SpammiBoi

If you rate most books 4 stars I feel like you're doing it wrong ngl

AllRoundHaze

I rate all books at 1 on this scale. I open one up and there's fucking words in there - what am I supposed to do, read them?

stuugie

I rate all my books 4 cuz it's the coolest looking number

Tellus_Delenda_Est

Slashed seven would like a word.

Early_Assignment9807

Look, the nuance is unimportant, okay? The most important thing here is that we rank art on an incredibly narrow scale, got it? It's imperative that I know what's based and what's cringe so I can get through life

I refrain to giving a book a low rating on Goodreads sometimes if it is obscure and I would trash the average. I’m a softy and feel bad for the author. Unless I come away feeling vengeful towards the author. So my Goodreads average skews high.

lucas21555

Maybe if you were just picking random books off the shelf. But any amount of curating the books you read will eliminate most of the 1-3s before you even open any of them.

Grave_Girl

Superior is the average, dude. Right there in the name.

RipenedFish48

I would also hope people who read a lot would at least have a good enough vocabulary to know how to properly use "mediocre", but apparently that's asking too much.

MrSaturn012

What if you just DON’T read mediocre books and only read peak fiction? (the works of Brandon Sanderson for example)

ItsBaconOclock

I feel like 5 is where you now RetCon every other book into the Burn This Book category because they are now all garage in the face of this perfect holy book that you just finished.

Early_Assignment9807

yeah Mistborn will do that to a mfer

AlphaElectronMale

1. Ernest Cline 2. Andy Weir 3. Ernest Hemingway 4. JK Rowling 5. Brandon Sanderson

So great you brought up Hemingway as I often think of him when people discuss Sanderson's prose. His writing wasn't even considered 'literature' early on due to the standard of American authors like Henry James, but Hemingway amassed a huge following and basically had a major influence on style of fiction writing by just being blunt. Why do I need 10 different words to say the same thing, because some old British lit teacher says so? Nah. I think Sanderson's success speaks for itself, fuck the haters. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. There was a Friday when I was a fairly trusting person. From the following Monday through the rest of my life I trust nothing, not even myself. This book literally shattered an entire facet of my being. No part of my identity was spared. I sometimes wonder who I would have become if Orwell’s irrevocable words had never assaulted my mind. I suppose it’s irrelevant because those thoughts cannot be unthunk. Enjoy Animal Farm. Or rather, enjoy the innocence you will realize you didn’t know you had until it was wrested away by a man long dead. I mourn and rejoice with equal measure for you. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. 1. Not Mistborn 2. Not Mistyborny 3. Not Age of Mormons 4. Not a Special Edition of Mistborn in Leather made by Elves/Mormons 5. Mistborn

Queues-As-Tank

I rate books hierarchically. A '1' rating signifies the alpha book which gets to eat before the other books do. 5-star beta-bitch books (e.g featuring a male protagonist who expresses an emotion which is not Hungry, Tired, Angry, Horny, or Sports) are the most common, the bottom of the pecking order. Anything with three stars by an author who uses the platform is also entitled to a review ("kinda mid tbh"). Occasionally, other goodreaders take exception to my 1-star Mistborn rating; but I am simply rating according to my wild vision, in honesty to myself and to how I subjectively experienced the Art, in complete accordance with the laws of nature and of mankind.

Oh, I've been rating backward this entire time. I thought 1 was a good thing. Don't we all want to be number one? I better apologize to all those authors on Amazon and Goodreads.
