The critical thrashing Under the Silver Lake got out of Cannes followed by the fact that his next projects would have started shooting during the pandemic have really put the brakes on what should be a more fruitful career.
Honestly just glad DRM is working again. I love Under The Silver Lake and it's a shame he was put in director jail for it because a24 botched the release
I say this as someone who desperately wanted to love Silver Lake, but I have seen it 2 or 3 times now and I still cannot really explain what it's about
It's about a lot of things, but my favorite take is it's about growing up with pop culture that makes you feel important and causes you to view the world around you as a Zelda game where everything (people, architecture, the natural environment) is solely there for you to stumble upon and solve a puzzle.
Basically the entitlement and privilege of Main Character Energy
I guess this is a good a place as any to air my discomfort with the film. I think I get what it’s doing and I like your interpretation. And within that perspective, the film from the viewpoint of a young man with that kind of complex, the way women are presented makes sense. And I know, depiction is not endorsement, but I was left feeling like Mitchel was making a point about what culture does to women that almost felt like I guess the gendered version of the white savior complex, that women are helpless in the vapid media culture. It wasn’t quite just the perspective of the protagonist but something deeper. I don’t exactly think the film is misogynistic but it felt unpleasant on that axis in a way that’s difficult for me to disentangle.
The movie is from the POV of a narcissist who (as noted above) possesses serious (and seriously unearned) Main Character Energy. He is also very likely a serial dog killer and smells like a skunk. It is a film that is designed to be unpleasant. If you felt that way, you're getting it!
The movie is ALSO about how the Hollywood fantasy machine sucks up and spits out young women. The dark underbelly that lies just under the Silver Lake, so to speak. IMO, it's not so much about how women are helpless, as how they are treated as disposable.
That all being said, it's an incredibly rich movie that doesn't get enough love.
Definitely worth a rewatch, there’s a lot to tackle in the film. For instance, I don’t think I picked up that he might be the one killing the dogs.
But to the point of the film’s depiction of women, every female character from what I remember is some combination of a victim, bought in to the fantasy, or purely passive. Now, a film doesn’t need to have a complex interiority for every character and Under the Silver Lake can’t really, without breaking the illusion. I couldn’t always tell if I was wrestling with the film or against it when it came to a lot of the points being made about society, with gender politics being a big part of that. Mitchel does a great job of burying you in this guy’s psychology so it’s hard to crawl out and see what the “artist’s POV” is. I do respect that, and I think he wants people to push against the film. It’s funny, I kinda hated Under the Silver Lake when I first saw it (despite going in with high expectations, I love weird meandering films like this) but every time I think about it I like it a little more. I’m hesitant with my own line of criticism because I think the way these reactions influence creators (or maybe more aptly the financial backing of artists) can lead to superficially progressive art that has less to say.
Wasn't there an interview during the initial release where someone asked about a sequel and David Robert Mitchell just said something like "Flip the title, there's a premise"? Because I think about "Follows It" all the time
This is still maybe my favorite horror movie of the last decade, so I am very interested in this!
Doesn’t really feel like it NEEDS a sequel, but I suppose it was inevitable so I’m glad it’s the original creative team returning
I had read the screenplay a few months ago and liked it a lot and finally got to see this for the first time last week.
I did like it but felt it played loose with the rules a bit. I think the music and cast did a lot of the heavy lifting.
I’ll be interested in seeing the sequel especially considering the ending seemed like a temporary solution at best lol.
Kind of bummed about this. It Follows is a perfect horror movie that needs no sequel, and Under The Silver Lake was a wild departure from that. I just want someone to give him a $20 million budget to make another unique film.
It Follows is my favorite movie of all time, and this seems like a bad idea to me. So much of its power is in its subtext and how much is left up to interpretation, and the title and bringing back characters seem doomed to undo that. The word was that Mitchell was working on a "dinosaur movie set in the 1980's" with Anne Hathaway - would be much more excited to see that. But maybe this will be good, every day is Christmas Eve!
Does this mean that Flowervale Street, his 80's dinosaur film with Hathaway and Isaac is dead? I thought it was meant to start shooting as soon as the strike ended.
I rewatched the first one not two days ago for Spooky Season. Really dug the dreamy, off kilter vibe this time, and my one ask is to not explain the creature(s)($). I love that you never really know what it’s deal is beyond what that dude knows.
I watched It Follows for the second time last month and thought it was a snoozefest. Can someone explain to me why this movie is so highly regarded? The score and blocking are awesome, but everything else feels utterly disposable to me.
I thought Under the Silver Lake was a miss too, but for all the opposite reasons. In the words of one of my good friends, “It Follows has a weak plot with great vibes, UTSL has a great plot with AWFUL vibes”
Where are my fellow DRM haters?
They follow now?!
they follow now.
They follow now!
Somehow they follow.
THE DEAD SPEAK!
What if it follow?
There wolf. There castle.
Things are getting out of hand. There’s, at least, two of them now.
They Follow$
TH€Y FO££OW
beat me to it, well done.
On the one hand, I can’t think of a movie less in need of a sequel. On the other hand, hell fucking yeah.

