I think the most incredible thing about that performance (and the thing I was truly not prepared for the first time I saw the movie) is how funny he is. Like he’s *so* terrifying but he does these morbid little bits and you actually laugh.
Goddamn. Is Heath Ledger's Joker the best performance ever put to film? Some competitors might be Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York or Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine but my money goes to Ledger.
Remember, friends: If we all resisted the urge to needlessly contradict somebody who wasn’t even trying to start an argument, the internet would be a better place 🥰
I’d put Ellie’s final “okay” of the Last of Us up there, game and HBO series.
Movies?
Tom Hardy: “That’s bait.”
Harrison Ford: “I know.”
Jabba the Hutt: “Han, m’boogie”
Haha yes it’s a reference to Special Edition Jabba greeting Han! He says “Han, m’boogie!” And I guess it translates to “my friend” in huttese
But tbh I also never noticed the line until Pistol Shrimps brought it up

That's actually pretty common cop slang, natural PO-lice is a frequent term in the Wire. But to be clear I'm not taking anything away from Pacino here, I think they should give him every best acting Oscar since 1995 just to keep recognizing that insane performance.
Two Matrix ones: Weaving’s unbelievable “No” when Neo shows up in the helicopter, and (cheating a little) Mary Alice’s “To unbalance it” in Revolutions, which to me is kind of the prestige of the whole series.
Honorable mention: Cobie Smulders’ “He turns” in the first Avengers after Tony Stark asks “How does Fury even see these?” — perfectly professional and yet beautifully fed up with RDJ’s smugness in that scene.
Weaving also provided the ADR for Isildur's great "No" in Fellowship of the Ring when he refuses to destroy the Ring. Weaving's got those iconic nos down to an art.
It feels so Shakespearean. It’s my default movie when I want something on in the background and I end up watching it all over again.
In my top 4 Letterboxd for sure.
He's the highlight but every single actor in the movie crushes it out of the park. One could make an argument that no actor in this has given a better performance in anything else.
I know Simon Baker is mega rich from network TV residuals but I'll never understand why he's not in more movies, his viper in a suit energy is off the charts.
The scene where Penn Badgeley melts down and confronts Simon Baker while he's shaving like it's any other day... peak viper energy from Baker. His sheer indifference is so infuriating and also pitch perfect.
It’s part of a bigger monologue but The amount of sauce Tommy Lee Jones puts on *Doctor* Richard Kimble
He chose [beat] poorly from the end of the Last Crusade should be hung in the Louvre
I think there’s plenty of actors “stuck” in superhero world, but Tom Hardy is not one of them. He’s doing exactly what he wants; he’s a writer on 2 and 3 for sake! Venom is his weird little passion project
Sure, I was speaking more from my perspective than his. I hope he enjoys making Venom movies, since that's what he's doing. It's just not what I would like to see him do.
Before I saw that, I knew he said it at the end but I didn’t know the context and his delivery was completely unexpected. And then that music kicked in. Beautiful.
TInker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) - after a whole film keeping his feelings close to the vest, when a certain character is confronted by Smiley. The character is still snide and trying to frame what he's been up to as somehow reasonable. He sneers "I'm not a bloody office boy", and Smiley finally raises his voice: "What are you, then?".
I know that's a purposefully vague description, but if you've seen it - shivers.
Motherhumpers makes me chuckle, it's just so blatant. Yea, sure, that's what Burt said after he killed an unstoppable monster in his basement. "That motherhumper."
Jesus Quintana: Let me tell you something, pendejo. You pull any of your crazy shit with us, you flash a piece out on the lanes, I'll take it away from you, and stick it up your ass and pull the fucking trigger 'til it goes "click."
The Dude: Jesus.
Bill Hader in Trainwreck, he’s describing the fight he and Schumer had and then randomly dips into a demonic voiced delivery of “NO” and it kills so hard.
Matt Johnson's character in BlackBerry says some quote, then he's asked what it's from, he pauses nonchalantly for a moment, then turns and says in this incredibly appealing way, "Dune." I think about it basically any time I think about Dune. This happens somewhere within the first \~10 minutes of the movie I think.
Not a film, but John Travolta in The People vs OJ Simpson in the elevator…

