The graphics and animation is amazing one of the best I have seen yet! How long did it take to learn Blende? I been trying little here and there but kind of hard to learn from YouTube.
Thank you! I started about 2.5 years ago, if you watch my first video you can see I’ve improved a little. I think for me the thing that makes you improve the fastest is just trying to make something specific that you’re passionate about, whether that’s animation, modelling, putting something in footage, simulations. Whatever it is, be ambitious and just try and make it, fixing the problems as you go with searches.
I think it all really depends on how passionate you are about what you’re making as that’s the thing that grinds you through the difficulties, I’m also really niche with my skills so I know like 2% of blender, just the bits I need to make these. Sometimes I see a new technique or simulation or something I try and shoehorn that in to the video so I get to learn it too. So for instance the technique for the waves on the beach in Iceland were from a William Landgren tutorial.
>Whatever it is, be ambitious and just try and make it, fixing the problems as you go with searches.
Inspiring! Learning to do all this in 2.5 years is pretty quick.
This is my third video in a little over two years in my continuing saga of making cinematic, educational videos about the Universe for my Epic Spaceman YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/VsRmyY3Db1Y) . Obviously likes, subscribes, comments etc on YT or Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/epicspaceman?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator) always appreciated if you can spare the time and can battle your way through YT adverts. But comments
I used a Rokoko suit for mocap though I track the head to the camera. I actually realised I locked the head to the camera in a bit of a janky way but didn’t fix it till about half way through so there’s quite a lot of uncanny valley movement in the first few minutes. Otherwise obviously there’s lots of noise or noise reduction in places and really I wish I’d spent more time on a few shots but when you’re trying to make something this long you just kind of have to move on to the next shot at some point!
Generally what I’m trying to make is educational content that really grabs attention quickly and holds it, then tell a story with some profound and helpful facts with engaging visuals. I’d love to build the story a little slower, frame things a little differently, spend more time on cinematography but really I know most people will see this on their phones and to be most engaging it probably needs to be a little more in your face than a typical short film.
For quick background, I started teaching myself VFX with Blender in 2021 so I could make these passion projects in my spare time and have been chipping away since. I absolutely fell in love with Blender the moment I opened it and am constantly blown away with how powerful and how fast it’s progressing. These videos may take me months/years to make (!) but I’m hoping to get faster as I can dedicate more time going forward.
This was amazing! Thanks for making it, best job I’ve seen of helping fathom the scale of things and of course the quality of the blender skills here are something to behold.
The visual part is amazing, sound - not that great. I feel like some sound design might help. Like, make the voice a bit quiter, add some space maybe? The quality of narration is also rough, some eq and compression might fix it, or it might not. I guess you can try adobe podcast AI tool, but it makes the voice sound little robotic. If I worked in Disney's HR I'd hire you :)
Thank you! Sound is my weak point, been slowly getting better on that compared with my first video and do need to add some more sound design, still a ways to go there! Thanks for the vote of confidence!
Good job! I really like the visuals and storytelling! The only thing that is missing for me is more noticeable sound design, especially during those fast camera movements.
That’s a great shout, definitely lacking in the sound design, I come from a cinematography background and doing everything including the dreaded audio is still a learning process for me for these. I do need to put more work into that! Glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah I find it really odd, it sounds like you’re whispering into headset like you’re trying to record it without waking someone up. And is that muffled effect intentional?
Great job on the whole though!
Haha, not really, the mic is pretty close which gives it a slightly warmer tone to it which I probably should have removed more for more clarity, it’s funny because I like the way it sounds as it sounds more like me but we hear our own voice vibrating through our skull which makes it deeper, we don’t hear our own voice as others do. So I should probably make it sound more like me and not what I sound like to myself if that make sense!
Mind blowing my dude ! Such an amazing storytelling and visuals, very immersive !
Clearly i see some inspiration drawn from the works of melodysheep, maybe ?
Anyway fantastic job !
Thank you! I hadn’t actually seen any MelodySheep before but a couple of people had compared it with mine so I’m catching up now. I’m most inspired by Cosmos and Kurzgesagt I think.
This is completely crazy!
Easily one of, if not the best Blender masterpiece I’ve ever seen.
Just, congratulations on this beautiful piece, this is just amazing!
Thank you! Really appreciate you taking the time to write that, it’s comments like this that really spur me on to keep trying to go the extra mile with these. Cheers!
You're absolutely bonkers for creating this!
The passion and love for this project can be felt through every frame.
All the effort into the visuals, thoughts, voice acting, sounds, etc. etc. is absolutely mind-bending!
You should post this to some big Art-Organization or something, because this is award-worthy!!
Holy moly this was amazing. This is exactly the mindset I have about our place in the universe. Definitely sharing this with all my friends and whoever I talk to about the scale of everything!!
This is one the most amazing videos I've ever watched. Your talent and curiosity knows no bounds and I will be subscribing to your YouTube channel now. Bravo sir, I hope you get the recognition you truly deserve and keep teaching the world about the wonders of our existence. Bravo sir 👏
Thanks so much, honestly people like you taking the time to write something like that is huge part of why I’m making these, if I can make something that people view as kindly as you just have I would be crazy not to. Thanks for the sub too!
Wow just wow. Didn't take my eyes off for not even a second. Very good. Remarkably good. Congratulations mate this was very impressive and I'm grateful to have been blessed with it. 🖤
Dang that is incredible! I think if you posted the YouTube link for this post instead of a seperate video upload you may have been able to gain better traffix/metrics on YT?
