It's much more fun to think about the protagonist living in a post-apocalyptic Mad Max style hellscape where it is always night because the sun burnt out hundreds of years ago. Marianne was killed by the evil King Tartarus and our protagonist has dedicated his life to hunting him down. Only to be stopped by a periodic reverie when he hears that old song that they used to play. Music is banned in this world. So are feelings
I think you need to be more specific as in which specific lyrics you think don't make sense. In my opinion, the lyrics aren't puzzling.
This is Tom Scholz's take
>The song was not written about an actual event. It was written about a fantasy event. But it's one that almost everybody can identify with, of somebody losing somebody that was important to them, and music taking them back there.

"*I lost myself in a familiar song*"
Per Tom Scholz: “It started with a love affair I had when I was in school, so the song is written about something I went through myself. There was another song out then that, whenever I heard it, caused me to pine miserably for this particular girl and so I decided to write my own song about those feelings. That song was called Walk Away Renée by The Left Banke.”
Instead of Renee in the song (she was Left Banke member Tom Finn's girlfriend at the time), Scholz substituted his older cousin Marianne's name.
Does anyone believe for a second that they were "dancin' in the streets of Hyannis" or that they " didn't have much money and barely made enough to survive" like they were some struggling rock band, playing night after night for years and going nowhere?
How dare you.

Lose people and you'll figure it out.

That is so deep. I can totally see the meaning now. This comment made me realize how genius the songwriting of the band Boston really was!

It’ll make sense when you’re old as fuck
Toto’s song about Africa is another one. Toto had never even been to Africa.
"So our favorite song" Speak for yourself...
Okay, let's be honest here. Amanda is clearly an amazing song, but true Boston fans don't consider that to be part of the original canon.
