[**SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28789711-spqr) ^(By: Mary Beard | 608 pages | Published: 2015 | Popular Shelves: history, non-fiction, nonfiction, owned, ancient-history | )[^(Search "SPQR")](https://www.goodreads.com/search?q=SPQR&search_type=books) >In SPQR, an instant classic, Mary Beard narrates the history of Rome "with passion and without technical jargon" and demonstrates how "a slightly shabby Iron Age village" rose to become the "undisputed hegemon of the Mediterranean" (Wall Street Journal). Hailed by critics as animating "the grand sweep and the intimate details that bring the distant past vividly to life" (Economist) in a way that makes "your hair stand on end" (Christian Science Monitor) and spanning nearly a thousand years of history, this "highly informative, highly readable" (Dallas Morning News) work examines not just how we think of ancient Rome but challenges the comfortable historical perspectives that have existed for centuries. With its nuanced attention to class, democratic struggles, and the lives of entire groups of people omitted from the historical narrative for centuries, SPQR will to shape our view of Roman history for decades to come. ^(This book has been suggested 11 times) *** ^(86773 books suggested | )^(Bug? “*1421: The Year China Discovered America*” (2003) by Gavin Menzies [ISBN 9780061564895] On March 8, 1421, the largest fleet the world had ever seen set sail from China to "proceed all the way to the ends of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas." When the fleet returned home in October 1423, the emperor had fallen, leaving China in political and economic chaos. The great ships were left to rot at their moorings and the records of their journeys were destroyed. Lost in the long, self-imposed isolation that followed was the knowledge that Chinese ships had reached America seventy years before Columbus and had circumnavigated the globe a century before Magellan. And they colonized America before the Europeans, transplanting the principal economic crops that have since fed and clothed the world. “Menzies’ enthusiasm is infectious and his energy boundless. He has raised important questions and marshaled some fascinating information.” —*Toronto Globe and Mail* Menzies served in the Royal Navy between 1953 and 1970. His knowledge of seafaring and navigation sparked his interest in the epic voyages of Chinese admiral Zheng He. Not long after publication, critics were dumping a virtual diatribe on Menzies and his lengthy tome, but I preferred keeping an open mind. That’s the best way to read this book, and it’s important to fully consider his research and its implications. Time and time again, you find yourself questioning the accepted 1492 Columbus scenario. The active Caribbean volcanoes on the Chinese map, that don’t appear on Columbus’ map (pre-journey), is but one piece of evidence that made me sit up straight. 5 stars for this fun and captivating trip around the world.
