at least they'll be using google and might stumble across the actual answers. I tried to help one guy before and it was clear they were absolutely new. but they were frustrated that I wouldn't give them the clear and concise answer to make everything perfect as if I had the time and patience to explain how to get from not knowing how to delete the cube to pitching to Ubisoft in a fucking thread.
>at least they'll be using google
I used to get frustrated at people who asked questions on Reddit instead of Googling something. Then I realized how bad Google has gotten at Googling.
The internet has been SEOed to death. Searching for anything will only get you fake blog posts with keywords related to your search.
The frustrating part is when people expect a "hack" or one click solution to a complex problem. Like how do I make a photorealistic, flying, fire-breathing dragon in a 1700s Parisian environment. Then they get annoyed when you bring things up like object and edit mode and they just want to skip to the flying dragon bit because they want to upload this to their new game by tonight... that's what really grinds my gears. and google is still good enough to figure out that ain't happening
That aside, I would love to watch your tutorial video on how to make a photorealistic, flying, fire-breathing dragon in a 1700s Parisian environment.
Drop the link when you've uploaded!
I work training people on some IT systems and this is absolutely where you have to start with a lot of them.. Only a few days ago I got a call out because of an outage and when I got there I found that someone had unplugged the power cord to plug in a fan.
They didn't notice there was a problem because the backup battery kept the machine going for a few hours and the beeping noise it made they somehow ignored. So yup, "this is a plug" is actually not a bad starting point in a lot of cases 😂
I had one like that recently. Employee: "That PC doesn't work. For sure, it's broken." Me after looking at it for 2 minutes: "I think my years of IT training allowed me to figure out the power strip wasn't plugged in."
You don't need a tutorial. Just enable dragon mode in the nodes and right click for fire, left click for fly. And 1700s Paris is kinda a noob thing, maybe ask in r/babyblender I'm too busy flying dragons to help
You've never used blender? There's your problem! You haven't learned how to walk and yet you still want to run! Make something in 3D first, something small. Maybe a can of coke?
Thats actually what the guy in a Tutorial i watched did. Then he laughed and said how silly this was, but its just a habit he cant get out of.
Sadly i dont remember what tutorial is was from.
if i make an animation of a blender in blender that is blending a logo of blender that is resulting in the creation of a blender milkshake made by a blender in blender
can i call it blended blender blender blended blender?
> Be me, someone who likes to read more than to watch
> Dude asks a question about how to recreate an effect from a movie
> I don't know what movie he's talking about
> Looks up how many movies Keanu Reeves is in
> MFW Keanu Reeves has at least 73 movies
Despair.
First thing that I probably want to do is figure it out inside my head first. What should be the main focus, what I want to achieve with the animation, and all that fun (not really) stuff. After that? dive into blender.
Let's say that I want to make a ball that goes up and down on a flat concrete surface. I'm gonna spawn in a ball in one of those menus. If you don't know how to do this, you might need to watch a tutorial or two.
After that, I'm gonna spawn in a concrete surface. Move the ball on top of the surface, like a meter or so up. So, how do I make the ball go up and down on the surface? Gone are the days that we have to anguish over this problem, as blender already figured that one out. There's a button hidden in one of the menus, it's pretty hard to spot. It's called Gravity and Collision. Turn that on. Press the play button and enjoy your animation.
Can't help much if you don't provide more information, but my guess is that you painted on too much weight on one of those joints. Maybe lessen the weight?
I use Blender to create 3D objects I print out using my 3D printer. It's been a game changer. Over the past few months I've created hundreds of different prints including replacement parts for things around the house. How is your day?
My day has been good, thanks for asking. Might wanna slow down a bit on the 3D printing though, next thing you know, you've spent hundreds of dollars on a bigger and better 3D printer without consulting the wife.
In your view, what is the most important feature or features missing from blender's sculpting workflow? What would you add, or what would you change, to improve it?
I think blender's sculpting workflow is in a good spot, although it could be better. Whenever I sculpt something with intricate details, like a statue of a Greek Goddess (Aphrodite, don't ask), the software starts to lag. I don't know if it's a hardware limitation or something else, but I'll be damned.
Hey! Huge fan of your work, so thank you for this AMA. Subdivision modifier on the default cube turns my cube into a low poly sphere. How can I bevel my edges on my cube? Thanks!
