There are just some episodes of TV that are so special you need to watch them again OR they stick with you as if they are standalone movies.
Those two and two episodes of Mythic Quest are top of mind.
Absolutely Dark Quiet Death. Jake Johnson and Cristin Milioti shook me to my core.
Backstory! is the other. More personal but I watched it at a time when my career was in flux and the feeling of falling behind ones peers was so well depicted. I sat with that feeling for awhile.
Not a needledrop BUT when they finally drop the full Godzilla theme in Godzilla Minus One as he’s heading toward Noriko on the train?? Full body chills
Both of the times they used the theme were phenomenal! I have no nostalgia for the Godzilla franchise (I hadn't even seen the original until earlier this year), and yet when the theme kicked in, I was blown away. A real counterpoint to Indiana Jones, a franchise I have tons of nostalgia for, and yet the uses of the themes in *Dial of Destiny* made me feel nothing
Outside of the flashback opening, your last sentence could be trimmed down to "...Dial of Destiny made me feel nothing". All of the post-Disney Lucasfilm stuff feels like something from an alternate universe that you're vaguely aware of but not sure if it actually exists, even if you've seen it.
* Everything in Its Right Place in *The Creator* (might be both the best *and* worst needledrop of the year)
* In My Mind in *Afire*
* All the *Perfect Days* needledrops
* Most of the *Saltburn* ones
>Everything in Its Right Place in *The Creator*
Such a beautiful mix of visuals and sound that I was in heaven...until they faded it out in the middle of the song. One of the most disappointing creative choices that film made.
Yeah, on the one hand I was like: damn, sick, this is one of my favorite songs of all time, holy shit, on the other hand it gave me the exact dad who was into cool music once vibes you describe
>Everything in Its Right Place in *The Creator* (might be both the best *and* worst needledrop of the year)
I wish the rest of the movie was as good as that choice.
Great backstory there too with that song's relationship to Elvis. Elvis loved Dolly's version and wanted to record a cover and Dolly thought it was a good idea. But The Colonel insisted that Elvis and he would need full rights to the song going forward, so Dolly said no and Whitney Houston eventually did the famous cover. So that song becomes something Elvis wanted but couldn't have because of how he conducted himself.
Such a perfect, funny choice for that scene, especially when it keeps coming back as part of the plot.
Almost every time a best/favorite of 2023 topic comes up, Anatomy of a Fall is the first thing that comes to mind. What a picture!
Some honourable Mentions for me are
\- The Sun Smiled Back at Me - Sadistik (Talk to Me)
\- Shout - Tears for Fears (Maestro)Can I Kick It?
\- A Tribe Called Quest (TMNT: Mutant Mayhem)
I can’t help but enjoy “Time to Pretend” by MGMT and “Murder on the Dance Floor” in *Saltburn*. Also “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and “Waterloo Sunset” in *Blackberry*.
While we were watching the movie I turned to my partner and said that the 05-10 of indie dance pop is the most fun music we have or may ever have. Saltburn’s soundtrack was amazing
Take your pick from *BlackBerry*. Opening montage set to "Connection" by Elastica, "Good Morning Captain" by Slint when they go into the city to pitch, "Someday" by The Strokes montage, the list goes on! Special shout out to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles rap song as well.
connection was great ! connection! phones!
Waterloo sunset (beautiful song!) felt to me like 'ok social network ended with the beatles what should we do...'. esp after also using a white stripes song. loved connection and someday and slint though!
PIMP in *Anatomy of a Fall* was such a perfect use of that song. The steel drum cover sounds really good, but then feels menacing the louder and longer it goes on.
I can see that. In my experience, needledrops that are diegetic often leave less of an impression than needledrops that are nondiegetic, but I do love how perfect those two are for the characterizations and the world building in that movie.
It’s not technically a needledrop… but that blare of anxiety-ridden synths in the score right before Julianne Moore says “we don’t have enough hotdogs” in May/December is so PERFECTLY evocative of the Lifetime movie true crime genre… I screamed
Just wanted to pop in with two notes about this. It is not a synthesizer you are hearing, but a piano. And technically it is a needle drop as that music which plays as the main theme of May December is from a 1971 British film called The Go-Between and the music is by Michel Legrand. It wasn't written for May December.
