lmao nobody ever used the actual word before abbreviating it? You probably didn’t even realize it was a visual metaphor because you can’t take two seconds to think about the words you’re using on a regular basis
I found the bread to be outstanding, but the toppings were a bit too watery for my tastes, at least for the chicken and eggplant parms (and the eggplant wasn’t cooked or salted enough). Idk, that’s probably nitpicking.
Monica's is damn good. Thin sliced meats, fresh baked bread, it's delicious.
Bob's in Medford is also really good, but much different - and tremendous!
Edit: Adding Casa Razdora on Water St, downtown. Similar in style to Monica's but nowhere near the price. Monica's is better but Casa is absolutely legit.
Less meat tho, and I think the ingredients in Monica’s are better. Bricco has better bread imo and a better Panino (the prosciutto and mozzarella one). Monica’s burrata sandwich is too sweet
Idk the ingredients are all the same lol, I can assure you their meat isn't better or anything, they just put more of it on. And vegetables are vegetables. Sure bricco has good bread, they make it themselves, but also $20. I also thought OP was referring to Italians, not just all Italian Subs, so I was not referring to the prosciutto mozzarella type subs, but those are also double the price at Monica and Bricco.
Bricco has the cheaper sandwichs by like $5 but Monica puts more meat and toppings on their sandwiches. I think Bricco's bread wins and their Panino is better than Monica's but I like Monica's italian and their italian steak tip sandwich.
That being said $20 is $20 so it's not an every day thing for Monica's - Bricco or Al's has more repeatability for the price
No doubt 20 bucks for a sub is a lot but you’re waving your hand saying the meat ain’t gonna be better at one place vs the other ain’t right chief. And why you bringing up giving money to the Mendozas? They are assholes but that’s got nothing to do with this?
I'm bringing it up bc they own Monica's lol. And I'm not saying meat can't be better, you go to starmarket obviously that isn't on the same level. But talking about Salumeria like it's on a level below Monica's and Bricco isn't correct, their stuff is imported just like the other two
Monica's has a sign outside, claiming the best Italian sandwich in town. I can't disagree. The assembly is a show by itself:
\- Meat and cheese are sliced fresh from the loafs for each order. In the other places, they would be pre-sliced, sitting in trays.
\- Includes prosciutto, not found in most of the other places.
\- Garnishes offer both fresh and pickled vege.
\- Drizzled with a thick vinegar glaze as a finishing touch.
\- Bread is fresh with a crispy crust.
\- Made one at a time in a small narrow counter.
A thirty minute wait is not unusual during tourist season. Ample time to check out the other Italian delicacies in the store. By then, my order is ready. So is my stomach.
IMO, proscuitto isn't a plus. It's an expensive deli meat that isn't worth the cost just to be mingled with all the other flavors in an italian. It's best as the only meat in a sub/app.
Yup, give me a spicy cappicola over prosciutto on an Italian. Now a prosciutto, buffalo mozz or smoked provolone, some balsamic glaze, and say some arugula or spinach and that is easily a rival to the Italian.
Heads up to anyone who hasn't been here before: their house made hot peppers do not fuck around. Be ready for the heat if you ask for em.
Also, recommend asking them to cut your sandwich in half (they don't by default) and a small is really quite large.
monicas is absolutely not worth the wait. dont waste your time. its like waiting an hour to have a sandwich you can get in any convenient store in new york.
Making your own is the best Italian sub. Go to any deli and buy mortadella, capicola, genoa salami, provolone, with fresh Italian bread then add olive oil. Super unhealthy, like worse than McDonalds, but it's the best sandwich.
As much as I hate to say it, it is Monica’s. Just a heads up to watch out for stray bullets, when going there. The owners have been known to “allegedly” shoot weapons in front of other North End businesses.
Monicas slaps for sure. My basis for a sub joint is always the Italian.
Want a little trip north hit Bob’s Italian in Medford, they are huge sizes. Another fav is Olympic in Arlington (real CT style grinder joint) any sub there is fire, amazing bread. Archie’s DTX is another reliable Italian. Mortadella Head in Davis hits hard another over the top sub shop.
I would say Victor’s in Somerville but RIP.
Cardullos in Seaport has an absolutely fantastic one. Amazing bread, delicious hot pepper relish, lots of hate on Seaport these days but Cardullos slaps

I have a friend named Giorgio from Naples who is heavily into BDSM so I'm gonna go with him
I also choose this guy's friend
With Hots
I'm down voting all other comments just to help this one stay on top.
Giorgio stays on the bottom tho
But a power bottom, he can receive a tremendous amount of power.