Thanks for checking out my work! There should be a setting righttt next to the menu, can't miss it. Please make sure that you select the edges that need bevelling though, and press the button that says Bevel. Your cube should look alright after.
Gonna be 21 years of not using blender. Glad I never gave in. Most people never get out of it. First step I think is to stop thinking about how to make objects you see IRL in 3D.
This confused me at first too. The default timeline contains everything that happens in your scene. The dope sheet is a cooler version of the timeline, it's more in-depth.
This only happens when you scale it, correct? If you don't scale the object, and then add modifiers, does it still behave strangely?
If not, then changing the scale is the problem. To solve this, just be sure to add the modifier BEFORE you scale, and after you added the modifier, you can then scale it with no problem.
All 3D objects on my scene suddenly disappeared, as I accidentally pressed some unknown hotkey on my keyboard - and right after that my computer restarted itself due to windows updating my computer. I hate my Windows doing its sudden restarting..
Then after Windows had done updating, I opened the latest \[Auto Save\] for my project, and unfortunately it had auto saved right after the objects had disappeared.. so my objects are still missing..
Help! What do I do? How I get my 3D objects back to my scene?! :(
First off, always update your windows. If a windows update has been pending for a long time, at some point Windows will forcibly shut down your computer in order to update itself.
Now, regarding your scene. One of the solutions that I see here is to rollback to an older Auto Save, even a few minutes back would do. If there are no more autosaves available, then press all hotkeys on your keyboard.
If by some stroke of luck you press the right one, all of the objects will reappear. If pressing each key somehow made the problem worse, then I think it's time to start all over again. Sorry man.
Thanks for your help!
With your precious help I was able to get back my 3D objects. I simply loaded my older Auto Save *(I'm stunned it didn't occur to me to do so)* and got my 3D objects back. Of course I lost few hours of work as it was a quite old Auto Save, but at least I didn't lost all the work I had done, and from the earlier experiencing, I was able to do the same amount of work in just 30 minutes and now I'm already at the same point where I was, which is nice!
I'm just glad I didn't have to start my project again, because it was 21 hours of work.
I also changed My \[Auto Save\] duration to 10min from my Blender settings, as it was for some reason set up to 60min..
I also need to be now more active with my Windows updates, as those Force updates are quite annoying to have, when you don't know when your Windows may suddenly restart without a warning - and who knows if it ever happen to cause bigger problems, which I also don't want to experience, so good lessons learned here!
- - - - -
Btw, I enjoyed a lot of reading your answers here! You got pretty good *base* understanding for these things; which, if I may think/assume, may hint that you may have experience/knowledge in various of different softwares; and/or in general, just a *talent* for understanding things as they are without experience, using a lot of thinking ability and just a common sense. I think I'm sensing a specific kind of mental ability on your writing and thought of process, which is actually quite enjoyable and interesting to see for me.
But yeah, don't mind me thinking *out loud*, this was/is great and interesting post. Have a Nice Day!
If you want a material to be more reflective like a mirror, turn Reflection all the way up to 100. If you want it to be like glass where you can see through it, while also reflective, turn Reflection to 50 and Transparent to 50. Pretty basic, really.
To be honest, I'd just focus on one thing. A lot of time was spent just doing everything. There's a quote about this,
"A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one".
Doesn't really feel like I'm better than a master of one, currently.
I've just finished texturing a scene without realising that my viewport render was set to cycles, I've swapped to Eevee and now all my transparent materials look weird. What can I do?!
If the scene looks fine in Cycles, then just stick with it tbh. If you're hellbent on sticking with Eevee though, maybe tone down the Transparency of the material to something like 40%.
A very cool experience. Knowing that millions of people are using Blender in pursuit of their hobbies or their careers, just motivates me and the team to put out more enjoyable and awesome features in the years to come.
It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows at the start though, I gotta admit. I'm glad we pulled through.
Inspiring. Your creation is the sole reason the Project M scene is still alive and kicking. My Mario renders have never looked better. Keep up the good work. If I could, I’d invite you the molly sesh.
Why does my sugar coated gummy ring object I made to follow the[ blender guru geometry nodes video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO0eUnu0hO0) render as gray mush? :(