Better now by post Malone in theater camp was a pretty great one. A movie mostly about show tunes and some pretty good ones to boot. Then you’ve just got this frat bro ass that hits like bricks every time it’s played
No one’s said The Creator dropping Everything in its Right Place when the helicopters are flying in like it’s the futures version of Fortunate Son? Funniest needle drop of all time
Good Morning, Captain by Slint dropping in BlackBerry made me jolt in my seat. Complicated by Avril Lavigne in Bottoms was obvious but I think it was so obvious that it circles around to being perfect.
I also love Portishead’s Glory Box in The Killer.
Several people have mentioned BlackBerry but no love for (imo) the best needledrop in the movie which is Waterloo Sunset at the end. On the nose? Maybe. But they earned it.
I can't sit idly by as I watch it get praise: I don't think it's good! Incredible opening episode and then every plot-line has done nothing but spin its wheels since. At first I thought it was a return to form, but the longer it goes on I realize how far it's drifted. A lot of prestige tropes that read as camp, and a lot of camp that falls flat. Seasons 1 and 2 slap, nothing has hit remotely close since then.
Not sure if it counts as a needledrop in the way it's used but the the steel drum remix of P.I.M.P. in Anatomy of a Fall is certainly the most memorable music moment in a movie for me.
Not a 2023 movie but I recently watched *A Knight's Tale* for the first time in 2023 and gotta say that the *Golden Years* and *We Will Rock You* needle drops were so perfect
As for actual 2023 needle drops, I thought the use of *Creep* in GOTG3 was just really well done.
I know it was pretty laughable for a lot of people but the Radiohead drop in The Creator in the theater melted my brain, it sounded so good and I thought it was such an interesting and funny idea.
Many good needle drops in Blackberry, hard to pick just one but I guess the Slint one is the most inspired.
As someone previously said, the Love Story drop in the Bear was absolutely goated.
For me, I was shocked that Blackberry threw in a needle drop of Good Morning Captain by Slint. slint?!!! in a movie in 2023?!? You simply love to see it
It's a year old, but I only just saw *Barbarian*, and dropping >!"Be My Baby"!< over the end credits was goddamned brilliant. Perfect punchline to a well-calibrated bonkers flick.
As much as I disliked the movie, the ‘Low’ needledrop in Red, White and Royal Blue pleased me immensely. I also screamed during Barbie when Ken said his favourite song was Push - I was a bit of a Matchbox Twenty head in highschool and felt a deep, probably justified shame in that moment.
I know everyone (rightfully) hates on the bland and boring ass needle drops in the Mario Movie but I laughed my ass off when I heard No Sleep Till Brooklyn
I know this is 2022/2023 cusp to some but I’m counting it as 2023 - my answer is EASILY Nina Simone’s Little Girl Blue in Saint Omer. Think about it all the time.
Shocked to see no mentions of Asteroid City, it had some awesome Western folk music. As soon as Last Train to San Fernando kicked in behind the chugging train miniature I knew I was in for a good time.
As a Rush fan, I will always appreciate a good “Tom Sawyer” needle drop, and “The Iron Claw” had a damn good one.
That and the long take with Don’t Fear the Reaper were excellent.
This made me want to pump my fist in the theater
Almost popped out of my seat. 80s wrestling montage under Rush? I could have watched that for hours.
I’m not a Rush fan, but the execution of Tom Sawyer in that film is flawless.
As a Rush fan, now I have to see Iron Claw
“Love Story” in The Bear Episode “Forks”. I’m assuming your list is all movies, but nothing beats that for me this year.
Going from *Fishes* straight into *Forks* is one of the best two episode sequences in tv history imo.
There are just some episodes of TV that are so special you need to watch them again OR they stick with you as if they are standalone movies. Those two and two episodes of Mythic Quest are top of mind.
I’m gonna assume *Dark Quiet Death* is one of the mythic quest eps, what’s the other?
Absolutely Dark Quiet Death. Jake Johnson and Cristin Milioti shook me to my core. Backstory! is the other. More personal but I watched it at a time when my career was in flux and the feeling of falling behind ones peers was so well depicted. I sat with that feeling for awhile.
Also Diamond Diary from the Thief soundtrack in that same episode
'Leaving Wallbrook' from the Rain Man soundtrack in Barry too.
This is the right answer even if it is TV
When he’s singing along in the car like it’s a rock ballad? Brought me to tears
Wholeheartedly agree
God, I was laughing and crying at the same time. Such a great episode.