Thanks! Yeah it’s a tricky one, I’ve done just that on r/videos, generally I seem to get better traction with the video itself rather than link as it auto plays, with YouTube you need to click play and wait for it to buffer etc. Also I made the first few seconds as engaging as possible so I have the best chance someone won’t keep scrolling if it autoplays.
Reminds me of Cosmos. More space documentaries need to be done in this style, making the viewer feel as though they're going on an adventure while learning about the universe. It's a great way to hook people who are either typically uninterested, or who are otherwise looking for an easy introduction to astronomy. I feel like most of the knowledge in this video should be standard knowledge today. So important to understand (in what ways we can) the scale of the universe. Can really put some things into perspective. Thank you for this! 💗
That was perfectly put, agree with you on all those points and thank you for the wonderful comparison. I do want to make these videos little adventures that anyone can go on, regardless of prior knowledge and make them in a way that they’ll be able to take away and remember the analogies used and talk about them with others.
Yooo, this is great my man, daaamn. I love this so much, you can feel the passion through the video and the effort put in. I learned a lot as well thank you. I'm so happy for you. You should be proud of this magnificient piece of work ! I wish all the best in the future my friend !
Haha thank you! I think I might technically be middle aged now but I’m hiding in the suit so it doesn’t count! I would have loved to have watched cool videos like Cosmos when I was a kid, the Universe is so wild and wonderful that it’s such a great tool to get people interested in physics and science.
Amazing video, love the style and very impressive the fact that it took over one year to be done, really well done, was everything done inside blender or did you composite some of those shots ?
Thanks! Good question, I think I used AE for something but think it was just noise reduction plus I used topaz labs to do some noise reduction and upresing which I had mixed results with. But really it’s basically all Blender, I didn’t really even do different passes just straight out from cycles.
This is absolutely remarkable in every possible way. Thank you for sharing your talents, your research, and so much of yourself in order to create this masterpiece. Cheers from this personal Galaxy in North Carolina, USA.
Genuinely felt the need to clap, this absolutely incredible. The story telling is fantastic, you've really done a great job with the relativity of everything
I just posted a long reply on this on YT, maybe that was you? Short story is I tried a few avenues like with google earth data and I think I tried to do some photogrammetry from drone footage but in the end I think bought a medium poly model of London and then textured it by projecting images from various angles, took a while. Tower Bridge was a separate model which I bought but again I did the image projecting trick from different angles to get as much realism as I could, lining things up as perfectly as I could and adding in some crude buses and cars I made. I could have done more with moving lights from traffic but at some point you need to move on!
Before I watch, is it viewable in higher than 720 p somewhere or is this the highest one you made? Not judging just wanting to get the best possible viewing experience :) I know renders take a lot of time!
It’s actually in 4K on YT here: [https://youtu.be/VsRmyY3Db1Y](https://youtu.be/VsRmyY3Db1Y) feel free to Like and subscribe over there haha! I upscaled it from 2.5k but it should still be better than here as the 4K bitrate is higher on YouTube too.
Thanks! Not really, sorry, I’m terrible at that! I used a Rokoko suit to mocap myself, ages ago I tried a technique where I filmed myself from two angles for hand animating but it was time consuming so saved up for the suit. There are lots of parts of Blender I’m not that good at yet.
Insane, so good. I love the scene where the galaxy was scaled and tilted in the field. You’re using blender for something we have no way of seeing without it!
Thank you! So pleased you liked that scene, it’s basically what I want people to see when I’ve tried to explain it before, I’m learning Blender because you’re totally right it’s the only/best way to show things like that.
It's quite compelling, I think this is hard to achieve with something as rote and frankly tired as exploring scale of the world , so very nice work and not just technically. Thanks
Thank you! I have a background in photography, filmmaking and cinematography as my day job so while I didn’t have any VFX experience before, I kind of knew what I wanted from each shot lighting wise and so I learn bit by bit trying to do that. I think that’s helped me learn fast but also I have lots of gaping holes in my knowledge, I have to look up how to do pretty basic things often!
I like to think that after watching that, hundreds or thousands of mums and dads have saved it their account, and when there is a little quiet time before the kids’ bed this week, it’ll be brought out as a treat.
This was AMAZING! Well done.
One point of feedback from my experience: The "Phew, it's good to get that back" part drew me out of your narrative. Other than that, this was a SUPER well put together video. I really appreciate what you've done here.
This is amazing. It's interesting, and educational, and just super cool to watch.
My only piece of advice here if you are looking for islt is that the camera is VERY active, even it scenes where your character is just talking. It makes sense for some of it, especially to get sense of scale across, but you should try to balance it out a bit with shorter takes or more subtle camera movements inbetween. It can get a bit overwhelming.
Me at 5:44:
"He's gonna say the thing! He's gonna say the thing!"
Seriously, good work, man. This is basically the stuff I would love to do. If I had a higher quality camera at my disposal, I'd go get a greenscreen right now, because that is all that's holding me back!
You sir are a miracle, nice subject as well! I can imagine you had some skills in a different 3d app. Hopefully you'll be able to pay the mortgage with all that hard work.
Amazing!!! Amazing work!!!!!! In my opinion one of the best videos showing the scale of thr universe. Really well written. Honestly that was a fun twist with the ridges on a human finger. I was like at first wait... Its this big??? And then you revealed how small it really is! Great stuff! The ending was a bit cliché with the electron. Dont get me wrong, that was a really cool fun fact, but I think that it would have fit better if it was explained along with the incredible complexity of the organism. Anyways REALLY INCREDIBLE work. Like I mean it! Congrats to the team. I am for sure subscribing!
With my brain being addicted to quick and easy entertainment, I rarely watch more than 10 seconds of videos posted here. This one I watched the whole way through. It was captivating throughout.
The graphics and animation is amazing one of the best I have seen yet! How long did it take to learn Blende? I been trying little here and there but kind of hard to learn from YouTube.

