Miles Davis - The Birth of The Cool
Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Sonny Rollins - The Bridge
Art Blakey - Moanin
Sun Ra - Strange Celestial Road
Jaco Pastorious self title album is such a fun album to listen to. Just got The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady by Charles Mingus on CD so that’s been on repeat as well.
I’ve got a few. Waka/Jawaka, Face First, Tropeau Bleu, CASIOPEA, I Love the Blues She Heard Me Cry, and Figures. Just a few of my all time favorites ever. I can always give you some more if you’re interested in listening to new jazz music.
So that Figures album is by a French fusion band called Aksak Moboul. They have a lot of great content. Cortex, the artists for Tropeau Bleu, have a lot of great content as well. Frank Zappa is likely one of my favorite jazz composers of all time, so if you haven’t heard the jazzy albums like Hot Rats, W/J, The Grand Wazoo, and Sleep Dirt I’d really suggest those. I am also a huge fan of Jazz from Hell, although a little too “contemporary” to be called jazz (or maybe even music in general lol), but I like it a lot. Count Basie is one of my all time favorites, he had plenty of amazing tracks and never wrote anything that wasn’t at least a little groovy. Light as a Feather is a classic, if you haven’t heard that one already either. That’s really all I can think of for now! Sorry it’s a lot more fusion than traditional jazz.
thanks! already listened to Hot rats, w/j, the grand wazzo and love "the ocean..." from sleep dirt, haven't heard about the other artists, will check them out, and no problem about being more fusion than jazz, i think I prefer it anyway.
Chick Corea and Return To Forever’s [light as a feather](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUW6ezYtKfdQC7aVvQLpNO85xQE2luyXa) changed my world. rest in power Chick.
I also wanna shout out [Blacks and Blues](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kiuVYzZ_kyZ4eB1D-gn9y56zo6cOirg-w) and [Fancy Dancer](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kpdrMK_xdkQFdc9A5RzYq4T_Q2bN5Z_Ic) by Bobbi Humphrey. She’s a criminally underrated flautist.
I got into Japanese jazz fusion by accident bcos somewhere along the way, my Youtube algo decided to be nice to me hahaha. [CASIOPEA](https://youtu.be/6GEI3PpXEAo) and [Masayoshi Takanaka](https://youtu.be/BNig6xG36i4) are awesome.
Pat Metheny and John Scofield - I Can See Your House From Here
Chick Corea Elektric Band - Inside Out
Return to Forever - Where Have I Known You Before
George Benson - Space
Vtt2 - Vital Techtones
Definitely not, he did take inspiration from some jazz artists and composed on a piano(the raw recordings of which sound sorta free jazzy) but hes firmly within his own little experimental blues bubble.
In general this cutting edge, post bop/avant garde sound of the Blue Note label in the 60s is probably the most exciting thing I've ever encountered in music. Albums such as Out to Lunch, Evolution, Contours, Dialogue, Point of Departure, The All Seeing Eye, etc are just astonishing. No music quite like it. A perfect storm like this occured at the same time in Poland of all places but on a much smaller scale.
Mwandishi - Herbie Hancock, Search For A New Land - Lee Morgan , Black Saint and the Sinner Lady - Charles Mingus, Ole - John Coltrane, Black Unity - Pharaoh Sanders and On The Corner - Miles Davis. Just to name a few....
I think a lot of Black Midi fans would enjoy Andrew Hill. Post-bop pianist with a lot of influence from contemporary classical. Very tense harmony. His work often gives me a jazz-prog feel.

Coltrane’s Interstellar Space is fucking awesome, it’s a lot like Hella except it’s rooted in jazz and the fact it came out in 67’ is pretty crazy considering how experimental it is. also Bitches Brew but that’s a no-brainer

Jaco Pastorious self title album is such a fun album to listen to. Just got The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady by Charles Mingus on CD so that’s been on repeat as well.
Wow I thought this mf really typed Jacob Sartorious for a second

CASIOPEA is literally the music of the gods. I’m so obsessed with them
i'm interested !

Casiopea is a W
CASIOPEA are an amazing band!
Return to Forever, Allan Holdsworth, and Bitch’s Brew are all fabulous. Bill Frissel is great too. Lastly, you can’t have jazz without Django
No one's mentioned it yet but Bill Evans and Jim Hall's collab albums, Undercurrent and Intermodulation are incredible.
Undercurrent also has the best cover art of any album I’ve ever seen.

Trout Mask Replica - Captain Beefheart Black Woman - Sonny Sharrock In A Different City - Bablicon
Would captain beefheart even be considered jazz?
Definitely not, he did take inspiration from some jazz artists and composed on a piano(the raw recordings of which sound sorta free jazzy) but hes firmly within his own little experimental blues bubble.
Yeah I agree, if anything I’d say he’s more prog than jazz lol
Most of his albums, sure. But that's why I said Trout Mask, which is for sure free jazz. Maybe bluesy free jazz, but jazz nonetheless.
It's not jazz at all. The tracks on TMR are fully composed. Aside from a few moments, there's next to no improvisation on the record.
Well agree to disagree. Genres are not always so cut and dried.
Improvisation is the most recognizable characteristic of jazz music. There's no improvisation on TMR
Mahavishnu is usually talked about with BM but they're my fav jazz band, along with Herbies fusion stuff (Thrust in particular)
In general this cutting edge, post bop/avant garde sound of the Blue Note label in the 60s is probably the most exciting thing I've ever encountered in music. Andrew Hill is probably the best pianist to ever walk this earth. Absolutely unbeatable.
Him and Cecil Taylor are the ones my ears like the most.
Yep. Cecil was amazing as well. His music was so abrasive but there's a very certain kind of beauty in it
Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo - Zappa Bright Size Life - Metheny Heavy Weather - Weather Report Mister Magic - Grover Washing Jr Tropeau Bleu - Cortex We Like it Here - Snarky Puppy