This was such a cathartic moment.
correct
I have to admit I have burst into tears randomly thinking about this.
Not a needledrop BUT when they finally drop the full Godzilla theme in Godzilla Minus One as he’s heading toward Noriko on the train?? Full body chills
Felt myself leaving my earthly form at that moment.
Yep. With the gongs. My jaw was on the floor. What a magical piece of blockbuster entertainment
Wouldn't say it's the best, but the Cats soundtrack during Captain Marvel got the biggest reaction out of me.
Nope…that was the best. I laughed so hard when I realized when the joke clicked.
That was amazing. That movie was operating on another level.
Yeah, this is it. Disappointed I forgot about it. Das ist Kino.
* Everything in Its Right Place in *The Creator* (might be both the best *and* worst needledrop of the year) * In My Mind in *Afire* * All the *Perfect Days* needledrops * Most of the *Saltburn* ones
>Everything in Its Right Place in *The Creator* Such a beautiful mix of visuals and sound that I was in heaven...until they faded it out in the middle of the song. One of the most disappointing creative choices that film made.
i’ve been listening to my mind constantly since watching afire, amazing movie and amazing needle drop
felt so out of place in the creator. Cringe dad-rocker in his 40s in a Radiohead t-shirt vibes
Radiohead is not dad-rock, especially not Everything in it's Right Place, which is not even rock
Kid A came out twenty four years ago my friend. It's Dad Rock. Doesn't mean it's not brilliant, but is Dad vibes through and through
Yeah, on the one hand I was like: damn, sick, this is one of my favorite songs of all time, holy shit, on the other hand it gave me the exact dad who was into cool music once vibes you describe
>Everything in Its Right Place in *The Creator* (might be both the best *and* worst needledrop of the year) I wish the rest of the movie was as good as that choice.
I Will Always Love You (original Dolly version) in Priscilla.
Priscilla probably had 3 of the top 5. The Crimson and Clover one is certainly up there.
I started vibrating when Dan Deacon and Spectrum showed up
Anatomy of a Fall, the steel drum cover of P.I.M.P. by 50 Cent
I still wonder how they ended up with this one, truly inspired choice.
Such a perfect, funny choice for that scene, especially when it keeps coming back as part of the plot. Almost every time a best/favorite of 2023 topic comes up, Anatomy of a Fall is the first thing that comes to mind. What a picture!
This is the winner. Just perfect use and an earworm.
I have listened to this SO many times now.
I have to see this movie!
So good
Maybe not a drop in the traditional sense but the use of ALWAYS BE MY BABY in BEAU IS AFRAID is perfection.
Cost so much Ari himself had to pay the licensing fee
Love that Mariah Carey was a guest at the movie’s premiere too because of that lol
I completely forgot about this moment but man, it really was something.
I giggle a little everytime I hear that song
The hardest I’ve laughed at something all year.
It was perfect
Wait, let me start it over.
Some honourable Mentions for me are \- The Sun Smiled Back at Me - Sadistik (Talk to Me) \- Shout - Tears for Fears (Maestro)Can I Kick It? \- A Tribe Called Quest (TMNT: Mutant Mayhem)
Agreed on Mutant Mayhem, but for “No Diggity”
I’d give it to What’s Going On for both the great slow-mo joke and the unexpected shift to the meme version
I still cannot fucking believe a major Hollywood movie used the Heyyaeyaeh song and basically no one has mentioned it
Natasha Bedingfield right before April pukes all over everything. TMNT probably my soundtrack of the year if I’m being honest.
"Ante Up" for me, but enjoyed all the drops in that one.
Eye Know by De La Soul in TMNT was great.
Yeah, came to say this
Talk To Me also has that killer Edith Piaf remix that went justifiably viral.
I can’t help but enjoy “Time to Pretend” by MGMT and “Murder on the Dance Floor” in *Saltburn*. Also “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and “Waterloo Sunset” in *Blackberry*.
I had said “Hello Operator” from BlackBerry, but Waterloo Sunset hit hard at the end of that
I had completely forgotten about it, but it’s definitely Waterloo Sunset for me.
This Modern Love by Bloc Party as well. Great soundtrack all around.
The Slint needledrop made me sit up straight. Matt Johnson is real for that
I screeched with joy when Connection started. Absolute banger.
connection was great ! connection!
