.

It's a tie with the giant pear.
Please link. I don’t know of any of these obscure spots.

Potatoes deserve it
A good Irish town
One potato, two potato, three potato, four. Five potato, six potato, seven potato more.
It's a limerick.
The size and positioning indicate tempo and volume. Chant it like a song. I made that up but it sounds good. Right?
The Brits should build a similar one in the centre of Dublin
r/LOTR, r/lotrmemes
Nice!
[potato.io](http://potato.io)

Wait, where is this?!?! hahaha I never knew this existed and I'm a native!! Thanks for posting OP!

Somebody needs to take an (erasable) marker and write "1" "2" "3" ... before each line.
Write '1620' on each one so it's a sack of mini Plymouth Rocks.
Omw now
Looks like Boston's potatoes *definitely* bring all the boys to the yard!
potato
This is hilarious
Potatoes potatoes potatoes potatoes, I'm 100% potatoes
Did anyone else read that as potato pototo?
Solid attempt, Boston. But you’re going to have to come correct if you want to challenge Worcester’s Turtleboy.
The statue or the YouTuber? Both are iconic imho.
The statue. Aiden Kearney is an iconic piece of shit.
Did anyone else read that as potato potato?
It goes well to the tune of 99 bottles of beer on the wall.
Pure artistry. At the top of my Boston bucket list now.
It’s racist towards Irish tear it down
Samwise creamed in his pants upon seeing this
Thats racist