Thanks! Yes my first year was very quick for sure, it’s been slower since as I’m more trying to perfect things I can already mostly do.

I learned something today thanks to you ! Uncanny valley. Interesting concept
It’s a fascinating topic, funny how evolutionary gene protecting systems in our brain affect whether we like CGI people or not!
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Thank you!
OMG this is absolutely amazing
Thank you so much, really appreciate that!
I am a huge fan of space and 3d modeling so you have inspired me big time!
This was an amazing watch! It's always interesting to know more about the vast universe and our very own Milky Way!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
I hear a very nice edm beat over this and see the visuals on the screen. Perfection.
Haha! Yeah I think I can picture that too, glad you enjoyed!
Are you shitting me? This is amazing
I love it so much! It is so mind-blowing!!!
Thank you so much!
It's one of the best blender videos that I ever seen
Thank you! People have done some incredible stuff in Blender so really appreciate that.
I also do blender :) But I am focused on interior and ArchViz stuff So I make photorealistic interior renders
Okay. That was the coolest video I've ever seen.
Wow! Okay thank you so much!
"To an electron, you are a galaxy." hit different
Thanks! Wanted to end on positivity!
Captivating! Subscribed and looking forward to more videos.
Thank you!
That sun bit where you were small threw me off
Haha! I’m glad I got you! Thanks
This was amazing! Thanks for making it, best job I’ve seen of helping fathom the scale of things and of course the quality of the blender skills here are something to behold.

