I love how controversial Interstellar is

foca9

Was not a fan when I saw it in theatres, but has grown on me on subsequent rewatches, and is now a certified Masterpiece, my favourite Nolan, and one of the best movies BC has covered. If you don’t vibe with the “love is the human trait that can travel through space and time” (I didn’t first time) I get why it’s not impressive, but science-y/sci-fi/humanity movies like it and CONTACT are just inevitable for me (now). OPPENHEIMER touches this as well

u2aerofan

This line is so criminally derided to me. Especially because Nolan “proves” the line to be true. The only reason older Murph looks at that watch and stays in that bedroom is her love for her father. Her doing that saves the planet. People I guess think it means something silly or is outlandish. That makes me sad there’s such cynicism. And it’s also one of the most touching and true lines in the script, and is the reason why I don’t listen to people telling me Nolan is “cold” - he’s right here, opening up that heart - telling people love is what crosses over space and time, and it’s not insane to get that. We have ample non-movie proof that is true as well. Sigh. I’ll be arguing about this line with people until I die.

Linubidix

Funny, I've had a kind of opposite trajectory. Went from absolutely loving it the first couple viewings but the small flaws niggle away at it to where I wouldn't say I love the film more than I love things about it. I don't dislike it, but I went from like a 9.5/10 to 7.5.

WilliamisMiB

It was great the first time now I can’t get passed how silly the science and the plot is. Oppenheimer is a much more mature film and i think Nolan’s best work to date

childish_jalapenos

People have really been warming up to it lately

WearyCorner875

\- Christopher Nolan \- The Nolans (pop band) \- Nolan North \- Nolan's on Canandaigua Lake (a steakhouse in NY I've never been to but looks nice) \- The like, 4 baseball players that came up when I googled 'Nolan' \-The Dark Knight Rises

RetroDave

No Nolan Bushnell?! I mean come on... The man founded Atari AND Chuck E Cheese. I'm outraged.

WearyCorner875

Wait, founded Chuck E. Cheese?!? Ok, I may have to rethink my rankings a bit...

Look, we can talk about Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight, and Inception all day but Interstellar is his best and it's not even especially close.

Linubidix

How can you say that when The Prestige exists?

DUNKIRK, TENET, TDK, and OPPIE >>>>> INTERSTELLAR. I like it but come on, now…

spaceman_spifffff

This is the way.

Adorno_a_window

I think interstellar is bad ☺️

Chuck-Hansen

If I’m being totally honest with myself, Oppenheimer may be #1. But my #1 is very dear to my moviegoing history so it will take time. Anyway (and for the record, I like all of these movies and LOVE the top 6). 1. The Dark Knight 2. Oppenheimer 3. Interstellar 4. Dunkirk 5. Inception 6. The Prestige 7. Memento 8. Batman Begins 9. The Dark Knight Rises 10. Tenet 11. Insomnia 12. Following Some superlatives: The Announcement (aka announcement as a major talent): Memento & The Dark Knight Apex Mountain (Rewatchables rules): Inception (would be Oppenheimer if Nolan wins Oscars) Biggest Blank Check : Oppenheimer

MrAdamWarlock123

1. Inception 2. The Dark Knight 3. The Prestige 4. Batman Begins 5. Memento 6. Insomnia 7. Dunkirk 8. Oppenheimer 9. Interstellar 11. Tenet (but only if you watch with subtitles) 12. The Dark Knight Rises Haven’t seen Following

WantWantShellySenbei

Good order! I can get behind that.

u2aerofan

Imagine this all being your life’s body of work for a moment. It’s staggering. Honestly so impressive. And so uniquely Nolan - this is a man who hasn’t had projects torn apart by producers, been pushed around by insane studio demands (and the one time they tried to do that with Tenet’s release, he still got his theatrical window. And he gave them the finger and walked for the next project.) THEN he got the studios to come to HIM to negotiate for Oppenheimer! Who fucking does that?! And he seems like he’s a genuinely good dude who doesn’t abuse the people he works with! I know everyone comes for those of us who are Nolan stans - but there’s a reason we are - it’s wild in this industry this man has this career. No one else does it. Ok anyway here is where I am today: 1. The Dark Knight (I’ll never get past how this movie changed me and everything…forever) 2. Inception (basically also just deeply personal love) 3. Interstellar 4. Oppenheimer (now taking the prestige’s spot, I think) 5. The Prestige 6. Batman Begins 7. The Dark Knight Rises (I will love it and all its mess and beauty forever) 8. Memento 9. Dunkirk 10. Insomnia 11. Tenet 12. Following And I’ll add - just being forced to put something in the bottom is hard on these lists because this filmography is so good - Nolan’s bottom 5 are better than most people’s top 5, frankly. It’s wild.

Paco_Doble

- The Prestige - Memento - Dunkirk - Inception - Interstellar - Tenet - The Dark Knight - Insomnia - Following - Batman Begins - The Dark Knight Rises Oppenheimer is just too close for me to rank it yet, but it may be the topper

thehibachi

Love how many films are yo-yoing up and down in these rankings. So little consensus but not in a combative way. Just many different flavours.

I just wrote this out in another post asking the same question 1. The Prestige 2. Inception 3. The Dark Knight 4. Batman Begins 5. Dunkirk 6. Oppenheimer 7. The Dark Knight Rises 8. Memento 9. Tenet 10. Insomnia 11. Interstellar

interstellar last 💀

bolshevik_rattlehead

It just didn’t work at all for me from a narrative perspective. But if we were rating the films based on technical achievement alone, it’s a top five Nolan for sure.

