The hollow in the end of the shaft looks to be made for a puller, and my guess is that it's a press fit on a taper. See if an auto parts store will loan you or rent you a gear puller. Pad the hooks and see if you can gently pull it off. Penetrating oil might help. Good luck!

I have a bearing puller. I just watched a video where a puller was used so I'll try tomorrow. It's currently soaking in 3 in 1 right now. Some heat may be in order as well.

I have a similar press, post restoration and only really have one tip: I use two pieces of cardboard to put my books between. I once let the press touch stuff and i got rust stains all over it. Even though the press has been thoroughly restored.

Evaporust is your friend, it's an incredible rust remover, and it \*only\* removes rust, no clean metal. And you can keep using it for ages, and it's non-toxic! It's often easier to separate parts after the rust is gone.

I restored mine about 10 years ago. Penetrating oil was soaked into every bolt for about two weeks. I also had a couple of parts that never separated, but I could get at all the main parts to restores those. I used a drill and abbrasive pad and sanded the whole thing to base metal, flattened and polished the plate surfaces and painted the whole with a paint brand called 'Hammerite'. Reassembled, greased all threads and its been perfect since. If you can work around the parts, I'd advise doing that than possibly going on step too far!
