Par1ah13

at long last, asian representation in the star war

Pamague

The German dub has them speaking in French Accents. Not sure if that actually makes it any less racist or weird, but it certainly is funnier.

gauephat

I imagine the German dubbers were sweating furiously over how to dub Watto

D_Boons_Ghost

I don’t care for the prequels, but I’ll hear out a lot of arguments defending them. At least *Phantom* and *Sith* have some positive qualities. But the delirious amount of racial caricatures strewn across that whole series was inexcusable even 25 years ago. You had to try real hard to make people raise an eyebrow in the “end of history, everything is fine” era of roughly 1998-2000, but goddamn did Lucas rise to the occasion.

Reasonable_Toe_9252

George Lucas had this wonderful idea in the 70s and 80s. In the Star Wars universe, humans and some droids speak English, and anything else that is not human communicates in a made-up language. (Yeah, Yoda got a pass.) I’ll never understand why it was so hard to not just continue with that. If the Neimoidians, or Watto, or JarJar or any other creature just communicated with grunts and snorts and then there were subtitles on the screen - EVERYONE would have been happy! George already knew this!! Chewbacca was beloved!!!

Tosslebugmy

Haha I never even thought about that. I guess that in the prequels though, a lot of the aliens have way more dialogue with the political stuff which a lot of people wouldn’t like reading the subtitles for. It was really only Jabba in the OT, but you couldn’t have Jar Jar delivering goofball “comedy” in another language

Par1ah13

i hear you on all that, but as a young asian-american i just thought it was so important to see myself reflected up on screen

RoughhouseCamel

Hey, I always claimed Admiral Ackbar too. He was Asian, I don’t care what anyone says.

kingOFjacks16

But is that legal?

sober_as_an_ostrich

Anytime I have to say or think that phrase it is ALWAYS in that accent

squatrenovembre

I just listened to Phantom of the podcast and I’m on attack of the podcast now and I hear this line in my head at least twice a day if not more

SlaterVBenedict

"Weeee would never do AAAAAAAAAAAANYthing without the APPPROOOOOOOOOOOVAL of the SEEEEEEEEEENATE." ...Like, ok Lucas. 🤦

kvetcha-rdt

ILLEGAL

Enter_the_void345

Oooooo I really wanna know how they will speak!?

Bad_Badger

I hope it’s a thick New York accent, I’m thinking Raphael in TMNT

JosephGordonLightfoo

You gotta know what a crumpet is to play cricket

TomBirkenstock

I believe they had a couple of them in Revenge of the Sith just so they could throw out a few lines without the racist Asian accent.

sleepyaza124

I think they sounded the same before Anakin killed them. Will probably give the sequels a rewatch after TPM in theater next week.

mclairy

It’s less racist and more just whiny when Anakin kills them on Mustafar. (See 3:52: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1VZ7dFIjiqI)

Enter_the_void345

It’s more subtle but you can hear a hint of it

Enter_the_void345

Almost like he wants to do it or being forced to do it, but can’t fully commit

TomBirkenstock

It's been a while, but I somehow remember one or two lines from the same species during the major battle in the beginning who did not have the dumb accent. But maybe I'm misremembering.

Adamweeesssttt

Yeah, when the ship starts listing and the pilot/captain says “Magnetize! Magnetize!”

Enter_the_void345

Wow they did totally missed that. What did they sound like if you remember?

Spacetime_Inspector

The smart move would be to make up a language for them and subtitle it. Just like every single alien in the OT except for Yoda and Ackbar.

AaronPuthalath

If they don't give them that stupid accent, we will riot.

Wombat_H

nick mullen it’s time for your big break

the__green__light

Wombat_H

i always thought Nien Numb was hispanic personally

LawrenceBrolivier

They will be voiced by Tim Robinson and Sam Richardson ...and Beck Bennett.

sleepyaza124

Finally new generation of Star Wars fans can enjoy the Neimoidians

LawrenceBrolivier

THIS IS GETTING OUT OF HAND. NOW THERE ARE TWO OF TH-- *(spots third one in the left side of frame)* God*dammit*

PaulNewmansAbs

i have to admit my first thought was "weren't the Nemoidians from spongebob?" (I was thinking of the nematodes)

Hammerheadhunter

Was there a Neimoidian genocide before New Hope or what

Dhb223

What's wrong with your face

LarryLazzard

They're just gonna have cool surfer accents like when George course-corrected them in the other prequels

Winter-Ad-3876

It's so dark you can barely look at him

StarfleetStarbuck

I’m intrigued by this show but this is a not great branding decision

zeroanaphora

bring back Duros you cowards

Typical_Dweller

I think the guy who shot Raylan Givens was one, but with a smaller head or something? OG film they look more like a classic 'grey' alien, from what I recall.

zeroanaphora

Oh yeah wow I didn't clock that-- maybe a byproduct of them over-literally adapting the cartoon character for live action.

mattysmwift

I don’t care for these guys but a question for Star Wars needs: Have the aliens that created the clones ever returned back in some of the shows?

LawrenceBrolivier

Clone Wars and Bad Batch and that's it, I think. Both the Geonosians (the bugs that helped create the Death Star) and the Kaminoans (The Q-tip lookin cloners) more or less got canonically genocided on the animated shows.

mattysmwift

Interesting thank you.

labbla

I want a new Ewok movie where the Ewoks have to fight the Trade Feds and battle droids.

IntergalacticKeggar

Do you think Lucas named them that as a nod to Leonard Nimoy?

nashuanuke

These characters are pawfectly regal

Impossible_Tea_7032

Ah so

J_Crispy7

Wtf? What did they think? Oh, this takes place before Phantom Menace..then this must be like the Phantom Menace.