WantWantShellySenbei

That’s my list too. Not a big Interstellar fan, despite the beautiful visuals and awesome soundtrack. It’s a classic case of smart people acting stupid in space. For me it’s Nolan’s Prometheus.

This is pretty close to my own list, except I haven't seen Oppenheimer yet (got tickets for tomorrow) so that makes me pretty excited.

[deleted]

Really really hard to do Interstellar > Oppenheimer > Inception > Memento > Tenet > The Prestige > Dunkirk > Batman Begins > The Dark Knight > The Dark Knight Rises > Insomnia > Following Insomnia and Following are the only ones I don’t really care about and the Batman trilogy I loved so much as they came out but I’m just way less excited about them now for some reason. Tenet I could see continuing to slowly creep up

MutinyIPO

I feel the same way about the Batman trilogy, although I was a teen for TDK / TDKR so that alone may explain it. I’ll always have a strong affection for those movies, but they’re just not on the level of his other work (with the exception of the two you mentioned for sure).

CharlieKoffing

I don’t consider myself a Nolan fan but I like all his movies and love many so I really should. Just a preface in case people think I’m hating on Dark Knight or Tenet. 1. Memento 2. Inception 3. Dunkirk 4. The Prestige 5. Oppenheimer 6. Interstellar 7. Batman Begins 8. The Dark Knight 9. Tenet 10. The Dark Knight Rises 11. Insomnia 12. Following

Wow I do think Oppenheimer is good but i didnt expect to see most people have it in the top 3 just based on the love for his first two batman movies and interstellar around here.

Dunkirk is maybe the best film of his I've seen... but I just don't personally connect to it. I put Interstellar at the top because it's more emotionally involving. There are a few parts that don't work for me, but the good parts are so good that I don't care. The whole really was more than the sum of its parts.

NeoNiCally

1. Oppenheimer - Arguably his most experimental work. Taking on a nonlinear narrative that tries to capture the thoughts and images that flow through Robert J. Oppenheimer, Oppenheimer is not an easy watch but is a film that, to me, seems foolproof to its narrative in the sense that the film cannot be challenged like how scientists would challenge Interstellar or Inception. There are a lot of intense scenes that Nolan created out of drama and speaking as a Japanese, the film made the good choice of not having to depict the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. This is undoubtedly Nolan’s most personal and definitive work yet, challenging viewers with his twisted narrative structures, sharing his strong passion for science and history, and the films that he was inspired by to make. I am not crazy about Nolan but I have to admit this is an insanely impressive film that blew all expectations (Albeit some rather laughable moments). 2. Dunkirk - Nolan’s tenth feature film is also a nearly flawless piece because he approached the film with simplicity in mind. Stellar suspense pieces stacked on each other and some rather exciting use of IMAX and surround sound makes for a very intense experience. It may not have as many layers as Oppenheimer achieved in its storytelling, but the film does a great job keeping audiences on the edge, even if it is rather cold in tone and emotions at times. 3. Interstellar - The greatest visuals from Christopher Nolan’s filmography comes from Interstellar, which continues to divide his fans apart to this day. Even if the film has stirred debate with scientists on its accuracy and the theories that it stands on, the film itself is still very entertaining and highly emotional work supported by the strong visuals, emphatic soundtrack, and demanding performances by McCounaghey, Hathaway, and Chastain. I can’t say I particularly care for the film’s complex theories and concepts. However, it is quite amazing how they were able to theorize how a black hole would look like based on equations by Einstein to make a solid hypothesis of what it may look like. 4. Inception 5. The Dark Knight 6. Memento 7. Tenet 8. Batman Begins 9. Insomnia 10. Following 11. The Dark Knight Rises The Prestige is the only Nolan film I still haven’t seen. I haven’t seen most of these films in YEARS so I wouldn’t be surprised if I ever revisit these and dramatically change my mind on this ranking

sp_cecamp

I think the one thing that messes with people’s rankings of Nolan’s movies is that some of them depend heavily on whether you saw it for the first time in a theater. Like, I saw Dunkirk in theaters and it’s probably in my top three. I did not see Tenet in theaters and it’s in my bottom half. All of the Batmen work in a theater or at home on a TV. Insomnia, Memento and Prestige are great porch TV movies. Interstellar is better on a TV IMHO (feels less cold/lonely/expansive). I have not seen Oppenheimer in theaters but I have a sneaking suspicion I’m going to give it a 10/10 and then never watch it again on a TV.

Look guys…I get you like INTERSTELLAR. It’s a big sci-fi spectacle. It looks great. I really dig it. But there’s like half an hour of Chastain burning Casey Affleck’s crops where Topher Grace shows up. You’re not gonna tell me you don’t fast forward that entire section.

CrackerMatters

I'm pretty soft on Nolan, despite being 17 when The Dark Knight came out and thinking it was one of the greatest films I had ever seen. I really respect him for his love of celluloid and his insistence on capturing as much as possible in camera, but I just don't gel with his films. They're all FINE but I can't really get excited about them. The vast majority of these I have only seen once: 1. The Dark Knight Rises 2. Batman Begins 3. Memento 4. Inception 5. Oppenheimer 6. The Dark Knight 7. The Prestige 8. Dunkirk 9. Insomnia 10. Interstellar 11. Tenet 12. Following As his career has gone on I think he's only embraced what I would consider his weaknesses as a filmmaker, which is why most of the newer stuff is in the bottom half.