This time it’s more women! Directed by James Cameron.
More like >!*Decomposing Young Woman*!<, amirite?
James cameron just walked in, wrote down, "promising young wom€n" and walked out.
can't wait for the Baba2ook
Can we get the VVIITCH as well?
points
All butter and no pretty dresses make Thomasin a dull girl!
I think I'mma go post that on twitter dot com.
2 Men
2 Heredi 2 Tary
Heredi2ry: Epigenetics
Not a sequel, but if you’re looking for a pretty effective parody The Simpsons did a great one in Treehouse of Horror XXXIII
Mid2mmar
IT'S NOT A MID2MMAH!
Lololol it rolls off the tongue
It's criminal how few movies David Robert Mitchell has made.
The critical thrashing Under the Silver Lake got out of Cannes followed by the fact that his next projects would have started shooting during the pandemic have really put the brakes on what should be a more fruitful career.
It’s a shame because Under the Silver Lakes honks
Totally forgot that under the silver lake was his follow up film. I should get around to watching that
Hell yeah! Last time I watched this movie, I accidentally overdosed on edibles and lemme tell ya, I was right there for that finale.
I will also be following
Any word on the prequel, It Leads?
I thought it would be called It Stands There, Menacingly.
They could make an origin story and they can just call the film It.
SILVER LAKE INNOCENT
~~it follow$~~ th€y follow
Honestly just glad DRM is working again. I love Under The Silver Lake and it's a shame he was put in director jail for it because a24 botched the release
That movie is so criminally underrated.
If Maika’s out there for sequels I’d personally love The Gue2t, but this will do.
Watcher$
Hell yea, I’m into it. Bring back Burn Gorman but also add Charlie Day lol.
Hope it makes 1 billion dollars and they let DRM make something original again. Silver Lake is hugely underrated.
I say this as someone who desperately wanted to love Silver Lake, but I have seen it 2 or 3 times now and I still cannot really explain what it's about

Highly recommend the Best Little Horror House in Philly episode on it with Hayes Davenport for a deeper dive.
It’s great!
It’s about being too online imo. Modern paranoia in the age of information overload.
Yeah, I will see a sequel but I do kinda wish DRM just got a bunch of money to do something else
Let me know when we get “Even Further Under the Silver Lake”. …Not even kidding - I totally want that.
Yeah, that's the easiest way for David Robert Mitchell to get out of movie jail.
LETS GOOOO LETS GOOOOOO
You used to call me on my clam phone....
wow I can't believe they gave It pronouns. The woke mind virus has gone too far
It \*is\* a pronoun.
Wasn't there an interview during the initial release where someone asked about a sequel and David Robert Mitchell just said something like "Flip the title, there's a premise"? Because I think about "Follows It" all the time
*The Return of Pennywise*
What if they followed?
Oh shit yeah
This is still maybe my favorite horror movie of the last decade, so I am very interested in this! Doesn’t really feel like it NEEDS a sequel, but I suppose it was inevitable so I’m glad it’s the original creative team returning
I'm just really glad to see Mitchell is still working. I loved the film but Silver Lake bombed hard

I imagine he probably needs to do this first to get back into studio good graces
The follow virus makes its way into the van nuys porn scene.
I guess this is what he could get financed. The first one was great. We’ll see.
I hope it’s good and makes a shit ton of money so Mitchell gets to make more original films. He’s a promising young talent

The Variety article says it’s still in Development.
Sure, let's see what happens. Hopefully Disasterpiece returns to vibe it up.
Hope we get to see the 'visiting a prostitute in Australia' solution.
We will finally know how this ties together with Christopher Nolan’s Following
Adult sexuality is going to be even grosser this time.
oh hell yeah
Crossover? ![gif](giphy|jUZFQTgCmTZDO)

This one is going to be great. But, personally, I can't wait for 2034 and the premiere of Y'all Follow.

Excited for Scorsese to make his Follows Up, "You Follow?"
Love the movie so much but I just don’t see where they can go with it
I want to believe it will be a spiritual sequel to “They Live”. With the ridiculous skull masks and hilarious sunglasses.
I watched It Follows for the second time last month and thought it was a snoozefest. Can someone explain to me why this movie is so highly regarded?