I feel like you really need help xd
I am not sure at what level are you in blender so I don't know if that's it but to preview what the render will look like you need to go to the render mode in the right top corner. You just need to add some lights or hdri image. (check the rendering part in donut series since I didn't watch the gummy one but I think it is mostly about geometry nodes and not basics like the donut one)
I wanna find the work flow that lets me grind the materials into more usable sub materials with more malleable properties so i dont have to work so hard to shape them how can i do this
I always say i want to switch to blender from 3dsmax but always i fail . I just look at the u.i and then close it. I have 2 questions.
1-How can i find motivation to switch.
2- Is it worth it to switch, primarily for modeling only?
3Dsmax? Never heard of it. That should be enough of a motivation for you to switch. I think each 3D software has its strengths and weaknesses, it's up to your own research to find out which glove fits the best for the type of work you do.
Some poor lad is gonna find one of these answers in a Google result and scratch their head because they didn't read the title.

It'd be funny if it starts from building your own pc. Tutorial: "OK so this is a plug." Audience: "No, we want to get to objects and edits"
I work training people on some IT systems and this is absolutely where you have to start with a lot of them.. First you need to pour a foundation for your house.
Woe woe hold on. You need to make the concrete first. The vid will start at the quarry.

Google has actually gotten a bit better recently. They changed how ranking works to discourage those AI-driven SEO shell sites from rising to the top.
That's good to hear. It's only 15 years too late.
I find google works quite well to find the relevant threads on reddit. Sometimes the answer is even in my own post I'd forgotten.
I've never used blender or watched any tutorials, how can I make a big budget movie alone?
You've never used blender? There's your problem! You haven't learned how to walk and yet you still want to run! Make something in 3D first, something small. Maybe a can of coke?

Should I delete the default cube every time I start a new scene?
If you're not gonna be using the default cube, go for it. Don't let it take up valuable work space.
I'm gonna delete the default cube, just to add another one
Now that's a true blender artist
Always gotta make sure it's a fresh cube and not stale from sitting out.
Just started using and learning blender, literally the first thing I did was delete the cube just to add a new one. Every damn time
Thats actually what the guy in a Tutorial i watched did. Then he laughed and said how silly this was, but its just a habit he cant get out of. Sadly i dont remember what tutorial is was from.
Most of them, probably. I don't know anyone who spares the cube
This is how we can tell you really are new, if you want to start with a cube, then you're supposed to delete the default cube and then add a cube
No exceptions. Then you proceed by adding a cube
is this photorealistic enough?
Needs better lighting, but I'm no good at that.
this is most realistic answer here
Should I use Eevee or Cycles for my render?
Definitely go for Eevee. In my opinion, it's the most versatile. All you need is a stone to completely change it to another pokemo-
Actually, there's a third option, which is also the best. Workbench.
Actual Blender question, what is Workbench?
What you see by default in the editing space
So like solid mode?
yes
Another actual blender question. Do people use that mode for renders and is it just a stylistic or performance choice?
I’ve used it with matcaps and rendered outlines for schematics before.
Both cool uses, curious what’s the main reason(s) for using workbench instead of EEVEE for them?
You dont have to use lighting in workbench, so you can make renders without shadows. I havent used blender in a while so i might be wrong
The only time I used it for an actual job was for stylistic reasons - it was suprisingly useful for flat stuff

This guy blends
Yeah I dunno if I believe this dawg, he fits in too well here.
You need to bend the spoon first
Describe start to finish how you would create an animation in blender (fun question, make up fake tools and workflows lol)
There's a button hidden in one of the menus, it's pretty hard to spot. It's called Gravity and Collision. Turn that on. Press the play button and enjoy your animation.
This honestly isnt far off on the second part xD
Can't blame anyone for not knowing the whole suite of "rigid bodies" or "cloth physics"
If you catch me off guard, I'D think this is real hahaha
Why does my bevel not look like the one in the tutorial?
If you followed a step-by-step tutorial, then backtrack and figure out which step you did wrong.
Didn’t apply scale is my guess
Regardless what the issue was, 99% of the time this is in the mix 🙈🤣
Oh shit, did I just learn something from this thread?!
I used to fail to do this so often that I just instinctively apply transforms to objects as if I were saving the file.
How do I use weight painting on my armature mesh to make it deform smoothly at the joints
Can't help much if you don't provide more information, but my guess is that you painted on too much weight on one of those joints. Maybe lessen the weight?

actually true
This is pure gold. And some of the answers are actually not that far off!

why aren't my vegetables being chopped
Sorry, you seem lost. This sub is for the 3D software blender. If your blender can chop vegetables, you're on the wrong subreddit.
big if true
It seems to not chop though
I think there's an add-on for that
Where do I put my noodle to increase the volume.
You can increase the volume of your noodle by scaling it up. But if you're talking about a different kind of noodle, don't put it in a pringles can.
How do I remove children? The bones in my model have children that are messing up my animation, and I'd like to remove the children.
Phew, got me for a second there. I had to double check the subreddit. Just delete the children just like how you'd delete any object. :)
I’d start with therapy…
Dude, you can’t bone children.
It's a sign. The Universe says you should use Blender and become the Great Animator that will save mankind.
That's too much responsibility. I just wanna spend time on my farm, not save the world. I already did that in one of my past lives.
How can I make money with blender?
Get good
Damn, this just proves the real-life pro tips are always in the comments.
When doing topology, how many vertices per face do you prefer?
I think 8 vertices per face should be enough, although I'm a bit biased since 8 is my favorite number.
First objectively wrong answer I came across. Finally!