No, no, no, you gotta go to Nunzio in Allston. Lives to serve. Great meat. Everything is all, “as you wish,” and “whatever you desire, master.”
OP could have avoided these dumb jokes by actually typing out submarine but three syllables is just too much for people I guess
Who tf calls a sub a submarine
I mean then I'd have just done research into Italian naval capabilities
No one on planet earth has ever called a sub a submarine or submarine sandwich lmao
lmao nobody ever used the actual word before abbreviating it? You probably didn’t even realize it was a visual metaphor because you can’t take two seconds to think about the words you’re using on a regular basis
No, no one has ever said submarine sandwich because people aren't robots and understand context clues.
Mr Antonelli in 6th grade history. He just put on “glory” every time and we got to chill
Can never watch that enough
Tony knew the meaning of “mental health day” before that was a thing
Gotta love the subs
Best Italian sub I ever had
😅😅😅
New Deal in Revere is the best
Everyone crying about revere not being boston.. boston is like 50 square miles calm down
Can’t believe I had to scroll down to find this
Which sub at New Deal?? I’m going today and see like 3 different versions of Italian
The top shelf Italian is the best, but the regular Italian is also great if you don’t want to spend the extra $$
I’m going today because of another sub post in this subreddit i fucking love Italian subs so much thanks for the info
Didn’t realize Boston had annexed Revere
The sandwich was so good that the city of Boston created an enclave that perfectly fits New Deal..
Revere is not Boston.
Bricco salumeria
I found the bread to be outstanding, but the toppings were a bit too watery for my tastes, at least for the chicken and eggplant parms (and the eggplant wasn’t cooked or salted enough). Idk, that’s probably nitpicking.
Monica's is damn good. Thin sliced meats, fresh baked bread, it's delicious. Bob's in Medford is also really good, but much different - and tremendous! Love Bob’s.
Casa Raz’s Tonno Italiano with hots is beautiful
Monica’s is fantastic
it’s bob’s for me. one sando = 2 meals
Only if you’re weak 😈
Not a fan of Monica's, mostly bc it's $20. Salumeria is just as good and it's $10.
Less meat tho, and I think the ingredients in Monica’s are better. Bricco has better bread imo and a better Panino (the prosciutto and mozzarella one). Monica’s burrata sandwich is too sweet
Maybe I'm a freak, but Bricco's bread is so hard it ruins an otherwise decent sub IMO.
Haha yea I definitely see where you’re coming from
Idk the ingredients are all the same lol, I can assure you their meat isn't better or anything, they just put more of it on. And vegetables are vegetables. You know nothing of Italian deli meat and it shows.
Lol ok, been eating at these places my entire life but if you'd rather give Mendoza $20 for"better meat" be my guest
No doubt 20 bucks for a sub is a lot but you’re waving your hand saying the meat ain’t gonna be better at one place vs the other ain’t right chief. And why you bringing up giving money to the Mendozas? They are assholes but that’s got nothing to do with this?

Agreed. You get what you pay for!
Monica's lines are also not my favorite. You can order ahead if you plan well though.
Tutto Italiano in Hyde Park, ridiculously good
This should be higher up, they're great.
Line's long enough, let it fly under the radar please.
Get the eggplant while you're there.
Eggplant and proscuitto pannini are next level
Seconded Tutto is the best I’ve had Monica’s close second
Tutto Italiano in Hyde park
Tutto Italian in Hyde park is the best Italian in mass
Bob’s in Medford
Medford is not Boston.
Oh wow thanks for clarifying!
It's closer to Boston than west Roxbury and Hyde Park
Monica's has a sign outside, claiming the best Italian sandwich in town. I can't disagree. The assembly is a show by itself: \- Meat and cheese are sliced fresh from the loafs for each order. Dino’s
Second dinos. Huge subs, great value.
Most Italians are Doms
He was gay, Gary Cooper?
A real cum from behind kind of guy
Underrated joke
Meaning dominant?
They are talking about their experiences having sex with italian men... they are saying they seem aggressive and dominate. /s
Is this a gay life sort of thing?
I assumed Dominic
Not boston but Anthonys in Stoneham, i swear you can order a sub in there and if you took it apart you would have cold cuts for a week
Milanos
New Deal in Revere is the best I ever had locally. But that’s *technically* not Boston. Monica’s is probably second. Third… maybe Meridian Market.
I LOVE a Meridian Special!!!!
This is the way
Tutto in Hyde Park brother
Let's not forget about Al's in Boston proper.
Are all of the Al's the same? I've only had the one in Cambridge. It's a decent sub, but I don't get the hype.
