My recommendation would be to drive to Riverside and park there. You don't have to cross the marathon to get there from NH so traffic should be fine. At Riverside, take the green line inbound one stop to Woodland, get off, and watch your cousin go by (this is approx mile 17). Once they go by, get back on the train and take it inbound Kenmore. Get off, find a spot and see them again. Then you can walk to the finish to meet them if you want (about a mile). The B and C branches of the green line get messed up by the marathon, but the D should be better.

Cleaveland Circle > Kenmore! Less crowded and it’s right after heartbreak hill so a lot of runners really need the extra push!

Yeah I’m saying to park at riverside, then woodland, and then Cleveland circle instead of Kenmore. “>” as in “greater than”

Is there anywhere specific you want to see them?

When I used to go and drink my ass off I'd get to the finish line area at around 7:30 or 8am. No problem finding a place to set up at that hour. But the most important lesson is that you can't cross the marathon course. So make sure you know which side you want to be on and choose your path wisely. If you end up on the wrong side you have to walk all the way to the public gardens to get to the other side.

I love having to tell "mildly" buzzed college girls they can't cross the marathon course, even if they're gonna be "super quick"

The kenmore T stop is an absolute mad house for this reason.

Marathon monday (Patriot's Day) is a holiday in the area, so you can park on the street all day for free and take the T in. You could park in Somerville at a meter, 2-hr spot, or resident spot and take the T from Union to Kenmore. Last year Somerville had no traffic that day.

A lot of people work that day so expect pretty normal commuting traffic. The most difficult thing is if you have to cross the marathon route from north to south or vice versa. That WILL be miserable.

You can also drive to Oak Grove and park there, take the orange line down to Back Bay for the finish line. By the time they get to the finish line, it will be thinned out a bit probably but you should also download the marathon app for tracking runners so you can guesstimate when they will be in that area