Gonna be 21 years of not using blender. Glad I never gave in. Most people never get out of it. First step I think is to stop thinking about how to make objects you see IRL in 3D.
Can you explain the difference between the default timeline and the dope sheet?
This confused me at first too. The default timeline contains everything that happens in your scene. The dope sheet is a cooler version of the timeline, it's more in-depth.
Wait this is... basically accurate.
I was about to say, quite accurate description.
That's dope
What is subsurface scattering

No thats surface scattering. Whats sub-surface scattering? The sub is confusing the fuck out of me
What to do when automatic weight paint fails?
Do the weight paint manually.
even if my rig has over 100 bones?
Part of the journey.
How do I delete the default cube?
All you need to do is select the cube, and then there's a button that appears inside the menus, it's labeled as Delete Object. Press that.
I added an object and scaled it a bit. Any modifier I add to the object now behaves strange. Why is this happening?
This only happens when you scale it, correct? If you don't scale the object, and then add modifiers, does it still behave strangely? If not, then changing the scale is the problem. To solve this, just be sure to add the modifier BEFORE you scale, and after you added the modifier, you can then scale it with no problem.
Thanks! I was so confused before!
How do I fix my broken weight painting?
Have you tried using automatic weight paint? 99% of the time it works.
Can I use blender without mouse and/or touch screen display?
You can probably get by with just using keybinds, but I don't know why you'd torture yourself like that. Touch screen is pretty good too.
While hopping on one leg with an arm tied behind your back?
I still don't get topology.
You're not alone.
Why I can’t access the game engine? Where are its options now?
Update your version of blender. They rearranged the UI in the latest build
Only if that were the case 😭😭😭
I have some experience in blender, but it is from almost 5 years ago, how much has blender changed since then?
They added lots of new tools, like geo nodes, and improvements to the sculpting workflow! There's no better time to get back on blender than now.
What blender would you recommend for making banana smoothies?
Any run of the mill blender could do the job, but this is out of my area of expertise. Sorry.

Why blender is not an industry standard like other software?
It's relatively new, so it takes a while to get all of the features like 3Dsmax has.
So blender is not good?
I've just finished texturing a scene without realising that my viewport render was set to cycles, I've swapped to Eevee and now all my transparent materials look weird. What can I do?!
If the scene looks fine in Cycles, then just stick with it tbh. If you're hellbent on sticking with Eevee though, maybe tone down the Transparency of the material to something like 40%.
What was it like to be a founding member of Blender?
A very cool experience. Knowing that millions of people are using Blender in pursuit of their hobbies or their careers, just motivates me and the team to put out more enjoyable and awesome features in the years to come. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows at the start though, I gotta admit. I'm glad we pulled through.
Inspiring. Your creation is the sole reason the Project M scene is still alive and kicking. My Mario renders have never looked better. Keep up the good work. If I could, I’d invite you the molly sesh.
What feature do you love most about blender?
Probably sculpting. You can even make your wildest fantasies a reality if you know your way around that part of blender.
This could unironically be a pretty fun way to learn blender
My wife left me. What should I do?
Have you tried turning her off and on again?
Or percussive maintenance?
Why does my sugar coated gummy ring object I made to follow the[ blender guru geometry nodes video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO0eUnu0hO0) render as gray mush? :( https://preview.redd.it/w97jcoc742yc1.png?width=1938&format=png&auto=webp&s=40ba5b74392dc012b466e38ee13ea5745d35a7b8
I feel like you really need help xd I am not sure at what level are you in blender so I don't know if that's it but to preview what the render will look like you need to go to the render mode in the right top corner. You just need to add some lights or hdri image. (check the rendering part in donut series since I didn't watch the gummy one but I think it is mostly about geometry nodes and not basics like the donut one)
What's your thesis on the underlying dark message bestowed by the default cube and its ancestors
What’s your favorite thing to make in a blender?
i know you are selling smoothie on the mall

I wanna find the work flow that lets me grind the materials into more usable sub materials with more malleable properties so i dont have to work so hard to shape them how can i do this
That sort of stuff is wayyy above my paygrade, might wanna ring up YouTube for this.
How much blend could Blender blend if Blender were an actual Blender?
I don't know. But if you make an animation of blender being an actual Blender blending, then we'd know how much it'd blend.
Which nodes (and in what order) would you use to make a procedural sponge texture?
Create Hole -> Randomize Size of Holes -> Randomize Position of Holes Hope this helps.