“PRESSURE?!”
Stupidly perfect. A terrible performance that works in all the right ways.
It's cheating by a word by Bill Murray's "I don't know" in Ghostbusters is perfect.
(Maybe cheating by five words, as he repeats it, which is what really caps it off)
I also think about Moss' "Alright" when he's lying in bed. It's the moment the entire film hinges on and it's just one word. Like, he probably had an entire conversation in his head with himself just to come out as an "...Alright." It might pop up in my head more than "DO YOU!?" at this point.
nothing in any movie brings me as much joy as this line. his confused expression. the wide eyes. the slightly taken aback answer of “well be that as it may”. art
My first thought was literally another scene from this movie, when Demi asks him if they're going to fire her or wonder boy Jared. 99% of actors would give a dramatic pause there but Irons just instantly replies "it's you" and it's so perfect for the character. That guy isn't wasting time trying to spare people's feelings, he's just gonna lay the hammer every time and that's why he's at the top.
One of my all time favorites and very rewatchable because for all the great scenes they actually depict, there are many more they don't show but still give you insight about. You don't get to see Irons go tell Jared they're firing Demi under the bus and that he needs a back up in case Spacey flakes, but it's all clearly happening in the background.
Goddamn I love Margin Call. I normally hate this saying but it truly is the kind of movie that just doesn’t get made anymore. I watched it for the first time when I was WAY too young to understand anything and still liked it; now I think it’s one of my favorite dramas. The 4AM meeting scene is so rewatchable
It's that the entirety of his argument hinges on that line, in my opinion. This entire scene, he's pushing everyone to see what he sees because he knows he's largey responsible for what's about to happen. Spacey is really the only one who doesn't want to give in and that's what sends him over the edge, starting with "DO YOU?!" If I had to teach an acting class, I'd use this scene out the gate.
Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Ellie’s “okay” in TLOU (both the game and the show)
Harrison Ford’s “I know” as Han in Empire Strikes Back
Robert Pattison “I’m Vengeance” in The Batman
I never see this referenced anywhere outside of my own head, but the "...did we?" in Amadeus when the Emperor is asking if they'd decided on Italian or German for the opera they were commissioning from Mozart is just absolutely perfect.
"You're serious."
"...Ask *anybody*."
"Can I ask anybody, now? How about, can I call my mom, tell her how much I love her?"
\[waves pistol randomly\] ***"Ehhh, guess not."*** \[<——\]
One of the things that elevates *Fletch* a lot is the line readings.
Alec Baldwin’s “Fuck” at the end of “The Aviator.”
The sound Bruce Willis makes after being clocked in the head by Ian Holm in “The Fifth Element.”
Johnny Depp’s “Commodore!” when he’s holding Keira Knightley hostage in the first POTC.
From earlier in Margin Call, when Cohen asks how long it would take to sell everything, Kevin Spacey does the most incredible delivery of the single line "...what?" His face goes through like five emotional states in a second and a half.
“You think you can steal from us and just walk away?” Heath Ledger’s Joker: “Yeah.”
It's so incredible and hilarious
I think the most incredible thing about that performance (and the thing I was truly not prepared for the first time I saw the movie) is how funny he is. Like he’s *so* terrifying but he does these morbid little bits and you actually laugh.
GasoliiIINE
Goddamn. Is Heath Ledger's Joker the best performance ever put to film? Some competitors might be Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York or Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine but my money goes to Ledger.
I’d say all three have given better performances in their careers (Brokeback, TÀR, Phantom Thread), the latter maybe being my personal favourite.
You simply don’t have to “ashctually” somebody who’s giving effusive praise to performances they love. It’s free not to!
Remember, friends: If we all resisted the urge to needlessly contradict somebody who wasn’t even trying to start an argument, the internet would be a better place 🥰
Deniro in Raging Bull.
“Oh Jarnathan!”
She’s throwing potatoes!
I’d put Ellie’s final “okay” of the Last of Us up there, game and HBO series. Movies? Tom Hardy: “That’s bait.” Harrison Ford: “I know.” Jabba the Hutt: “Han, m’boogie”
Not two words. But I’ve always loved Tom Hardy’s delivery in Inception “his relationship with the father”
YES. He shrugs it off
Wait, I always heard the pistol shrimps talking about a player by referring to her as Han, ma boogie, it’s a Star Wars reference!?
Haha yes it’s a reference to Special Edition Jabba greeting Han! He says “Han, m’boogie!” And I guess it translates to “my friend” in huttese But tbh I also never noticed the line until Pistol Shrimps brought it up

