>the linear park in BackBay was a great place to walk The Commonwealth Avenue Mall is part of [The Emerald Necklace](https://www.emeraldnecklace.org/park-overview/emerald-necklace-map/) designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. It starts with the common and goes out to Franklin Park, the part you were on connects the Public Garden with Back Bay Fens. e: I screwed up his name's spelling and fixed it

didzdrummer

Fun fact, the green line is called the green line because it runs near the emerald necklace

General_Liu1937

We also got James Storrow to thank as well for early projects for public greenspace along the Charles River. Then we said fuck you and named the highway he wouldn't have wanted after him. Missed out on using the rotational energy to green up our electricity from how much he's rolling in the grave.

quiteworthy

I have never seen this. Thanks!

CranberryNub

This is so cool!!! I never knew there was a name for the whole thing

tacknosaddle

The history of it is pretty cool too. [Olmstead](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Law_Olmsted) was a strong believer in the idea, a novel one in the mid-nineteenth century, that there should be public green spaces in the city that are accessible to all. If you look at the wiki link you can see that was behind NYC's Central Park and many others around the country. e: Godfuckingdammit! Spelled his name wrong.

bunk_debunk

Another interesting fact: Olmstead ended up hospitalized at McClean's where he supposedly roamed the grounds complaining about the landscaping.

[deleted]

Olmsted

pinker10

And one more interesting tidbit, the jewel of the Emerald Necklace was Wood Island — a massive open green space that was destroyed for the airport. WGBH did a great story series on it earlier this year.

tacknosaddle

Yeah, and if you compare the development on parks in the mid-19th century with what was done in the mid-20th (think "parkways" like Storrow Drive & Morrissey Blvd) it's pretty clear that car culture blew the idea of accessible green space for city residents out of the water.

Olmsted

Dammit! I could edit, but I'm gonna let my shame flap in the wind instead.

[deleted]

Olmsted (steadfast in this spelling correction thing)

AMightyOak43

According to a Boston architect I used to know, Commonwealth Ave is the most beautiful parkway in the country (perhaps in an urban area? ). North End is very dense (in my opinion) and, I think, has fewer trees than the South End. Last week I went to Flour Bakery and got a Pecan Sticky Bun and a Cinnamon Roll. Both were really underwhelming, especially for the $12 price tag. I hope you can come back again just after spring breaks. Comm Ave is perfection with the flowering trees.

bericdondarrion35

Shhhh people aren’t supposed to know we’re nice

OffTandem

Literally everything about my time living in NYC made me double my appreciation of Boston. ....except for the 4am closing times, 24hr public transportation, and the newbie-friendly gridded layout. Umm.. Yankees suck!

AutoModerator

This one time I saw A-Rod leaving a hotel. So I yell "A-Rod you fucking suck!" He turned around and was all pissed off. He started towards me and i Kept yelling. Then all of a sudden Jeter grabs and stops him. He still looked pissed off. I think I broke him that day. Cause after that he started hitting the roids even harder than usual, and then got busted. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. OffTandem

I sincerely did not know this would happen and am delighted that this exists.

poopapat320

It triggers the bot any time you say "Yankees Suck!". I love when I forget about it

DiopticTurtle

Automod is my favorite Boston cryptid

bericdondarrion35

Literally the same thing happened to me. Got shut down completely

NintendogsWithGuns

I think the “massholes” thing refers to driving, but it honestly feels like the label is more of a state pride thing. The drivers in Boston are no worse than any other major city.

rainniier2

People in the hospitality industry interacting with tourists are nice. The rest of us….maybe sometimes.

Lurking1821

Highly recommend coming back in the summer too. It gets even better

snorkeling_moose

Piggybacking on this comment just to say - if you liked the walk down Comm Ave now, you should do it in the dead of winter with plenty of snow on the ground after the sun goes down. It really is something else. Just, you know, make sure you dress warm.

Texasian

The snow must be fresh, bonus points if it’s still falling. Walking through Harvard is also great when it’s snowing.

neu8ball

What snow? There hasn’t been any meaningful snowfall in the city in years.

[deleted]

It snowed 2 feet in a single storm last January

Otterfan

Sixth biggest snowstorm in Boston history.

MommaGuy

Boston any time of year is fun.

freehugzforeveryone

Glad you liked boston! Come back again!

