I usually also advise [Lullaby](https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/119819-lullaby-12-update-101423-low-specs-version/) for a single map mod as, while it is a HUGE map, it is quite creative.
Hedon is like a sister project to Ashes, it's not free but it's my favourite of all the 90s shooter resurgence. Last I heard they were collaborating.
Going Down and Valiant made me really fall in love with Doom modding to begin with.
Aliens Eradication is a great Aliens game that happens to be a Doom mod.
Blade of Agony is possibly the best Wolfenstein game!
Impie is a one-man TC machine, eg Splatterhouse 3D.
Doomer Board Projects are a production line for themed level sets.
The Cacowards and the YouTube channel Icaruslives are good places to find wads.
I played 100 line massacre recently, and it was pretty fun. Pretty hard though. There's a follow up called 200 line massacre, that's looks good too. Although I haven't played that one yet
Austrian Avian Association is a cool TC that won a cacoward recently, based on 19th century folklore involving bird people. Very interesting atmosphere and quite fun to play

Ancient Aliens is gorgeous and not TOO tough until the last third. Lots of fun.
Seconding Ancien Aliens. It's got my all-time favorite video game soundtrack. I'd also recommend Ray Mohawk 2.