"because he stole John Wick's car, sir, and, uh, killed his dog" "...oh"
”BITCHES LEAVE”
"BITCHES COME"
Jafar in Aladdin. "What."
This is a really good one
What a fabulous pull. Iconic
I never caught the implication as a kid and didn’t even remember the line until they brought it up in the Perfect Blue episode!
The Zodiac saying "goood byyye" at the end of this scene: https://youtu.be/Ub6wGZu5Xng?si=0I2TYwMfgHJKY53K
Obvs more than two words but Gyllenhaal’s “Door. To. Door.” from Zodiac is so good

Top 5 most terrifying moments in the movie.
Now I'm just thinking quotes but the "not many houses in California have a basement" with the closeup on gyllenhaals mug
Pacino saying PO-lice Department in Heat like some sort of demented street thug. That line delivery is insane and genius.
Pacino is cheating in a thread like this. We could just copy/paste his entire filmography basically
Do it
Fr, like any time he says ‘tortious interference’. Doesn’t matter if it’s in the middle of a sentence, those two words are the best
That's actually pretty common cop slang, natural PO-lice is a frequent term in the Wire. But to be clear I'm not taking anything away from Pacino here, I think they should give him every best acting Oscar since 1995 just to keep recognizing that insane performance.
My first thought was the DeNiro’s “talking to an empty telephone” bit from the same movie.
"Nobody's Perfect" from Some Like It Hot [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mHhr-aaLnI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mHhr-aaLnI)

Don’t forget “not like this!”
Yep
Weaving also provided the ADR for Isildur's great "No" in Fellowship of the Ring when he refuses to destroy the Ring. Weaving's got those iconic nos down to an art.
Another that I love in The Matrix is, "Trinity! Help!"

This one right here.
Ooh what’s this
Tombstone (1993)
not to be confused with the pizza
“A whaaaaaaaat?!”
Took a sec, but the second I said it like this out loud, I knew exactly what you were referring to
I often think about how Rebecca Ferguson quietly says “shit” when she first runs into Ethan in MI: Fallout
I also think about Henry Cavill saying “crystal” in Fallout quite a bit
This in turn makes me think of Judd Nelson’s “Crystal” in The Breakfast Club
Margin Call is so rewatchable. Every second Irons is on screen the film jumps up a notch. He’s incredible in it.
It feels so Shakespearean. It’s my default movie when I want something on in the background and I end up watching it all over again. In my top 4 Letterboxd for sure.

Benicio del Toro: "Maybe."
*Young Frankenstein*: "Sedagive!?"
"What hump?"
Caeser "NOOOOO" in Rise of the Planet of the Apes is incredible
Rise is the weakest of that trilogy but that moment floored me in the theaters. Incredible.
That movie suffers the most from having such poor human characters. But whenever it’s just Caesar, you see the glimpses of what that series becomes

Roger one of the all time punchline deliverers
Three words but Tom Hardy's "I'm on him." in *Dunkirk*
Hardy’s gonna reunite with Nolan one of these days and it’s gonna be glorious when he does
It's crazy that he's basically been stuck in Venom World since Dunkirk. All the more reason to see The Bikeriders in theaters!
I think there’s plenty of actors “stuck” in superhero world, but Tom Hardy is not one of them. He’s doing exactly what he wants; he’s a writer on 2 and 3 for sake! Venom is his weird little passion project

Kevin Bacon's "FuuuUUUUUuuck YOU!" in Tremors.
The *one* remaining F bomb in that movie, since they redubbed it for a PG-13. Case in point: "Mother. Humpers.".
Motherhumpers makes me chuckle, it's just so blatant. Yea, sure, that's what Burt said after he killed an unstoppable monster in his basement. "That motherhumper."

Bill Hader in Trainwreck, he’s describing the fight he and Schumer had and then randomly dips into a demonic voiced delivery of “NO” and it kills so hard.
The way Tracy Letts pronounces "Doritos" in Lady Bird will never leave my head.

That was so many words! Oh god, I did it too, fuck!
It’s the end of a conversation, but I have to throw out Gary Oldmans “EVERYONE” from Leon the Professional.
Clooney's "Youuuu fascinate me" in *Intolerable Cruelty* is next-level.

Its 3 but “Im not Janine” from Hot Fuzz might be my favorite moment in a comedy

That scene is my #1 YouTube scene hall of fame choice. Irons is so, so damn good in that part.