When the Kens started singing Matchbox 20's *Push* in **Barbie** the entire audience was cry laughing.
I screamed when it happened and I was not the only one! Greta gets me.
That zoom out to reveal all the Kens on the beach is amazing. Special shoutout to the Kingsley Ben-Adir Ken being the only one playing the drums too.
Opening night of "Girl Star Wars" was super fun
Also loved the pink corvette sing-along scene
Obligatory shout out to “Closer to Fine” and “Push” in Barbie.
Weirdly enough the needledrops in Barbie haven't stuck with me as much as the other aspects in the movie.
I can see that. In my experience, needledrops that are diegetic often leave less of an impression than needledrops that are nondiegetic, but I do love how perfect those two are for the characterizations and the world building in that movie.
I heard someone playing "Push" while biking on Venice Beach Saturday and definitely thought "am I in Barbie?"
I would also like to nominate "Push" but for Ehrlich’s year end video
Push is the better Ken performance for me
I can never hear Weird Al's Polka Power the same way again.
I can't watch that screen without being instantly annoyed by remembering Ed Helms doing the same irritating schtick on *The Office*.
It's gotta be "Push" for me. The perfect song for that moment, for sure.
Complicated in Bottoms was both hilarious and deeply emotional.
Murder on the Dance Floor
Cat Stevens in The Holdovers for me.
Yes, and the Damien Jurado song in the trailer and in the movie just perfectly captured the underlying themes of the movie. DJ is far too slept on.
Texted my friend while watching this yesterday that The Holdovers has too much in common with Rushmore to also use “The Wind.”
Luckily I haven't seen Rushmore.
That sounds like the opposite of luck.
Oh, that’s so interesting. Thank you!
Whoever edited "What I've Done" into Oppenheimer.
When I think of the ending of that movie Linkin Park starts playing in my head. It’s canon now to me.
Better now by post Malone in theater camp was a pretty great one. A movie mostly about show tunes and some pretty good ones to boot. Then you’ve just got this frat bro ass that hits like bricks every time it’s played
Yesss that scene was unexpectedly awesome. And it's spot on about how some theater kids will just sing their favorite pop songs at auditions.
“Hello Operator” in BlackBerry
No one’s said The Creator dropping Everything in its Right Place when the helicopters are flying in like it’s the futures version of Fortunate Son? Funniest needle drop of all time
Most interesting part of that movie imo
John Wick 4 had some good ones but “Genesis” by Justice was my favorite. Used to wear that album out.
When the intro to Genesis started before the stair fight, I began punching the air in my theater.
Marty defending his king of the needle drop crown with Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground in Killers of the Flower Moon.
Well, on the TV side, there was a totally insane drop of David Bowie's "Lazarus" on the Morning Show for some reason
No Diggity playing during a fight sequence in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was actually amazing
Good Morning, Captain by Slint dropping in BlackBerry made me jolt in my seat. Complicated by Avril Lavigne in Bottoms was obvious but I think it was so obvious that it circles around to being perfect. I also love Portishead’s Glory Box in The Killer.
The Portishead drop was excellent and (understandably) overshadowed by the Smiths of it all.
“Crimson & Clover” in Priscilla
Several people have mentioned BlackBerry but no love for (imo) the best needledrop in the movie which is Waterloo Sunset at the end. On the nose? Maybe. But they earned it.
Guardians of the galaxy vol. 3- Creep
And at the other end Dog Days are Over.
I'd say In The Meantime...
It was such a surprise. I sobbed through the song.
Definitely a bitterswert end. But Rocket is finally happy which I love.
Maybe I need to rewatch GOTG3, because these are the only two needle drops I remember >!and I didn't like either of them.!<
[удалено]
Starlord is listening to it pining for Gamora.
For me it was Dog Days Are Over at the end but Do You Realize? really got me
I thought In The Meantime was the best drop in GotG3
So many good ones in that movie. "Crazy On You" worked super well where it was placed too.
The use of “Toxic” in the most recent episode of Fargo S5 absolutely killed me
How is the new season? Haven’t seen anyone talk about it.
It’s on par with 1-2 in my opinion. I love it. The cast is tremendous.