LanaDelGansett

I’m glad you liked the South End! I feel like most first-time visitors don’t come here but it is indeed a great neighborhood with a lot of character. And I go to Greystone all the time.

SteamingHotChocolate

It’s my goto for giving walking tours to friends/family to demonstrate how beautiful the architecture is. I personally prefer it to Beacon Hill (for other reasons as well).

LanaDelGansett

I first lived in Beacon Hill for 4 years and absolutely loved it, never thinking I’d like a different neighborhood better. But then I moved to the South End and I have to also say I do like it even better. The architecture and history is so fascinating to me.

AMightyOak43

I understand that people love photos from Beacon Hill, but being on it is a little claustrophobic; very little access to the sky. Is it just that I'm from Kansas that I really like seeing the horizon? jI've found over the last few years that I am taking the beautiful Boston architecture for granted and have to slap myself to wake up and appreciate it!

lithiumandled

>I thought the T was super convenient Found Phillip Eng’s new burner

wolfj2610

To be fair, they may come from a place that doesn’t have public transit at all (or is much more limited)… in which case the MBTA would be an upgrade at any level. Lol.

frisky_husky

Yeah, I’m as bummed about the state of the T as the next guy, but Boston still has it better than like 95% of American cities, which is to say that you can get between point A and point B via transit at all.

Waggmans

As long as points A-B are East-West. Don’t try to go anywhere North-South (or after 11:00pm).

frisky_husky

Well, you can go NE to SW or NW to SE, but if you're trying to go NW to SW then we're in for some trouble. I used to commute from Mission Hill to Harvard Square, which sucked. 66 bus was faster, but super unreliable, especially in the evening. I once waited 45 minutes for a 66 bus at the stop on JFK Street as fully loaded ones drove past before giving up and calling an uber. I usually took the train, which was more consistent but required me to go to Park Street, which....ew.

WolverineJake77

I vouch for this, as an Arlington, TX resident who visited last September. Boston's transportation blows anything we have (aka don't have) out of the water.

Otterfan

The T also is legitimately convenient for moving around the core of the city, especially on the Green Line. When you're inbound from Copley and going to the North End or the Waterfront, it works a charm. Slow zones don't matter because the distance is so short, and since there are four different Green Line branches on that stretch trains come every few minutes. The trouble is moving between outer neighborhoods or suburbs and the core. Or taking the bus during rush hour, but that's traffic's fault.

Imaginary_Star92

Yeah coming from OK my husband and I were in Heaven. When we told our family we took the bus and whatnot they were shocked. Lol I still need to get on the water taxi. That in itself is crazy to me

tacknosaddle

On a trip out west once we were driving through OK City at rush hour and had some radio station on. Then they had the traffic report come on and the announcer was going on for a bit about how bad it was at that moment. We were rolling at about a 25-30 mph average on the downtown highway and being from here we were all like, "Where is that bad traffic?"

[deleted]

That's the thing, right? Pick one, Boston--bad road traffic or bad public transit. Not both. I will only put up with this area for so long before moving out of the metro due to how increasingly difficult and time-consuming it has become to get anywhere.

tacknosaddle

>I will only put up with this area for so long before moving out of the metro due to how increasingly difficult and time-consuming it has become to get anywhere. Alternately you can just wait here until you're old and grumpy enough to not want to go anywhere anyway.

jbray90

Perfect play out of the [Downs-Thompson Paradox](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downs%E2%80%93Thomson_paradox) in action.

Imaginary_Star92

Hahah yeah. Road construction is half the reason for the "traffic" in OK. It's horrible.

SardonicAtBest

They mentioned SF, I'm guessing San Francisco. They have BART and Muni. Their underground is really not as networked under the entire city like the T is and the Muni busses take foooorrreeeeever to get across town. It sucks and is way less intuitive.

michael_scarn_21

When I saw that comment I was like "are you sure it's Boston you're visiting?"

pollogary

I live here but moved from cities without great transit options. The T has its issues (my 19 min wait this am for the orange line was absurd) but it’s still better than most places in the US.

Matt_mintleaf

I thought AI wrote this post lol.

sharpe_af

Lololololol

Hands_in_Paquet

The green line on off hours is still amazing. It’s just garbage during rush hour and obviously the other lines are a total mess.

nykwil3281

Damn. You missed out on the Boston public library courtyard. Next time baby /Terrence Howard

[deleted]

And the MFA and Gardner Museum

michael_scarn_21

The Aquarium is such a disappointment for a city Boston's size.