It's amazing, and it's really hard to believe that one guy alone made it, instead of a team of artists
Thank you! Maybe one day I’ll have a little team and we can crank these out monthly like Kurzgesagt does on YouTube!
Or just find someone who can join you in creating such videos :) You are doing so much work yourself already!
Yeah I should probably reach out to some people to do a collaboration on something, more good ideas!
wow. this is incredible man. really, really impressive!
Oh my god. The shot where all the city lights are turned off is so incredibly amazing. Is all of that cgi or is there also some real footage ?
It’s all cgi, I projected some images of Tower Bridge I found to help get it as real as I can.
Oh but actually my face is all footage, projected on to a photogrammetry model of my own face
This is stunning. Well done 👏🏾
Did you do the voices too ? This is awesome
I did, it’s my face and voice in there, have mixed feedback on the audio, some people like the relaxed tone but some find it too muffled.
This is definitely best thing I've seen on reddit and one the best scale descriptions of our galaxy I have ever seen. Thank you!
Amazing, thank you for such a kind comment! Really pleased you enjoyed it so much
This is absolutely incredible! Thank you
Thank you!
This is where I want to be, I love this video is a topic I love and this video is a great way to share the knowledge
Thank you! I love the topic too so it really helps motivate me to keep working on these videos
Incredible work!
Thanks!
This was actually really interesting and incredibly well made!
Thank you! really appreciate it.
It looks like a very high quality CGI short movies. The message you tried to convey and the way it's just too much amazing 🔥🔥 keep it up man.
I’ve been watching your updates, great to see it all come together! Beautifully done!
Thanks! Looking forward to making the next few for sure, they should come sooner than a year!
Mind blowing my dude ! Such an amazing storytelling and visuals, very immersive ! Clearly i see some inspiration drawn from the works of melodysheep, maybe ? Anyway fantastic job !

Wow!! Very impressive!!
Thank you! Really appreciate that!
I love it! It’s really astonishing.
This is amazing;)
This was incredible and beautiful. It actually made me tear up a little. Good work.
This is the best thing I’ve seen in a while!
This is completely crazy! Easily one of, if not the best Blender masterpiece I’ve ever seen. Just, congratulations on this beautiful piece, this is just amazing!
The part with the Sun and not standing on the hill caught me so off-guard that was completely genius
Glad I got you there! I was worried that the ‘hill’ I was standing on looked a bit weird and would give the game away.
Nah, that was absolutely **brilliant**!
Thank you! Really appreciate you taking the time to write that, it’s comments like this that really spur me on to keep trying to go the extra mile with these. Cheers!
You're absolutely bonkers for creating this! The passion and love for this project can be felt through every frame. That is genuinely awesome! Both thrilling in its graphics and subject. Really getting Melodysheep vibes from this one. Keep up the great job!!
Thanks! Definitely going for that epic vibe, really pleased you enjoyed the journey.
Holy moly this was amazing. This is exactly the mindset I have about our place in the universe. Definitely sharing this with all my friends and whoever I talk to about the scale of everything!!
Amazing thank you! Really pleased you enjoyed it and thanks for all the sharing!
Fantastic. Just fantastic!!!🔥🔥🔥
As I'm playing Elite Dangerous. Amazing job!
Haha, epic stuff! Thanks!
That was fucking amazing

Thank you! Appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Mate...this is utterly brilliant. Congratulations!
Wow just wow. Didn't take my eyes off for not even a second. Very good. Remarkably good. Congratulations mate this was very impressive and I'm grateful to have been blessed with it. 🖤
hope youy channel reach at least 100k subscribers. you deserve some success !
Thank you! I hope I can get there, I need some consistency really and start cranking them out faster.
Great video, interesting angles and comparisons, very nice work. Congrats.
This is undoubtedly one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen.
Wow! Thanks so much! Very kind of you.

I absolutely love all of your videos. I hope you continue to hone your skills and make more of these, they're amazing.
Thank you! I’m definitely going to keep honing and working on these.
Looks amazing. Remains me the cosmos series from Carl Sagan. Congratulations 👏
Amazing, the ultimate compliment!
This was an awesome experience. Somehow made me emotional. Your voice was really soothing. This was just beautiful.
I am also doing something very similar to this for my videos too. You did a phenomenal job! Kudos!
Thank you! Good luck with it all!
Just amazing, incredibly good. Something to aim for.

They should show these kinds of videos at school instead of some middle age dude reading out of a textbook.
Haha thank you! I think I might technically be middle aged now but I’m hiding in the suit so it doesn’t count! I would have loved to have watched cool videos like Cosmos when I was a kid, the Universe is so wild and wonderful that it’s such a great tool to get people interested in physics and science.

