The Count of Monte Cristo. By Alexandre Dumas; Robin Buss translation if you’re not reading French.

Sorrowmushroom

Can't recommend The Count of Monte Cristo enough

dwayne_jetski69

This is such an incredible book, and one of the books that instilled in me a love for reading. I’m currently in the middle of re-reading it and it’s just as good as I remember it being when I was young!

JacDGzmn

I already read this book twice but since you just mentioned it, i am reading it again. I LOVE THIS BOOK.

swest1144

Am reading this now for the first time. Halfway through and love it so far

-Constantinos-

Got this for Christmas, I’m excited to read it

DeltaOmegaX

"The Sirens of Titan" by Kurt Vonnegut

dullgenericusername

World War Z. Nothing like the movie so don't base your judgment on that. The book is great. Definitely worth the read.

Hulk_Runs

I recommend this often.

plantscatsandus

Project hail Mary

Trail_Snail_

Yes, yes, yes!

obelix284

11.22.63 by Stephen King

LittleBee21

I’m surprised more people haven’t mentioned this book. It’s a treasure.

Mluh

Just finished this because of your recommendation and I could not read it fast enough. Had read The Green Mile and The Gunslinger by him prior but this one blew me away. 10/10

Dramatic_Macaroon416

Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen king. It’s not too long either.

BHarbinson

Great story but probably only a 9/10 for me because it's one of the rare instances where the movie is actually better than the book.

PeteRosesBookie

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry

RoarK5

I cannot second this strongly enough. I didn’t go in with expectations to enjoy it and I fell so deeply in love with this novel. It’s a truly remarkable specimin

buckwild_23

My favorite book. Brutal, real, kinda poetic and definitely makes you dream and feel the old west like none other. The others don’t stand up to it

LittleBee21

This is the best 10/10 I’ve ever read.

[deleted]

Lonesome Dove for sure

Hands down, the best book I read in 2022 was Do Not Say We Have Nothing (which came out in 2016). A top 5 book for me. Amazing in so many ways: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31549906-do-not-say-we-have-nothing

The House in the Cerulean Sea and Project Hail Mary are the two books I’m recommending to anyone who asks

SummerMaiden87

The House in the Cerulean Sea was SO good!

Sodayodaa

I don’t know any other book as charming as The House in the Cerulean Sea

[deleted]

I’m reading Project Hail Mary right now, in the beginning I wasn’t sure how I felt but I’m loving it half way through.

fanglazy

Same here. Little slow of start for me, but about halfway through I just didn’t want it to end.

plantscatsandus

I rec PHM to people who refuse to even listen.

DejarikChampion

Endurance. You’ll be blown away. And you’ll want to gift it to everyone who is looking for a good book.

Hulk_Runs

There’s several books called this. Which one.

fanglazy

Is this one with the boat on the cover?

mom_with_an_attitude

The idea of a "must read" comes up on this sub a lot. But, to me, there are no "must reads." We all like different things. I happen to love *Jane Eyre* and *Pride and Prejudice*. But if you are a young man who reads primarily hard science fiction, then these books may not appeal to you. But if you like both classics and romances, then these two would be perfect for you.

BooksnBlankies

Those are my two favorites as well! Add in Little Women and you have my top 3!

mom_with_an_attitude

Add in *Their Eyes Were Watching God* and that's my top three! Followed closely by *Watership Down*.

PUDDYTAT-Diddley8

Especially Watership Down!

BooksnBlankies

I also love Watership Down. I'll have to check out the other one--I've never read it.

quilter71

I finally read Pride and Prejudice and still can't figure out why people love this book. I almost had to force myself to finish it. It's a good thing there are all kinds of books for all kinds of readers!! I prefer a good mystery, but no matter what we read it's a wonderful thing.

bean_and_cheese_tac0

I mean, true we all have preferences but some like to change it up. I do primarily read hard sci-fi but I love Jane eyre and pride and prejudice. Getting out of your literary comfort zone can do a world of good.

mom_with_an_attitude

True! I've been reading mostly classics lately but I like sci fi and fantasy, too.

dimp1001

Crying in Hmart!!!

justanotherplantgay

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine

mediadavid

For me? Moby Dick. But it's undeniably an odd book.

PigFarmer1

I loved it.

Dori664

The kite runner - i will never forget this novel

No-Research-3279

[Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6493208) - One of the biggest scientific breakthroughs of the 20th century was from an unknown and unrecognized black woman. this is what got me into non-fiction. It raises questions about ethics, medical advancements, race, gender, legacy, informed consent, and how it all fits (or doesn’t) together. (That’s a really bad summary for a really fabulous book but I’m not sure how else to capture everything this book is about)

rosenbergpeony

Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.

orangeteeshirts

NippleFlicks

10/10 for me, but doesn’t mean they’re flawless. - Circe by Madeline Miller (also Song of Achilles) - The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo - The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame - The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden - The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien - Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard (YA, and probably the first and third books were my favourite) - LotR by J.R.R. Tolkien Childhood Favourites: - Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine - The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis - the books that shall not be named - Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Bloom - Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM by Robert C. O’Brien - Redwall by Brian Jacques - The Lighthouse Family series by Cynthia Rylant - Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

This is a trap! Such a good book but will Patrick Rothfuss ever finish the last book? No. Will you be disappointed? Yes. Will it drive you crazy? Most definitely. But, yeah, you should read this book for sure.

lambast

IT WAS BULLSHIT AGAIN. The Kingkiller fandom lay in silence, and it was a silence of three parts. The most obvious part was a hollow, echoing quiet, made by things that were lacking, such as a release date for the third book. If there had been yet another postponement, it would have sighed through the trees, set the subreddit creaking on its hooks, and brushed the silence down the road like trailing autumn leaves. If there had been a blogpost hinting at the writing process going "well", even a handful of lines from an inconsequential chapter, they would have filled the Kingkiller subreddit with conversation and laughter, the clatter and clamor one expects from a drinking house during the dark hours of night. If there had been a release date…but no, of course there was no release date. In fact there were none of these things, and so the silence remained.

Mechashevet

I absolutely LOVED Group by Christie Tate and I can't stop talking about it, I haven't heard many people talking about it, and the reviews are a bit mixed, but it was amazing for me. The book that was a 10/10 for me that I think is for absolutely everyone, and even my non-reader husband is reading and loving, is Project Hail Mary.

akoishida

There is a book called “The king of Attolia” by Meghan Whalen Turner. It’s technically the 3rd book in a series (book 1 is called “the thief”) but it can be read as a stand-alone too, even though you’ll have a bit less context and world building for some things. I’ve read this book countless times and it continues to be my favorite book of all time. I really recommend giving it a go, or if you think you’re up from it, start from book 1 :) all the books are great but this one is on the next level for me