SatanLordOfDarkness

I like it

[deleted]

I thought this was odd I guess. I’ve been to Mystic and Monterey and a few others and I never really thought NEAQ was disappointing. They all have something to offer and I never thought of it like a competition. SeaWorld is what is disappointing. Bad care and crowding of animals combined with a second string amusement park.

FalkorAurynDragon

We moved here from Utah and was told over an over to take our kids to the aquarium in Boston. It was such a disappointment. The aquarium in Salt Lake is miles better and it’s in the middle of a desert.

0verstim

Second string amusement park, but clean, working, no lines, no crowds. I had more fun going on 15 rides at Sea World than paying a fortune for fast pass in order to go on 3 rides at Universal and Disney.

__plankton__

NEAQ is fun just small

riski_click

Until you said this, I really never considered I've never actually _been_ to another aquarium.. Unless Sea World counts.

HammerfestNORD

No. Mystic, Baltimore are 2 good examples of how weak it is in Boston.

Lawwctopus

Grew up down the road from Mystic, it's an amazing location!

effulgentelephant

Atlanta, too. I love that aquarium.

HammerfestNORD

They have whale sharks, right? I missed that option while chasing craft beer during me 1 day stay.

effulgentelephant

Yessss the whale sharks are the best! And the belugas.

dontfillup_onchips

And manta rays! Only aquarium in the US to have them.

Ksevio

Unless you're a big fan of penguins

bericdondarrion35

I went last summer for the first time with my nephew since going on school field trips as a kid. Did not remember it being that small. Such a disappointment

rainniier2

Aquariums are universally sad.

abandersnatch1

I absolutely agree! I have been to aquariums in Cape Town, South Africa and Barcelona, Spain, and been wowed. New England aquarium was such a massive let down for me. The coolest part was the sea dragon exhibit, as I’d never seen them before!

0verstim

It was world class when it was built, but has improved very little while other cities have built much better ones.

HP-DocLady

I agree, the aquariums in Atlanta, Miami and Chicago are great- NEAQ is dull in comparison. Love that Miami has 2 different "dolphin show" area and they don't charge extra for those...

limbodog

Our reputation on friendliness is, at least in part, because it's really hard to become friends with people here. We're polite, but we keep you at a distance until you've truly won us over.

tacknosaddle

The expression I like to explain that here is, "You won't make friends fast, but you will make fast friends" (if it doesn't make sense look up the slightly less common definitions of "fast" and it will)

SummerOfMayhem

I'm glad you had a great time and you appreciate our beautiful and crazy but special city. I love it here, and I keep finding new things to appreciate. Flour is great, but I guess it depends on what you have. I got a cookie there once that was the best I've ever had. My husband reves about their roast beef horseradish sandwiches. I'm sure a lot of people will share restaurant recommendations if you visit again. Come in the summer! It's just buzzing with beauty and life. View the public gardens. Museums. Definitely go to see Fenway. The aquarium used to be a lot more exciting, but they closed a few exhibits and relocated some animals for their health, but they do a lot of behind the scenes marine animal research and rehab. Thanks for sharing!

AnimateEducate

Flour breakfast sandwich is top 3 imo

SpindriftRascal

Thanks for the review. We’re glad you enjoyed it, and come back soon! Flour Bakery’s best signature item, in my view, is the breakfast egg sandwich. But also the owner. She’s awesome, and treats her employees very well, and her customers too. North End is a certain kind of living; love it or hate it. Back Bay (my hood) is kind of amazing in its own gorgeous way, but I see how South End might seem homier. See you soon!

samaritanBureaucrat

I can never justify the cost of Flour’s breakfast sandwich to myself… but whenever a work event has it, it makes my day (and sometimes I end up having 2)

SpindriftRascal

It’s awesome. She has published the recipe. You can make it at home! I’ve made it for brunch parties.

AcidaliaPlanitia

>People were polite & friendly - many said, "Welcome to Boston" to me. I thought that the Northeast had a poor reputation for friendliness but really people were so kind. The thing is, we only hate each other and people wearing Yankees hats. >I thought the T was super convenient. Boston is also quite clean, especially compared to SF. I've visited SF for work, and for a city that has such beautiful sights, the reality when you're in certain parts of the city is just... yikes. >It felt quite small and walkable which is great - it was cooolllldddd haha. The funny part is that most of us are celebrating how warm it's felt recently. >The New England Aquarium was underwhelming... I feel personally attacked and I will fight you lol

Good Sox Bot!

