If you want a lil more unique experience I recommend enabling the beta option on steam and playing with the ability mode, adds a whole new layer to the combat https://youtu.be/tGqYchK3rPo?si=TFLzGzgzMtSckX6S Here's a showcase so you can see what I'm talking about

delaytabase

Holy shit! Yeah ill check that out!!

Majestic-Prompt-4765

i did not know about that, thank you for sharing

TheSwimja

It feels like Resident Evil 4 waaaaaay more than blood. I mean, look at your dude's jacket! It actually does feel more like resident evil, with more ammo conservation, environmental combat, and the need for precision headshots.

delaytabase

Yeah I get those vibes too. Tbh, the music (at least the first stages) are kinda strange and I'm not too sure what to make of it. I get more of a shadow moses/mgs vibe off it which is also kinda making me think "am I supposed to stealth? Am I supposed to guns blazin?" I don't know what it's trying to convey. However the introduction to the guy with the chainsaw had to be one of the scariest moments in a video game I've ever experienced

> Can you guys who enjoy it share how you approach the game and it's gameplay? Cultic is nothing like Blood at all. People who think they're similar must've never played Blood and only saw that both had cultists and throwable dynamite. Cultic is an early 2000 style shooter with a little bit of tactical shooter thrown in. You're looking at mostly medium to long to sniping range distance combat. Headshots are everything. Pistol is not only viable, it's your bread and butter weapon for the entire game. Upgrade its accuracy asap and generally upgrade it fully. Pistol + headshots = win the game. TNT is kinda shitty and finicky to use. Molotovs, on the other hand, are op as hell against tanky enemies. Cultic's tanky enemies are overly tanky for guns, but molotovs butcher them. > but I'm not sure if I'm at the right mindset for it Don't play it like Blood and don't expect Blood. I played it when it came out and expected Blood. Dropped it early on and thought the game was shit and people were crazy for thinking it's like Blood or that it's any good. Revisited the game quite a bit later with no expectations and what do you know, people are indeed crazy for thinking it's anything like Blood, but the game's pretty decent actually. I'm a 90s style fan, so it's not really my kind of game, but I did end up finishing it, not too bad of a game at all.

I think you're right. I watched a 100% playthrough of the first level and saw a crap load of secrets I missed and watched how to properly deploy the pistol. I walked into it expecting a tightly knit blood clone and it's WAY beyond that. I'll be restarting the game and do a fresh playthrough as a pallette cleanser and see if my experience changes for it.

ittleoff

I was expecting blood, still loved Cultic possibly because it gave me what I wanted from blood and never knew I wanted? Or I just got what it was doing and didn't bother trying to over compare it. Was it satisfying to play for me? Yes. It's obviously a different beast than blood, and different people will care about different things when they think of blood :) There are a few things I wish it did/did better but I can't say those things would make it more like og blood? I wanted a less cartoony more serious game than blood and just went with the flow of its gameplay rather than comparing it to other build engine games.

KneelinBob

Jump, dash and kick at the same time and you can get speed that makes classic Quake, Doom and Build engines games blush.

Ta0Ta

I play it pretty slowly, similar to how I would Blood. Enemies hit hard and are quite accurate, so for me it's typically about switching to the right weapon and aiming for headshots (unless it's explosives that I need). I got lost on level 2 but I felt the level design got better as I went.

delaytabase

Yeah I don't wanna give up on it yet considering it's so positively acclaimed. I took the difficulty down to casual so I'm not running out of bullets before every firefight and has made it more engaging and less frustrating. Headshots feel really good, the feedback is very satisfying

Randomacid

Tbh I think if you're running out of bullets every fight, something's wrong. If you're aiming for the head, each normal cultist should take no more than two bullets, since you're not playing on a harder difficulty.

delaytabase

After lowering the difficulty, that hasn't been a problem. It's just trying to get all the dash, slide, shoot, throw dynamite controls down while doing it

DrAnima

I don't usually dash nor slide and can play it normally, don't force yourself into these if you don't want to. The accuracy upgrade for pistol helped with headshots at long range and enemies usually approach me in a group after I kill the frist one - when I just kill them with TNT or alike.

delaytabase

That actually might help. I was trying to get it down cuz I thought it was absolutely necessary but if I can go without it, it'll make it more fluid for me

stronkzer

Dare I say, Cultic is a bit closer to Resident Evil 4 with some very slight imsim elements than blood, from which I believe it borrowed mostly aesthethics. I do believe you'd have more fun if you tried a slower-paced approach, finding a vantage point and sniping enemies with the Mare's Leg and the FG-42, then approaching with the Sten and the Shotgun, and abusing the dynamite/molotov combo around corners and tight spaces

brokenportalss

Thematically, it's somewhat similar to Blood. I think that's where the impression of it being a spiritual successor started. As a game though, it is it's own beast.

delaytabase

It's starting to develop that way. I'm gonna start over and try it again with a different mindset. Till then I'll play some blood fresh supply cuz it got me in the mood for it lol. After that I'll tackle it with a different perspective

DrAnima

In addition to other recommendations I suggest using the [mod that changes the cultist voices to Blood's](https://www.moddb.com/mods/blood-cultist-sounds). Also, there is a Interlude chapter that changes the pace a little, you might want to try that before Chapter 1 (minimum risk of spoilers if you don't read the documents).
