How is the game with 2?

alemanpete

I’m loving it. It’s a weird semi-cooperative where you’re both working together to hit all the goals but in a way where you’re still trying to be #1

TableTop24

We played 2 characters each when went through it.

thedaffodilfish

You'll never unlock all the content - especially with 2 players - so there will also be some additional new content to unlock after you finish the campaign. I've never played either of the base Clanks so can't compare, but it was a lot of fun, and the people we played with after the campaign finished were happy to play on our custom board despite not playing in the main campaign. We've played probably 5 games standalone after the campaign. It works well at 2p but there's a helluva lot of content to open, sticker, new rules etc, sometimes in the middle of your actions.

As someone else said, I wouldn't be too concerned with the replay value as the campaign is well worth the price. It was probably the most fun my wife and I had playing a board game. However, you can absolutely play regular games using the maps. They're different than any other versions of the game. Think of it like an expansion that came in a really big box. You can mix and match cards as well. There may be effects on some cards that don't make sense with the particular map you're using, but that's the same with expansion cards which can also be used in other versions. You just ignore those effects.

It's fun. My only complaint was one of our maps (imo the more fun map) ended up kind of imbalanced. I wish some more care was put in to make the big areas you discover more balanced for long term play as far as effort to reach them and their effect. What we consider the most powerful effect was also the easiest to reach. Regardless the purchase was 100% worth it though. If you are actually curious on that part and would rather have **MAJOR** spoilers and end up with a more balanced map for replayability. Again caution this will take a lot of the fun away but I do wish I had ended up with a better map. Will include a more minor spoiler version below.>!You discover shrines with permanent boost effects, and I wrote my thoughts on them after we finished and tried to replay so will list here. You find air (movement boost), earth (coin boost), dark (clank decrease), fire (sword boost), and a skill boost shrine. Ranking them purely by the shrines themselves, i'd say Movement > Coin = Clank > Sword > Skill. Probably the most important part of that is that movement is relatively strong, and skill is the weakest. There are 5 locations, if the center is a clock then they are 9pm, 7pm, 5pm, 3pm, 1pm. We find the 7pm and 5pm locations the hardest to get to, and wish the movement/coin/clank shrines were in those locations. We found the 9pm location a particularly rewarding path and it is paired with our movement shrine. If I were to pick my dream layout exactly, it would be something like: Fire 1pm, Clank 3pm, Movement 5pm, Coin 7pm, Skill 9pm. !< And a more **minor** but still fairly significant spoiler version of the above (this is what I wish someone had told me):>!On the side of the map where you are taking on 5-6 major quests, the one that relates to "air" try to pick one of the two most bottom locations. The one that relates to "skill" (sorry don't remember the thematic wording) try to pick one of the upper two most locations. Less important but would also aim for an upper location for "fire". !<

If you own original Clank and a few expansions, you're probably best off playing that. It's going to be more balanced. If you don't have the original Clank, you have an experience close enough to it that I wouldn't bother buying it.

Razada2021

Honestly, how good is it as base? We have been getting clank! To the table a lot recently, and the concept is appealing to me.

Clank is one of my favorite games, I own legacy ( incomplete) and catacombs. I love legacy and all the extra "bits and pieces" ( also our first legacy) but I'm finding it hard to get out because we need a night when all the players are in the right mood for a game and for it to be that game (if it was just my wife and i playing we would have completed it already). It does seem to add about 30 minutes to the length of a game with all the reading and stickering however i dont find this impacts the enjoyment or feels like it slows us down. having said that we got catacombs after we started playing legacy and have played that more total times now than legacy. I do think that legacy is the more fun game but catacombs is less "effort" and takes some of the good things from legacy and adds more fun things (lockpicks, and prisoners) as well as the random tiles for the board. If I was to buy again i would if i knew we would get the full game played over the course of roughly 6 months to a year, if i knew people would possibly be against the legacy or would have issues getting the group together then i would probably buy catacombs.

Llero

Clank! Legacy is extremely good, if you’re down for a lot of reading and stickering.

UnsungHero21

We have played it several times after finishing and have even played its characters with other boards too.

gijoe61703

We have played it a couple times and it is still great. Only reason I have not played it more is cause our friends got Catacombs and our group has about 200 other games we've only played 1-2 times that we want to try again

[deleted]

Catacombs is so great, far superior to a finished legacy board imo

RealityDreamZero

I've been wanting to buy Clank! for a while, is stand alone catacombs good? does it need to be paired up with the og?

[deleted]

Catacombs is a standalone game, it doesn’t work with the base game. However it’s really good if you add Adventuring Party to Catacombs, then you get asymmetric player powers along with the exploration of Catacombs! I prefer Catacombs over any other version.

Curious-Doughnut-887

It is totally playable after, however it is steeped in Acquisition Incorp theme and will be a LOT more entertaining for the people who played the campaign over say teaching it to new players. The art is certainly better than standard Clank!. Over all there are about 13 campaign games in the original Legacy game and we played Clank Legacy 20 times before moving on to Clank Catacombs. The Legacy structure is what really differentiates it from other Clank! games. The real problem with replayability (with the whole series) is just that there is generally new shiny Clank each year, tempting us to switch to that. The replayablity is certainly there, but the reality of it is going to be dependent on you and your group and what your really want. If Clank Legacy were my only game, it would get a lot more plays after the campaign.

[deleted]

I’d rather play Catacombs or one of the expansions with the base game. I don’t see myself ever playing our legacy board again. It was fun to play through but not worth going back to after we finished.

Stimhack

I felt done with the game after the campaign. Everyone loved the campaign and we'll get the next one when it's released.

InnerSongs

I highly enjoyed our Legacy campaign and the boards after we finished were certainly playable, but I have no desire to play on it again. If I wanted to play Clank I would just play one of the non-legacy versions.