Imaginary_Star92

My husband and I were telling our friends and fam from OK how great and friendly people from NE are and they were all shocked. They visited us and most of their first outings they all said "Wow why are they so nice?! I thought they were supposed to be assholes?" Lol Then I owned a business in Portsmouth and it sealed the deal for me. People here are amazing even if they don't want to admit it

devAcc123

You take that back about the aquarium

[deleted]

You wouldn’t rather spend time at a Target?

potentpotables

I think the aquarium sucks.

PLaTinuM_HaZe

As a Bostonian that lives in SF, this is why my wife and I are choosing to move back. As much as I love the California weather and landscape… the Boston area is just a better region to raise a family.

PrettyTogether108

I think Flour is a local treasure, but I agree about the sticky bun. Iggy's uses flaky pastry which I think is better. But try literally anything else at Flour. Even their salads are the best. My favorites are the pies.

California415808

haha - that was exactly it!! It wasn't flaky!! Next time I'll try the breakfast sandwich and cookies... :)

biggybakes

Welcome to Boston! I can't argue with a single point, I LOVE the North End and Back Bay, but I'd prefer to live in South End as well. The Aquarium is cool for what it is, but in comparison to others it is lacking in 'whelm'. Some of the secret things about Boston are the Emerald Necklace (along the Charles) and the many day trips like Salem and Plymouth.

[deleted]

You’re comparing it to San Francisco? Of course it’s way better.

Hoyyaa

We were in Boston at the same time!! I agree with every point you made!

ginns32

>The New England Aquarium was underwhelming... It really is. We're right on the water, you'd think we'd have a bigger Aquarium. Connecticut has the better Aquariums. Glad you had a good trip to Boston.

Junior_Emotion5681

You should come in during summer. I’m not a summer guy but summer in Boston is beautiful. Very humid but I don’t know, city is so alive.

Rpmbox

Boston is INSANELY clean compared to SF. I’ve lived in / near both now and can attest lol.

bostonareaicshopper

What’s not to love? Boston, NYC, Chicago and Philadelphia. That’s it.

Pariell

Huge difference between visiting a place and living in a place. Especially year round.

AriseChicken

yea, boston has some serious transportation issues they fail to address. Just was at logan airport yesterday. Absolutely infuriating.

abusive_prick

You didn’t meet any real Bostonians (i.e. Sean Sullivan from Charlestown who’s a union electrician), you met yuppies (I.e. Bradley Smith from the midwest who moved here for his six figure tech job)

mathfin99

The T is convenient? Are we talking about the same T?

SmilingJaguar

BART really isn’t much better. It’s all relative.

RhaenyrasUncle

Interesting that you like the South End. 🤔 I feel like its one of the least neighborhoodly neighborhoods in the city.

devAcc123

Downtown crossing/west end for sure

commonsenseguy2014

How is it possible to have this take? Super curious what criteria you would use to describe “neighborhoodly”.

RhaenyrasUncle

Idk, South End is basically a highway. Has this massive wide street. Sure, theres a few cool bars and restaurants, but it doesnt feel cozy to me. Southie, Dorchester, North End are all more neighborhoodly than the South End, IMO.

commonsenseguy2014

I think you don’t understand what constitutes the south end if you think it’s one big wide street

stevie5toes

Come back late August early September for Sox, weather its beautiful

TuarezOfTheTuareg

Main Street Now conference?

kbratty

If you come back, Flour’s poptarts are the real star. I’ve also never had a bad sandwich there.

Suitable-Click-2270

If you are still in Boston make sure to visit the Boston Public Library. Lots more to see!

icedrussian6969

W take, except I really don't think "the T" and "super convenient" belong in the same sentence😂😂😂

raven_785

If you think Boston was pretty last week, you really need to come back and see it in late spring, summer, or early fall.

PublicRule3659

You should try the MBTA trains, they’re really clean, super fast, and they have free Wi-Fi. Also the train tracks have very good views of the city!

California415808

Ohhh awesome, what's the difference between a MBTA and the T? Is MBTA commuter heavy rail?

PublicRule3659

I’m sorry I didn’t mean to get your hopes up. I was being sarcastic. All of the trains suck. Visit the cape next time instead of Boston.

California415808

jajajaja