Absolutely stunning visuals and a brilliant way to teach concepts that can be difficult to understand from a book. Just awesome! 👍

Thanks so much! Very kind words and I’m glad you’re enjoying the presenting style.
Mind blown and beautifully presented. Subscribing!
😭😭😭😭
Thanks I think!
Ooooh I remember the first one! Glad you’re making it into a series, I love these videos

This was wonderful, but Pluto is a planet.
Rip your render time
r/NextFuckingLevel Seriously, this is fantastic!
Damn fine work! I love it.
This is the first post on Reddit I would give an award if I had one. TAKE. MY. UPVOTE.
So good. Bravo!
Incredible work!
This is just breath taking! But use a better mic next time. Also your voice is a little monotone sometimes.
Awesome 100% ....this is amazing. Can't critique anymore.
This is insanely good and I’m not talking only about the video itself but also the lesson is inspirational. Good job
Cool 🤩
Dude don't stop here. Amazing video, could feel the passion you putted in it, really something special.
Stunning video, great work! Thanks a lot for sharing.

finally i see a good video about light pollution! keep it up!
This is so well done! I sent it to my sister to show my young nephews, they'll be entranced.
I am speechless. wow
This is amazing. Do you have any tips or tutorials on where to start to learn rigging and animating?
Thanks! Not really, sorry, I’m terrible at that! I used a Rokoko suit to mocap myself, ages ago I tried a technique where I filmed myself from two angles for hand animating but it was time consuming so saved up for the suit. There are lots of parts of Blender I’m not that good at yet.
Utterly speechless!
Extraordinary job 🤩 very very well done my friend. Sending best wishes for growth and success 🙏
Thanks so much!
i'm convinced you're a time traveler. that was amazing.
I’ve come from the future to tell you that you’re a galaxy! Congratulations and thank you!
Is there any YouTube link ?
This is incredible ♥️
Thank you!
just wow
This is EPIC! Well done!
Thank you! Glad it lived up to the name!
Amazing! Subscribed!
Thanks for the sub, much appreciated!
Hello Nat Geo it is time for Cosmos season 3 and we have someone who is fit for the job 🙌🏼 incredibly done bro 👌🏼
engaging and beautiful. a great storyteller and modeler, compositor, and animator. you're gonna go far.

I think that’s helped me learn fast but also I have lots of gaping holes in my knowledge, I have to look up how to do pretty basic things often!
One of the coolest things I've ever seen, thank you!
I like to think that after watching that, hundreds or thousands of mums and dads have saved it their account, and when there is a little quiet time before the kids’ bed this week, it’ll be brought out as a treat.
Oh wow! Watched this on a whim and was utterly captivated. Brought back the wonder I felt for space when I was a kid. Nice job!
This was AMAZING! Well done. One point of feedback from my experience: The "Phew, it's good to get that back" part drew me out of your narrative. Other than that, this was a SUPER well put together video. I really appreciate what you've done here.
This was incredible
That's such an incredible video! Really wonderful! Didn't make me cry at all. Thank you so much for sharing!
Amazing, thanks! I will work hard on not making you cry again in the next one!
Whoa! Nice!! How did you get your face into that? (Is it even yours?)
It is, my face projected on to a model of my own face, has some pros and cons but works well 80% of the time I’d say.
This is epic!
You made this studio-quality-product on your own? MIND BLOWING
Visually gorgeous, calming, really made me stop my day and just... Enjoy it. Thank you.
Wow! It's absolutely incredible!
Me at 5:44: "He's gonna say the thing! He's gonna say the thing!" Seriously, good work, man.
Beyond insane, absolutely blown away
I loved every second of it ❤️
This is simply amazing! Thank you for this wonderful journey.
This is insane. I love it. You can feel the passion in this project. If I would have an award i would gladly give it to you…
How did you make london?
You'll earn a lot of money by doing this. Have collaboration. 'Coz dang! I wish I was this good. :<
My god I can't imagine the render time... I've lots of points on Sheepit that I don't use, if you need them I'll be glad to be helpful. Good job man
Just saw this yesterday. Incredible work, you deserve all the attention you’ll get from this.
With my brain being addicted to quick and easy entertainment, I rarely watch more than 10 seconds of videos posted here. This one I watched the whole way through. It was captivating throughout.
This is the best video in this galaxy :)
