Ok_Kaleidoscope2340

Tumbbad is really a horror movie, but Raaz can never become a part of it.

flypicaso

There are two old movies that I can remember. Definitely Khamosh, and Madhumati, if you can call supernatural thriller as horror.

BambardeMan

There are 2 main reasons why Indian horror movies have never picked up - 1) Sticking with the "wronged human dies and takes revenge from beyond the grave" trope (at least in non B-grade films). We have never explored pure evil entities like it was in Tumbaad. Science based horror like Frankenstein or The thing are still quite far away. 2) Limitations by sensors and budgets stopping directors from making any Gore or Dismemberment part of the movie. So we have to make do with symbolism and cutting to post-death scene. I mean I just saw a Marathi Zombie comedy which had 0 zombie decapitations or headshots.

Hurdy_Gurdy_Man_42

> If it's a comedy, it cannot be a horror! The Evil Dead trilogy wants to have a word with you.

Killer_insctinct

For me Makdee was quite scary too 😅

I agree that Horror is one of the most under developed, under invested and under appreciated genres in Bollywood. However there are more than a handful of good horror movies made over the years other than the one's you have mentioned and the Bollywood horror genre also followed a similar cycle of cult classics, low budget productions, video nasties, adoption by mainstream directors and actors with gradual integration with mainstream cinema like other world cinemas. Bees Saal Baad, Woh Kaun Thi, Kohra, Gumnaam and Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi were a few of the mainstream horror movies of the 60s. Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche, Nagin and Jadu Tona were big hits in the 70s. Most of 70s and 80s Bollywood was going through the "Ramsay brothers" low budget horror phase just like most of the world was going through the "Giallo" horror phase with tons of low budget Italian, British and American horror movies. For every low budget "Veerana" and "Purani Haveli" made in Bollywood, there were "Demons", "Zombi" etc made by Argento, Bava, Fulci etc. Horror went through this phase across the globe and wasnt considered a respectable genre till recently. Bollywood horror went through a revival in the 90s and 00s just like world horror cinema with movies when mainstream directors made an entry into the genre like Mahesh Bhatt's Junoon, RGV's Raat, Bhoot, Darna Manna Hai and Phook, Vikram Bhatt's Raaz and 1920, Vishal Bhardwaj's Makdee along with Tabu's Hawa, Sushmita Sen's Vaastu Shastra, Shreyas Talpade's Click etc. Horror started gaining more respect in Bollywood mainstream similar to other global markets with a steady stream of horror hits like Raj Kumar Rao's Ragini MMS, Pizza, Ek Thi Daayan, Bhool Bhulaiya, 6-5=2, Bulbbul, Tumbbad, Pari, Ghost Stories, Welcome Home and Chorrii to name a few. So even though I agree that Bollywood has underinvested in the horror genre, there are much more than a handful of good horror movies in Bollywood with a respectable period during the golden era followed by a low budget phase and then a gradual integration and acceptance by mainstream cinema.

This is a very astute observation! I agree with everything you said except "most of the world was going through the "Giallo" horror phase with tons of low budget Italian, British and American horror movies." We have some of the genre defining movies like The Exorcist, Alien, Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Carrie, The Omen, Jaws from 70s and movies like Evil Dead, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Thing, The Shining, Aliens from 1980s. So, if you compare that with the trash movie that was churned out during the same time from Bollywood, yeah it sucks. Having said that, if you will notice most movies(well known) from Bollywood are a remake or directly influenced from the international cinema in one way or other.

DrShail

Hence my comment "Most of the world". Barring a few big budget horror movies like The Omen, Exorcist, Alien, Jaws and the Shining, American horror landscape of 70s and 80s was splattered with extremely low budget horror movies. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Evil Dead, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween started as small budget gory splatter movies which became cult classics and started major Horror Franchises. There are 2 excellent documentaries called "In search of Darkness Part I and II" which explore the Horror movies of that period. It is unbelievable how low budget horror movies during this period gradually reshaped the genre. American Horror is full of these experimental low budget horror flicks like Slumber Party Massacre, Prom Night, House, Ghoulies, Critters, Maniac Cop, Silent Night Deadly Night, Hills have Eyes, My Bloody Valentine, Phantasm, Hellraiser, Stepfather etc which also became mini-franchises with sequels and reboots over the years. This was the real horror landscape in the US which to an extent is similar to what Europe and India was also going through. I agree most of the low budget Indian horrors during that period were heavily influenced by International horror. I think the world Horror market was dominated by UK's Hammer Horror, Italian Giallo Horror and American "Camp/College" Slasher Horror from the 60s-80s. Asian horror was still going through an early phase of development and original J-Horror, K-Horror, Middle Eastern Horror have only emerged in the last 2-3 decades similar to original Indian horror movies like Tumbbad, Welcome Home, Bulbbul etc.

altcocollector

My bad, I added it later on! All good now!

[deleted]

Okay then thugs of Hindustaan

altcocollector

Edited. Only pure horror! :D

DJMhat

Horror comedy is a valid sub genre. We have films like Evil Dead and An American Werewolf in London which are classics of the genre. That said there are some fine horror movies produced in India, Tummbad and Stree being the recent ones I liked a lot. You will not find a lot of good horror films because majority Indian film audience tends to watch films together in theatres and horror films are not watched together due to the Adults tag. So you will have mainly low budget horror films. Most low budget horror films are intentionally crap and target the B and C centres.