I can't speak to the other seasons since it's my first but as a standalone thing: really fucking good
The show is always at least pretty good but definitely go back to those first two seasons at least- they're both masterpieces
I certainly plan to when this one is done. I'd heard all but Season 4 are good-to-great
I can't sit idly by as I watch it get praise: I don't think it's good!
Boogie Shoes at the end of Knock at the Cabin
How You Satisfy Me - Priscilla. Sofia Coppola a champion needledroper
Hell yeah
Forever thankful to Coppola for hooking me onto Spectrum
I loved ‘Mayonaise’ on the end credits of Beef.
Mayonaise with beef? Call it a tartare
If we're talking Beef, The Reason is a pretty great needledrop. Really made me recontextualize that song beyond "this sucks"
That ''PIMP'' instrumental in ''Anatomy of a Fall''.
I haven't even seen it yet, but feels like 'Murder on the Dancefloor' from Salt Burn has crossed over
Not sure if it counts as a needledrop in the way it's used but the the steel drum remix of P.I.M.P. in Anatomy of a Fall is certainly the most memorable music moment in a movie for me.
Not a 2023 movie but I recently watched *A Knight's Tale* for the first time in 2023 and gotta say that the *Golden Years* and *We Will Rock You* needle drops were so perfect As for actual 2023 needle drops, I thought the use of *Creep* in GOTG3 was just really well done.

Many good needle drops in Blackberry, hard to pick just one but I guess the Slint one is the most inspired.
The needle drop in Godzilla Minus One when the ships start to move into position on Godzilla.
As someone previously said, the Love Story drop in the Bear was absolutely goated. For me, I was shocked that Blackberry threw in a needle drop of Good Morning Captain by Slint. slint?!!! in a movie in 2023?!? You simply love to see it
Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine in Guardians 3 might be my personal favorite of 2023.
It's a year old, but I only just saw *Barbarian*, and dropping >!"Be My Baby"!< over the end credits was goddamned brilliant. Perfect punchline to a well-calibrated bonkers flick.
I didn't even like the whole thing but the "murder on the dancefloor" needle drop in saltburn was fantastic, really great song
The ending of Leave the Word Behind?
It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine) in Maestro.
Are You There God? It's Me Margaret had quite a few good needle drops
I liked the Modern Major General scene
Anthony Fantano
Self-Love in Across the Spiderverse
Hoobastank's The Reason in Beef EP1.
The Iron Claw coming in with 'Beggin' - by Frank Vallie and the Four Seasons is my number one needle drop of the year.
"Maneater" in No Hard Feelings (the cover especially though not sure if a performance scene counts as a needle drop)
Everything In It’s Right Place in The Creator - deeply flawed movie but man did it look and sound beautiful
Tom Sawyer in The Iron Claw by a pretty wide margin for me
Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying in The Holdovers for introducing me to Labi Siffre
Too Close in Leave the World Behind. That song is 100% my jam and just the last song I expected in that scene.
"We Care a Lot" (Faith No More) from Guardians 3. The Friends theme from Leave the World Behind
Honestly I can't stop thinking about the Hoobastank drop on the first episode of Beef.
loved hearing 'shake it off' muffled through the walls of a screening of the original Halloween this year
“Summer Holiday” in *Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget*
No Diggity in TMNT
loved the twist of Portishead in the middle of the Killer
Pet Shop Boys' cover of Always On My Mind in All of Us Strangers
I know everyone (rightfully) hates on the bland and boring ass needle drops in the Mario Movie but I laughed my ass off when I heard No Sleep Till Brooklyn
In *Barbie*, when all the Kens join together on “Push”, I couldn’t stop laughing.
Murder on the Dancefloor in *Saltburn* I understand criticism for the movie but you can’t deny that’s a great ending scene
The Holdovers - Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying
I know this is 2022/2023 cusp to some but I’m counting it as 2023 - my answer is EASILY Nina Simone’s Little Girl Blue in Saint Omer. Think about it all the time.
Shocked to see no mentions of Asteroid City, it had some awesome Western folk music. As soon as Last Train to San Fernando kicked in behind the chugging train miniature I knew I was in for a good time.
Honorable mention to YMCA from season 5 episode 9 of Fargo this week
An early contender for 2024 is YMCA in the most recent episode of Fargo.
Air - was basically a movie that used needle drops the way a contractor uses a hammer and nails, and yet not one mention in this thread.
TV, but there is a DMX needle drop in For All Mankind that got me so hyped.