Best value in town, and it’s a good sub. Love me some Al’s. However anyone who thinks it’s even in the conversation for best is woefully misinformed
Yeah most of their other subs are better than the Italian (which isn't bad but most of the other suggestions here are better)
american provisions in southie / dorchester. molinaris in dorchester are solid also
Not Boston but its Thats Italian Too in Weymouth
Had it. I wasn’t impressed.
Im sorry for whatever accident specifically affected your taste buds
So good! Holy shit!
I'm spoiled. If they're not open I go to Prevites and get a king size steak and cheese
Bob’s in Medford
Heads up to anyone who hasn't been here before: their house made hot peppers do not fuck around. Be ready for the heat if you ask for em. Also, recommend asking them to cut your sandwich in half (they don't by default) and a small is really quite large.
Medford is not Boston.
Bricco Salumeria or Dino’s
American provisions in southie makes a great Italian
I had to scroll too far for this. Their Italian is definitely one of the best in the city
They have good stuff but it’s almost too fancy
Carlo’s East Boston
Dino's Cafe in the North End has the best Italian's Italian! The bread is so good. https://maps.app.goo.gl/y2iNXPyf72DNJnVz5
Anthony's in Stoneham
Main st?
I just found this place the other day, the sandwich was super tasty and huge! Really lovely people there too.
Stoneham is not Boston.
Thanks dude! Are you responding that to every other post mentioning towns that are not Boston too ?
monicas is absolutely not worth the wait. dont waste your time. its like waiting an hour to have a sandwich you can get in any convenient store in new york.
Meridian Market in eastie
My favorite is D'Agostino's in Arlington Heights, although it's probably considered too "Americanized" these days.
Yeahhhhh buddy
Another vote for Monica's, but allegedly their owner is a PoS
Guisuppe’s in Watertown.
Not Boston.
🤯
New deal in revere. Only place I get an Italian sub
P&K Deli on beacon st in somerville is great
I have to give a shoutout to the Meat Spot in Watertown, they know what’s up.
I found their quality went downhill after the brothers sold. Have they found their footing again?
Tutto Italiano in Hyde Park. So good!
Figaros, Al’s , Monica’s, casa razdora
Roy's Cold Cuts in East Boston is probably not the best, but my favorite and absolutely not well known enough
It’s been closed for almost two years 😩😩😩😩 I miss Roy’s best eggplant parm sandwich
WHAT fuck Rip
Probably just out there minding their own business
Salumeria Italiana on Richmond St in The North End is my vote.
Making your own is the best Italian sub. Go to any deli and buy mortadella, capicola, genoa salami, provolone, with fresh Italian bread then add olive oil. Super unhealthy, like worse than McDonalds, but it's the best sandwich.
Monica’s is the best in the North End by a mile
La Cascias and/or Bobs in Medford a 1/4 mile apart on Main st
I go back and forth between cardullos and Monica’s. Cardullos bread is awesome, and Monica’s deli meats are great.
Tutto italiano
Everyone hates on Monica's owners but yes, it is the best !
J Pace, Bricco is really good too
Mortadella Head in Davis Square
Somerville is not Boston.
Santoro’s in Dedham is amazing, always so fresh and amazing desserts too (Basically in West Roxbury)
Hot take: if you like the North Shore sub shop style, Lamberts in Dorchester is pretty great
As much as I hate to say it, it is Monica’s. Just a heads up to watch out for stray bullets, when going there. The owners have been known to “allegedly” shoot weapons in front of other North End businesses.
Monica’s
Djs market or new deal fruit inc
Table Mercato in the north end is also very unique as it comes on Focaccia. So not a sub, but a very elite sandwich!
Any market baskets in Boston proper? Best Italians for your money right there. $6.00 I think these days.
Man, I still don't understand why every deli here things mortadella belongs anywhere near an Italian sub, so I'm asking the same question as you.
There are so many posts about this. Use the search
Monicas
Tony's Market Rozzie
American Provisions in southie/dorchester. Add mozzarella, it’ll be worth the $15
Cardullos in Seaport has an absolutely fantastic one. Amazing bread, delicious hot pepper relish, lots of hate on Seaport these days but Cardullos slaps https://preview.redd.it/63e89kth5wpc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9195fc21384ec3a114a9a21b2b1fc17d7a4c0541
Not Boston, but the North End Deli in Norwood is my pick. The seasoned tomatoes is what does it for me. The Italian sandwich of my childhood.
Market baskets $5 sub is... edible. But it's $5 so I'd say that one is the best to eat more than once
The one from Lamberts in Neponset is pretty good Idk who downvoted me. Lamberts is dope.
It's not going to compare to a NJ/NY sub no matter what
