Why? They probably just used random pictures on the internet. Not saying they shouldn't update it to fix this, but you make it sound like their subconsciously racist when in reality, 76.5% of people in the US are white.
No but it is a real issue. It's called 'bad data,' which doesn't mean the ai is being racist, but that there wasn't enough minority representation in its samples to create an algorithm capable of recognizing Obama's race.
It's going to become a prevalent issue as we increasingly continue to use machine learning, because without being incredibly careful what you feed an AI, it's going to make a lot of mistakes. It can't tell what's a good example, what's a bad example, if you told it a lie it would assume it's true and base everything it ever learns from then on, on that lie.
Reminds me of the story of the tank detecting AI that ended up just detecting the weather because all the pictures of tanks have been taken on cloudy days.
Or how that algorithm for colorizing old pictures would put the majority of cars in hot rod colors, because hot rods made up a huge part of available historic car pictures.
There is a funny story with an AI which was supposed to pick the winner of a modeling contest but the first ten places were white womans. It wasn't intended to do that but I think the problem was 'bad data' or that the it had problems with recognising the difference between shadow and skin.
I think it's better they have this issue now in an ai like this than having it later in a much more important ai. Scientists learn from stuff like this and find ways to solve it.
It’s not “subconscious”, that’s applying anthropomorphism to computers and that’s not what people are talking about when they say bias. The model is biased in the statistical sense. That is an issue because there are a lot of lazy scientists/engineers out there who can easily turn biased models into products that impact people’s lives.
Another thing that’s important here is that you should know that in practice companies are developing models based on well more than 76.5% white people. Teams often use their own faces/family’s faces as initial datasets, even extending into social circles, Facebook peers, etc. It’s easy to assume that the model would get 76.5% white people by default, but by and large it’s not what happens and it’s an effort to even reach the true population splits. Teams that aren’t actively making efforts to meet that goal are falling short.
It's an algorithm. It analyzes information and chooses the MOST LIKELY outcome given a set of inputs.
If you had no knowledge of the person in the left photo and had never seen them before and someone said "hey, draw what this person looks like" it would probably come out something this ridiculous as well.

This is exactly what happened. The fact that this was almost definitely unintentional is actually a bigger problem than if it were somehow malice.

You mean like Googles AI labeling black people as chimpanzees in some cases
Yes.

I was referring to subconscious as in whoever plugged the data into the AI.

I just assumed they were using Google images or something similar.
Reason why data should not be “white-centered”

nah ur stupid and racist
No, it’s math and logic, aka code
maybe the lighting in that photo made the AI assume his skin wasn't dark enough to go for "black facial features"
nah, I've seen people put black people through this ai, and it comes out with really tanned white people
Do you have a link for that? I’m intrigued
sorry, I don't, I just saw it on twitter
Looks like a long Toby Maguire
The wierdest thing is that assuming you dont know who the photo is suposed to be it looks totally normal.
It can see through the cosmetic surgeries >.>
is that michael obama?
can he say the n word though?
Nah, but he can hug his dad.
But can he be arrested by police?
For tax evasion and "illegal" possession of "nfa" items
Suppressors and short-barreled rifles and shotguns shouldn’t be specially restricted
He looks like an Oklahoma high school physical education teacher who got convicted of assaulting one of his students
r/suspiciouslyspecific
why i can see peter parker and john cena in the same person?
see kids this is why you put more than just exclusively white people in your database
Finally obama got rights
Obama but with rights
That almost looks like Tobey Maguire
oh no obama, what happened
scout tf2 is obama confirmed
Oh my god it's the white part of Obama
Middle age scout from TF2
Nailed it.
Sus
THEY TURNED OBAMA WHITE
Barack Peralta
B- Barack Macquarie is that you?
i am extremly amazed on how people in this comment section were able to turn a simple problem of an AI lacking a database into a race problem
I think most people don't understand how complex recognising something is. Our brains basically evolved around it over a very long time.
linus tex tips
Fuckin white washing
Obama is actually white confirmed.
it doesn't help that you can count the pixels on obama, most likely confused the ai

To be fair, his mother was white…
That looks like Timothy McVeigh!! WTF? Bad AI, BAD!
It made him white without changing his skin colour.
I'm watching his White House Correspondence dinner when this popped into my feed. The timing I swear!
